A marker of great art is often its ability to capture and transport a person to a specific place and time. Fragrance is especially powerful in its ability to touch memory, as the operational pathways of memory and olfaction are quite close in the brain. Darren Alan Perfumes Jonquille had an extraordinary effect on me. At first spray, this elegant fragrance brought back a lost childhood memory with an immediacy and tenderness that is rare to experience. After confirmation from my mother, I began to wear Darren Alan Perfumes Jonquille to excavate that precious childhood experience and treasure the pure joy and innocence it returned to me.

The spring air is light and delicately warm with a chill still left in the shadows of the morning. My mother and I are outside our home working the flower beds. The jonquils are the only blooms to come up so far, matching the happy yellow dandelions in the lawn. The soil in the flower beds is rich, silty and loamy with some sandstone residue from the Ouachita mountains. Healthy soil that is full with life has a special scent to it, like geosmin, kind of sweet and a touch of active and hardy decomposition. I must have been around 9 years old on that lazy spring weekend. Darren Alan Perfumes Jonquille brought back the precious memory of the day with my mom. I remember making a necklace from the jonquils, daffodils and dandelions, interweaving their bright green stems by loosening green waters from the stems in tiny slits to fit the next one into the intricate plait. Jonquils and dandelions mixed together in a glorious veil of complex and honeyed floralcy along the lines of hyacinth and jasmine with touches of spice and musk. If you are looking to experience such a joyful and purely contented spring day, laying on the new grass with a yellow floral garland, then Jonquille should be next on your list.

Darren Alan is an American artisanal perfumer who has made a 7-year deep study of perfumery’s classical genres, including materials often used in classical perfumery. Darren brings these materials into his fragrances with an eye to vitality and modernity. Darren describes his Nouveau Vintage style as a kind of search: “if I were living and creating fragrances back in the Golden Age of Perfumery, what would my fragrances have smelled like back then?” Indeed, his fragrances express the discipline and materials of classic genres in an exuberant and vital form today. When I want to know what my cherished bottles of vintage perfume might have smelled like in their prime, I often look to Darren Alan’s creations for an idea of that elite craftsmanship and disciplined production. Darren also leverages contemporary knowledge and know-how, “it’s not just a matter of recreating fragrances in a vintage style, but also bringing my modern experience to the formula as well. This process gives my fragrances a vintage throwback while still feeling relevant to the modern nose.

Yellow Jonquil #3 Georgia O’Keefe wiki

Darren Alan Perfumes Jonquille opens with a bright flash of Bergamot shining on the green freshness of Galbanum. The effect of sunny Bergamot on sharp Galbanum produces a lovely effervescent and sparkly opening with a meadow-fresh wildflower floralcy. The heart of Darren Alan’s Jonquille Parfum is a masterful symphony of everything golden and yellow to be found in a spring-time bouquet. The sweet nectar-like aura of Mimosa blends beautifully with Jonquil’s darkly spicy golden scent, its aldehydic sheen merging into femme muskiness. There is a green leafy edge to Jonquil that reaches out and bridges beautifully with rich, green and heady Narcissus.

Into the dry down, Jonquille shows the velvety floral aspects of Jonquil, as well as its powdery texture. Darkly honeyed and still beautifully musky, Angelica Root adds an earthy quality that brings to mind the awakening of life in spring soil. Warm Ambrette Seed softens and warms with a nutty and fatty texture, delicately animalic and hay-like, feeling as if the sun was reanimating the dry earth after winter. Darren Alan Perfumes Jonquille leaves my skin enveloped in a soft, enchanting Musk with stray flashes of yellow petals and green stems floating in a gentle breeze.

Notes: Bergamot, Galbanum, Jonquil, Narcissus, Mimosa, Angelica Root, Ambrette Seed, Vintage Musk Accord

This sounds classically floral from what I’m reading. I dont have much experience with most of the notes so I’m not sure what to make of it. A delight for sure but I’d love to test so I know which ingredients stand out. Please gift me with the bottle, fro. Jacksonville NC.

For the past couple of years, I’ve come across Darren Alan’s name many times, mostly when certain fragrance reviewers are speaking highly of his fragrance creations, and I’m very interested in trying some of them. I’d love to try Jonquille. It sounds like it’s not similar to anything else in my collection, and I’m always interested in discovering high-quality, original fragrances. Also, I’d like to add more florals to my collection. I become further interested to try Jonquille when Rachel mentions things like: Darren’s history as a perfumer, and “I often look to Darren Alan’s creations for an idea of that elite craftsmanship and disciplined production”, and also when she describes the fragrance by saying, e.g. “Jonquille shows the velvety floral aspects of Jonquil, as well as its powdery texture.” Please consider me for the giveaway draw: I’d love to win it. I live in the U.S.A.

  • I bought a 10 ml of this last spring when that was the only size it was available in, and all I can say is it is stunning! It immediately took me back to playing in the front garden of my childhood home, frolicking amongst the daffodils in the spring sunshine. It’s one of the most lovely yellow florals I’ve experienced. As Rachel mentioned, it has this rich, honeyed, and slightly spicy kick in between the barrage of florals and soft greens. I love all of Darren’s work and am so thrilled to see him release a true floral – but one that is done in his signature style and not your everyday, overly sweet and “juvenile” style. No, this is playful but its for grown-ups. Love it. Would be honored to have a full bottle. I live in NC, USA.

  • What stood out for me is the comparison of scent to art and the connection that has to the artistry of perfume making. He notes that scent and memory are one and as an artisanal perfumer he wants to tap into classical genres and materials of classical perfumery with a touch of the modern; the scent tying into the essence of spring itself within its notes; Ambrette Seed, galbanum, mimosa and the earthiness of ambrette and angelica root. USA

  • What a lovely memory to relive! I too have memories of childhood springs, spent among the yellow flowers of my parent’s garden. (And the Rhodedendron’s too). Jonquil sounds like a wonderful memory but also an experience to treasure in modern Now Times as well.

OMG! I love daffodils and jonquils and hyacinths in spring. I can’t wait to try this. Thank you for the drawing. I loved the review. NY state

  • Thank you, Rachel, for sharing that sweet childhood memory with us. What a magical moment it must have been, when Jonquille took you back to that early spring day!

I have always loved the smell of dandelions and jonquils, including their watery stems when broken. If Darren Alan’s Jonquille can evoke those scents, I definitely want to smell it.
Many thanks for this review and giveaway!

  • Every day we learn new things – I didn’t know Jonquil flowers till after reading this review 🙂 Thank you Rachel and I agree fragrances are one of the most powerful wayback machines after sharply experiencing a vivid memory from over 2 decades ago aroused by a single sniff of Hermes d’Orange Vert Concentre. Jonquille Parfum sounds stunning. I’m in TX USA

  • I adore vintage inspired fragrances and Jonquille Parfum sounds like a lovely ode to spring and memories of past seasons. Jonquil, narcissus and mimosa are spring flowers full of softly honeyed golden sunshine. The vibe is definitely yellow which seems to be reflected in the color of the juice. I enjoy angelica and ambrette seed and am always happy to see them used in a floral composition. I am intrigued by the vintage musk accord. I’m in MD, USA.

  • How wonderful that this perfume was able to revive a long forgotten memory for Rachel! Spring is my favorite season and my birthday is in May. I’m already longing for the sunshine and joyful blooms to come. Tbis sounds like just what I need to get me through the long dark winter. In Brooklyn, NY

  • What struck me about Jonquille is how the notes used conjure up images of a warm and inviting spring day. Thank you for the opportunity. New York, USA.

THank you for the wonderful review Rachel.

I love the jonquil and narcissus family and have planted many of them late fall and I await their bloom in the spring.

I love how this fragrance encapsulates the essence of a cherished spring memory, vividly unfolding its narrative through scent. The initial burst of Bergamot and Galbanum creates a sparkling, meadow-fresh floral opening, while Mimosa and Jonquil infuse the heart with a golden nectar-like sweetness, intertwining seamlessly with Narcissus’ green tones. As the fragrance progresses, velvety floral facets emerge, enriched by Angelica Root’s earthy essence and the warmth of Ambrette Seed, mirroring the rejuvenation of soil after winter. The dry down gracefully envelopes the skin in a soft Musk, a serene echo of yellow petals and green stems carried on a gentle breeze.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • What a beautiful and personal review—that description of a day gardening flowers and weaving jonquils and dandelions is so evocative and detailed—really takes you there. Darren Alan’s pentiant for vintage styles seems well suited to a perfume like Jonquille, with it’s aldehydes, muskiness, and bountiful florals. The earthy and sharp green aspects of this fragrance are particularly intriguing to me; I like the way galbanum, angelica root, and ambrette seed are used here.

    I’m in the USA.

Thank you Rachel for bringing Jonquille to life for my olfactive senses.
Darren Alan has a way of telling wonderful stories through his creations. Whether it be the fresh earthy feel of being outdoors after a rainstorm (After The Rain), spending time in a library cozied up with an old classic leather bound book (Vintage Novel), or imagining what scent emitted from the nostalgia of “that which has been lost” (Sweet Repose..one of my personal favorites). Each of these creations have perfectly conveyed their intended stories in my mind’s eye with my own special touch. I look forward to experiencing this newest creation.

  • I love that this fragrance took Rachel back to her childhood. What a special memory. Everything yellow and golden in a spring bouquet sounds like something to look forward to. Love that there is a touch of green. The Georgia O’Keeffe painting is stunning. I don’t recall seeing that at her museum this summer, but the exhibits change. Thanks for a little peek into the future season. Thanks for the chance. USA.
