Now sleeps the crimson petal, now the white;

Nor waves the cypress in the palace walk;

Nor winks the gold fin in the porphyry font.

The firefly wakens; waken thou with me. ~ Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal by Alfred, Lord Tennyson

New Zealand native Tiffany Witehira is the Creative Director and founder of Curionoir, a small, independent perfume house dedicated to composing fragrances which are inspired by Ms. Witehira’s Maori background, personal history, and unique interests. These extraits (and all Curionoir fragrances exist solely as perfume extraits) tend to be singularly exquisite and unlike any others you might have smelt previously – precisely because each one is visionary in its scope. I was fortunate to receive a sample of Curionoir’s 2023 oeuvre Moon Moss this past week, and I found it so compelling; the perfume demanded that I review it. Far be it from me to deny fragrant exposition to something as lovely as Moon Moss.

Ms. Witehira’s depiction of an Antipodean nocturnal landscape is palpable and very nearly visceral in its description: primaeval environs moist and fecund, dappled with silvery shadow. What evokes the gliding of swans for Tiffany translates as a white peacock to Lord Tennyson; they share the serene imagery which cries out for the lover’s awakening. To be as one with a natural setting may be as holy as it gets – and Curionoir Moon Moss possesses a distinctly sacred sylvan quality; it is tranquil and mysterious.

Some of the notes which are listed may be interpreted in several ways, (I try to be a thorough researcher). Some say that acquiring an orchid essential oil or absolute is highly unlikely – yet there are sources available where one may locate an orchid-infused oil or maceration – primarily for cosmetic usage; the same goes for white lily. To evoke their aromas, skillful sleight-of-hand is required, and the employment of some of the fine fragrance houses’ offerings (such as Firmenich’s Lilyflore®, Givaudan’s Nympheal®, or cyclamen aldehyde, amongst others). Algae may or may not refer to seaweed absolute, an olfactory material usually sourced from France: it is an extremely complex aromatic adjuvant to verdancy best utilized with great care. Curionoir Moon Moss gleans its green facets from these materials in combination with the inky, forest floor tones of oakmoss (oakmoss and seaweed get along famously!), and the über-green floralcy of hyacinth, with its indolic, slightly-soiled-petticoat decadence. Amplify green? Birch (betula lenta) is present and on the job: fresh and slightly medicinal, birch essential oil is chock full of methyl salicylate – that which is readily identified as wintergreen scent and flavor – and present as a topical analgesic in many sports rubs. In small doses, it imparts a welcome liveliness. Tiffany Witehira rounds and gentles Moon Moss with the comforting balsamic, warm dryness of cedarwood.

Curionoir Moon Moss conjures one particular word for me whenever I smell it: wistful. It is a perfume filled with longing and crepuscular beauty; a multi-tiered fragrance possessed of classical bone structure. Resolute and wise, it clings to both garment and flesh with tender tenacity under the light of the moon.

There is nothing you can see that is not a flower; there is nothing you can think that is not the moon. ~ Matsuo Basho

Notes: orchid, hyacinth, white lily, algae, oak moss, birch, cedarwood

  • Who doesn’t want to get their nose on a perfume that is “wistful” contains oak moss, orchid, and hyacinth! I surely do. I’ve never heard of this house, but this article referencing all of the nature the perfume evokes has piqued my interest in it. Ohio, USA

    This perfume sounds absolutely magical to me. Something I’d wear stepping into my favorite fantasy book. I’d love to wear it and tell all the faeries about it!

  • This sounds magical! This is what I’d wear stepping into my favorite fantasy book as dandelion fuzz floated about… the faeries would all gather near me to ask what I was wearing and how I smelled so good! Sounds like an amazing smell. Unique. My kind of fragrance.

  • Love your descriptions, Ida!
    Moon Moss is unlike any “green” perfume I’ve smelled- and it is addicting too.

    Thank you for sharing its beauty with your words.

    An algae note sounds super intriguing! I love the story behind the scent! Pennsylvania,US

  • Happy birthday, Indigo! The review really elaborares on what looks ike a simple blend from the notes into an enchanted forest!

  • Although it wasn’t at night, I saw a swan the last time I walked by the river I live near. It is a little bit shocking seeing such an enormous white bird gliding in the middle of a body of water. Anyway, the notes of Moon Moss, fantasy or not, along with Ida’s writing, conjure a very specific place and time. I want to go there!

  • Indigo is ten years already?? Congratulations!! Ok but that name?! Moon Moss how incredibly sentimental and timeless and poetic. Even the 4ml flacon/label harkens to the vintages in my closet. The notes sound positively ethereal! The cooling juxtaposed to the inviting, balanced with the grounding. What a beautiful blend that I truly long to try. I cannot think of another fragrance that has that grouping?!
    Thank you for the chance. In California.

    Sounds like a walk in the woods in springtime, stopping by a pond and enjoying the stillness of the night. The notes sound wonderful. Yes please! NY State

    Marvellous exaltation of another Curionoir beauty, Braveo dear ida and I am so glad that my friend Tiffany’s Creations are available in the US, thanks to Indigo. I, In the EU have to wait until I venture back to Auckland for such pleasures. My nose and I will acquire Moon Moss in the Spring. Not entering the draw but wanted to recommend highly to readers in The US, to try all the Curionoir collection, I have most but really adore Opia, Orpheus Incarnate, Ngatu Pa, Purotu Rose, 415AD, Pablo, They are magnificent. Tiffany is an exceptional woman, of mixed maori, French and Italian heritage, I see her each time I am in NZ. Thank you dear Ida for highlighting her work, Michelyn and Indigo.

  • Oh my! What a review!! Ida inspires with the evocative Alfred, Lord Tennyson quote – to the picture of gorgeous Tiffany Witehira in THAT DRESS- and the tactile scent descriptions. Big fan of Curionoir and Ann’s Indigo. Would love to try this one. Thanks for the opportunity- in the US

    I love green scents. They’re just so lively. This seems to be a particular standout scent, and the evocation Ida creates of this scent intrigue me! US.

  • I am encouraged that there are still perfumers pursuing the rare and challenging notes available in nature…and using them for art, not mass appeal. Thank you for this lovely article giving insight into Curionoir Moon Moss extrait. I would love to try it! Thank you for this generous draw. I live in NH, USA.

  • A perfume that evokes an Antipodean nocturnal landscape sounds like a worthwhile sniff. I’m intrigued that Tiffany Witehira relies on her Māori heritage in her compositions. The white flowers in combination with the oakmoss, woods and algae seem hypnotic. A++ for using crepuscular! I’m in the US.

  • Tiffany Witehira is fascinating, as you can tell she is a true to her heritage as an indie. I would like to smell wistful. Green facets and floralcy
    I would love to win Moon Moss.

  • Moon Moss sounds so, so beautiful — and special! (I also think that Tiffany Witehira, in the photograph, is dressed to match the way I imagine the scent smells!) I’ve tried 415 AD, which is gorgeous as well, and I cannot wait to smell Moon Moss. I’m in NY, USA.

  • I’m curious how Tiffany Witehira’s Maori background impacts her perfumery; small independent perfumers are doing some of the most interesting work out there. Like Lauryn said, “singularly exquisite.” Moon Moss sounds like a really interesting nocturnal take on the damp, earthy forest, focusing on some dramatic floral elements. That combination of oakmoss and seaweed must be richly inky and savory, given color by the green hyacinth and medicinal birch. Moon Moss sounds impeccably composed. Great review.

    I’m in the USA.

    Thank you the writeup on this interesting perfume. It does make me feel like I’m taking a night time walk in one of the primordial jungles, discovering what life forms might exist.

    I smelled this for the first time just the other day before reading this and was equally enamored! I love the green floral bouquet that smells just like a florist shop and how the algae and moss mix in perfectly. It is a magical scent! Thanks for such a beautiful review, Ida. More people should know about this scent! US

  • I like that it is tranquil and mysterious. Beautiful photos to accompany this review. I’ve grown hyacinth before and they have a lovely fragrance. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. USA.

  • foreverscents says:

    I always love a wistful and crepuscular fragrance. Ida brilliantly described how the notes contribute to a wistful feeling, a nocturnal broodiness. I am very interested in the orchid note and how it combines with the algae note. Moon Moss sounds like a very special fragrance.

    I’m intrigued to familiarize myself with Curionoir’s collected works, and “Moon Moss” when Ida says: “These extraits tend to be singularly exquisite and unlike any others you might have smelt previously” and “I found it so compelling; the perfume demanded that I review it.” I appreciated learning that “oakmoss and seaweed get along famously” and also Ida’s description of the hyacinth when she says “the über-green floralcy of hyacinth, with its indolic, slightly-soiled-petticoat decadence.” This sounds like a good “green”-style fragrance which I’d like to try. I live in MD, U.S.A.

  • Curionoir is one of my favorite niche fragrance houses. The creations are unique, high-quality, and beautiful. I have not tried Moon Moss yet, but it sounds stunning. Ida’s comments about it possessing a “distinctly sacred sylvan quality” and being “tranquil and mysterious” make me want to try it even more. I love orchid and white lily, as well as oakmoss and birch. The combination of notes sounds very intriguing. Thank you, Ida, for the beautiful review, and thank you to Indigo Perfumery for the giveaway! I am located in the USA.

  • What caught me most was saying Curionoir Moon Moss smells “wistful.” Perfume that smells melancholy, wistful, and dreamy is GORGEOUS and often otherworldly. Just the description makes this smell completely like a mystical realm. How magical! From Portland, OR.
