ÇaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery: Ryan Hunts of Beach Geeza + From Film to Fragrance Giveaway

Ryan Hunts of Beach Geeza

Ryan Hunts of Beach Geeza

Profile: Beach Geeza was born out of a passion for world travel, being open to spontaneous creativity and surrendering to the magic of happy accidents.  I was born in San Diego California in 1980 and I come from a family of entrepreneurs who always think outside of the box.

Young Ryan and the Flowbee circa 1992

My father was a Master Carpenter and late one night when he was finishing up his work and closing shop, he picked up a vacuum to suck the sawdust out of his overgrown hair.  And at that moment he had a vision to invent a vacuum haircutter, which eventually became the ‘Flowbee Home Haircutting System’.

Some years later my Parents decided to move our family to Padre Island Texas.  It was at this time where I began to develop a fondness for the beach lifestyle and a love for the salty sea air of the coasts. From the humid aromas of the Gulf Coast where we lived to the fresh piney sea breezes of the Pacific Northwest where we spent our Summers. I was in love with the scent of these environments, and they gave me a deep thirst to experience more of what’s out there in the world.

Then one Summer, I was introduced to the concept of a person’s signature scent.  A friend of my dad’s, who happened to be a truly masculine Man, had a scent about him that was very peculiar.  It seemed like his natural smell, however, even the inside of his car had this distinct aroma.  I remember the scent was not overbearing yet it was always noticeable in his presence and the Ladies would swoon who came around him, I had to know what this scent was.  As it turns out, he wore Ralph Lauren Polo Green aftershave balm. This was a revelation for me on the power of personal scent and sparked a lifelong journey for me to discover my own signature scent.

Ryan Hunts of Beach Geeza was a cameraman before starting his fragrance house

Ryan Hunts of Beach Geeza filming in Indonesia

Years later after graduating college I ventured into the film and television business in a career that spanned for nearly two decades. On one project I was being flown around the world as a Cameraman to capture footage of various cultures.  From the crowded spice markets of Jaipur to smoky temples full of incense in Bangkok, my craving for life experience was being satisfied and I was getting exposed to many new alluring smells.  During one leg of the journey, we were in Bali Indonesia filming in a lush tropical garden near the beach.  And at this moment I caught the distinct aroma of vetiver, I couldn’t see where it was, but its scent was wafting around my nose and mixing with the fresh sea salt air blowing in from the ocean.  It smelled like pure heaven. And I remember asking myself, ‘Can I recreate this scent?  Could this even become my signature scent?’  I flew back home with these questions blossoming in my mind.

I poured over every YouTube video, website and blog on perfume creation that I could find. Then one night, I was having a lively conversation with two good friends of mine about creating a fragrance house and spontaneously the name ‘Beach Geeza’ popped out of my mouth and they both shouted, ‘That’s it!  Beach Geeza!  That’s you Man!’  Right then and there the vision was born to create perfumes that smell like the ultimate beach vacation.

Over the coming weeks I ordered several samples of raw materials, pipettes, glass beakers, a scale and I started blending. It became a new creative outlet for me that I was willing to indulge in at every spare moment.  I remember being so excited about the idea of Beach Geeza fragrances that I couldn’t go to sleep at night. And over time as the early formulations began to take shape, I felt optimistic that I was carrying on the family tradition of being an entrepreneur who thinks outside of the box

After about a year of consistent practice and learning to surrender to the magic of happy accidents I finally completed my first fragrance, ‘Juniper Java’ which has vetiver from Indonesia and became my personal signature scent.  And not too long after that came my second fragrance ‘Coco Moon,’ which to this day is the most popular perfume in the Beach Geeza line and is heralded by some fans as the ultimate beach vacation scent.  Over the last few years, the Beach Geeza house has accumulated a diverse customer base and they continually encourage me to grow as a Perfumer, the journey continues!

On American Perfumery: Even though the art of perfumery has been around for centuries, it still feels like a new form of creative expression here in America. Given America’s vast diversity I’m hopeful it’ll cultivate a sublime wave of original work in the coming years. The fragrance classics of tomorrow are being created today and a new generation of consumers will demand originality.  I’m excited to be among those who are contributing to the medium.

  • Thank you Ryan for sharing your childhood memories and experiences. I love that you got inspired by the tropical garden in Bali for your personal scent which spurred you to pursue the art of perfumery. I adore the beach and Coco moon sounds beautiful! I hope to make it my personal scent. Based in the UK.

  • Wow, the flowbee, hahaha, that brings back memories!
It was very interesting to hear the origins of the brand, in particular how the Beech Geeza name was created, and Ryan’s hunt for a signature.
I would absolutely love to win this one, as I’ve heard how fantastic it is but it is not readily available in my country for sampling.
    Thank you from Canada!

  • I found the really intriguing details fascinating. This review is something truly amazing. I really appreciate all the work put into it. I live in Poland, EU.

  • OMG BEACH GEEZA!!! Ryan Hunt makes some incredible fragrances! I’ve tried every single one. Like a lot of perfumers Ryan draws a lot of his inspiration from all the wonderful places he has traveled to. The juice itself is high quality stuff that can last for 2 days on skin, no joke. Coco Moon just makes me feel so good inside every time I where it. I just have a 2ml sample but I make it last as long as I can. Would love a full bottle! Thank you so much for featuring this house as he puts out some great fragrances. Thank you, Ryan, for giving away a bottle that is very generous. Anyone who wins this will be getting an amazing fragrance, hope it’s me 🙂

I love the journey from describing his fathers signature scent, then getting into perfumery and ordering materials (im a chemist so i love the pics of the process) and pipets! I live in the EU.

  • Such and amazing story by Ryan and how he discovered he wanted to make fragrances. He seems so enthusiastic about what he does and I bet his fragrances are awesomes. I would love to try Coco Moon as he states it is the ultimate vacation fragrance.

This is such an interesting story. I am so curious about Juniper Java scent and I love the fact that vetiver was part of the initial drive to start with crating and recreating wonderful and specific scents associated with beaches. I love being on or around beaches, the air smells different, all senses are happy. Unfortunately, all the countries I lived in have no “salty” beaches. I hope I will be lucky enough to win Coco Moon and transport myself to a deserved beach vacation. Greetings from Austria, EU

  • Hi Ryan! ❤️❤️ Thank you for sharing your story! I love salty marine air! We are super excited to experience your fragrances! Thank you for this wonderful opportunity! ❤️ USA

  • What an amazing story…I loved how Ryan’s love for perfume was inspired by vintage fragrances, such as Polo Ralph Lauren…a staple for me.
Also: very funny how the name of the brand popped up in a conversation among friends!
The notes of the perfume seem lovely, would love to try it…great vacation scent

Vetiver is my favorite scent. Hands down. I find it super interesting that Ryan’s first perfume was chasing after recreating a Vetiver scent. I would love to try any of Ryan’s perfumes.

  • Excellent array of notes here. Love sandalwood and bergamot blended with vanilla, pineapple, and coconut. I would bet this smells very rich yet vacation. Thanks. Tennessee, USA

  • Gracias Ryan for sharing your memories and how did you arrive to the perfumery world. Of course, when you asked yourself if you could recreate the scent you snif in a Bali lush tropical garden near the beach, your destiny was clear! I always think best perfumers are great travelers and you confirm my idea. Hope you always be a beach geeza… because when growing up in a beach is a indelible mark. 100% agree with your idea that the fragrance classics of tomorrow are being created today. Coco Moon sounds perfect for this torrid summer in Spain. Love the opening of fresh pineapple, coconut and bergamot! I live in Spain, EU.

  • I am a big fan of this series and it’s where I discover so many American indie perfumers. What I thought was great about Ryan’s path to perfumery that when he was in Bali filming the aromas of vetiver, the beach and sea air was his aha moment.
He seems like a creative chill guy too

  • As someone who comes from multi-generational entrepreneurial family, I found Ryan’s story relatable. I love the beach-y scent genre and am always open to trying a new iteration of coconut. Given the brand name, I’m not surprised at all that it’s the most popular in the line. I am from USA.

A captivating and beautiful story of how Ryan found his calling as a perfumer it just highlights the power and depth of scent. I am intrigued by the notes in Coco moon. I have liked CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery Facebook page. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

I like Ryan’s initiative and belief in himself. I think one advantage to having perfumers who don’t have formal training is that it may be easier for them to think outside the box, to be able to break rules they were unaware of. And for him to be a big Steve Martin fan makes perfect sense to me. I am one who believes that talent is widely distributed in the population, but not everyone who has it is able to discover it and use it. I am in the US, in North Carolina.

  • Ryan Hunts and Beach GEEZA is new to me. I love that his dad invented the flowerbee
I live in the USA and really enjoy reading about his career as a film maker and perfumer

  • So lovely! Ryan’s family seems to carry the gene of invention and innovation in its DNA and that only makes us lucky. From machines to perfumes, more goodies for us!
Coco Moon does indeed sound like the perfect holiday scent…coconut and tuberose, yummy summer combo!
I am writing from the EU and have liked the CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery FB page, so count me in twice.
    Thanks!

  • I enjoyed reading about how your whole life led you to where you are and what you’re doing now. Thanks for sharing Ryan. I’m in Texas

  • What I found fascinating in Ryan’s journey to perfumery (as happens for most us though with different experiences and paths taken) is how the love of beaches in youth and then exploring the world as a cameraman introduced him also to the smells of the world, and that led to his wanting to re-create smells he had experienced. Coco Moon has lovely ingredients and I too could use a beach vacation using Coco Moon. Thanks for the article and draw. From the USA.

  • I have heard a lot of YouTube reviewers talk about Beach Geeza, it is lovely to get some background about the perfumer as well as inspirations behind the brand. The brands sounds like grounded and willing to be creative and take some risks. I have heard so much about coco moon and looking forward to trying it on soon.

  • Always love hearing about generations of entrepreneurs. I’ve sampled all their fragrances and they’re fantastic. This is a great indie house, would love to get a bottle of coco moon for my collection. Thanks from Canada!

  • roxhas1cat says:

I love San Padre Island!! I vaguely remember the flowbee haircutting gadget. Ryan sure has gotten around. The notes for Coco Moon sound very nice. I didn’t know Miami had a perfumery congress. I have not heard of this line before now. Thanks for the informative article and the chance to win. USA.

  • GennyLeigh says:

As Ryan says, Coco Moon sounds like the ultimate beach scent. The tropical fruits, coconut, tuberose, jasmine and vanilla base remind me of trips to the Caribbean. He certainly has had an interesting path to perfumery. It seems like his love of travel, willingness to try new things and familial entrepreneurial spirit (the Flowbee!) certainly played key roles. I too love Steve Martin, particularly his banjo playing. MD, USA.

  • So interesting that scent was always prominent for you, even when you were in other careers. And what a creative way to carry on the family tradition of creative entrepreneurship! Writing from the EU.

  • Alonte Jennings says:

This gives me a deeper appreciation for Ryan and his brand! The backstory of how he was filming in Indonesia in the tropical lush forest and smelt veviter mixed with that tropical smell instantly gave me a olfactory experience of Juniper Java!

  • Donte Hughey says:

I remember being a child and seeing the commercials for the “Flowbee” and thought it was the coolest thing. It’s fascinating that that is Ryan’s father, Wow. It’s also fascinating that he perfumed his own signature scent and is now making these great fragrances without formal training. Based in the U.S.

  • I love this so much! Living in Texas, our main vacation spot is the Port A beach not far from Padre and it gives us so many happy memories. I’m also very inspired to hear about his self-taught path to perfumery- dream it and then do it. It’s difficult to have a signature scent when you want them all though! I’d love to try some of these fragrances 🙂 in TX.

  • Thanks for this interesting article Ryan!

As someone who has lived in the UK for many years now, Beach “Geeza” always makes me smile. I love the name and I love saying it!

Like yourself, it’s Vetiver that is in my signature scent whih is Terre d’Hermes (Parfum). For me it’s a professional, classy scent that goes perfectly with my personality and business look.

However, when the suit comes off and I have time for some fun and relaxation, I generally wear more sweeter fragrances. Coco Moon sounds delicious and I would love to make it my casual signature scent!

    Greetings from the UK!

  • This is my first time hearing/reading about this house and this particular fragrance. But it has coconut, so I am sold! Love coconut to death!!
    Thank you!
    Europe

  • I don’t wish to be entered in the contest as the notes aren’t my cup of tea and would please someone else, but I just had to comment! I hope Mr. Hunts develops the sea air and vetiver blend one day because that is EXACTLY my cup of tea! Great article; a wonderful tale of the journey and creativity of this man!

  • Bryant Worley says:

I really appreciated his entrepreneurial spirit, creativity, and drive. I also loved the journey, from describing his fathers signature scent, then getting into perfumery.

It was very interesting to hear the origins of the brand, in particular how the Beech Geeza name was created, and Ryan’s hunt for a signature.

I absolutely adore stories of people for whom nothing is ever impossible. Ryan Hunts is 200% one of them and I am so grateful he shared his life story and creative journey with us. It feels fascinating and extremely empowering. I like how Ryan got captivated by the scent of vetiver in Bali, I do believe it smelled like pure heaven. His out of the box and forward thinking is truly admirable and the awareness that the fragrance classics of tomorrow are being created today is precious. Coco Moon sounds fantastic, I would love to have the opportunity to try this true ultimate beach vacation scent, as heralded by the fans of the brand. Thank you for the draw. Based in the EU

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Wow! Ryan Hunts has creativity in his DNA. What an interesting life he’s led so far! I love the thought of being so inspired by a scent while traveling that he was determined to recreate it. I’ve sampled Coco Moon and it is as amazing as Steve Martin. Thank you for the draw, from the US.

  • I always love hearing about the perfumer’s journey into the craft. The Flobee is a classic American invention, ha! Fortuitous experiences that lead into our callings, without the journey and the history, the perfumes that are created just wouldn’t be the same. Thanks for the fun profile of Ryan’s journey. Coco Moon sounds beautiful and I’d love to try it at some point in time.
I like CaFleureBon on Facebook. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • This was a wonderful introduction to Beach Geeza and Ryan’s unique path to perfumery. I certainly didn’t expect to read about the invention of the “Flowbee System,” though world travel for media production was surely a terrific way to experience the smells of many places and cultures, and develop a nose for capturing a place in perfume. I like that Ryan chose a particular theme for his fragrances, highlighting “fresh warm vibes” and letting us “smell like we’re on vacation.” I look forward to trying another American perfumer soon—Coco Moon sounds like a lot of fun, and I’m intrigued how Ryan interpreted the classic Bay Rum genre.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • Coconut and tuberose – I absolutely love them and Coco Moon seems to have plenty of them! I think I will love this fragrance!
    Europe
    Thanks!

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved learning about Ryan Hunts’ of Beach Geeza path to perfumery. Including his childhood in San Diego, Padre Island, and the Pacific Northwest. Experiencing Polo Green aftershave for the first time. His experience in the film industry that had him traveling all around the world experiencing different facets and aromas. I think what really got him was the Vetiver and Salty Sea Breeze that he was inspired to recreate. I’ve heard great things about Beach Geeza Coco Moon. I am from the USA.

  • Impressive career for his age, reading Ryan Hunts himself telling us how he started, and what he went through to get where he’s at right now, was so satisfying.
‘That’s it! Beach Geeza! That’s you Man!’
Exactly the same thing happened with me, when I decided to name my bakery
Because of the Coco Moon notes , making and eating Coconut and Pineapple Cake came to mind, I just can’t help, but to relate all fragrances to some sort of food.
Like Ryan I also have diverse customer base, and trying to grow as a Pastry Chef, the journey is endless
Appreciate everything in Ryan Hunts article, and the giveaway campaign

I love a good tropical fragrance and wonder how his Gulf Coast history might have a influence on it. I live in the USA.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’m about the same age as Ryan, and I remember how widely used “Polo Green” was: it was definitely one of the first fragrances I had heard of. Also, I think that it’s interesting that the smell of incense and vetiver became a part of Ryan’s increasing fondness of scents. I live in the U.S.A.

  • IvanVelikov says:

When I think of self-made people, I usually think of a quote from the great Coco Chanel:
“Fashion has 2 purposes, comfort and love.Beauty comes when fashion succeeds”
The same could be applied to fragrances, and Ryan Hunts , I like how he stayed in his adventurous lane, and never looked back.
I particularly like how he’s looking for
“new generation of consumers will demand originality”
Like him , I like working with clients, who also look for originality, Ryan is making bespoke fragrances, and i make bespoke suits
Steve Martin i like too, but i think Coco Moon will also fit Pierce Brosnan as Andrew “Andy” Osnard in “The Tailor of Panama”
Thank you Ryan Hunts , and Cafleurebon

Thank you for the insights into your road as a perfumer. It sounds like you had a great childhood, filled with wonderful inspiration, both in terms of your parents and the locations that you grew up in. It’s such a fantastic olfactory experience getting to travel to different countries and ‘smell’ your way around a culture – I find that to leave a stronger olfactive footprint in my memory.

In particular, I’m sure it’s no coincidence that you smelt natural vetiver along with a sea breeze that ignited the creative spark.

The notes in Coco Moon sound absolutely glorious and I woulove love to smell it!

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Oneka N. Stargin says:

I honestly thought Ryan had a background in chemistry. I think it’s fascinating to know that a scent of vetivar would cause him to embark on such a great adventure of creating his own fragrances. I absolutely love his fragrances and will continue to support him. i live in Chattanooga, Tn

  • Coming from entrepreneurial family, from a camera guy, to perfumer,I’m happy Ryan Hunts found his happy place
His own story transported me “from the humid aromas of the Gulf Coast where we lived to the fresh piney sea breezes of the Pacific Northwest” , and I learned about Ryan desire to connect with his customers, and grow as perfumer , praiseworthy dedication.
I do believe Coco Moon is sweet, and topical , with a seductive white flowers , a treat I’d love to win
    Thanks for the draw

  • I’m familiar with Beach Geeza fragrances, and if I have to rate my favorite ones:
    1. Cocoa Moon EDP
    2. Coco Moon EDP
    3. Bay Rum EDP
People should be aware of two things Ryan never mentioned in the article:
    1. All his EDP’s are really loud, and powerful, with both great longevity and projection .
    2. There are differences between his EDP’s and EDT’s , it’s not just concentration and performance, the scent profiles are tweaked , similar , but definitely not the same.
Coco Moon to me is not a gourmand, yes there’s sweetness, but the it also gets really woody in the base, the cedar is quite dominant.
In my opinion people should buy both sample sets , the EDP’s and EDT’s , and choose wisely.
I knew most of the information about Ryan already , except for Steve Martin being his favorite actor
Both profiles I already follow, @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

  • I like how Ryan Hunts took his time to perfect his life, and fragrances. It shows his level of dedication and self-expectation .
From Coco Moon I’m expecting Piña Colada in a bottle, and to be caught in the rain by the smell
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • The thing that fascinated me about Ryan’s journey is how he is using his travel experience to inspire his fragrances. I’m from Colorado, US
