ÇaFleureBon Profiles In American Perfumery: Michael Paul of Day Three Fragrances + La Tacita De Cafe Giveaway

Michael Paul of Day Three Fragrances

Michael Paul of Day Three Fragrances

Profile: My transition from full time professional magician to full time perfumer felt seamless, and happened almost subconsciously.  Such a transition might seem unlikely, considering how focused I’d been on my performing career for the last twenty-four years, but looking back on it now, I probably should have expected that perfumery would eventually become a part of my life.

Michael Paul of Day Three Fragrances auditioned for America's Got Talent

Michael Paul auditioned for America’s Got Talent

I was eight years old, when David Copperfield began performing his magical TV specials. I wanted to be just like him. Lots of kids that age become interested in magic tricks, and eventually grow out of that phase shortly thereafter. Yet, my obsession with illusions never faded.  Certainly, my father played a big role. He was both a sharp entrepreneur and an amazing drummer, and he encouraged me constantly to pursue my passion for performance. He always emphasized the role of hard work in artistic success.  From the first time I performed a magic trick, he was both my harshest critic, and my biggest fan. Eventually the hard work paid off; I found myself performing on the biggest stages and in the most prestigious magic venues in the world.

Early on in my performing career, I recognized the impact that fragrance could have on my audience.  Of course, my personal fragrance would be important for those times that I was interacting close up with my audiences, (I wore a lot of Prada Amber Homme for its soapy, clean feel). Yet I also realized that I could use fragrance to enhance certain magical effects.  In one effect, I’d invite a woman on stage and fold a paper napkin into the shape of a rose. Then, she would be asked to imagine her favorite flower.

After she thinks for a moment of her favorite flower, she is asked to smell the paper rose… It now smells like the flower she is thinking of.  Often, the smell of her flower would evoke powerful emotions, and my volunteer would be moved to tears.  Scent had transformed a cute trick into a piece of true astonishment. I enjoyed working with scent in my shows, and eventually began blending materials in my free time, for the fun of it.  Experimenting with, and learning the finer details of blending was relaxing; a perfect hobby to get lost in when my brain needed a break from thinking about magic.

Then, COVID-19 changed everything. On a Tuesday night, probably a month into being locked down, my daughter Dakota was sitting on the floor in my office, likely sensing the stress that was building within me, (suddenly unable to work as a performer). She had a fist full of scent strips, freshly dipped in the amber bottles of perfume formulas that lined my desk. She sat quiet for a moment, then smelling one of her favorites, looked up and said “you should sell these”.  I responded how any reasonable adult would: By giving her a long list of reasons why starting a fragrance house is impractical and explaining that it would be next to impossible to compete in such a crowded market.  “Why do you have to compete?” she said. “I mean, what if someone really liked this perfume and just wanted to buy a bottle? It is art, not competition, right?” And with that suggestion from my teenager, my fragrance house, Day Three Fragrances was born.

This Bible verse inspired the name: “And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.” Genesis 1:11-12 ESV

Life is Like a Box of Perfume

To say we started from scratch would be an understatement. There was no budget, no marketing experience, and no industry connections. Just a sleight of hand artist whose only professional experience involved crafting moments of magic. But as luck would have it, magic and perfumery are, philosophically speaking, very similar arts. Like magicians, perfumers create special moments for their audience that cause them to think, feel, and be moved by the illusions created by a sort of (olfactive) sleight of hand. And like magic, perfume can spark intrigue, or transport the wearer to a different time and place. A good perfume is truly magical.

Michael Paul of Day Three Fragrances with his wife accepting the Aftel award for La Tacita De Cafe on Thursday May 11, 2023 at the historic Cicada Club in Los Angeles.

It was only a couple of months after Day Three’s initial launch that I decided to submit a fragrance to the 2023 Art and Olfaction Awards, our first real exposure to the perfume community. That submission, La Tacita De Cafe, would go on to win the coveted Aftel award for handmade perfumes.  At the time of this writing, the Art and Olfaction Awards show happened about a week ago, and it still hasn’t really hit me that Day Three Fragrances was awarded such a prestigious honor.

Friends, family, reviewers, and other supporters have been asking, “What’s next for Day Three Fragrances?”  My response is simple. I’m just going to stay focused on creating magic.

On American Perfumery: It really feels like American perfumery is in an exciting place right now, because of the diversity of perspectives on the scene.  It is becoming a reflection of this rich tapestry of traditions and influences that we have here in the states.  Culturally speaking, we have this melting pot, and it is resulting in some really beautiful, bold perfumery.

Favorite American Artist: Picking a favorite American artist is a lot like picking a favorite food… I have so many favorites that my answer may change from day to day, depending on my mood.  But today, my favorite American artist has to be DJ Jazzy Jeff. You might know Jeff from his appearances on “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” TV show with Will Smith. He’s an amazing DJ, who has his own style of mixing and mashing up old school classics.  He’s also innovated turntablism and live remixing in a way that’s all his own. In a crowded field of amazing American DJ’s, Jazzy Jeff stands out as both classic and highly original.

  • Scentsational Exchange says:

Wow! What an impressive article! What I find fascinating about Michael’s path to perfumery is the unexpected journey that led him to create Day Three Fragrances. Starting as a young boy with a passion for magic and illusions, he never let go of his fascination with the art form, even when others may have moved on from childhood interests. His father played a pivotal role in nurturing his dreams and instilling the value of hard work in artistic pursuits.

The way Michael integrated fragrance into his magic performances, using scent to enhance the impact of his tricks, showcases his keen understanding of the power of scent to evoke emotions and create astonishment. It’s inspiring to see how he recognized the potential of fragrance as an art form and began experimenting with blending materials in his free time, purely for the joy of it.

The parallel he draws between magic and perfumery, both arts that create moments of wonder, intrigue, and transport, is thought-provoking. It highlights the magical qualities of perfume and how it can deeply impact individuals on an emotional level.

Michael’s journey from a young magician to a perfumer and fragrance creator is a testament to following one’s passions, embracing unexpected opportunities, and recognizing the power of art to connect and move people. It’s a story of perseverance, creativity, and the magic that can emerge when different artistic realms intersect.

    I live in Europe.

  • I found his personality merged into his path in perfumery fascinating. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • I’m a sucker for a story involving people completely switching careers to follow their passions. I love how he talked about incorporating fragrance into his acts as a magician – so innovative! It is true, both magicians and perfumers create these little moments of magic that transport us to a happier state, and for that I humbly thank them. This fragrance sounds really lovely, and it must be since it immediaetly became an award winner. Would love to give this one a sniff. I live in NC, USA.

  • I loved how he incorporated fragrance into his magic show and brought people to tears. That is talent and ingenuity in the making! Necessity is the mother of invention or ingenuity! I live in Minnesota.

  • JulieeCee says:

Michael’s journey into perfumery is awesome and inspiring; in a way, I think all perfumers are magicians!

Thanks for an introduction of the house. They sound great! His daughter encouraging him was quite touching. Will definitely be checking them out. Thanks for the opportunity. From USA.

  • What a lovely story about Michael Paul. I do enjoy hearing how perfumers come to be, and it’s wonderful that his daughter is so supportive. As a lover of coffee perfumes, I truly hope I’m lucky this time! Hello from Hawaii, USA!

  • I found it fascinating that the teenaged daughter with simplicity of an innocent sincere question launched the Dream into Reality. I actually purchased a sample set for my birthday and at present testing Del Mar. Thus far it is a wonderful scent
Top notes: Lime Zest, Lime, Ginger, Bergamot.
Heart notes: Jasmine, Lily of the Valley, Sea Breeze accord.
Base notes: Coconut, Beach Musks, Amber.
and enjoying these new fragrance samples. 🙂

    I live in Florida.

  • I enjoyed reading about Michael Paul’s career as a magician and how he incorporated scent into his acts. Congratulations on winning Aftel award, Michael! Thanks for another great review and draw. Mich USA

Hello from Florida, and thanks for the wonderful profile!

It’s rare to meet career magicians, so it was interesting to hear about Michael’s experience in that field — and, of course, how it led to his career in perfumery. Clearly the transition was successful, since he’s won such praise. Congrats on the Aftel Prize!

  • Dubaiscents says:

I just happened to be wearing La Tacita de Cafe today! I immediately got a full bottle after trying it from the discovery set, it such a gorgeous scent and to know that it was created by a magician makes me smile! I love Michael’s story and wish him much success with his future creations.

  • chrisskins says:

I love that his daughter kicked off the whole house. What better reason to follow your heart than your teenager telling you to go for it out of passion and quality, not competition. That’s a good kid with good parents. I live in NY.

  • His journey from being a magician to a perfumer and how his childhood interest in magic along with the influence of his father and the realization of fragrance’s impact, played a role in this transition.

  • Patricia R. says:

I like most that alluded fine untangible line of transiting between mind and senses. It is not illusion it seems objective reality when our mind uses power of memory to bring out the sensation of smell. That is magic and it is for good purpose this young man chose the path that brought him from illusion into this real creation in the bottle.
    Thanks from Slovakia

  • What I found most fascinating was that the company name was inspired by a Bible verse and the verse was included in the article. US

  • olgAPOISON says:

I love the path from magic to perfume, all self made. I love all of the notes coffee, rum, Tonka. This one was super fun to read. Im from Europe.

  • I am always impressed by the determination and “I can do this” attitude. Beautiful success story, Michael Paul and Day Three Fragrance!
    Arizona, USA

  • Ken White says:

From magic to perfume, or is it the other way around? He’s clearly got a creative mind to do either. I’d love to try the brand New Jersey, USA

  • Of course, I am touched by his story regarding the words of his daughter. Actually, the picture of Michael and his family is a dream family portrait – even if we are men, we are feeling like the best version of us in the heart of our families.

Regarding La Tacita de Cafe, the heart notes are like music for my nose – bayahibe rose, Dominican coffee, caramel and rum.

Please count me in, I live in EU. And BIG THANKS for the chance @CaFleureBon & @daythreefragrances!

  • cynthmarie says:

This origin story was a joy to read. It shows that with the right work, motivation, and family support, an interest can turn into a career. Congrats on the award and I hope to experience your perfumes soon. In Texas.

  • FragranceIsMe says:

This is what I love about the fragrance community. We all come from diverse backgrounds but share a common love of the olfactive art.
Whenever I get a chance to speak with a founder/owner/perfumer/artisan, one of my favorite questions is, “How do your skills, previous jobs, experiences in life add to your fragrance creations?”. I think Michael’s answer is one of the coolest answers, yet. MAGIC, ILLUSION…oh my goodness…just what I look for in my scent journeys. I’m looking forward to the experience 🙂

  • Trinity33 says:

From performing magic to composing perfume. What a transition! I love that Michael Paul was able to incorporate his love for scent into his magic act and in the process brought some olfactory joy to his assistant and spectators. His selection for the Aftel award at the 2023 Art and Olfaction awards is quite impressive. La Tacita de Cafe with its coffee, caramel and rum trifecta sounds yummy. I also liked CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery. MD, USA.

  • What an amazing and unique entrance to creating perfumes. I’m amazed to see the combination between fragrances and magic, while also surprised that it isn’t more widely used in mainstream magic tricks. Will keep an eye out for what and how Day Three Fragrances develop and grow. USA, TX.

  • AromaDulce73 says:

What a great story. Like myself he seems to be a man of faith and was able to have the faith to pivot from performing magic to making magical scents. I would love to get my nose on anything he has created.

    Los Angeles, California

  • What a life changer! from tricks to scents, but as he state “a good perfume is truly magical” . His story of the paper flower trick is delightful. You have to thank your daughter for pushing you out of your comfort zone (always better than thanking Covid ).A lot of courage (like many independent perfumers) means creating a brand from nothing in a competitive and even saturated market and getting to be Finalist in the 2023 Art and Olfaction Awards is remarkable! Felicidades! I lived in Cuba for a while so I have a vidid image of the smell that La Tacita De Cafe brings to life! Love to try this dark amber opulent gourmand scent! I live in Spain, EU.

  • This is Fascinating!!! What a Life!

Such an inspiring story and found it really special how he was able to implement his love of fragrance into facets of his life with his magician work.
I love how he bonded those two artistic worlds together.
    Beautiful.

  • Uncle1979 says:

Impressive career for his age, reading Michael Paul himself telling us how he started, and what he went through to get where he’s at right now, was so satisfying. Magical journey with perfume ending

“Why do you have to compete?” she said. “I mean, what if someone really liked this perfume and just wanted to buy a bottle? It is art, not competition, right?” And with that suggestion from my teenager, my fragrance house, Day Three Fragrances was born.”

In a similar my bakery was born, and now we’re happily thriving with a lot of art, and healthy competition.
Because of La Tacita De Cafe notes , making and eating Orange Caramel Mousse, drizzled with Rum is what came to mind, I just can’t help, but to relate all fragrances to some sort of food.
Like Michael Paul I’m experimenting a lot at the bakery, certainly a melting pot and never-ending journey for both of us
Appreciate everything i read, and the giveaway campaign

  • What an interesting journey, from magician to perfumer. I enjoyed hearing about his daughter encouraging him to pursue it! Very heartwarming.
From Canada, thank you for the draw!

  • Michael had such a fascinating fragrant journey. Starting from “real” magic, he then went on to creating fragrant magic and then the magic happened to him, awarding his very first efforts with a magnificent recognition.
It’s also obvious from his works, how passionate he is about this new journey, and how exciting he will make it. The fact he believes in what they do and has a core concept about what he wants to achieve, I am sure, will pave his way to success.
Both the name and the notes of La Tacita de Cafe sound beautiful.
I write from Europe and I have liked the Cafleurebon in American Perfumery FB page.

  • I had no idea that Michael Paul started as a magician, or that the house was so new and won the Art and Olfaction Award so soon after opening. It really speaks to his natural skills as a perfumer. I would love a chance to try his creations! I’m
    In MN, USA.

  • roxhas1cat says:

Absolutely interesting article. Loved reading this life story and how from the depths of covid lockdown came new art and magic. Dakota is quite wise with her advice on competition. Those notes sound amazing and I’m not sure the difference with Dominican coffee, but I’m sure it adds to the magic. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • To have only just released this fragrance and a mere few months later winning the 2023 Art and Olfaction Awards for best handmade perfumes is quite an achievement! Based on the list of notes, I can easily see why it won. It has such a complex blend of notes. I am particularly fond of that opening of orange and spices. That is always such a great blend when combining with gourmand notes. And I like his take on picking a favorite American artist is a lot like picking a favorite food. It is the same for me; so dependent on my mood so it is nearly impossible to choose a favorite.
    I live in the USA.

  • IvanVelikov says:

When I think of self-made people, I usually think of a quote from the great Coco Chanel:
“Fashion has 2 purposes, comfort and love.Beauty comes when fashion succeeds”
The same could be applied to fragrances, particularly Day Three Fragrances
and Michael Paul . I like how he stayed in his adventurous lane, from magician to perfumer, and never looked back .
I particularly like the conversation with his daughter
“It is art, not competition, right?”
Michael is making bespoke fragrances, and i make bespoke suits
D.J. Jazzy Jeff i like too.
Thank you Michael Paul , and Cafleurebon

From a magician to an award winning perfumer. Truly an American story. And the more I think about it, perfumers do truly create magic. They can transform a dark day to one that is sparkling and bright. I love Dakota’s words of wisdom that inspired the start of Day Three Fragrances. La Tacita de Cafe sounds delicious. I love anything with orange and coffee.
    I live in the USA.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’d love to try “La Tacita De Cafe”: I like its list of notes. I like Prada “Amber Pour Homme (in fact, I stocked up on it when I heard it was discontinued), so Michael and I have similar taste. I think that it’s interesting that Michael’s daughter insisted that he sell his fragrance creations. Also, I think it’s interesting that “La Tacita De Cafe” won the Aftel Award. I live in the U.S.A.

  • petergigov says:

This is such an interesting story. I like how Michael Paul discovered he wanted not just to make, but to sell fragrances. He seems so enthusiastic about what he does and I bet his fragrances are awesome.
I am so curious about La Tacita De Cafe scent , artisanal fragrance with coffee, spices and orange.
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • These profiles are always full of surprises, but I certainly didn’t expect one to start off saying “my transition from full time professional magician.” Michael Paul’s performing career is impressive (terrific photos!) and the way in which he brought smell and fragrance into his act, like the paper flower, is a really interesting and unique segue into perfumery. This quote stood out: “Like magicians, perfumers create special moments for their audience that cause them to think, feel, and be moved by the illusions created by a sort of (olfactive) sleight of hand. And like magic, perfume can spark intrigue, or transport the wearer to a different time and place. A good perfume is truly magical.” Excellent profile.

I like how Michael Paul took his time to perfect his life, and fragrances while at the same time not being afraid of the obstacles, and the stiff competition. It shows his level of dedication and self-expectation .
Also as liquor lover I believe realistically smelling boozy fragrances, even notes are hard to find . La Tacita De Cafe is one of Michael Paul very first public releases i believe, and when in saw “rum” i immediately thought… courageous move.
I’ll treat myself with the famous Cuban El Cafecita Cocktail made of rum, coffee, sugar cane and orange zest , so La Tacita De Cafe isn’t it?
Cheers and thank you for the opportunity

  • What a truly fascinating story of a magician turned perfumer! Being inspired by his daughter Dakota to sell his art and thus Day Three Fragrance was born. Michael’s path to an award winning perfumer is magical as “Life is like a box of Perfume.” Thanks for the giveaway. Greetings from the USA.

  • Coming from entrepreneurial family, from a magician to perfumer,I’m happy Michael Paul found his happy place
His own story transported me from his early days, to “What’s next for Day Three Fragrances?” My response is simple. I’m just going to stay focused on creating magic.”
Michael desire to connect with his customers, not being too competitive and grow as perfumer all do show praiseworthy dedication.
I do believe La Tacita De Cafe is a stylish fragrance with some seductive properties , a treat I’d love to win
    Thanks for the draw

    Greetings everyone
First I’d like to thank Mr Paul for allowing European readers to enter, i rarely go back last years, and American Perfumery essays i only read. I guess Mr Paul either has points of sale in Europe ,or he’s willing to ship the fragrance internationally, if I’m not mistaken something no other American indie brand owner was willing to do, thank you.
I like the show stories, and how he used perfumes for more personal interaction with the entrees. Perfumes or illusions, some music and the honest advice from his daughter, nice experience i had today reading the essay.
Thank you, American living in Paris France

  • WaltherP99 says:

American perfumery is on the rise for the last 5-10 years. You don’t necessarily need to be a ISIPCA graduate, trained by Alberto Morillas or Carlos Benaim to create magic, and Michael Paul specializes in both magic and perfumery 🙂
Performance on both stages, commitment, and the boozy gourmand called La Tacita De Cafe are quite tempting.
Just followed the brand on Instagram, @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

  • I know I missed the drawing, but I had to comment anyway. I adore how the path to perfumes is so wildly disparate between individuals. The story of stage magic to scent magic is wonderful and vivid, and truly illustrates how we each get here on our own path, but are still sharing the wider road. Wonderful!

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the nice writeup. It was so cool to read about Michael’s Path because I do remember his audition for America’s got talent. I love how his career has been steered into performaning olfactive sleights or sleights of the nose. It certainly is true about perfumery (in a way that I can understand) that the way to success is through making multiple trials of things that don’t smell great.

I would love to smell this fragrance and perhaps will pick up a sampler pack.

    Cheers from WI, USA
