Editor Valerie Lee Vitale was flipping through a recent issue of Vogue when an image caught her eye. Model Leilani Bishop with her son. Valerie met Leilani Bishop and was captivated by the simple "haiku" of her fragrances at Elements Showcase last August, which she reviewed for CaFleureBon but somehow I missed Leilani.  Yet, Leilani and I have our own story, that has nothing to do with perfume, one from the life I led in the early 90s'. I was at a photo shoot for a fashion footwear ad with Photographer David Lachapelle. I remember asking Leilani about her unusal name, which is Hawaiian for "Flowers from Heaven". I have met many models, but Leilani Bishop stayed with me all these years.

When we met, Leilani was at the beginning of her  modeling career. She  has appeared in many ads( including Tommy Girl Perfume), fashion and beauty editorials, on the cover of magazines such as Allure, Self and Vogue,  in music videos and on the famous cover of The Hole's 1994 album Live through This. Leilani Bishop walked down the runway along with superstar models Eva Herzigova, Adriana Lima, Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum and Giselle Budchen in 1999 for Victoria's Secrets.  Today,  (20 years later) she is a model, a mother, an avid yogini, a philanthropist and a perfumer. Life has come full circle and I am proud to present Leilani at the beginning of her scented journey (her line of fragrance oils debuted in 2012)  in our American Perfumer series.-Michelyn Camen, Editor in Chief

leilani bishop profiles in american perfumery

Leilani Bishop of Leilani Bishop Fragrance

Profile: I was born on the island of Maui in Hawaii in the mid 70’s to parents who were living a Hippie lifestyle. I grew up in the Islands with a short stint on the Mainland  (Continental US) from ages 4-9. Upon moving back to the Islands we moved to Kauai also know as as the ‘Garden Island”, where I lived until I left to live on another Island of a slightly different nature….Manhattan.

Young Leilani Bishop at 8 years old-Her name means Flowers from Heaven in Hawaiian

Growing up in Hawaii, I was surrounded by intoxicating smells whether it was the smell of salt spray coming off the ocean during the winter season or the fragrance of rotting guava and passion fruit mixed with flowers and rich mud on the trails I love to hike. Still to this day when I get off the plane in Hawaii the smells of the aina (land) sooth me and cradle me like a lullaby.

Leilani Bishop's Hawaii moments: Pikake is known as Hawaiian Jasmine

Which is why I suppose when I left to live in Manhattan and started traveling the world as a Fashion Model, what intrigued me most about the intense juxtapose of the locations I went to was the differences in the smells of the lands, foliage, cities and people. I naturally gravitated towards the smells of nature in these locations more then the man made smells. I love how the right smell in a foreign land can make you feel immediately connected and inspired, as well as fill you with love for your surroundings. I created my Orange Blossom oil to commemorate my travels to Africa and to the Mediterranean, my lilac fragrance to remind me of my modeling days in the Hamptons and of course Pikake for my native Hawaii. I have always wanted to create my own business and Brand. I am able to use that money to suport worthwhile causes and charities, especially for women, as well as allow me a world that gets to play and work creatively with others that I admire.

American Perfumery: America is known for producing innovators and that aspect shows up in American Perfumery. I think with out that innovation it would be very hard for brands such as myself to grow and thrive like we have been able to. I love the history and infrastructure of the perfume legends and draw inspiration from them, but I personally resonate more with the niche indie brands. I think that American perfumers have a special romance with the process that reminds me of teenage love and all the excitement that that encompasses, as a whole they are eager to discuss fragrance and new ways to approach it. It is a very supportive community here in America.

American Artists: I am huge fan of Zac Posen as a designer and an artist, his attention to detail and his need to create a work of art with each piece is awe inspiring. Not to mention that any woman can put on one of his pieces and feel sexier then she has ever felt. He is constantly referencing time periods where dressing for an occasion was a celebration in fabrics and folds, with the right buttons and accents. I am truly a fan and thrilled to wear his pieces from time to time.

  • Over the years I have seen Leilani’s face in many magazines and always felt she had a beautiful, almost wholesome look. Nice to hear that she is living a beautiful and creative life.
I think all her fragrances sound delicious, so I’d like the sample set.

    Thanks!

  • Loved this sentence: “Still to this day when I get off the plane in Hawaii the smells of the aina (land) sooth me and cradle me like a lullaby.” How things are verbalized express the intent of passion so clearly… The circle of life is there and how fortunate to always be aware.. I am in the US and the sample set sounds intoxicating… Thanks.

  • What a great article and what a great perfumer. I have always wanted to be a perfumer after enough trips (it started with just 1 trip) and I smelled the fragrance of flowers as we drove around the big island.. lyrical, magical and mystical to snorkel and see creatures of the sea– and smell the salt of the ocean and drive away and smell gorgeous fragrant flowers. Her story brings it all back to me.. whether Big Island or Kauui or Maui.. each has it’s own fragrance story.
I would love Pikake or Orange Blossom. They all sound blissful

  • What a lovely woman! Her face is unforgettable to me from that Hole album!!! Her transition from flower child of sorts on Hawaii to Manhattanite, model and world traveler fascinates me; I’d love to know more about any culture shock she may have felt, how she adapted. I also appreciate her obvious pride in American innovation, the freedom of creativity she feels.

I live in the US, and I would love the 10 ml lilac oil. Thank you for the giveaway and lovely profile!

  • I was captivated by Leilani’s journey from keiki o ka ‘aina (child of the land) on Maui to international model/traveler to perfumer–especially the transition from a world of visual artistry to one of olfaction. Fascinating!

I live in the US, and would love to try all three fragrances, so I choose the sample set! Mahalo a nui loa!

  • She is lovely, and she looks perfectly at home in the lush Hawaiian landscape. I love how her story ties into her perfume development, I am in the US and I would love to try all three of the fragrances in the sample set, thanks!

  • What an awesome article. I have such a Love for Hawaii and know those smells of the aina, just incredible.
Would love to try Pikake, I live in the U.S. Thanks for the draw.

  • I’ve been curious about these, and the packaging in the colored vials is beautiful. I am in the US and I would close pikake.

  • Fazal Cheema says:

wow, what a journey from being a model for a fragrance to perfumer..when i first opened this page, i thought tommy girl has been selected by Cafleurebon for classic archive…my choice will be Pikake 10ml. i am in usa

  • Such a glamourous life yet Leilani Bishop seems very grounded by her early experiences with fragrance! I would love to small all three of her scents in the sample set. I live in the US. Thank you!

  • I definitely was surprised to know that she’s the face on the cover of that Hole album! She seems very down to earth despite her flamboyant life as a model, and also quite close to nature. I envy her for growing up in Hawaii…
    I am in the EU.

  • First of all I’m a lover of Frangipani and Hawaii is a dream destination I want to visist once.
I like about Leilani that she created the scents to accompany her on her travels and to bring her the memory of places and the emotions connected to it.
I’m in germany so I’d love to sample her scents.

  • Carole Fallon says:

I (Blushing) don’t usually think of models as innovators and artists, but I am truly impressed with Leilani Bishop’s story and would love to try her Lilac oil; lilac is so evocative a scent.

  • I didn’t know she was from Maui, no wonder she developed her fascination for fragrances! When I first visited Maui, I was enveloped by the air filled with the scent of flowers as soon as I walked out of the airport. I empathize with her feeling of connection to the places through scents… Smell is one of the greatest reminder for the memories & love for the places…
    I’m living in the E.U.

  • It was interesting to see her as the model for the Hole album cover. It brings home the point that we rarely think of models as real people with dreams and ambitions– they are merely pretty avatars in our society. I love that Leilani is forging her own path and would love to try her fragrances! I’m in the US and Pikake would be my choice.

  • I’m struck by her enjoyment of her life experiences, what a gift! Her upbringing in beautiful Hawaii is interesting, too. I visited Hawaii as a child in the 60s and Kauai was my favorite island – I like Leilani’s description of flowers, fruit and mud, what wonderful scent memories! I’m in the US and would love to have a decant of Pikake, thanks for the opportunity.

  • What I found fascinating is her name Leilani (flowers from heaven) and how her life is affected by it.
She is a reincarnated “heavenly flower” on earth in the form of a very beautiful woman, not only beautiful in the exterior but also in her interior since she is a true philanthropist helping the less fortunate women through her work with charities.
I think that Leilani is heaven and beauty on earth in everything that she undertakes and I wish her good luck with her new venture.
I thank you for this draw. I live in Greece.

  • Forgot to mention my choice of fragrance which is Pikake because I love exotic “hawaian” smells.

  • It was interesting to read about the olfactory influences of Leilani, including the not so savory ones like rotting fruit…sometimes these are more evocative of place than the sterilised ones we are used to.
I would love to try Pikake, and I am in Australia.

  • The Live Through This cover is instantly recognizable. It’s weird to connect that face with perfumery.
I’d like to try the sample set,
    I’m an international reader ty

  • Beautiful name, Leilani, flowers from heaven. The blends of different organic materials is amazing, Pikake would be my choice. I am in the US. Thanks.

  • Born to hippies on Hawaii in the 70s, how great is that?
I am choosing the Orange Blossom. In the US. TY.

  • Courtney Warren says:

The fact that she naturally will gravitate towards the smells of nature more then the man made smells has me intrigued and curios what all three fragrances smell like. If she truly can create fragrance that is as amazing as her story, I would love to try all three!
    I am in the US.
    Thanks for the draw!

  • I always wondered who that was on the cover of Hole’s Live Through This! Now I know it was Leilani. How cool! I’d really like to try the 10 ml of Lilac. I’m in the US. Thank you for the profile!

  • I love how she always wanted to create her business like this and now she’s doing it. It’s great seeing people achieve their dreams. The sample set would be my choice, but they all sound lovely. I’m in the US.

  • Beautiful name!! I envy her Hawaiian upbringing and he hippie lifestyle! I really want to visit the islands, it is one of my life dreams!! I am so intrigued to try them all!! I live in the UK

  • The smells of a hippie childhood in Hawaii sound incredible! I would choose 10 ml of Orange Blossom, and I live in the US. Thanks.

  • I can totally feel the hawaiian influences that Leilani speaks of, such unique islands with their energy that they endow something very special to those that live there and listen…I very much like that she talks of giving back, supporting women’s causes, social entrepreneurship at its best. I’d choose Pikake, take me back to the island…Thanks for a lovely review

  • Wow. Sounds like she has led a charmed life (although I am sure she has worked very hard). She certainly is beautiful and what fun it must be to have the resources that she has. I love that she has created scents based on her travels. I agree that the scent of a place can make one feel connected. I am in the US and would love to have the sampler. Thanks.

  • Reading this really makes me want to go to Hawaii someday. I appreciate her passion and philanthropy and would love to smell all her scents with the sample set. Thanks for the chance and I’m in the U.S.

  • I like how she ties her scent experiences from her travels and childhood into her livelihood. I’m in the US and I’d enjoy the pikake 10 ml. I have already liked the Profiles page!

  • It s great Leilani can pull from her years of modeling all over the world into a brand that reflects her. Im in the US and i would love to try the Pikake 10 ml. i already liked the profiles page.

  • I think it’s fascinating that she used her travels for inspiration and has a scents connected to locations.
I am in the US and I would love the Orange Blossom perfume. I liked Cafleurebon Profiles.

  • Growing up in Hawaii blonde, that had to be fascinating.
I’m leaning towards the Pikake as I have no idea what that word means. 🙂 isa

  • What I found intriguing about Leilani is that she incorporates the smells of her childhood into her work! I would love to smell the Lilac. I am from the U.S.

  • What I found most interesting is the idea that Leilani really notices the smells of the land, foliage and all else wherever she goes, all due to her growing up in a part of the world where there are wonderful flower and plant smells. I am is the US. If a winner, I would choose Pikake.

  • Maryanne Collins says:

I recognize Leilani from so many magazines
Had no idea she was a perfumer
    Love the bottles
I thought it was really amazing that she met Ms Camen when she was just starting
I would love the sample set or pikake

  • I, too, recognize Leilani from many ads and the Hole album cover. I also had no idea she was a Victoria’s Secret model!
I can’t chose which fragrance I would want to try because they all sound wonderful, so I am going to go with the sampler!
    I am in the US.

  • I loved her sense of being present where ever she might travel to, noting the scents and sights of a place. What a perfectly lovely person. I would like to try the sampler set and am in the US.

  • I loved hearing the long journey she had to get where she is right now. Also didn’t know what the meaning of her name was. Very pretty!

I’ll choose the sample set. I’m in Canada.
