ÇaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery: Elizabeth Gaynes of strangelove + fallintostars Draw

Elizabeth Gaynes of strangelove perfumes

Elizabeth Gaynes of strangelove in Cannes 2019

Profile: I was born in Los Angeles, grew up in Vancouver, and have lived in New York City for the last eleven years. I started my career working with startups all over the world, helping them raise funds and find their way to market. I’ve always appreciated the idea of handcrafted, beautiful quality products over mass production, which is one of the reasons why I lived in Italy for three years prior to moving to New York. I just love the idea that there were towns that only made wedding dresses, ceramics, or shoes for the gondoliers in Venice. Every family in these towns were part of a specialized industry, taking great pride in their work and producing some of the highest quality products in the world. Today, that respect for quality is still found throughout the country.

 sustainable perfumes

Borneo Field

Around the time that I moved from Rome to New York in 2008, a friend of mine from a prominent Bornean family asked me to help her with business development and marketing for sustainable farming. Her family owned agarwood plantations in Borneo that were producing sustainable oud. I was already intrigued, but as I began learning more about oud, I discovered that it has long been rumored to be an aphrodisiac. How could I not dive in to this adventure?

I worked with them for three years, during which time a few of the major fragrance houses were vying to do business with us. Their customers were asking for transparency and sustainability, and at the time, not many suppliers could provide this. Eventually we ended up doing a deal with Givaudan where we created a 600 acre patchouli plantation and a vetiver plantation. This three year journey was my introduction to ingredients for fragrances. Throughout this process, I went from plantations in Borneo to boardrooms in Geneva talking to perfumers, marketers, and executives. I was absorbing so much information and wanted to learn more.

While I was going back and forth from Borneo, a close friend of mine, Helena Christensen, would come over with her little boy—my son’s best friend—and she fell in love with oud, just as I had. After we completed our deal with Givaudan, I decided that I wanted to start a perfume house that was purely about the quality of the perfume, using oud and other rare and unusual ingredients. When I told Helena about my plan to start a fragrance house, she asked to be a part of it and signed on as Creative Director. I was thrilled!

Elizabeth Gaynes of stranglove in Knightsbridge in 2014 to launch deadofnight at Harrods

Elizabeth Gaynes of strangelove walking in London

We launched strangelove in 2014 at Harrods’ Salon de Parfums with one pure perfume oil called deadofnight. This was an incredible way for our brand to start out and gain name recognition, especially considering that we had just one product to sell.

We grew quickly as our customers found us. Since then, we have added four more oud-based scents to our collection:  Strangelove meltmyheart, silencethesea, lostinflowers, and most recently, fallintostars, which we just launched this fall. All five of our scents combine two types of sustainable oud with other unusual ingredients like ambergris, orris butter, red champaca, gardenia enfleurage, jonquil nectar, sandalwood, and Peruvian balsam.

Sourcing these special ingredients outside of the purview of major fragrance houses has been a wonderful, rewarding adventure—it feels like finding secret treasures. I will never stop searching for the jewels that make our perfumes so different and special. The high quality of our ingredients is what we believe defines strangelove as authentic luxury.

Elizabeth Gaynes, Helena Christensen and Christophe Laudamiel in the Lab

On a related note, I also like to push the limitations of the average perfume buyer towards something a little more daring. It’s exciting to see people try something that doesn’t smell like anything else they’ve ever tried. Whether people love our perfumes or hate them, you can’t not have a reaction to them. Christophe Laudamiel, our “rockstar master perfumer,” is so creative, dedicated to his craft, and passionate about the industry. Helena, our creative director, works closely with me and Christophe in the lab, in addition to working on brand development and outreach.

Helena, Christophe and I do not rest until we finally reach a scent that we’re all thrilled with, even if it takes a whole year to get there.  Strangelove fallintostars actually ended up taking that long, but we couldn’t be more thrilled with the final result!  We know that not everyone will gravitate to our perfumes…and we’re OK with that. It takes time, education, and a desire to stand out and feel, well…super sexy.

On running an American perfume house: Growing up, and even well into my career, I never thought I would run a perfume company. But as I gradually discovered my passion for perfume, I had to keep following it. Running a niche perfume house in America—and in New York City, for that matter—is a very unusual and challenging thing. There are very few fragrance houses in America; most are based outside the US. There are really only a handful of true niche perfume houses based in the US, compared to hundreds in Europe.

strangelove is a niche brand, so naturally, we are competing with a lot of larger companies with bigger budgets and larger staff. We constantly work to figure out the best ways to provide a top quality product to our customers while remaining within our budget. Doing that amidst the chaos of New York City sometimes makes our job even more challenging—but it also makes it more adventurous and fun!

Great NYC artists

Jean-Michel Basquiet via Wikipedia

Favorite American artist: Jean-Michel Basquiat was not only a born and bred New Yorker, but a visionary who pushed the limits of what art could be and what the mainstream art world would accept. He was highly socially conscious and never shied away from exploring political and social issues in a cutting, dramatic way. I find his use of color and incorporation of graffiti and other street art into his work to be striking and visionary. Even over thirty years later, his work holds up remarkably well today; it is timeless and never feels dated.

  • I loved reading this, it’s the first time I’ve heard the history of Strangelove NYC. I really like Elizabeth’s vision of bringing real, old world quality to a modern US perfumery, I think they’ve achieved this brilliantly. I adore Lost in Flowers and Dead of Night and would love to win Fall Into Stars. Thank you so much for this draw! I live in the US and have ‘liked’ the FB page 🙂

  • I liked reading about Elizabeth’s interests in fragrance, sustainability, and her entrepreneurial spirit. I have not had a chance to try any of the fragrances. I would like to enter the drawing for the sampler kit. I live in the United states. Thank you.

  • It’s interesting that Elizabeth’s working with startups eventually led to her creating her own and that living in Italy deepened her love of handmade, quality products. I would be happy to win strangelove fallintostars.USA.

  • I loved reading about Elizabeth’s courage in starting a niche perfumery under such competitive conditions. I also like that her creation is focused on oud, though presenting different facets of it.
I am from the EU and would love the sample set, because I have never tried anything by this house before. I have liked the fb page already (Elmas MT). Thank you!

  • I have the utmost respect for people who take a lot of pride in what they do and dedicate their lives to perfect their crafts. Accordingly, Elizabeth’s strangelove line of fragrances sound very appealing to me, especially given the focus on sustainable farming and use of unusual ingredients. “Authentic luxury” sounds fabulous. Thanks for the generous draw. Would love to win the 15 ml of fallintostars. Regards from Boston USA.

  • I was lucky to be at an Osmotheque conference a few weeks ago with Christophe Laudamiel as speaker. He showed us the final version of FallIntoStars and one version without the daffodil in it. It was a brilliant way to show how an ingredient plays an essential role in the whole scent. I love CL and his creations. I’d love to be able to have one of the strangelove perfumes. They sound amazing and innovative.
Thank you for the draw! I’d love to win the 15ml of FallIntoStars. I live in EU.

  • I love the sensibilities of this niche American perfume house…the idea of aiming for perfection or at the very least, excellence in any endeavor really appeals to me and I would very much like to experience their idea of excellence in perfumery. I also would like to experience, compare and contrast several Oudh perfumes in addition to the other rare ingredients they include and so the sampler is my choice if I were so lucky to win. I am in the US and I thank you all for the chance!

  • Elizabeth T. says:

“We know that not everyone will gravitate to our perfumes…and we’re OK with that.” I love this. This is why people who truly love perfume support niche perfume houses. Thank you!!!! Loved reading about yours. 🙂 They all sound too wonderful to choose just one. I’d have to go with the sampler. Thanks for sharing a little about yourself with us! I’m in the USA.

  • I loved part about Elizabeth making perfumes more daring and different from anything else. I have not explored this house but if Iam successful I would love 15ml of fall fallintostars. Cheers from UK

  • I loved that her love of oud inspired Elizabeth to start up a new fragrance house. If I am lucky to win I would love the discovery set. Thanks from UK

  • This house is a true passion pronext that combines enthusiasm with no compromise components. It doesn’t have the big tired marketing algorithms that plague some of the behemoth mass marketers, which has resulted in safe fragrances, lazy flankers and once excited, now bored, perfume lovers. A polarizing fragrance is an interesting fragrance! I haven’t tried strangelove, but would love the discovery kit to smell the journey. I live in the USA.

  • I liked that Elizabeth found her way to perfume after doing other business and learned so much about the sourcing of ingredients and the business prior to launching Strangelove NYC. I also liked that her favorite American artist is Jean-Michel Basquiat as I enjoy his work as well. I have not yet had the good fortune to try any perfumes from Strangelove NYC. Should I win I would choose the 15ml bottle of fallintostars and I live in the U.S. I did like Cafleurebon Profiles in American Perfumery on Facebook as well. Thanks for the generous draw.

  • Sounds fascinating. What an incredible career. I’d love to sample this house so I guess I would like the Discovery Set.I really enjoyed the review and thank you for the draw. I’m in the USA

  • If you have a passion or a dream, follow it. What this woman has been able to do in so many different career fields is so inspiring and praiseworthy, so I know that she will do the fragrance industry justice. I am interested in the discovery kit. (USA)

  • Elizabeth learned about ingredients for three years with Givaudan before starting the brand. I was aware of the brand background before including Laudamiel being the sole perfumer for all perfumes. My choice is the discovery set. USA

  • That’s quite an interesting path to perfumery! I’ve recently rediscovered oud and gotten smitten hence would like to sample all the fragrances from this house. I’ve already liked CaFleurebon Profiles in American Perfumery on Facebook and would choose the discovery set. I’m in USA

Very interesting to read about Elizabeth’s love for perfume and the story behind her own brand. I didn’t have the chance to smell any of the perfumes before. If I were to win, I would chose the bottle of fallingintostars. I’m in the EU

  • I was thrilled to read about Elizabeth’s decision to start a fragrant journey with no compromise from quality and pureness of ingredients. Quality, not quantity is what matters the most. I am also interested about the rare materials used in these perfumes. I would like to win the 15 ml bottle from the EU. Thank you.

  • It’s always fascinating to hear how others got into the hobby we all share, the different ways we all got to where we are can vary so much but also we can see parallels with our own journey.

I’d chose the 15 ml of falling into the stars.

    From Ireland, EU.

  • I really admire the people who create a project from a passion, the gesture is courageous, in fact your perfumes are not for everyone, better this way, but I am sure that I would like them very much.
    Linda – UE

  • I have yet to discover this house, that’s why I’d love to win the kit! I like the relaxed tone in your words where I’m sure there were challenging and hectic times. Thanks for the draw (Germany)!

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Thanks for the article & great profile to read. The name of the brand and perfumes are quite interesting and eye-catching. Love the natural perfume art & work in a limited budget. I never heard before of the perfume brand and would love to win the 15 ml of Fallintostars.
Thanks for the generosity & draw, count me in, please.

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

It’s lovely that the two friends have made a successful venture together, and that instead of too many cooks spoiling the product, they work long in harmony until each participant is thrilled with the final version, no matter how long it takes. I am aware of this house but have not yet had an opportunity to sample their fragrances. I think meltmyheart interests me most, but I would love to win the sampler to give them all a go. I have long been a like/follower of your Profile page. CONUS.

  • Great article. I love that she is working with a close friend and seems to have a great outlook on customer service. I also like that she recognizes that her perfunes might not be for everyone I think that shows class. I have liked the Facebook page and would like to win the 15ml fallintostars bottle. Thanks as always for the giveaway. In the USA.

  • I haven’t had the chance to try any of these fragrances yet, but I have been drawn to them for quite a while. I found Elizabeth Gaynes’ story quite compelling and the fragrances’ names original. I would love to win the 15 ml bottle of fallintostars. I am in the USA.

  • I relate to Elizabeth’s journey both in her geographical exploration as well as her scent aesthetic – the curiosity to try new things and not shying away from being “out of your element” in a place or with a strange fragrance. I also love OUD and it’s interesting to know specifically where the oud in a fragrance comes from! Pick me! I’m in the US.

  • I’m happy to see a perfumer with an obvious commitment to quality. I love the strangelove moniker and the classic design of the bottles. I’m an oud aficionado and am excited to try these. I would love to win a bottle of fallintostars. Thank you! I’m in the US.

  • I respect and quite honestly envy Elizabeth Gaines’ life journey.
I wish I had the courage to follow my dreams. I haven’t tried any Strangelove perfumes and would love to win the 15 ml of fallintostars.
Chrisophe Leudamiel’s creation that I wear is Youth Dew Amber Nude.
    I live in USA.

  • I would love to visit Borneo! I enjoyed learning the history of the house, it’s stories like these that make me want to start my own. I have not tried any strangelove fragrance yet. From Canada and would enjoy either prize.

  • fleurdetilleul says:

She didn’t choose perfumery, perfumery chose her! This is the best start for a career! 😀 I’m not familiar with strangelove (lovely name), therefore I’d love the discovery set, thank you! I live in EU.

  • I appreciated her grassroots approach- she found a love for oud. Then she garnered 100s of acres of vetiver and patchouli. She started talking to industry insiders, and onward. Clear focus, not in a rush/quality-oriented. I’ve never tried any strangelove fragrances, and therefore would like the Discovery set. I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Loved reading about your journey and process. I love oud and fallintostars sounds beautiful. I loved hearing about your method for sourcing ingredients. It must be such a thrill to discover something unique and knowing how it will set your fragrances apart! Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • What I love about her story is she started with just one single perfume. This should encourage everyone who has a dream to go for it and start simple. I’d like the 15ml FallintoStars. Cheers!

  • Awesome article and backstory! I really enjoyed reading about Elizabeth’s journey into perfumery and getting Helena Christensen to become her Creative Director! I love the names of the various fragrances and that they are oud based and other unusual ingredients. I would love the discovery set and I have liked the Facebook page. Thanks for the draw and I live in the US!

  • I love the journey through oud!!!! That’s fabulous. Thank god for that friend who asked for help and changed your life. I never heard of this house and am excited. I love oud fragrances and rosewood and would be happy with either gift but think I would rather do a discover to try more.I’m in USA.

  • wallygator88 says:

I really enjoyed reading about Elizabeth’s journey from the fringes of the perfume world into it’s very center. It gives me the hope that I might chance on such a journey!

Haven’t had the chance to smell this house before, bur fallintostars would be my top bet.

I would definitely like to do the discovery set.

    Location – Madison, WI, USA!

  • I love that sentence about what customers crave is transparency about a product’s origins. Yes, quality of scent is important, but so is knowing an ingredient has been harvested ethically. I would choose fallintostars, which really intrigues me with it’s jonquil. I also liked profiles in American perfumery on Fb for an extra entry -usa

  • It’s amazing how things happen in life and we discover our true passion and interest. From helping a friend to discovering her interest in our and finally starting a perfume house. That’s quite interesting to read.
    I would choose the 15ml.
    I live in USA.

  • I enjoyed reading that Elizabeth’s passion for a sustainable oud was a major part of her path in this niche perfumery house, that’s a positive and admirable core value to have for a cosmetic or perfume business. I liked CaFleurebon Profiles in American Perfumery on Facebook. I will be ordering some samples for sure! If I won, my wish would be for the 15ml bottle of Fallintostars. It sounds enchanting and beautifully composed. Canada.

  • I find that intriguing that they use 2 types of sustainable oud in each of the scents in the collection. For that reason, I’d definitely choose the discovery set if I win!
    I live in the USA.

  • I don’t know any strangelove perfumes yet, but I loved to read how important the quality and uniqueness of the final product os for Elizabeth.
I would choose the discovery set.

    Living in Germany, EU

  • I love that there are still people that are focused on quality. I focus more on “less is more”. I’d love to win Fall Into Stars, it must be amazing since it took so long to create. Love to read about creative perfumery! USA.

  • A fragrance house that first started at a farm. From seed to bottle. I’d like to experience all these scents so to wi the discovery set would be awesome!

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved learning about Elizabeth’s path to perfumery. I don’t have a favorite strangelove perfume because I haven’t tried anything from this house. I like the concept of not smelling like anyone else and having a unique scent character with notes such as Joquil Nectar, Oud, and Amber. I am from the USA. If I win I choose the 15 ml of fallintostars.

  • I also love towns that specialize in eclectic items! I love going out for ice cream at the world’s largest cookie jar collection store/ice cream parlor and savoring the bizarreness of a person’s livelihood being dedicated to something as unassuming as cookie jars. Oud is a decidedly higher-stakes business front, but just as fascinating! After my first encounter with oud, I had that jaw-dropping moment of “My word, what is this elixir?” immediately followed by “How is it made?” and was shocked to hear how rare the trees that make it have become. It is reassuring to know the fragrant tradition of oud will sustainably continue on for generations to come because of you + your friend’s efforts 🙂
I would choose the 15ml as my very first strangelove fragrance.
    USA

  • “We know that not everyone will gravitate to our perfumes…and we’re OK with that”: This ethos and Ms. Gaynes biography resonate with me. I adore oud, and the Basquiat affinities are icing. I would love to try fallintostars. I’m in the US.

  • I love hearing about how other people came to fall in love with the world of perfume. What a special journey! I love that her relationships with her friends are what spurred her to dive into fragrance ingredients and create her own company.
I have not tried any of the brand’s fragrances, but they sound like a luxury I need in my life. I would love to win the discovery set.
    I’m in Canada.

  • falling in love with oud—that could make anyone start a fragrance house. i would chose the discovery set especially with those names…dreamin in calfornia
