ÇaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery: Beth Nonte Russell of House of Potentia + Independence Day Draw

Beth Nonte Russell of House of Potentia

Profile: I was born into a large Catholic family and raised in a small town in Southern Indiana. From an early age, I was an insatiable reader, passionate about books, mainly because they transported me anywhere in the world that I wanted to go.  All of my books came from the public library. I had such a strong connection to the physical object of the book, and I would choose based on what the book cover looked like, the heft of the book, the feel of the paper and maybe most importantly, the smell of the pages as I riffled them between my fingers.

If I didn’t like the way the pages smelled I would not choose the book; because a habit of mine was to rhythmically thumb the pages as I read, releasing the scent of the paper up to my nose.  I liked older books best, they had a more complex smell than the newer books with fresh paper.  So the scent of books was the first fragrance I fell in love with.

Hooks Drug Store circa 1974

Around age 12, I started going to the only local place in town that sold fragrances: Hook’s Drug Store. Perfumes and colognes were tucked away in a corner of the store and I would park myself there for hours, smelling everything they had, which at the time included things like “Love’s Baby Soft”, “White Shoulders”, and “Jovan Musk”. I craved adventure and romance, travel and excitement…and through my exploration of fragrance, and books, I could get a taste of those things.

My life took me in many directions in adulthood, but my love of books and perfume endured. I worked in politics, and later earned my masters degree in psychology and began working as a therapist.  In my late thirties, I had a life-changing experience which brought these two threads, books and perfumery, together in a way I could never have imagined as a girl. On a trip to China, I brought home a baby unexpectedly, an orphan that a friend was planning to adopt; she ended up not being able to go through with it. I brought the baby home to a new life, and sat down for the next two years to write a book about the experience.

The book, “Forever Lily”, was published in 2007; while I was editing the book, it occurred to me how often I referenced scent, and the impact it had on me during this trip.  I conceived of the idea to create a fragrance inspired by this experience, but I had no idea how I would do that.  Things led to things, and a year later a fragrance was born, also called ‘foreverlily’, and with that I became a fragrance entrepreneur.

Beth Nonte Russell and Pamela Vaile at the Fragrance Foundation Award ceremony, June 2018; Potentia Amber Gold was nominated and was a top ten finalist  as "Indie Fragrance of the Year"

My current project, House of Potentia, takes me deeper into perfumery than I would ever have imagined I would go. It came about years after launching foreverlily, when I met a long time beauty industry consultant, Pamela Vaile.  We were in discussion about working together, and I mentioned an idea I had, or really more of a question: could we create a perfume that helps someone reach their highest potential?  This thought came out of my experience doing therapy with clients, thinking of alternative ways to help those who were struggling with existence and with defining themselves in this world. It felt to me that something more was needed to help these clients, and that focusing on pathology, making life struggles a ‘disease’, did more harm than good.  In therapy session it often seemed to help when we could focus on what was possible, rather than what was ‘wrong’.

House of Potentia

The original idea evolved into a fragrance line that seeks to help people navigate life in a new way, and to see themselves in the context of unlimited potential. I believe perfume has the power to bring us to states of higher awareness, help us learn about and understand ourselves, and bring us to a deeper appreciation of our unique lives and the beauty of the world. House of Potentia was created to explore all facets of the human experience using perfumery as a tool. House of Potentia is a new way of approaching the use of fragrance; not as storytelling or aspiration to a fantasy, but as a way to deepen connection to our inner selves. This, to me, is the only journey worth taking.

On American Perfumery: There are distinctly American traits and values that have shaped the way I approached House of Potentia.  I grew up during the ‘anything goes’ era of the 1960’s and ‘70’s; I truly believed that anything was possible.  Our brand, House of Potentia, is about pushing past limitations and expanding your view of yourself; a mindset very much influenced by American culture.  Being an American implies being willing to take risks, to try new things and new viewpoints, which leads to personal growth; that is what  House of Potentia is all about.

Favorite American Artist: When I was writing my book, “Forever Lily”, I stumbled upon a cd by the amazing cellist YoYo Ma. It was his “Silk Road Journeys” album, and I played it each and every time I sat down to write.  It transported me immediately to another land, another time…and always put me in an altered state where I could write with inspiration.  I admire the breadth of his musical interests, the different genres and styles that he explores and shares with all of us.

I thought the idea of a book’s smell was pretty interesting. I used to notice that as a kid too, that archives would have a very distinct smell. As I got older, I noticed that same smell in some fragrances and it really takes me back.
If I win,I’d like the Silver Thread since I’ve been on a neroli kick lately. Though the description of many of them sound really appealing. Especially the White Light, which sounds very Mediterranean.

Wow! Great profile! House of Potentia sounds like amazing house. I had never heard them until now. I also have a huge love of books, as well as fragrances. I’m very interested in trying out all of these scents, so if I were to win, I’d choose the Scent Journal, so I could give each one a try. I also liked “ Profiles in American Perfumery” on Facebook.

I loved reading this. I also love the smell of books – loved going to the library to pick them out. I have a library in my home with thousands of books. The path Beth took to motherhood is fascinating – I will be purchasing that book to read! If I won I would choose the Scent Journal. In looking at the descriptions of the fragrances I don’t know that I could choose just one.
I have liked “Profiles in American Perfumery” on Facebook.
Thank you for this very generous draw. I’m in the US.

This is, hands down, my favorite story I have read on CaFleureBon. I never had the desire to be a mother, but can appreciate the absolute love that washed over her to decide then and there to bring her daughter home. Destiny is no matter of chance, but choice. I would love to try the scent journal.

This was a really great introduction to a fragrance house that I had never heard of before this! I also share a love of books and have a copy of Forever Lily. It’s a really great read. Beth’s path to perfumery intrigued me. If I were to choose, it would be the Scent Journal. I have liked “Profiles in American Perfumery” and thanks for the draw. I live in the US! 🙂

  • I liked CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery. I enjoyed Beth’s first communion picture, and how she met her soon to be daughter Lily. All the fragrances sound amazing, I would choose the Scent Journal, in order to enjoy all of them. In the USA.

  • What an interesting path to perfumery and an even more interesting impetus to start her company…becoming one’s best self. If I were lucky enough to win I would be equally thrilled with the Scent Journal or Silver
    Thread.

Beth has an interesting story. Biographies like these also introduce me to departmental stores that were part of America but have gone extinct since then. In a way, Beth’s adoption of Lily helped shaped her perfumery path though she has always been fascinated by perfumes. My choice is Scent Journal 5×8. I am in US.

I love the idea of creating a perfume based on events that change our lives. The creation of Forever Lily was a beautiful recognition to all the wonderful changes her daughter Lily brough to Beth’s life. I also identify myself with the smell of books. It brings me nice memories of my childhood in school. I never heard of House of Potentia before, so I would love to win the Scent Journal to have the possibility of trying the scents from this house. They all sound great, especially Amber Gold. I am in the USA.Thank for the draw.

  • House of Potentia sounds really good. I’ve never heard of them until now. I would love to try all of them but in case i win then i would go with Indigo Flame bottle. Thanks for this amazing draw. I have liked Cafleurebon profiles in american perfumery.

Like others commenting here, I too had not heard of this house. Thank you for bringing this story to us. There are a lot of interesting parts to it: thumbing of pages in old books as a child for the scent and the way music can facilitate an “altered state” for the purpose of inspired writing are two experiences with which I can easily identify. Given this interesting story, I’m anxious to experience the full line, so I’d pick the scent journal. Liked on facebook, in the US! Thanks.

  • First time I have heard of Potenia. Loved reading about the experience at Hook’s Drug Store. If picked the Potentia’s Scent Journal (5×8 ml) please. US

Interesting that Beth wouldn’t read books if she didn’t like the smell. I never really noticed things like that. We must be of a similar generation….I wore Love’s Baby Soft. Her book and fragrance Foreverlily sounds fascinating. I will check into the book. Thanks for the chance. US.

I had not yet heard of this house and am always looking to discover interesting new American perfumes, so thank you for introducing us to Beth. It seems she has truly lived the American dream. When someone’s joy of life is so evident for all to see, it is assured that this happiness is reflected in their work. I am excited to sample her creations! White Light, with its “brilliant fig” note and encouragement of the mind to take flight, would be the first I’d like to try. Thank you to Beth and Cafleurebon for this most generous draw! I live in the US and have liked and follow your profiles page.

  • This was an incredibly interesting article. I love the quote “I believe perfume has the power to bring us to states of higher awareness, help us learn about and understand ourselves, and bring us to a deeper appreciation of our unique lives and the beauty of the world.” I feel that way about perfume. It is like “medicine” for me. It helps lift my spirits or calm my soul, depending on the choice of perfume I wear.

I would love to try everything from this perfume house, so my choice would be the Discovery Kit.

    I live in the US.

I enjoyed reading about the philosophy behind House of Potentia. I agree that fragrance can be part of a path to reach our potential. I mainly believe this because I wear fragrance to give me a boost of confidence, to help push me down a path that sometimes seems so fraught with uncertainty. I have certain fragrances that instil me with confidence and determination.
I’d choose the Scent Journal if I were the winner.
    I live in the USA.

  • This story really touched me,to adopt a child is one of the greatest things a human being can do. And it is something I plan to do in the future, there’s just so many babies out in the world who need love & care. Beth Nonte Russell if you are reading this thank you for being a light & a beautiful selfless soul in this world, I wish there were humans like you, and as for fragrances being a transport to another world, I agree completely, It all resonates with me! perfumes for me are spiritual- I feel they trigger old memories, even past life experiences, & they also calm me down, i suffer from anxiety. I truly feel scents are powerful. I am so glad I read this blog post, this is a beautiful fragrance house I cant wait to experience. If I were chosen I would pick the Potentia’s Scent Journal, I am USA based. Thank you again for this post.
