CaFleureBon Ginger in Perfumery: ‘The Plant of Burning Desire’ + 10 Niche & Natural Ginger Perfume Prizes

Ginger is a spice, biting sometimes, fresh and mild if young and tender, hot and fragrant when mature, and quite potent when old.  It may be called gingembre in French, gingifere in Old English, even inji ver (Tamil) or by its scientific name Zingiber officinale.  Other members of this fragrant family include ginger lily, galangal (Thai ginger), turmeric, and cardamom.  Ginger lily rhizomes and flowers both produce fragrant products that may be distilled or extracted for perfumery. There are more than 1000 species in the ginger family from Africa, Asia, and the Americas and many of them are fragrant. All have large rhizomes or underground stems that are fleshy and often spicy.  Many are used as ornamental plants having unusual flowers and attractive foliage. The flowers and leaves may also be used in food preparation in addition to the rhizome.  From this large family with scented leaves, flowers, seeds, and rhizomes we get a wondrous variety of fragrant products but it is ancient and complex ginger that is most familiar and perhaps most widely used.

Mi, 1929, Francis Picabia. French (1879 – 1953)

Ginger essential oil is used in perfumery to add spice and depth to Oriental or spice blends. It’s also valuable for incense or gourmand fragrances and a tiny bit will add interest to florals.  When fresh ginger is distilled it keeps a light, lemony and fresh ginger note that is lovely with citruses and tropical florals. Fresh ginger essential oil has a true zingy ginger odor highlighted by a lemony topnote while the other has a deep, spicy, woody scent sometimes accompanied by a hint of earthiness. Fresh ginger essential oil adds an interesting unique vibrancy to oriental perfumes. While it is often compared to black pepper or cinnamon bark, its spice is fresh and uplifting. Fresh ginger is unexpected and original and adds freshness, heat and spice to floral blends. It blends well with amber, bitter orange, petitgrain and pink lotus. It is worth seeking out a truly great fresh ginger as many ginger essential oils on the market can have a “cooked” note and lack the vibrancy that a good quality fresh ginger oil possesses. Two types of essential oil are produced from ginger, one from the dried rhizome and one from the fresh rhizome. There are three main components, zingerone, shogaols, and gingerols that make up about 1 – 3 percent of the weight and give the characteristic odor and flavor.

I once heard that the best way to thank someone for a plant is to pass along a piece of it to someone else.  If you’d like to propagate your ginger plant or give some away, it is best to use the rhizome (the spicy, thick root-like structure) and make sure some growth nodules included.  They look like the eyes of a potato.  Ginger plants do well potted but don’t always bloom.  Most plants in the ginger family are perennial with reed-like leafy stems that may grow up to a meter tall.  Once the stalk withers the fleshy root or rhizome can be gathered. If it is scalded or washed and scraped it will not sprout.  Or, the root can be divided and planted to grow more ginger plants

The ancient Romans appreciated ginger but it declined in use after the fall of the Roman Empire.  However, Marco Polo came back from the Far East with ginger, bringing it back into favor in Europe.  Trade in spices, with ginger playing an important role, is an ancient commerce extending back into antiquity and was conducted both overland and by the sea with spices commanding high prices.  Beginning with a monopoly in the Middle East, the sources of the spices were kept secret and often the subject of imaginative tales and source of vast riches. Ginger is one of the spices mentioned in 1001 Arabian nights. In 1585, Jamaican ginger, said to be the best, was the first oriental spice grown in the New World and imported back to Europe. It grows wild in the Caribbean Islands adding to the lush tropical settings.

In western cooking ginger is usually used in sweet foods like ginger ale, gingerbread, cookies and even a ginger-flavored liqueur called Canton from Jarnac, France. The leaves may be used in Vietnamese soups to add a subtle flavor of ginger. Jamaicans make ginger beer as a carbonated beverage but will also make it fresh in their homes for drinking. Queen Elizabeth I invented gingerbread men which became a popular Christmas treat. Colonial apothecaries relied heavily on ginger and used it as an infusion for a cure-all. Warm plasters made with powdered ginger and whiskey were used to relieve pain. Some suggest using a small bit of powdered ginger inside slippers or shoes may help keep your feet warm.  Daily consumption of ginger may reduce muscle pain associated with exercise by 25%. One of its best known uses is for nausea; in fact it was tested by Mythbusters (a television show that tests the truth of myths and legends) as a seasickness cure. They built a seasick chair and got quite sick by spinning around and found that ginger pills worked to alleviate the nausea.  Ginger is considered one of the most important plants used in herbal medicine and is mentioned in some of the oldest medical texts from both India and China.

Mambarang by pervandr

In the Philippines practitioners of sorcery are called Mambabarang, also known as familiar spirits. The mambabarang keeps beetles in a bottle or in a section of bamboo and feeds the beetles ginger root.  When he is ready to attack a particular person he will whisper the name of the victim to the beetles and release them.

ginger increases desire (illustration Kama Sutra)

Ginger can stimulate the circulatory system and warm the body, all influences that may contribute to its effects as an aphrodisiac. It also increases the heart rate and circulation. Perhaps the spicy rich fragrance is also a signal for romance and passion.  Avicenna, the ancient Arab physician credited ginger with increasing lustful yearnings and as a cure for impotence.  The French Courtesan, Madame du Barry, who was mistress to Louis XV, was said to feed ginger to her lovers to make them completely submissive to her desires.  The Kama Sutra mentions it as an enhancement for love making.  In Senegal women have worn belts containing ginger roots to enhance their partner’s desire and it has been used in love rituals throughout Asia and the South Pacific. Sometimes known as the plant of burning desire, ginger has spice, it has a sweet richness, it has complexity and a sharp tang.  Keep a bit of ginger around as an important ingredient in the formula of love.

You’ve made me crave ginger … I’ll have to resort to crystallised ginger pieces;-)

I didn’t know about “the Philippines practitioners of sorcery … called Mambabarang”, and that picture is scary! I’ll be keeping all my ginger to myself and not sharing with any beetles, ever.

I was not aware that ginger as a remedy for nausea was proven effective on Mythbusters! It is a wonderful spice and so useful.

Ginger Ciao, Ginger Musk, Ginger Lily and Saffre. Thanks for the opportunity.

  • Ok, the Mambarang story scared the c*** out of me!
Beetles? My gods, even worse – voodoo beetles! With me having a phobia of anything insectoid, this just gave me the goosebumps all over. Yikes!

    My picks would be
    Ginger Ciao by Yosh Han;
Ginger Lily by Providence Perfume Co.
    Temple by Anya McCoy;
    Ginger Musk by Montale

    Beetles.

  • I love fresh ginger, it’s taste and fragrance. I am aware of the medicinal uses but I did not know Queen Elizabeth I invented gingerbread men.

Serge Lutens Five O’Clock au Gigembre
    Yosh Han Ginger Ciao
    JoAnne Bassett Petit Trianon
    Tallulah Jayne Halona

    Thanks for the draw!

  • Interesting facts about Ginger…wow I did not realize and learned that there are more then 1000 species in the ginger family from Africa, Asia, and the Americas and many of them are fragrant. I would have never guessed!!!! And I also did not know that daily consumption of ginger may reduce muscle pain associated with exercise by 25%, that explains why it has been in Chinese herbal medicine for a long long time. Amazing.

    My picks would be:
    Montale Ginger Musk

Wonderful draw, thank you and a lovely review

  • I associate Ginger merely with the “rhizome”, so I found it interesting to consider the totality of the plant (leaves and flowers). I did not know that Ginger produced flowers. These monthly investigations of notes are one of my favorite features of Cafleurebon (both the words and the pictures). They always manage to be both concise and incredibly informative. My choices would be:

Serge Lutens- Five O’Clock au Gigembre
    Etat Libre D’Orange-Like This
    Anya’s Garden- Temple
    JoAnne Basset- Petit Trianon

    THANK YOU!

    Ginger Lily

  • I didn’t realize there were two different ginger essential oils. I just adore ginger, both to smell and in cuisine. My picks would be Five o’clock au gingembre, Halona by Tallulah Jayne, Petit Trianon, and Etat Libre d’Orange. Thanks for the great draw!

  • Wow! another amazing article Elise!

i am always fascinated by the meeting of aroma and myth or magic, so i found the whole beetle ritual gob-smacking.

    Ginger Lily, Providence Perfume Co
    Petit Trianon, JoAnne Bassett
    Temple, Anya’s Garden

    and the author’s own Saffre

    thank you!

  • I didn’t know that the Romans used ginger and then it disappeared… so interesting the history of these spices. Also fascinating that Marco Polo brought it back.

I truly would be happy with any of these prizes, but here are my top four:

    Ginger Ciao
    Petit Trianon
    Ginger Lily
    Ginger Musk

  • Interesting that Queen Elizabeth I invented gingerbread men! My choices would be:

    5 O’Clock au Gingembre
    Ginger Ciao

    Ginger Musk
    Ginger Lily

  • I knew that ginger is alleged to be an antidote for an upset stomach, but never took it too seriously. I can’t tell you how many times I was dosed with ginger ale as a kid, but I always thought it was a lot of baloney and the only reason it worked was because carbonated drinks make you belch, lol! My point is that the Mythbusters bit was totally new information, and useful at that. 🙂
    My picks:

    PP’s Ginger Lily
    Yosh’s Ginger Ciao
    EldO’s Like This
    Luten’s 5 O’Clock.

Thank you for the lovely article and generous draw.

  • This is an excellent article and made me realize I really didn’t know much about ginger. I only know I use it as a relief from arthritis. I don’t think I own a single perfume with a detectable ginger note.
The thing that struck me the most (because I am a categorization geek) is that ginger and cardamom are related. I also find it interesting that there are several varieties of the essential oil (from fresh or dried roots). I never imagined that ginger was known to the Romans. Always thought of it as something that was relatively new to the western culture.

My choices, should I win would be:

    Ginger Ciao
    Five O’Clock au Gingembre
    Petit Trianon
    Saffre
    Temple

Elise! The material series are the best !!! Keep’em coming please!

  • I learned that ginger oil could be retrieved from both the dried and fresh rhizome. It was also interesting to learn about the Mambarang and how they fed ginger to beetles. More disturbing is how they’d use the beetles!

Ginger fragrances I’d love to try:
Serge Lutens – Five O’Clock Au Gigembre
    Yosh Han – Ginger Ciao
    JoAnne Bassett – Petit Trainon
    Tallulah Jayne – Halona

  • Wow…I didn’t know that there are actually two different essential oils distilled from ginger. I also didn’t know that Queen Elizabeth invented gingerbread men; that’s nifty! I love, love, LOVE the taste and smell of ginger, so this is a pretty exciting draw. (I have Like This already, so I won’t be asking for it…but it’s SO wonderful. Other folks, consider that scent!)

Should I win, I would love and adore anything, but I am particularly burning for the following:

Serge Lutens Five O’Clock au Gingembre
    Yosh Han Ginger Ciao
    Tallulah Jayne Halona
    Bellyflowers Saffre
    Anya’s Garden Temple

My choices are 5 O’clock au Gingembre, Like This, Providence Perfume Co Ginger Lily and Petit Trianon.

  • I adore ginger in food it adds a burst of freshness and spice that uplifts the dining experience. This article has enlightened me on its perfumery use I really didn’t realize it adds so many facets to a scent. I learned that two types of essential oil are produced from ginger, one from the dried rhizome and one from the fresh rhizome. The scents that I am fervently looking forward to sniffing are Anya’s Garden Temple, Halona by Tallulah Jayne, Ginger Ciao by Yosh Han and Serge Lutens Five O’Clock au Gigembre. Thanks!

  • It blends well with amber, bitter orange, petitgrain and pink lotus…I was wondering what ginger would blend well with, good to know! I always knew about ginger taming nausea and it has always been a staple in my house when there is a stomach bug going around. What I did not know was that it comes from the same family as tumeric- another spice with fantastic health benefits! I also did not know that it is considered an aphrodisiac…no wonder I love to consume it so much :)!! Finally, in perusing essential oils I often saw that the fresh ginger eo was separated from the dried ginger eo…now I know why. I am going to have to get me some fresh ginger eo as I am very curious to make the scent comparison between the two! Thank you, Elise for this informative post and generous draw!

I just love this article as in spite of knowing its aphrodisiac/ therapeutic nature I had no idea Ginger had such an importance in supernatural beliefs and its reintroduction in Europe by Marco Polo after its ´ban ´ makes Ginger a historically important ingredient as it shows a vignette of the European states of mind..so intriguing..

There were many new things to learn here including Queen Elizabeth I’s invention of the gingerbread man, the use of ginger to ease muscle pain, and its efficacy as an aphrodisiac.

I would love to win Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’s Indochine EdP and shea butter, Yosh Han’s Ginger Ciao, Saffre Perfume, and Anya’s Garden Temple.

    Thanks for the draw.

  • The Kuma Sutra lists it as an enhancement for lovemaking. Who knew?

    My burning desires:
    Petit Trianon (Bassett)
    Ginger Musk (Montale)
    Ginger Ciao (Han)
    Saffre (Ophiucus)

    Thanks!

  • I didn’t know that ginger stimulated circulation and heart rate. I live in Singapore part of the year and walk in their beautiful Botanic Gardens everyday. There is a Ginger Garden there and I love to walk through it for it piquant smell.

    Ginger Lily
    Petit Trianon
    Temple Garden
    Thanks for a great draw!

  • Thank you for this informative article and generous draw!

I learned: that ginger lilies are a real thing; that there are many related plants like galangal; that people used ginger topically as a powder, not just ingested; that the leaves are used in some cuisines, not just the root; that it grows wild in Jamaica; that a Mythbusters episode found ginger an effective nausea cure… I kind of want to hunt down that episode but think I’d get dizzy watching it!

I would be happy to win any of these! But a few did jump out at me right away. My picks would be:

ELdO Like This (has been on my to-try list since I read the first ress release, yet, have not even sniffed! this must be remedied…)
    DSH Indochine

    Anya McCoy Temple
    Providence Perfume Ginger Lily
    Saffre Perfume by Elise Pearlstine
    Tallulah Jayne Halona
    .
(hey you said *at least* four and the naturals all look amazing!!!)

Unfortunately while I adore the scent of Petite Trianon, I got bad contact dermatitis from the Royal Collection samples… I think there is a natural plant essence to which I am allergic. So I can only wear this on a cotton ball/scarf/ etc and would have to pass on this one. Hopefully someone else can fully enjoy and appreciate its beauty. It was one of my top 2 from the Royal Collection and it feels like soft fresh bright sunlight through the high branches of an old forest, like a magical place, ancient and purely innocent at the same time.

  • Loved the slightly creepy story about the Philippine magicians and the bugs… brr! Also interesting is the fact that you make two essential oils from ginger, one dried and one fresh, with different properties. Almost like in cooking!
    If I won, I’d like:

    Five o’ clock au Gingembre
    Like This by Tilda Swinton

    Ginger Lily
    Petit Trianon

Thanks for an interesting article and fun draw!

  • Ginger has to be my favourite spice. I love that it can burn in sweet and savoury dishes. Learned a ot. In fact pretty nearly everything in this post was new to me. I’m going to try the powdered ginger in my shoes trick to see if indeed one can warm feet that way. Its getting cold here.

I’d love to be entered in the draw for:
Etat Libre d’Orange Like This Tilda Swinton
    Montale’s Ginger Musk
    Providence Perfume Co’s Ginger Lily
    Anya’s Garden Temple

  • It’s funny to think that ginger, about as basic a kitchen ingredient as pepper or salt, was one of the most HIGHLY prized spices of the past. Really gives you some perspective on the “wealth” of the modern world.

And to think…we have a queen to thank for gingerbread men!

    For the draw:

Montale’s Ginger Musk (one of my all-time fave perfume houses!)
    Etat Libre D’Orange
    Anya’s Temple

  • Wow, this was such an educational article. Thank you, learnt many things… I will try to grow my own and will use it more often now (I love ginger, but sometimes don’t feel like menstruating early -which drinking a lot of ginger does) But I have just gone back to practicing yoga after a long after birth break, and plan on returning to kong fu, and know my muscles will thank me for the extra help. 25%! who can say no to that?!

perfumes I am burning with desire for (In no spicific order): Tallula Jane Halona, JoAnne Bassett ‘s Petit Trianon, Anya McCoy’s Temple, Charna Ethier Ginger Lily

Thank you again for the information and the exciting chance to win.

  • Ooo–I forgot to mention–making your own Ginger Ale or Ginger Beer is so incredibly easy! Chopped fresh ginger, juice of a lime, some rapadura, and a pinch of sea salt blended into water and kept in a quart-sized mason jar for a few days and WHAM–perfume material you can drink!

Would go perfect with one of the Queen’s gingerbread men!

    4th Pick:

Ginger Lily sounds like a great addition!

  • I was not aware that there are over 1000 species in the ginger family. That I find intriquing. It would be interesting to explore the different facets of these various types from different regions etc. I am very fond of ginger beer. It was one of my favorite growing up.

If I were given the choice I would select

Five O’Clock au Gigembre. The reviews for this one are great and I will admit that I have yet to give it a whiff.
Ginger Lily. I have become curious about Providence Perfume Co. since the Moss Gown article.
Ginger Ciao… I have tried both White Flowers and Stargazer, and did not like either one. This would be the last attempt at enjoying a fragrance from this company for me. The fact that there is also black coconut and basil just sounds so interesting.
Etat Libre D’Orange Like This Tilda Swinton. What would be the difference in ginger from Indonesia and the other interpretations..? I will admit that I am curious.
Saffre Perfume. Mixing ginger with frankincense and myhrr… enough said.

(I couldn’t decide between the Tilda Swinton and Yosh… either would be fabulous)

    Thanks!

  • Just to rectify my choice for natura frags:

    2 naturals :

    JoAnne Bassett – Petit Trainon

Thanks for the draw. I’d be really pleased to win any of the following:
    Providence Perfume Co. ‘Ginger Lily’
    Anya’s Garden ‘Temple’

    also,
    Ginger Lily
    Petit Trianon

  • I get airsick often and have spent a good bit of time in small wobbly planes. I can vouch for ginger candies, they work every time. Even better than ginger ale. Such a fun ingredient to write about and lovely to work with in perfumery.

  • A cure for seasickness? Omg, this fact can be my lifesaver, I get sick even in a bus, a car, a monocycle (well, maybe i’m exaggerating here…or not. I didn’t know almost everything you said in this article, this kind of things are the stuff I love about Cafleurebon. The invention of the gingerbread men by Queen Elizabeth I is one of this curious facts that are useful in a random conversation, my favorite kind of conversation.

    Tallulah Jane Halona

    Thanks for having this draw. I LOVE ginger! (-;

  • I knew that ginger is used both in perfumery, as well as for cooking, but I did not know it’s also considered to have aphrodisiac abilities or that it’s good to alleviate sickness. I enjoyed reading about this versatile and quite potent spice plant.

“Ginger is a spice, biting sometimes, fresh and mild if young and tender, hot and fragrant when mature, and quite potent when old” – my favorite quote, so simple, makes me visualize all the stages that ginger goes through.

As for my picks, I choose: Ginger Ciao, Five o’clock au gingembre, Like this Tilda Swinton, Petit Trianon and Saffre Perfume

  • Had no idea that ginger is used in witchcraft or that is highly regarded as an aphrodisiac. You learn something new everyday it seems.

My choices are: Like This, Five o’Clock au Gingembre, Petit Trianon and Ginger Ciao.

    Thanks!

  • I love ancient myths and found the one of the Mambabarang very entertaining: having a pack of ginger-fueled bugs to magically attack your enemies? If that is not the coolest idea for a comic book character, I don’t know what else could be…
Also, I will have to try that remedy with the ginger powder inside my slippers, as I always have cold feet 🙂
I’d love to win Like This, Five o’Clock Au Gingembre, Ginger Lily and Halona.

  • I have always wondered why ginger essential oil smells a bit dull and muddy, thanks for enlightening me!

    I would love to win:….hmmm…

    Saffre! that sounds glorious!

Hard to choose just four, but I pick:

    Five O’Clock au Gingembre
    Like This Tilda Swinton
    Petit Trianon
    Saffre Perfume

  • I already knew about ginger for anti-nausea and tummyache – it really works! I would always ask for ginger ale as a remedy as a tot, and now mix it with orange juice when I have a cold. But I never knew to try putting powder in my slippers to keep my feet warm. They’ll smell nice, too.

This was a very fun and informative article! I am a big ginger fan.

  • Loved the article!
Learned about two types of oil – from fresh and dried roots – it explaines the differencies in quality I’ve met in ginger oils. Seems that even essential oil from ginger flowers exists – have seen it in South Asia.
Fresh ginger really cures nausea and also helps with sore throat – tried it onece in Thai when no “normal” drugs were around))

  • I’ve been fascinated with herbs in general for years, and I keep several herbalist books on hand to refer to. I have chronic tummy issues and ginger tea works wonders for that. I’ve been aware of its anti-inflamatory properties as well – but aphrodisiac? That’s a new one and I’ll have to keep that in mind for future use! 😀 My mom has wild ginger growing in her yard in Georgia, so I’ll be sure to try the propagation method next time I visit her.

The ginger fragrances I’d most like to try would be:
    Five O’Clock au Gigembre
    DSH Indochine
    Providence Perfume Co. Ginger Lily

I liked the statement, “The best way to thank someone for a plant is to pass along a piece of it to someone else.” I will be doing just that! I took a piece of ginger from my kitchen and planted a piece this morning too. I would love to know the sources of your article. • I love learning the history and health benefits behind botanicals in perfumery. After reading the article I have a whole arsenal of holistic ginger remedies to try. It is especially great timing with the chilly wet weather hitting where I live. I’ll be most curious to try ginger powder for chilblains! It was also great to see that it mixes well with petitgrain and pink lotus as I have not yet thought to try it with those botanicals. I think the most curious scent I mixed with ginger for a perfume was green cognac.
Hmm. I wonder if Queen Elizabeth ate the heads off the ginger cookies first.”Off with their heads!”
Burning to try? Holy hell I would spontaneously combust to try any of the perfumes. Since I have tried Charna’s GL and The Montale’s 2nd billing of musk makes me shiver I’ll just pick:
