Here in the Northeast, September is a fickle month and temperatures can soar or plummet. The long slow march from summer into fall is upon us along with the changing leaves and cooler weather. Video Contributor Steven Gavrielatos and I recommend our three best transitional fragrances for Autumn.
Jovoy Paris Aqua Memorabilis, Ineke Field Notes From Paris (middle) and Parfums de Marly Oajan By Steven
One of the most natural smelling citruses that Steven has ever encountered Jovoy Paris Aqua Memorabilis is one of the best examples of transitional fragrances for Autumn because it can be worn when the weather is very hot , but also when it begins to cool down. Jovoy Paris Aqua Memorabilis is being for summer only. “It’s a citrusy, very woody and resolutely modern, powerful perfume, composed to wrap its wearer in an unforgettable fragrance trail. At first comes a wave of clementine poised between fruit and zest, a lively bouquet tinged with bittersweet green notes, with grapefruit, pink peppercorn and bitter orange sharing the lead. Pepper and violet delicately veil a decidedly fruity top note. A powerful wave of cedarwood a delicate wisp of vetiver, rounded out by creamy sandalwood and intense musk, rests on an “indelible” amber wood base. – Steven and Francois Henin owner of Jovoy (joe -voy) Paris
Notes: Clementine, Grapefruit Bitter Orange, Pink Peppercorn, Violet, Pepper, Clementine Juice, Cedar, Vetiver, Sandalwood, Muscs, Amber Woods
Ineke Rühland, of the San Francisco-based artisan house INeKE created Fields Notes from Paris while reminiscing about her days in Paris training as a perfumer, reflected upon the words of T.S. Eliot: “Life is measured in coffee spoons.” With one spritz you are transported to a small Parisian café on a clear autumn day, when the weather has just become a little chilly and the scent of Gitanes cigarettes clings to your leather jacket. You watch as leaves dance and swirl on honeyed orange blossom breezes. One of our best transitional fragrances in part because of Ms. Ruhland’s sophisticated use of tobacco- the flower, and the leaf. – Michelyn
Ineke Ruhland is classically trained, and taught marketing at ISPICA to Perfumer Yann Vasnier.
Notes: Coriander Seed, Orange Flower, Bergamot, Tobacco Flower and Leaf, Patchouli, Cedar, Tonka Bean, Leather, Beeswax, Vanilla
Parfums de Marly Oajan (Oh ah John) by Perfumer Shyamala Maisondieu is one of the best transitional fragrances for autumn with brilliant tones of cinnamon, honey, and vanilla. Resins, labdanum and benzoin add warmth. Patchouli and musk add depth and longevity that lasts all day on my skin and into the long cold night. Oajan is the olfactive equivalent of amber-hued sunsets and wraps around you like a blanket when the temperature starts to drop. –Michelyn
Parfums de Marly Oajan Notes: Honey, Cinnamon, Osmanthus, Amber, Labdanum, Benzoin, Vanilla, Tonka Bean, Patchouli, Davana
Steven Gavriolatos’s video review
Disclosure: Steven received Aqua Memorabilis for a previous review, all others from his collection. Michelyn received a sample of Oajan and has a nearly empty bottle of Field Notes from 2009.
