Best Coconut Perfumes That Don’t Smell like Sunscreen + 3 you should be wearing

Best coconut perfumes that don't smell like sunscreen

Coconut perfumes image by Steven

It’s challenging to find a coconut perfume that doesn’t smell like sunscreen. I don’t want my perfume to smell like Coppertone, and neither does Steven, we want to spritz not slather on fragrance.  We co-curated three; all created by artisan perfumers- each reminds us of beaches, sunshine, tropical breezes, a cool drink and a coconut tree to sit under – paradise!

Before Steven’s reviews let’s meet our indie perfumers who will share their creative inspiration for composing unique coconut perfumes.-Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz of DSH Perfumes

DSH Perfumes Maui (Dawn Spencer Hurwitz): Dawn Spencer Hurwitz is the first American Perfumer featured in our Series (that officially began July 11, 2011). Dawn is one of the most gifted and prolific indie perfumers around and the recipient of the Art and Olfaction Award  2019 for her collaboration with American Perfumer-Colorado.

“I used natural coconut pulp co2 which I feel helps keep the coconut note in the sphere of feeling that I wanted as well as using natural Hawaiian sandalwood.  I specifically didn’t want any sunscreen scent or vibes as the typical sunscreen note is an added fragrance to help one know that there is sunscreen present in a product. It’s literally there in ’sunscreen’ products to signal its “effectiveness”… and I really don’t care for that aroma. Many coconut perfumes include that sunscreen note, not because it’s a byproduct of creating a coconut accord, but as an aesthetic choice to have both coconut and sunscreen to connote a summer time / vacation fragrance.  Maui is all tropical vacation without the sunscreen scent.”

Key Notes: Coconut, Ambrette seeds, Sandalwood, Cedar, Tahitian Vanilla, Musk

Ryan Hunts of Beach Geeza

Ryan Hunts of Beach Geeza courtesy of the perfumer

Beach Geeza Coco Moon (Ryan Hunts): Ryan was having a lively conversation with two good friends about creating a fragrance house and spontaneously the name ‘Beach Geeza’ popped out of his mouth and  everyone shouted, ‘That’s it!  Beach Geeza!  That’s you Man!’ Right then and there the vision was born to create perfumes that smell like the ultimate beach vacation. ‘Coco Moon,’ which to this day is the most popular perfume in the Beach Geeza line and considered by some fans as the ultimate beach vacation fragrance and here’s why:

“Coco Moon is unique because it’s earthy in the base with an oakmoss accord and natural Moroccan Cedar.  I use natural Tuberose as part of the piña colada coconut accord in the heart of the fragrance which gives lots of natural depth and sensuousness, differentiating it from other ‘Coconut sunscreen’ scents in the genre.  Coco Moon was designed to create the satisfying feeling of sitting on the beach with a tropical drink in hand.” –Ryan

Notes: Top: Bergamot, Fresh Pineapple; Heart: CoconutTuberoseJasmine; Base: BenzoinSandalwoodCedar Wood, Oak MossVanilla

Sarah Horowitz-Thran of Sarah Horowitz Parfums

Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfect Coconut Milk (Sarah Horowitz Thran): I awarded Sarah Horowitz-Thran the CaFleureBon 2020 Hall of Fame “the godmother of American Indie Perfumers”. I fist discovered her “Perfect perfumes” including Perfect Veil (1999) which is a hugely popular skin scent when I was a publicist at Luckyscent in 2005. In addition to her own eponymous collection, Sarah designed fragrances for well known brands including kai, IF and Bronzed for Ron Robinson, all the limited-edition Urban Decay fragrances and many more.

I was the imagining standing on the sand, between the waves of an ocean warm enough to wade into, and with a lush jungle behind me. The feel of the air like a caress, a light breeze that mingled the scents of the sea, the scents of the gardenia and plumeria from the lush green beyond the sand, I used green coconut for freshness, a bit of toasted coconut that added lactonic nuances along with a hint of almond in the top note to make it mouthwatering.  The middle note accord captures the tropical florals that grow rampant in the pacific islands, along with a touch of orange blossom. The base has tonka bean, which reminds me of coconut olfactively, and hints of vanilla and musk, to capture skin glowing in the sun.”

Notes: Coconut, almond, orange blossom, gardenia, tonka bean, vanilla, Egyptian musk.

I’m very interested in trying Coco Moon. After watching Redolescent’s video and reading the review made me even more so.

Notes: Top: Bergamot, Fresh Pineapple; Heart: Coconut, Tuberose, Jasmine; Base: Benzoin, Sandalwood, Cedar Wood, Oak Moss, Vanilla. I am intrigued by the notes especially Benzoin and Sandalwood in particular. A wonderful description by Michelyn and Steven. Thanks a million from the UK

  • I have only recently been getting into coconut fragrances and though I don’t mind the sunscreen variety, I certainly prefer those that take a different approach. I appreciated Michelyn’s blurb about the history of Beach Geeza and how the name came out of nowhere and just seemed to fit. Michelyn commented on Coco Moon being the quintessential beach fragrance for many people and I have heard a lot of great things about it myself, but have yet to try it. Steven applauded its depth and earthy facets, which also have me intrigued. I must say, though, it is that coconut/pineapple combo – that pina colada element – that has me salivating. That said, I would go with Beach Geeza Coco Moon if I were to be selected. I live in NC, USA.

  • Great description by Steven really fascinated by the earth facets of this fragrance particularly oak moss and cedar. A fragrance that doesn’t smell like sun tan lotion has definitely got to be a winner in my book. Thanks a lot from the United Kingdom

  • Thomas Cameron says:

I would love to win Maui. Both reviews make you want to go out and buy all three. I live in Florida USA.

  • Ken White says:

Lately, I’ve developed a newfound interest in coconut fragrances. While I don’t mind the sunscreen-like scents, I’m particularly drawn to those that offer a unique twist. Michelyn’s description of the backstory behind Beach Geeza caught my attention, as the name seemingly appeared out of nowhere but perfectly suits the fragrance.

Coco Moon has piqued my curiosity, and I’m eager to try it out. Watching Redolescent’s video and reading their review only intensified my desire to experience it firsthand. New Jersey, USA

  • I live in Florida. I’ve been wanting Coco Moon forever. Both the video and the written information were beneficial.

  • johnmadison says:

Thank you for the reviews Michelynn and Steven!
All three sound like wonderful fragrances but wow I would just be elated to win Coco Moon! The white florals and pineapple paired with the coconut sounds divine!
I am also following on instagram by the handle of Jay.Bonez

  • I really hate it when a perfume or a fragrance says it has a great coconut note. But then it smells like absolute sunscreen I wish coconut smelled more like coconut and not sunscreen I don’t know why everyone thinks sunscreen equals coconut or coconut equals sunscreen. It does not coconut is fresh sweet delicious effervescent on its own sunscreen is the total opposite in my opinion. Perfect coconut milk sounds like exactly that perfect coconut would be beyond excited to receive a bottle.

  • I’d be interested in trying Maui. Going from the coconut to sandlewood sounds like it would be great.

  • ramsesperez52 says:

Beach Geeze Coco Moon is my favorite out of the 3 and the one I’d like to win if I was so lucky. I love creamy coconut fragrances myself and I’m going away soon on vacation, this would be the perfect fragrance to the vacation. A coconut/pineapple mix is always well appreciated, unlike smelling like sunscreen. Cheers from NJ, USA

  • katherinecolett says:

So excited to learn of these fragrances! I would adore any of them! Love coconut as a note in virtually everything!

  • I would love to win Beach Geeza Coco Moon. Michelyn’s review was very informative and Steven’s video review was really professionally made and helpful. I live in Trzebnica, Polamd, EU. I am a follower on Instagram. Nick: insztagramekphoto

  • FragranceIsMe says:

Thank you Michelyn and Steven for your in-depth reviews. I have not had the chance to get my nose on any of these creations. However, I do look forward to the experience. While I find all 3 to be appealing, the one that intrigues me the most would have to be Coco Moon by Beach Geeza because of the note breakdown – not typical but sounds so good.
Thank you for this wonderful opportunity.

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

Because I love tuberose and when I see a tuberose I want it, my pick is Beach Geeza Coco Moon.
I want to feel notes of natural tuberose with jasmine in an exotic summer cocktail full of sensuality. I am from EU

  • I loved that, in addition to Michelyn’s personal introduction and impressions about the fragrances, we also had a quote from the respective perfumers regarding their intentions and results when they created them. Makes the artists AND their perfumes much more relatable to!

Steven has also given us extremely detailed and interesting descriptions about the three: Coco Moon – bright and saccharine, with freshness from the pineapple and an earthy undertone from the oakmoss; Maui – creamy and woody, which results in a very natural smelling fragrance; Perfect Coconut Milk – very popular, with a wonderful vanillic lactonic texture, and what a bottle!! All three performing wonderfully well.

I would love to win Beech Geeza Coco Moon, to transport me back to holidays, sipping an icy Pina Colada on the seashore.

    From the EU.

  • I really like Ryan’s description of Coco Moon with the oakmoss, cedar and tuberose which clearly differentiate the perfume from the sun screen lotion type of perfumes. And Redolessence brings up the earthy drydown and the nice combination of pineapple with coconut. This perfume must be so gooood!
Thanks for the chance to win Coco Moon, I’m in the EU.

  • genmartini says:

To be honest, a saccharine pineapple doesn’t sound appealing, but I’m always open to new perfume experiences and Steven says it’s beautiful so…. perhaps? To my nose, gorse/furze smells like coconut, so I enjoy Lush Gorillas Perfume Fruze perfume as a ‘coconutty’ scent. Also, Palmer’s coconut body cream layered under the fragrance I’m wearing in the summer gives a nice creamy richness. ~ Canada

  • Ooh, I love coconut, but if I want to smell like sunscreen, I’ll just put some on. I will try all three of these if I don’t win. First I would like Maui, then Perfect Coconut Milk, then Beach Geeza. I have not seen any of Stephen’s videos but I’m following him now. Michelyn includes not just the additional notes but how they make you feel, or where they make you feel you are. Thank you as ever for the reviews and the samples. I’m in the US.

  • Great introduction by Michelyn and video by Stephen.
Since both thought the Maui smelled really realistic using natural coconut (did not know that existed!) and sandalwood
Maui by DSH perfumes is my first choice or Sarah Horwitz Parfums Perfect Coconut Milk.

  • AleksCipri says:

I am a big fan of coconut scents sun tan lotion version or the that are not, like the there mentioned in this list. I tested Coco moon a while back and I was not a huge fan. The whole brand is great but somehow a bit to powerful for me. On the other hand DSH I love. and I agree she is one of the most amazing American perfumers. Sara is also amazing and I was actually thinking about getting Perfect coconut Milk. Out of these two choices I am interested in both Maui and Perfect coconut milk (Maui is my first choice). I enjoyed Steven descriptions as well as reading what here what was the inspiration for these perfumes. Maui sounds the best for me because of the coconut and sandalwood combo without any suntan lotion wipes. I’m from Illinois US.

  • From the written portion I learned a bit of the origin of the Beach Geeza name. From the video I found out about the use of coconut pulp co2 in the DSH offering of Maui. If chosen to win I’d like the Coco Moon. US

  • Beach Geeza Coco Moon sounds very intriguing from Steven’s words and Michelyn’s article! The coconut mixed with tuberose should make this a VERY nice scent <3
    Greetings from Romania, EU!

  • Oh boy! such a difficult choice! All sound so tempting. But I think the pineapple of Beach Geeza Coco Moon clinches it. I miss my beloved Ananas Fizz. RIP

Michelyn’s description and quirky origin story of the name, and Steven’s description of creamy lushness, evoke our recent holiday on the lush, laid back, tropical island paradise of Kauai. I long to go back.

Thank you for the reviews! It would be thrilling to receive the Beach Geeza Coco Moon.

  • Great video and great article.
I love the fact that none of the 3 fragrances smell like sunscreen.
All 3 sound amazing, beautiful and delicious.
I think that Coco moon is more unique and I like it, love the idea of using tuberose for its piña colada accord, and it’s earthy base sounds super sexy. I really want to try it.
    Thank you, from Mexico.

  • This is a tough one. Coconut screams summer and the descriptions from both Michelyn and Steven make me want to try all of these. Since that’s not an option, I have to go with Coco Moon because of the added earthy note – it just sounds so appealing to me.

  • BigMickyD says:

Fantastic reviews by both Michelyn and Steven, leaving me enticed by these 3 fragrances. Coco Moon has got me the most excited, however, so that is the one I would like to receive should I win. Thank you. I live in Sweden, EU.

  • I appreciate all three selections utilizing coconut as a note and avoiding the sunscreen scent. Coco Moon seems lovely with the addition of natural tuberose and pina colada notes and a vanilla, wood and oakmoss base. I’m also interested in Sarah Horowitz Thran’s Perfect Coconut Milk. The combination of coconut with gardenia. orange blossoms and almond sounds dreamy. I would be happy with either. I’m in the US.

  • As Michelyn, I am always afraid to smell like sunscreen even I adore coconut and I crave for coconut cream in the kitchen. Regarding that is interesting what DSH says that is not related to have both coconut and sunscreen but is an aesthetic decision to tropical summer vibes touch. Ryan Hunts also run from the coco sunscreen with tuberose and piña colada sunscreen. Steven mentions that Ryan uses pineapple, oakmoss and cedar (nice earthy facets in the drydown). Maui by DSH stands out as the most natural coconut fragrance with a lovely creaminess . Ms. Harowitz goes to the rich coconut milk vibe. All of the have a great longevity: nice performances! Beach Geeza Coco Moon will be my choice. I live in Spain, EU

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’m very interested to try all three of these fragrances-they all seem to be interesting, high-quality coconut-prominent fragrances. I’m especially interested in trying “Coco Moon” because of its fixatives, its creamy fruitiness, and its earthy base. In “Perfect Coconut Milk”, I like to hear about the accord which “captures the tropical florals that grow rampant in the pacific islands”. In “Maui”, I like to hear about the ingredients which are used to make a realistic coconut scent. All three fragrances, though, sound enjoyable to me. If I win, then I’d choose “Coco Moon” as my first choice, “Perfect Coconut Milk” as my second choice, and “Maui” as my third choice. I live in the U.S.A. Thanks for the chance to win one of these fragrances. I follow @cafleurebonoffical on Instagram from @regismonkton

  • Oh boy, fantastic review by both goats Michelyn and Steven.
I love coconut based perfumes, specially for summer ocassions.
I love that them 3 are artisan perfumers and they all offer great qualities.
Even I love them 3 and would love to win any of them, if I had to choose from 1 I think I would pick Maui or Perfect Coconut Milk. Those 2 blew my mind with their descriptions and the notes they use. Would be so happy to win any of them.

“It’s challenging to find a coconut perfume that doesn’t smell like sunscreen.”

There are many coconut fragrances not smelling like a sunscreen, I like them all . It doesn’t have to be a gourmand, but coconut and sweet notes do work well for me.
☆DSH Perfumes Maui (Dawn Spencer Hurwitz)
Natural smelling coconut and Hawaiian sandalwood fragrance.
☆Beach Geeza Coco Moon (Ryan Hunts):
“That’s it! Beach Geeza! That’s you Man!”
Exactly the same thing happened with me, when I decided to name my bakery .
Coco Moon intro and Steven’s take made me think of making and eating Coconut and Pineapple Cake .
☆Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfect Coconut Milk (Sarah Horowitz Thran):
More greener coconut, orange blossom and a jungle behind.
Beach Geeza Coco Moon would be great, because of Ryan Hunt telling us how he named his brand, and Coconut and Pineapple Cake connection i made .
Appreciate the detailed introduction, the reviews , and the giveaway campaign

I’m interested in coconut fragrances not smelling like sunscreen.
-DSH Perfumes Maui (Dawn Spencer Hurwitz)
Reading about the sunscreen note ,and how it’s more of a aesthetic choice was interesting.
-Beach Geeza Coco Moon (Ryan Hunts)
I like Ryan Hunts seeking for originality , Coco Moon is tropical and woody. Like him , I like working with clients, who also look for originality too , Ryan is making bespoke fragrances, and i make bespoke suits
-Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfect Coconut Milk (Sarah Horowitz Thran):
    Coconut in a jungle?
Beach Geeza Coco Moon is the fragrance i’d like to win the most
Thank you Ryan, Michelyn , Steven , Dawn Spencer Hurwitz and Sarah Horowitz Thran

  • I loved the focus of this co-curated list as I also adore the coconut note but tend to steer clear of the overly sunscreen-y effect common in coconut-based fragrances, so these scents are exactly what I’m looking for in the summer. Coconut has diverse and intriguing facets and I appreciate that Michelyn and Steven explored a number of them, from fleshy and lactonic, to sweet and tropical, to earthy and green. I’d love to win Coco Moon or Perfect Coconut Milk! I’m located in New York, in the US.

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Michelyn’s written review and Steven’s video review of Coconut Perfumes that don’t smell like sunscreen. I’ve heard so many great things about Beech Geeza Coco Moon with a realistic combo of a fleshy coconut and juicy pineapple with that woody and earthy drydown and amazing performance. DSH Maui sounds amazing with that coconut co2 pulp note that sounds magnificent. Sarah Horowitz Perfect Coconut Milk sounds absolutely perfect with that realistic smell of coconut milk. I follow Instagram page @cafleurebonoffical my page is @michaelprincefragrance I am from the USA. If I win I would choose.

    1. Beach Geeza Coco Moon
    2. DSH Perfumes Maui
    3. Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfect Coconut Milk
    3.

  • It takes high level of imaginativeness to be able to create a quality coconut fragrance , that won’t remind you and your customers to sunscreen. The 3 noses look for sophistication is admirable.
I do believe Coco Moon from Beach Geeza is sweet, and topical , with a seductive white flowers , a treat I’d love to win
    Thanks for the draw

  • I qualify only for Beach Geeza Coco Moon (Europe reader), but I like the idea of the ultimate beach holiday fragrance so I am sure that Coco Moon is something to be easily enjoyed by the wearer and those around the wearer. Thank you.

  • Phillip_Barkley says:

    Greetings everyone
All DSH Perfumes Maui , Beach Geeza Coco Moon and Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfect Coconut Milk are appealing to me for a different reasons , Maui for the coconut pulp co2 , Sandalwood from Hawaii and Mr Gavrielatos calling it fleshy, Coco Moon for the the earthy conclusion with pineapple and coconut, and Coconut Milk more green and skin glowing in the sun approach.
Every fragrance recommended by Ms Camen and Mr Gavrielatos is great, I’m certain, still Beach Geeza Coco Moon I’d like to win the most
Thank you, American living in Paris France

  • WaltherP99 says:

I’ll share my thoughts on the fragrances, and compare my thoughts with what Steven and Michelyn are getting, starting with the way Steven showed them in his video.
    1. Beach Geeza Coco Moon , composed by Ryan Hunts
I’m familiar with Beach Geeza fragrances, and if I have to rate my favorite ones:
    1. Cocoa Moon EDP
    2. Coco Moon EDP
    3. Bay Rum EDP
People should be aware of the fact all of Ryan Hunts fragrances do have EDP and EDT versions, and that there are differences , it’s not just concentration and performance, the scent profiles are tweaked , similar , but definitely not the same.
Coco Moon EDP to me is not a coconut gourmand, yes there’s sweetness, but the it also gets really woody in the base, the cedar is quite dominant.
In my opinion people should buy both sample sets , the EDP’s and EDT’s , and choose wisely.
    2. DSH Perfumes Maui , composed by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz
Unfortunately because of my really dry skin I just can’t wear her beautiful fragrances 🙁
    3. Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfect Coconut Milk
Honestly when I saw Sarah’s picture , and the coconut topic I was expecting you’ll discuss
Life’s A Beach, in my opinion superior fragrance to Coconut Milk.
Coco Moon EDP would be great. All profiles I already follow, including @thatguyryanhunts , @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

  • I like how Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, Ryan Hunts and Sarah Horowitz Thran took their time to perfect the 3 original coconut fragrances. It shows high level of dedication and self-expectation .

    “That you like piña coladas
And gettin’ caught in the rain
And the feel of the ocean
    And the taste of champagne
If you like making love at midnight
In the dunes on the cape
You’re the lady I’ve looked for
    Come with me and escape”

It couldn’t be just me who started singing ,right?
From Coco Moon I’m expecting Piña Colada in a bottle, and to be caught in the rain by the smell. What strikes me the most is rather unusual mixture of gourmand, floral and earthy notes. Winning Coco Moon would make me happy
    Thank you for the opportunity
    USA

  • After watching the reviews of these fragrances by Steven and reading the review the choice if I should win would love Beach Geeza Coco Moon! Thanks for the opportunity to win.
Greetings and gratitude from the USA.

  • Stephen mentions an oak moss base to Coco Moon – I’m intrigued, and I love the brand name and its origin, in Michelyn”s article. And the sound of a tropical drink by the beach! I’m in the EU.

  • Not only is this a fun list of coconut perfumes, I also like that you highlighted artisan perfumers, all three of which have made a favorite of mine. Reading Dawn’s quote, I learned that the “typical sunscreen note” is included just to identify the product as sunscreen, and that perfumers emulate that smell accordingly. A “tropical vacation without the sunscreen scent” sounds wonderful. Ryan’s take on Coco Moon was interesting too; I’ll smell for the oakmoss and cedar base accord next time I wear it. I haven’t tried Perfect Coconut Milk, but I found Sarah’s breakdown of how she composed the fragrance to be very detailed, deconstructing the intent behind each note. I can visualize the scene she describes. Steven did a good job of comparing all three of these to the big sunscreen-smelling perfumes we associate with coconut, and why these are such wonderful alternatives. He caught my attention by raving about how natural the coconut smells in DSH Maui and the rich complexity of Perfect Coconut Milk. Fun post!

I’m in the USA. I follow @cafleurebonoffical on Instragram as @mmerline. If I were to win this giveaway, my choice would be Perfect Coconut Milk, but I’d love to win all three. Thanks!

  • I love all 3 of the fragrances reviewed! But I’d choose either Maui or Perfect Coconut Milk.

And finding the perfect coconut fragrance IS very difficult. I am not a fan of that “sunscreen” note. I want it to be milky and beachy, and the 3 you’ve described fit that perfectly!

    I live in the US.
