Azman Where We Used to Live Review (Euan McCall )2022 + Gateway to Memories Giveaway

Azman Where We Used To Live

Creative Director and founder Husen Baba of Azman Perfumes is constantly looking for the most forward-thinking olfactive artists to collaborate with and for Azman Where We Used To Live, he  enlisted Edinburgh-based star perfumer Euan McCall (Jorum Studio for his own brand and Jorum Laboratories for his work for others) to create what is in my opinion, one of the most intriguing fragrances of 2022. It is also one of the trickiest to describe.  Without further ado then, let us delve into this tantalising and complex perfume.

Nostalgia (noun) is described as a sentimental longing or wistful affection for a period in the past.  When referencing nostalgia one may make a comparison to the vintage, old-school, time gone by.  Fragrances with such a theme can be placed firmly in a room 101, locked away and revisited purely for their schmaltzy value.  Azman Where We Used To Live turns this notion on its head.  It is a difficult scent to pin down and place in a specific genre.  Nostalgia here is experienced via the use of heliotrope. However, it is utilised in a thoroughly inventive way.  One can envisage this fragrance as a transition from earth into space, the place “Where We Used To Live”.

Heliotrope is one of the most universally nostalgic materials, I think. It is also very versatile. I didn’t want to take the Heliotrope sensation in a traditional sweet-powdery direction”. -Euan McCall Exclusive quote for ÇaFleureBon

This heliotrope sensation is a dense and dramatic sheer juxtaposition, which creates a silken veil that is special, slightly carnal and most addictive.  Azman Where We Used To Live calls upon vivid memories seen through the lens of the mind’s eye.  It is a perfume to evoke happiness and creates a kaleidoscopic theme with layers upon layers of decadent and dreamlike touches.  One enters the wearing with a blast of transparent white florals which orbit the heliotrope pulsing out jasmine, magnolia and orange flower.  It emits a sultry sweet undercurrent which lies underneath white clouds, here we can delve into blackcurrant bud absolute, honeysuckle and rose.  The heliotrope acts as the gate to access your deepest thoughts, times that ignite the best of memories, be that a sticky first kiss, a euphoric festival with friends or sunsets in far away lands.

The Azman line explores traditional Middle Eastern perfumery traditions with a new-age sensibility, Oud plays a crucial role as a bridging sensation. With Where We Used To Live, the Oud oil needed to homogenise within the formula so as to create a novel Oud sensation, one that can be easily perceived by the wearer if they look for it but it was important that Where We Used To Live didn’t register as overly oud-y or tired – we didn’t want a stereotypical Oud motif to override the perfume.” -Euan McCall  exclusive quote for ÇaFleureBon

The scent feels incredibly modern in its composition, initially beaming out tropical bright accents and a translucent osmanthus absolute.  As it transitions, Where We Used To Live explores spicy saffron and Assam Oud.  This is unexpected because one must search for the depth of the oud as it melts effortlessly in and creates a bridging sensation as opposed to a slap in the face harsh tonality.  This unique sensation places Azman Where We Used To Live firmly in the new age of perfumery bracket.  The collaboration between Mr. McCall and Mr. Baba is of mavericks pushing barriers and subverting the norm.

There is a powdery almost stardust experience about this scent, it smells cosmic to me. This is no classical reinterpretation.  It feels almost futuristic with a sci-fi profile.  The oud can be perceived as the bridge a dark silhouette against the heliotrope and florals a luminous matter, almost as if one were in the vastness of space and encountering an indistinct bright patch of light such as a cloud of dust.  This is how the heliotrope and oud interplay in my mind.  It is a risky scent.  I think those who love it will truly adore it.  However, it might be too much for others.  Should you wish to venture forth and unlock your memories and find a gateway to new horizons then Where We Used To Live could be the scent for you.

Top: Honeysuckle – Magnolia – Blackcurrant bud Absolute

  • I find the rich and beautiful notes of this unique fragrance the most interesting. I live in Poland, EU.

I have read with great interest all your articles about Azman Perfumes, and I am now extremely intrigued by this brand, for its effort to bring contemporary feelings to classic middle eastern perfumery. This particular perfume seems to elude any effort in classifying it, in closing it into a box, into a unique definition, therefore it has really sparkled my interest. The notes sound amazing and the evocative name speaks for itself… Thank you Karl for this wonderful review! Greetings from Italy

  • It seems to be all about a new way depictting cosmos these days, Azman’s Where We Used To Live may unfold another kind of perception, great giveaway .From Romania with love!

  • Karl!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Most excellent review!!! I love how you so eloquently describe the innovative methods & structure of this scent!! Where We Used to Live is the only new AZMAN fragrance I have yet to sample! Absolute Must-Try!!!! ❤️ Thank you for bringing this to my attention! Exciting & Fascinating! Bravo! I would love to win this bottle; thank you for the opportunity! ❤️ USA

  • Love the name of this Fragrance. The notes were described so well. I definitely want to try this. Thank you for this Chance USA

  • This seems to be such a beautiful interpretation of nostalgia. With dreamlike like touch of powdery heliotrope, luminous flower and oud to broaden the horizon: Karl review and words are so tender and poetic, and I’m always intrigued about Euan McCall creations. From EU- France.

  • I like the mix between classical perfumery and a modern touch. Using heliotrope without the classical interpretation. Adding oud and saffron without overpowering the composition is an excellent transition. I think this is new and interesting composition. I live in USA

  • This perfume sounds amazing from the base of the notes. It could be a very optimistic smelling fragrance. I very like the review also. Than you for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • Azman Where We Used to Live looks like an intriguing scent. It is complex to describe and it is an interpretation of classical fragrances. It is only apt it employs one of the notes commonly found in classic fragrances, i.e. heliotrope. I am in US.

  • All those flower notes and oud too?!?!! Sounds very unisexy to me. I like the idea of a “cosmic” fragrance. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff. Mich USA

  • Trinity33 says:

How exciting that Azman is doing a collaboration with Euan McCall. I’ve sampled a few of his fragrances (Arborist, Phloem) and he is a brilliant composer with a unique sensibility. Where We Used To Live is a great name and the note list sounds innovative and rich. The heliotrope-oud combo is intriguing. I would love to try this! MD, USA.

  • Karl- your review really captures Where We Used To Live’s beauty, modernity and addictiveness.
    Especially succinct are:
-“one of the trickiest to describe”
    -“tantalising and complex perfume”
-“difficult scent to pin down and place in a specific genre”
    -“a thoroughly inventive way”
    -“incredibly modern in its composition”

    I could go on…
    Well done!

  • AleksCipri says:

Azman is one of the most exciting and amazing brands I discovered recently. I ordered samples of all of their fragrances (not this one, it as not yet available) and I was just blown away by them. They are very challenging, but so so good, so complex, well blended, the epitome of “niche”. With that being my Azman impression, Karl’s review has made me so excited to try this one! What makes me the most interested is to see their futuristic interpretation of heliotrope. I love this note and yes it is very nostalgic even though I cannot explain it to my self why. I often think of this, yet the explanation eludes me. Where we used to live being an Azman fragrance has for sure brought something completely new to heliotrope fragrance, which is exactly what I get from Karl’s impressions. Cannot wait to try it! I’m from Illinois, US.

  • I really enjoyed reading this review! Azman Where We Used to Live sounds very unique and certainly like nothing I’ve tried before, yet the nostalgic part may still draw connections. I loved this part of Karl’s piece, “There is a powdery almost stardust experience about this scent, it smells cosmic to me. This is how the heliotrope and oud interplay in my mind.” Thanks for the generous draw, from the U.S.

  • Thanks for such an interesting review. This perfume house AZMAN is amazing. My friend is visiting UAE next week and at my request, he’ll
buy AZMAN Where We Used To Live, Riad Jasmine, & Song For a Wanderer.
    Love from Pakistan

  • That image you started this review with perfectly matches your description of the scent. It makes me a bit nervous and I am not sure I will feel happy in that space. But I know I trust Euan McCall and his amazing balancing skills. So I’d love to win this to Germany, thank you for the draw!

  • I would love for a fragrance to “unlock (my) memories” and help me “find a gateway to new horizons!” NV, USA.

  • Laurentiu says:

I really like the names for the perfumes from this house. Song for A Wanderer, I am Darkness, Two Minutes After the Kiss and now Where We Used to Live. I am not much of a guy who looks into descriptions, but I must admit that the names are really catchy.
    Thank you from the EU!

  • Very nice review Karl! Stating from the start that Azman Where We Used To Live is one of the most intriguing fragrances of the year and really difficult to describe is not an easy thing to say. I think that nostalgia is a negative emotion, it makes you live in the past and not be in the present. Nostalgia is thinking that the past time was better. But can be positive if you transform it into inspiration to move forward. I think that the great Euan McCall does the latter: as Karl says the scent unlocks your memories and find a gateway to new horizons, futuristic. We need that in Perfumery. And smelling great, of course. Here the Heliothrope with his warm delicate powdery floral with vanilla and marzipan notes makes the trick without being not so powdery and not so sweet. It is carnal and addictive being surrounded with the tropical osmanthus, the spicy saffron and the magic Assam Oud ( not overly or tiring here). Karl says it is going to be a polarizing perfume! Great! Let´s try and see where each one of us stand! I live in Spain, EU.

  • Azman How we used to live sounds like the type of nostalgia you experience when thinking about the great times you had last summer. Sound like thinking of summer in the midst of winter.
I love the photos, compositions that Karl created for this review.
    I’m in eu

  • Your review made me think of the move Stardust. I would be really interested to try a futuristic sci fi fragrance. Thank you for the review, writing from the EU.

  • Loved the description of Nostalgia. From Azman, Riad Jasmine is one of my favorites. I would love to experience nostalgia through where we used to live. From EU.

  • The oud can be perceived as the bridge a dark silhouette against the heliotrope and florals a luminous matter, almost as if one were in the vastness of space and encountering an indistinct bright patch of light such as a cloud of dust.

Heart: Heliotrope – Jasmine – Orange Flower – Rose – Saffron – Osmanthus Absolute
Base: Assam Oud – Patchouli – Vetiver – Musk – Vanilla – Cypriol. I am intrigued by the notes especially Patchouli, Rose and Oud being my favourite notes in perfumery. What stood out was the use of heliotrope and how all the other notes compliment each other. I would love to smell this on skin. Thanks a million from the UK

  • think those who love it will truly adore it. However, it might be too much for others. Should you wish to venture forth and unlock your memories and find a gateway to new horizons then Where We Used To Live could be the scent for you.

  • I love the Sci-Fi theme of this perfume! Also the new and creative use of both oud and heliotrope. It sounds very intriguing and a must smell experience. I’m in the US, thank you for the draw.

  • NituNicolae says:

A “cosmic” fragrance would probably smell like absolutely nothing. Jokes aside, this was a very fun read, and Where we used to live I am sure is a polarizing scent that I can’t wait to try! EU

  • I love saffron notes and this one sounds totally different than the others I’ve tried. The tropical aspects set against the spice sound delicious. I’m also partial to powder, so that “powdery almost stardust experience” is very appealing. I am from USA.

  • Assam oud can be pretty strong so what I like from Karl’s review is that the oud used in Azman Where We Used To Live is more as a bridge against other floral and heliotrope scents. It is a risky scent per Karl, as most oud (especially Indian/Assam oud) perfumes are, but given that I love oud in all its variations, I think I will love Azman Where We Used To Live. Thanks for the review and draw. From the USA.

  • I love Euan McCall’s unique takes on perfumery, and I own and love a number of Jorum Studio scents. So interested to see what he can do with heliotrope to make it modern and new age and also his own. I live MN, USA.

  • olgAPOISON says:

  • realtyisme says:

While it appears this creation by Azman is a challenge to fully explain its olfactive characteristics, I believe Karl has done a great job and has brought me to the edge…as far as one can go, without actually smelling this creation. His review is nudging me to dive into this experience…creating a strong desire to envelop myself in this fragrance. I get it. I currently own Azman, I Am Darkness. It is a very alluring creation and one of my favorite fragrances in my entire collection. Husen Baba, the Founder and Creative Director for Azman, has built a quality fragrance house and it shows! ….from the initial presentation of the packaging through to the perfume, itself. I look forward to getting my nose on the rest of this house’s creations. I live in the US.

  • I love Euan McCall’s work. Karl’s description of the scent as cosmic/futuristic/sci-fi, alongside the poignant name and nostalgic marketing, makes me incredibly intrigued. I live in New York, USA.

  • thee_boy_wonder says:

I love the description of how oud interacts in this fragrance! I find that out can be a challenge, but from this review I am so intrigued! Also I love the note breakdown, this sounds like a receipt for success!

Honeysuckle, heliotrope, rose and white flowers sound like a great combo. I also love the name!
    Thank you!

  • patrick_348 says:

I loved Karl’s description of how McCall uses the heliotrope note, which makes me want to sample this. He describes the scent as a whole as “incredibly modern” and “futuristic,” yet the mood of the scent is one of sweetness and nostalgia. This sounds incredibly interesting because at first glance the concepts seem contradictory. I live in the US, in North Carolina.

  • Thanks for this interesting article Karl!

What an interesting fragrance Where We Used To Live must be!
I’ve sampled some of Jorum Studio’s beautiful Scottish natural perfumery and am eager to try the highly rated Azman perfumes.
A combination of the creative minds of Euan and Husen must be an amazing spectacle I cannot wait to try!

I would love to venture forth and unlock my memories to find a gateway to new horizons!

    Greetings from the UK!

  • I’m familiar with Azman perfumes, and love their take on oud. I’m curious how heliotrope and oud interplay in this one.

I live in Portugal, and I’d be thrilled to win a bottle of “Where We Used To Live”.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’ve been wanting to try Jorum Studio’s collected works, and because Azman is using Euan McCall as a perfumer, it only causes me to want to try McCall’s work more than before. In regards to this fragrance, I’m very interested to try it. I want to see how McCall uses the ingredients for it. Karl caused me to be intrigued to try it when he says that it is futuristic and incredibly modern. I don’t mind trying another fragrance which includes oud, rose, and saffron, especially when it includes the other highlighted notes, e.g. the blackcurrant bud absolute, the honeysuckle, the heliotrope. I live in the U.S.A.

  • I love Middle Eastern perfumery and am always intrigued by difficult-to-describe fragrances, so Karl’s review made me want experience Where We Used to Live. I live in Oklahoma, USA. Thanks, as always, for the draw!

  • Cosmic!!! With the darkness of Oud. I am a risk taker in many ways, and this one sounds right up my risky alley. Exploring Where We Used To Live is a risk I am willing to take. I am in the USA. BTW, great interpretation of your experience of this one, Karl. As it happens, I am a fan of Euan McCall’s too.

  • This Azman house sounds more and more intriguing each time I read about them. I like their choice in notes as they are mostly different from the rest of the crowd, and I can appreciate that. Their choice of flowers with the oud I find the most appealing. Thank you as always for the giveaway it’s so very kind of you!

  • ” most intriguing fragrance of 2022″ sounds like a huge shoe to fill. According to this review, this fragrance is complex, difficult scent to pin down and to place in a specific genre. Carnal, most addictive, with floral and oud notes that is modern, and barrier pushing.

I got confused reading this review at first b/c I saw Euan McCall’s name and think of him with his brand Jorum. Seems like magnolia is having a moment, isn’t it? Saffron and oud sound like a heavenly combination. Thank you Karl for this review! (I am allergic to magnolia so I am not interested in the giveaway.)

Karl Topham take on AZMAN Where We Used To Live made me think of making Almond Cake with Cassis Ganache , and later on sharing it with my girlfriend, sitting next to Al Qudra Lake in Dubai, and waiting for the sunset , while the smell of burning oud is also lingering in the air.

Where We Used to Live–what a fantastic name for a fragrance! I love the idea of the bridging sensations, from the white flowers and heliotrope to the base note oud. It sounds risky, indeed. Karl’s review made me think of science fiction, happy memories and new horizons.

Oh heavens and space, Where We Used To Live totally sounds like THE scent for me! Very grateful to Karl for his truly cosmic review. A perfume made by two mavericks who push boundaries and turn norms on their heads, with oud designed to bridge, connect and spice up rather than to shine, and heliotrope which is powdery and dreamy rather than overly sweet and in or way stereotypical… I am ready and willing to venture forth and unlock your memories and find a gateway to new horizons :). Where We Used To Live sounds like the best companion for the milky way high up there…

  • This sounds so beautiful with the heliotrope osmanthus and evokes a dreamy quality. However the oud mingling with all those soft transparent florals, I can’t wait to see how that plays out too! I do like oud but am always interested in seeing how it can be used in new ways.

Top notch review, I really enjoyed reading Karl Topham thoughts , and I have to say I fully,…well at least almost agree with him.
Where We Used to Live is a fragrance that even if you have long years of experience with niche, and indie perfumery , it’s still not easy to find a way to categorize it.
It’s not for everybody, that’s for sure. What I get is mostly saffron based fragrance , and also reminded me of the rose potpourri , and if you put a lot of saffron on it , spill a cup of cassis juice, and a spoon of honey, and leave it to dry

What I found interesting about Karl’s review of Azman Where We Used to Live is how Azman perfumes has modern stylings to middle eastern fragrances. Where We Used to Live has the traditional Rose, Oud, and Saffron but also a fruity Osmanthus and powdery Heliotrope and floral touches that sound truly delightful. I am from the USA.

  • I don’t associate the smell of heliotrope with nostalgia, but my experience with classic perfumery is basically nonexistent. Still, there’s a lot about Where We Used to Live that’s intriguing, including a juxtaposition of tropical florals against saffron and oud and magnolia paired with blackcurrant bud. Karl pointed out this is a risky scent, and I’d love to find out on which side of the love it or hate it line I fall. Also, CaFleureBon has had many kind words to say about Azman perfumes; I hope to finally try the brand soon.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

Thank you for the great review Karl.

Azman Where We Used to Love sounds such a crazy beautiful fragrance. I love the dichotomy between the nostalgia that the heliotrope brings with the the uncertainty and unfamiliarity of the oud base.

I’ve been following this brand closely and love what they are bringing to the table.

    Cheers from WI, USA
