I love chocolate; the dark, the white, the milky, spiced, fruited, peppered, and yes, of course even bitter raw and bakers chocolate. But despite my passion for every concoction and quality of chocolate; I admit that I am a chocolate snob.

Whenever possible I prefer to indulge in chocolate products created from the Arriba Nacional Cacao, the prized native cacao trees of Ecuador and from the light colored pods of the Cacao Porcelana, an heirloom white Criolla cacao grown in Venezuela. Both of these rare varieties are noted for their creamy, rich and complex aromas and for the taste of their white, sweetly nutty pulp.

I love cacao-centric perfumes  as much as I love chocolate. There might be as many gorgeous, fragrant cacao gourmands as there are chocolates in a candy shop, but every now and then one of these beauties stands out from the crowd.  This fall my new chocolate perfume infatuation is the award winning Cacao Porcelana, designed and brought to life by Atelier Materi’s owner and creative director Véronique Le Bihan and perfumer Marie Hugentolber.

What is it about Atelier Materi Cacao Porcelana that distinguishes it from so many other cacao and chocolate-based perfumes?  What are the qualities that convinced the Pure Beauty Awards to honor Cacao Porcelana with their 2020 Silver Award for the Best New Niche Fragrance?  First, of course, it has to be the high quality chocolate experience, unmistakably the real thing; white porcelana criolla, sensual, smooth, bitter-sweet, vegetal and plump, without the opacity associated with lesser quality chocolate.  As the name implies, Cacao Porcelana is translucent and lustrous, a liquid representation of the precious white cacao. After the initial robust and fleshy opening, the heart of Cacao Porcelana pours into a fragile demitasse of cocoa, fortified with touches of rum and boozy davana, glazed with delicate, bright, dry nuances of immortelle.

As Atelier Materi Cacao Cacao Porcelana matures, floral hues of jasmine, accents of fruit and tobacco and the woody, mineral sweetness of Australian sandalwood are expertly cast against a deep, rich chocolaty background.  Over a period of eight hours a varnish of light patchouli and deep vanillac tonka bean cuddle ever closer to the skin, inextricably binding the senses of smell, taste and touch into one addictive multi-sensory chocolate experience. Atelier Materi Cacao Porcelana satisfies my craving for the finest cacao, pleasing and sating both palate and nose, providing a sugar (and fat) free relief for people like me, those of us who simply can’t get enough of the world’s best chocolate.

Notes:  White cacao, rum, immortelle, Indian jasmine, light tobacco, davana, patchouli, sandalwood and tonka bean.

Disclaimer:  I would like to thank Ann Bouterse of Indigo Perfumery for the quickly disappearing sample of Atelier Materi Cacao Porcelana. My opinions are my own.

  • What intrigued me most about Gail’s review was the description of the white porcelana criolla! It sounds very sweet and luscious 🙂 I have never heard of the brand before but I would love to be able to try this fragrance since I love gourmands and chocolate notes!

  • Linda Scott says:

I have never sampled anything from this brand before, but I’m a chocolate and cacao perfume lover. I used to default to Comptoir Sud Pacifique chocolate fragrances, and to The Exact Friction of the Stars by Pilar and Lucy — the richer and more enveloping, the better. I bought Chocolate Man by Dame Perfumery for my spouse and then of course I wore it like crazy.

Tonka bean, immortelle, and tobacco are favorite heady notes. I can’t wait to smell this one, whether I am a lucky winner or track down a sample directly instead.

Thank you to Ann Bouterse at Indigo Perfumery and to you too, for the generous draw.

  • I don’t know this brand but chocolate and immortelle!!!!!! We have a large immortelle bush in the front of our house and I love its maple syrup/herbally scent. Combined with chocolate sounds amazing. I love chocolate scents…Fresh had a chocolate and orange perfume that smelled like the baskin and Robbins ice cream

  • After discovering a chocolately chai tea last year, I’ve since come to the conclusion that nearly everything can be made better by adding a little chocolate. I’m no connoisseur like Gail, but can certainly distinguish a good quality chocolate from the gross milk variety used in mainstream candy these days. Certainly sounds like Veronique and Marie made the right choice, especially when pairing it with a side of rum and davana! Not to mention the Australian sandalwood… my mind races to one of my all-time favourite chocolatey floral sandalwoods – Santal Majuscule. Addictive is certainly the word. And a fitting cold weather cuddle scent! Curious about those fruity and tobacco-y accents, but if the chocolate is good enough for Gail, it’s hella good enough for me. Still working on that urban lingo. J’excuse MI, USA

  • I am always hesitant about chocolate perfumes thinking they are too sweet but Atelier Materi cacoa porcelana intrigued me because of the sandalwood and immortelle. I eat chocolate any kind any day. I have heard good things about this brand and I would like to try peau d ambrette so I see there is a discovery kit for $20.

  • chatoncharmant says:

Fleshy and vegetal is a YES. Tried cacao in Fazzolari’s Ummagumma recently and my nose was piqued! Chocolate is love and chocolate is life so my fingers are crossed here in WI state.

  • Marcus Grisham says:

I guess I’ve never given it much thought that there would be high quality cacao that would find it’s way to fragrances without selling for Roja prices. While half, or more, of my collection is gourmand, a good half of that has chocolate or cacao as a note. Needless to say, I love chocolate in fragrances. I’ve actually never put my nose on anything from Atelier, but Cacao Porcelana has my attention and I’d love to add it to my collection!

  • Like Gail, I am a bit of a chocolate snob and primarily enjoy high quality dark chocolate and cocoa. Her passionate description of this fragrance makes me think I’d really enjoy this one. I tend to prefer darker, richer cocoa notes to sweet chocolate fragrances, so I am very curious about it. I am in the Dallas area.

  • Loved your review, Gail. Thank you.

Cacao Porcelana is one of those perfumes that I love to create samples of. It is delicious, but not overly gourmand. On the dry side, yet you can sense the plumpness of the beans. The supporting notes deftly compliment the cacao.

  • I love dark 70+% chocolate. I’ve never heard of the Porcelana variety from Ecuador but I definitely want to seek it out. I haven’t had good luck with cocoa based fragrances since most seem too sweet and one dimensional. Gail’s description of Atelier Material Cacao Porcelana has convinced me this is a complex cacao scent especially with the addition of rum, davana and Australian sandalwood. I’ve previously sampled Santal Blond from this house. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • I’m interested in seeking out the chocolate products that Gail mentioned. I haven’t tried anything from Atelier Materi, but Cacao Porcelana sounds deliciously tempting. Thanks for the opportunity! Mich USA

  • Atelier Materi Cacao Porcelana seems like a true chocolatey fragrance with quite prominent cacao note. I am trying to think and I do not think I have smelled many perfumes with prominent cacao note though Gaultier Kokorico does come to mind. thanks for the generous draw. USA

  • Atelier Materi fragrances are available at Jovoy in Paris.
Cacao Porcelana I remember quite well smelling there. For the most part i do agree with Gail. Yes it’s bitter, just a bit vegetal and slightly boozy.
Sweetness disappears quickly, rum tones down too. What i get is powdery cocoa, lots of patchouli, sandalwood and tonka. Sweetness is barely there , if any at all , when Cacao Porcelana settles down . And if there’s sweetness at all it comes not from the cocoa/chocolate, but from the tonka bean.
Also midnight blue glass bottles , with concrete caps are more than eye catching. On the pictures on Cafleurebon the bottle looks almost black, it’s not , the pictures are edited, or it’s the lighting. Odd choice not to show the subscribers the true beauty of it’s midnight blue color. One of the best looking bottle ever.
    Cheers from VA

  • Daniel Fisher says:

I, too, love chocolate in its many, many forms. I love the whole cocoa bean, white flesh still attached, and then after it’s been alchemically reduced to magical chocolate… oh my. I love the play of jasmine, immortelle, patchouli and sandalwood. I think the accompaniment will work beautifully, like a Chocolate laden hug. Yummy.

  • I didn’t know this brand until now. I love chocolate centric fragrances! High-quality cacao fortified with touches of rum and booziness sounds so intriguing to me!

  • statikstepz says:

Hello, I live in Florida in the USA! I haven’t heard of the brand before, but I certainly would like to! I do love chocolate centric perfumes… I have two gourmand chocolate perfumes that I absolutely love (Insomnia, and Absolutio!). What intrigues me about the review is that this is such a great smelling gourmand chocolate scent, that it won the 2020 Pure Beauty Awards Silver Award for Best New Niche Fragrance! It MUST be something special! I love how this one focuses on White Cacao, then comes out the rum and boozy davana. Then as it dries down and develops, “floral hues of jasmine, accents of fruit and tobacco and the woody, mineral sweetness of Australian sandalwood are expertly cast against a deep, rich chocolaty background” with the sandalwood, patchouli and Tonka bean. Man if that description doesn’t sound warm and enticing, I don’t know what does!! All in all, this seems like it would be a world class scent and one that I would love to have the pleasure of winning! Thanks again for another great opportunity!!!

  • I’ve never tried a chocolate centric perfume and I am clearly no connoisseur of chocolate as is Gail. I’m only familiar with this brand from reading Ida’s review on this site. I’m curious as to what the blending of chocolate with the other notes will smell like. MAny thanks to Gail for a most interesting review and thanks to Indigo Perfumery for making this draw possible. I’m in the USA

  • I feel that there’s so many facets of cacao that don’t often get highlighted in scent, like the vegetal and bitter (as mentioned above). The review captured the complexities of the scent and of cacao very beautifully, I’m very curious to experience this. Based in USA.

  • Gabriel Garcia Leyva says:

Great review about the possibility of cacao paired with florals and the creamy au, sandalwood.
I must say that I love cocoa and its many flavors and nuances, this could be great!

  • What really intrigued me about Cacao Porcelana based on Gail’s review was that the notes of rich chocolate are fortified by the rum notes which honestly sound amazing. From all of the reviews I have read on Cafleurebon, this one intrigues me the most. I have never heard of this brand before but I am certainly interested in some of their other offerings too now. I do like chocolate centric perfumes, Tom Ford’s Noir de Noir is my favorite chocolate fragrance at the moment.

  • I love gourmand fragrances and chocolate is no exception. Even though chocolate oriented perfumes are not versatile, they are wonderful works of art. The only chocolate perfume I have ever owned was Chocolate Greedy by Montale, and it was absolutely lovely. I have never heard of this brand, but the white cocoa intrigues me and I am already optimistic that this fragrance will be extraordinary. Kind regards from Illinois, USA.

  • What intrigues me about this review is the mention of how high quality the chocolate is. Mainly im intrigued by the number of wonderful nuances and touches throughout making it not just a simple smell of chocolate but a fultifaceted fragrance with touches of things like rum, jasmine, fruit, tobacco, sandalwood, patchouli, and tonka. Really sounds amazing. I have heard of Atelier Materi and remember reading here about their Cuir d’Iris but havent tried any of their fragrances yet. I dont own any chocolate centric fragrances but have enjoyed the fragrances ive tried with chocolate in them. Thanks from CT USA for this generous draw.

  • What really struck me about Cacao Porcelana from on Gail’s review was that the notes of chocolate that are blended with notes of rum notes. It almost reminds me of tiramisu. This is the first time I have read about this house so I am not that familiar with this house. Chocolate centric fragrances are very pleasant but I do not have a favorite specific fragrance just yet. I live in Florida, US.

  • I didn’t know the brand Atelier Materi and this review signifies a new discovery for me, another brad I should definitely try. Reading the review, i could feel the taste of dark chocolate on the tip of my tongue and the bitter-sweet powdery cocoa smell. The fragrance sounds seductive, sexy and elegant, like a boudoir fragrance. CA, USA

  • I didn’t know about this brand before, but this sounds like the most awesome comforting amazing perfume! I’ve enjoyed Gail’s review from top to bottom and I really have to try this perfume…also I have to eat some chocolate now! I’m from Illinois, US.

  • I am intrigued by the chocolate notes along with jasmine. That sounds heavenly. I never knew there was a white chocolate called Porcelana. I am very excited to explore chocolate notes in perfume. The only fragrance I have tried with a chocolate note is Shihan by Piotr Czarnecki. It was so warm and invoked a safe feeling. I look forward to trying Cacao Porcelana.
    I live in the USA.

  • I love dark chocolate. By dark I mean 85%+. I have no problem eating 99%, but I haven’t encountered a cacao scent that speaks to me or appears as a scent version of dark chocolate. Thank you for the recommendation on Arriba Nacional as well! (US)

  • As a person who has just recently familiar with and accepting of cacao fragrances maybe its about time I add one to the collection. I’ve never heard of this rare Venezuelan white chocolate or the Ecuador chocolate either! Who knew there were so many types? Love learning from these articles! Iowa, USA

  • I love fragrances with cacao notes! The fruit and tobacco notes sound like it adds so many layers to it. I’d never heard of this line before. It is something I will put on my wishlist.
    I live in the USA.

  • Who could refuse some beautiful Cacao? Rather ingested or spritzed certainly not I. A bit of calorie-free indulgence is on my list for today.
Beautiful review Gail, engaging and tempting. Thanks to Ann of Indigo for her generosity. If you haven’t checked out her store you should, pure exquisiteness.

  • I definitely want to try this perfume. I don’t own any gourmand or chocolate/cacao perfumes but I’d like to start being familiar with them, especially the best of them. The one that’s mentioned in this review seems like a high-quality perfume that I’d truly like to own. I think that it’s interesting that this perfume was awarded as very high-ranking among new niche fragrances. It seems like it has good overall performance, and it seems like the scent of it is excellent. I’m glad to, at least, know about it. Gail’s review also helped me have a better understanding of cacao/chocolate and botany. I’m not sure if I’ve ever heard of this company before having read this review and I believe that I’ve never smelled a chocolate-centric perfume before. I hope to win the giveaway; I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • Thank you Gail for this intrigued review!
I like cacao in perfumery and if it sensual and smooth with jasmine touch and accents of fruit, tobacco, woods and sandalwood- it sounds my dream-perfume))
Unfortunately, I am not familiar with Atelier Materi perfumes.

  • This is amazing. I am not enough of a chocolate snob to know any of this information, but now I really want to smell this complex, sensual fragrance. I do not know this brand and I do love chocolate centric perfumes. I am in Kansas, USA.

  • I’ve tried Atelier Materi’s Cuir d’Iris as a sample, in general I don’t gravitate towards Iris perfumes but this one was very appealing and different from the one’s I’ve tried before, more deep and warm, definitely changed my opinion on Iris. I tend to also not gravitate towards cocoa forward scents, I’m interested to see how Materi approaches cocoa, and what extra depth/flair they choose to add to it. USA

  • wallygator88 says:

What a great review of a beautiful scent Gail. I love how this scent is able to highlight all the different notes without coming across as an edible item.

I have not smelt this brand before and I do enjoy chocolate centric perfumes.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • You had me at cacao and patchouli. I really enjoyed being walked through the opening and drydown. Thanks for the opportunity. USA

  • I’m traditionally trained in Paris Pastry Chef, under the great Pierre Herme. For those who don’t know, he’s wildly considered one of the top 5 Pastry Chefs and Chocolatiers in the world. I won’t comment the culinary part of Gail review.
Making and eating Chocolate Rum Cake is what i think right now, after reading the review. I do it for friends and take outs only, because at least in the state I’m living alcohol infused cakes are in the grey area. I can’t drizzle a cake with Rum , like Pastry Chefs are doing it it Europe, because here i need a license for selling alcohol.
    “one addictive multi-sensory chocolate experience”
I sure hope so, my standards are really high. Of course i like chocolate fragrances
Appreciate Gail review, and the giveaway campaign

  • Freedom of choice in life is essential, doesn’t matter if it’s clothes, perfumes, or overall styling. In this case we have freedom of having different perception. Not all , but most people associate chocolate fragrances, with either some Belgian chocolate, or a candy shop. Gail perception is different, leaning towards dark 95% chocolate.
Hopefully I’ll the rum and tobacco through the whole life of the fragrance, we’ll see.
No doubts about it, i love chocolate scents
Thanks to Gail , and Indigo Perfumery for the draw.

  • I did not know this brand before today and I like some chocolatey fragrances more than others. I’d like this one I believe because of the immortelle note for one and the rum note for two. US

  • I am not familiar with this perfume, but I’m especially intrigued by the way the cacao notes are described as “translucent”. I love that there are also notes of rum and vanilla, sounds beautiful. Thank you from Oregon, USA.

  • So beautiful ingredients in one perfume – cacao, sandalwood with woody and creamy aspects, smooth tonka beens, bright jasmine, patchouli – sound very yummy!
    Very interesting botyle.
I would like to test all Atelier de Materi perfumes and get this beauty too.
    US

  • Beautiful review, Gail!
I like cacao notes in perfumery, but if thay not so confectionery!
But with patchouli, woods – I know this perfume will be very interesting cacao perfume. Want to try.
I have read many good reviews about Atelier de Materi, but never tested any.
    US

  • I confess I have never tried chocolate centric perfumes, and I haven’t tried anything by Atelier Materi, yet. Being an award winner, Atelier Materi Cacao Porcelana definitely is worth checking out. Enjoyed the introductions to some high-quality South American chocolates by Gail. Thanks for the review and the generous draw. Writing from the USA.

  • I was struck by how Gail’s obvious appreciation and connoisseurship of chocolate was clearly so similar to her approach to fragrance, which made me feel her opinions super trustworthy. I have never owned a chocolate-centric perfume, so I don’t have a strong opinion about them, but I am eager to give it a shot! I am not familiar with the brand, but Gail’s description makes me want to be. My head spins just a little when I try to imagine the chocolate note balanced by immortelle, jasmine, rum, tobacco, and sandalwood.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

This sounds beyond amazing. There can never be enough chocolate in my world. Chocolate, jasmine, and tobacco? I’m sold. Also that bottle is beautiful. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Cacao Porcelana feels like a winner to me , different and exquisite. Slightly boozy dark
chocolate fragrance, best of the best. Everybody loves top quality chocolate fragrances .
Usually I’m not impressed by the look of the bottle, but I do admit I really like the colors, the cap . Well done
    Thanks, in US

  • Oh wow, this sounds amazing!! I’m not a chocolate snob, but I love anything to do with chocolate, including chocolate-centric fragrances. After reading this review, this is a MUST try fragrance for me. It’s interesting that it’s white chocolate. I think all of the chocolate fragrances I have tried are centered around milk chocolate, cocoa powder or dark chocolate. Thank you for this fantastic review, and for the generous giveaway! Located in the US.

  • Thank you Gail for an in-depth review of this chocolate-centric fragrance. I’m also a lover of white chocolate but have mostly eaten my chocolates rather than worn them but I can see how this would be so good to wear. I’ve heard mention of Atelier Materi in passing but have not tried any of their fragrances. I’m in USA

  • What strikes me about Cacao Porcelana
is of the way perfumer made chocolate and rum fragrance , whiteout making “something in the vain of” kind of fragrance.
A lot new fragrance including niche nowadays are nothing more than a washed up versions of already existing once on the market, with just a little bit of twist.
Sandalwood addition is always a plus.
I’m wearing chocolate fragrance right now , so ..
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • What intrigued me about the luscious notes of Procelana Criolla and descriptions of this amazing scent. “floral hues of jasmine, accents of fruit and tobacco and the woody, mineral sweetness of Australian sandalwood are expertly cast against a deep, rich chocolaty background. ” I have a sample of this beautiful scent and was thinking about a purchase. I love everything about it. Thank you for a chance to win. I love chocolate scents! Olympic orchids has a couple beauties too. California

  • zacharyari23 says:

I’ve only tried a handful of cacao fragrances, none of which were terribly appealing, to be quite honest. Of particular interest to me would be the creaminess of the porcelena cacao – the biggest turn off in other cacao fragrances is that opacity that Gail touched on. I am intrigued and definitely would try this fragrance, though I am unfamiliar with this brand.

  • Michael Prince says:

Gail, great review of Atelier Materi Cacao Porcelana. This fragrance uses white porcelana criolla a rare high quality cacao that comes from Venezuela. This is also is accented with rum, jasmine, and tobacco in the top and dries down to a dusty cacao and immortelle combination. This fragrance has one awards and for good reason. I have tried this fragrance before and I absolutely loved it. I am a huge fan of chocolate centric perfumes whether it be sweet chocolate or a dry and dusty cacao. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • Hashim Madani says:

Cacao Porcelana packs a lot of notes that I absolutely love in one fragrance; jasmine, fruity accords, tobacco, tonka bean, boozy notes, and that deep rich chocolate Gail describes sounds yummy. I’m not familiar with Atelier Materi but have a favorite opulent chocolate centric fragrance: The Merchant of Venice Rococo. VA, USA.

  • With so many new houses , market is overcrowded. I admire new brands like Atelier Material , who follow their own path , and don’t want to step in someone else’s shoes.
Presentation made me say “Wow” . The cap looks like it’s made of a concrete.
It’s like Véronique Le Bihan tolf Marie Hugentobler “I want gorgeous fragrances, but I’ll make sure we’ll also look awesome”
Cacao Porcelana feels classy and sophisticated , the way i like my chocolate fragrances.
Thanks to Indigo Perfumery, and to Gail of course

What interests ne the most is the fleshy opening ! I have been falling in love with davana and am cureous about it in this beautiful gourmand composition ! I have not tried this fragrance yet, but i love chocolate fragrances. I love chocolate fragrances so much that i am known by some as thr chocolate guy haha. This looks amazing and i hope you are all safe. Kudos to the writer of course too.

  • Since I own Atelier Materi sample set I’ll share my thoughts on the line. I do enjoy all , but one . Well made , interesting mix of classic and contemporary kind of brand.
To me there’s a tie for the best Atelier Materi, Cacao Porcelana and Santal Blond are both fantastic. Poivre Pomelo would be my third pick. Cacao Porcelana is exactly what Gail described it, dark chocolaty patchouli with mild boozy feel. If you like your chocolate dark with over 96% raw cacao , you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the smell.
Bought the sample set because of Ida’s review of Cuir D’Iris , but it’s the only one that didn’t work well for me.
Thanks to Gail, Cafleurebon and Indigo Perfumery. Just followed @veroniquelebihan , all others i already follow.

  • I’m also a big fan of cacao and chocolate based perfumes. This one sounds very different but so delectable with the white chocolate theme and the florals and woods sound like a beautiful pairing. I haven’t heard of this brand before and I’d like to give them a try. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Thank you to everyone for your interesting comments and for entering the draw. I can’t help
but think that the winner will be more than pleased with Cacao Porcelana. Please remember to check Cafleurebon for the announcement of the winner. By the way, this perfume is not so much a white chocolate fragrance as it is a recreation of the aromas and flavors of the dark chocolate created from the white-colored pods of the rare Criollo Porcelano Cacao trees. Yum!
