Astrophil and Stella IN EXTREMIS

“All works, no matter what or by whom painted, are nothing but bagatelles and childish trifles… unless they are made and painted from life, and there can be nothing… better than to follow nature.” –Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.

Astrophil & Stella IN EXTREMIS is a new release unveiled at Esxence in Milan. Conceived in Salsomaggiore by Meo Fusciuni, and has been the most anticipated fragrance for me to try so far this year. Imagine both my excitement and honour when I found out from Michelyn Camen (Editor-In-Chief) that I would be given the opportunity to review IN EXTREMIS.

The union of Caravaggio and Meo Fusciuni’s creativity blended in perfume form set my mind ablaze as I could not think of a more suitable subject for Meo Fusciuni’s mastery of combining natural ingredients in a natural and realistic way.

“In the midst of darkness that dances with light, a fragrance captures the essence of a genius who challenged his Time, turning contrasts and passions into eternal masterpieces. Astrophil and Stella IN EXTREMIS is dedicated to Caravaggio, observer of humanity, imperfect Master. A tribute to his art, a journey that delves into the depths of expression. For those who live passionately, embracing contrast as a source of inspiration. Our love for Caravaggio pays homage to his revolutionary art, his restless spirit, and his ability to transform the canvas into a mirror of the soul. A genius that transcends time, an artist who has left an indelible mark on the hearts of those, like us, who find continual inspiration in his work. This perfume is an invitation to travel beyond the boundaries of the known, to explore the depths of the human spirit, to live every moment with fierce passion.” –Note from the brand’s website.

I begin by stating that Astrophil and Stella IN EXTREMIS is created with such thought that picking out individual notes proved completely futile. I am usually adept in this regard but not with this scent. Instead it brought introspection, comfort yet also disruption. It is also the most challenging perfume I have experienced to explain in simple terms. Like its subject’s works Astrophil & Stella IN EXTREMIS is a contrast of rawness and refinement.

Meo Fusciuni is able to convey a daring scent but one which also provides calm. The naturalistic details a presented realistically and unconventionally creating a perfume that is completely authentic. One can imagine him deep at work matching raw natural ingredients in the solitude of his olfactory studio. His subject Caravaggio was known for his controversial manner which earned him a reputation as a rebel. His personal life was marked with incidents and brawls forcing him to flee his home in Rome and seek exile for the remainder of his life. These troubled times can be searched for within the accords of Astrophil & Stella IN EXTREMIS. There is an underlying malevolence and danger to the depth of the scent. It creates mystery and intensity.

The fragrance it at once fresh yet smoky crisp but smooth just like the stark contrasts Caravaggio is known for in his unique style of light and dark, known as chiaroscuro. This ability to capture emotional intensity of his subjects is reflected in Meo Fusciuni’s creation. The darkness comes from what I can imagine is a leather accord and the utilisation of deep woods, oudh and musk. This is contrasted with green notes, florals, and incense which gives the perfume a lift.

Perfumes such as IN EXTREMIS are not commonplace. It is an incredible scent to wear. Its rawness and beauty intertwined reflects a perfumer in harmony with his artistry. I will go as far as to state that this could well play out to become Meo Fusciuni’s Magnus Opus. To me it is the absolute best perfume he has released.

Caravaggio Inspired Astophil and Stella In Extremis

Hail, Caravaggio, expert of the brush,

Whose chiaroscuro technique does rush,

Through time and space, with shadows deep,

In every stroke, your secrets keep.

Thy canvas, a stage for human plight,

Where light and darkness fiercely fight,

In tenebrism’s embrace, truth revealed,

In scenes of passion, pain unconcealed.

And unto thee, Meo Fusciuni, we bow,

Artisan of fragrance, we do avow,

Thy scents, a symphony for the olfactory sense,

In aromatic verses, their beauty immense.

In blending styles, a wondrous feat,

Where visual and olfactory senses meet,

Caravaggio’s canvas, Fusciuni’s scent,

In harmony, their essence is lent.

Ode to thee, Caravaggio and Fusciuni,

In art and fragrance, a union of beauty,

May your legacies forever endure,

In the hearts and minds of those who adore.-   original poem by Karl Topham

What an incredibly intriguing review. I’ve heard such great things of Meo’s work so to say it’s his best work yet is so impressive. I’m drawn to the ideas of light and dark within perfume and hope these gorgeously chosen notes really impart that intensity. One for the wishlist for sure. Thanks to all for the draw. I live in the US

Meo Fusciuni is not a house I’m very familiar with so anything coming from them it’s exciting to me. This does indeed sound like a very complex fragrance and leaning fall/winter based on the notes. It takes someone enigmatic and maybe mysterious to pull off such fragrance, but also someone daring and adventurous. I unfortunately don’t have any fragrances by the house yet but dying to try more of their creations. Living in the US.

  • WillRhodes says:

I love how this fragrance is inspired/dedicated to master painter, Caravaggio. I’ve always loved how his art truly captured the human condition, and his use of light in his work is just astounding; a true master in his work being the inspiration to baroque… a genius of immense talent. Now a perfume paying homage to his revolutionary work? Oh, this is going to be good. The menace of In Extremis capturing the danger of a deeply gifted rebel and his troubled times holding a spirit of underlying intensity and mystery, wow!
Meo Fusciuni is a genius in his own right and hearing that this could be one of his best releases has me lusting to try this. The notes listed sounds so beautiful and I can only imagine the depth of his creation.
What a great review Karl. I wore Little Song yesterday and it always puts me in state of peace.

I recently fell in love with perfume made by Meo Fusciuni called Sogni. The rice note in it was so cozy and lived in and it spoke to me mysteriously. I felt like I was having a conversation with a perfume! I love the style of his perfumery, this intensity but reverence for natural materials and the sacredness captured in each creation. Astrophil & Stella IN EXTREMISM sounds like a trip to the underworld while still laying upon the soil of the earth. It sounds dark and majestic and every note sounds so rich and layered. I would be ecstatic to get my nose on this! From OR, USA.

  • I’m intrigued by the contrast between the supposed leather accord and the incense added to the green notes. I like Nabati from the brand and my favourite Meo’s creation is by far Luce, which is liminal and marvellous.
    I’m from Italy.

  • extremetraveler says:

I have not been privileged to sample a great deal of Fusciuni’s works here in Oklahoma, but for me he embodies a sort of mystique that resonates with me – a sort of, monastic perfumer floating in between worlds… releasing these ethereal fragrances that are familiar in energy, however remain a mystery to the mortal senses. The fact that this scent embodies the extreme contrast of Caravaggio’s masterpieces seems to be on par with his mystical formulations. From Karl’s description, the smokey dark leather, woods and musk evolving into greens and florals crowned with incense… only make the legendary Meo Fusciuni grow with intrigue. Oklahoma, USA

  • Wow I’m very intrigued by a perfume inspired by Caravaggio’s Clair-Obscur technique. Even though it had been a long time since my last art history class, Caravaggio’s dramatic painting technique has stayed with me. This perfume by Meo Fusciuni and Astrophil and Stella sounds amazing and it must have been a challenge to balance the light and dark elements in harmony. Never tried anything of Meo Fusciuni or A & S so would love to enter this generous draw. Marit UK

  • Chiaroscuro is not just a technique, it is a feeling: Karl seems to suggest that even the perfume is a mixture of opposites, which is something I really want to experience! L’Oblio is my choice when we talk about Meo Fusciuni’s fragrances.
    Commenting from Italy (EU)

  • As a lover of chiaroscuro and its master Caravaggio, I completely understand the draw of this perfume. What an extraordinary concept. I’d love to experience it. In maryland.

  • I have yet to try Astrophil & Stella’s creations but Songi by Meo Fusciuni has long been on my want to try list. In Extremis sounds wonderful, mostly because I have always adored Caravaggio’s moody, photorealistic works and wild reputation. I love the idea of a scent honoring him! I live in the USA.

  • What a promising article!
The fact Karl stated he’s willing to break his common practice of dismantling and analyzing notes and just enjoy the harmony AND disorder captured in this scent can only mean that In Extremis is truly a masterpiece. The contrast between light and darkness, chiaro e scuro, truly seems to be an olfactive echo of Caravaggio’s incomparable style.
I have never tried any Meo Fusciuni scent and I would love it if his perhaps best one yet (in Karl’s words) would also be my first experience.
    Commenting from the EU.

  • I’m a fan of Meo Fusciuni. One of my favs is Little Song. The notes in Extremis sound interesting to me, especially Angelica, Blue Chamomile, Incense, Ambergris and Oakmoss. On my wishlist it goes! Thanks for the opportunity to sniff. MI USA

This IS a very interesting Fragrances that really sparks my interest. The unión between the brand and Meo Fuscini must be amazing and I Live the bright and dark concept. In adition I really love osmanthus. Karl, as always. Has made a great job describing this amazing fragrance. MY favourite from Astrophil IS Mellow yellow. I am posting from Spain. BEST regards to all!

  • Owen Blackwood says:

I’m really interested in this fragrance, as it seems woody and maybe a little earthy with all the natural notes. I love how it is described in the review as a daring scent with naturalistic accords, and how it is a contrast between light and dark, I would absolutely love to own this fragrance. I live in the US.

  • I’ve long meant to try one of Astrophil and Stella’s fragrances based on their reputation. I can’t imagine a better muse than Caravaggio, and the fragrance sounds worthy of its inspiration.

  • My favorite by Meo Fusciuni is Viole Nere, a recent addition. I do find the contrasts: fresh but smoky, crisp but smooth, light and dark to be something I am curious to explore. I am in the US

  • Oh my goodness what an incredible review!! Just amazing thank you. And now I am thoroughly ashamed that I have none of his work yet!! The interplay of light and dark, brash and tender, good intentioned and exiled… wow… what an undertaking! I love a great all natural perfume because of its complexity, nuance, uniqueness, Life, that synthetics just cannot match. And this has some of my fav notes like lemtisk, Osthmanthus, magnolia, Galbanum, oakmoss etc. I’m superrr excited and praying I win! I am in California and would be so grateful.

  • Poetry, painting, everything is art in this perfume, the skill of its creator was to create a unique perfume, a perfume capable of arousing contrasting, profound emotions, as only something EXTREMELY beautiful can generate. Truly a beautiful description.

  • Astrophil & Stella IN EXTREMIS appears to be a fragrance that captivates with its intensity and depth. The name itself suggests an exploration of extremes, which likely reflects the character of the scent.

The fragrance seems to evoke a sense of passion and intensity, perhaps drawing inspiration from the tumultuous emotions depicted in Sir Philip Sidney’s sonnet sequence “Astrophil and Stella.” This suggests a fragrance that is not afraid to push boundaries and explore the complexities of human experience.

Additionally, the choice of the Latin phrase “IN EXTREMIS,” meaning “in the furthest reaches” or “at the point of death,” hints at a fragrance that delves into the depths of sensation and emotion. This suggests that IN EXTREMIS may offer a profound olfactory journey, with notes that evoke both darkness and light, passion and despair.

Overall, Astrophil & Stella IN EXTREMIS seems to be a fragrance that invites exploration and introspection, promising a sensory experience that is both intense and profound.

Meo Fusciuni is a grea choice for the perfumer, as he is known for its avant-garde approach to perfumery, often crafting fragrances that transcend traditional scent categories and evoke profound emotional responses. Given this reputation, the collaboration between Meo Fusciuni and Astrophil & Stella on In Extremis likely results in a fragrance that pushes boundaries and challenges olfactory conventions.

Meo Fusciuni’s signature style of blending raw, natural ingredients with abstract concepts of memory and emotion could infuse In Extremis with a depth and complexity that resonate on a deeply personal level. This partnership suggests a fragrance that not only captivates the senses but also invites introspection and contemplation, mirroring the poetic themes of Astrophil and Stella’s sonnet sequence.

My favorite Fusciuni is Varanasi. What strikes me about Varanasi is its ability to transport the wearer to a place of spiritual significance and cultural richness. It’s not just a fragrance but a sensory journey that captures the essence of Varanasi’s ancient traditions and profound spirituality. The complexity and depth of the scent mirror the multifaceted experiences one might encounter while exploring this sacred city, making it a truly immersive olfactory experience.

And I expect nothing less from In Extremis! 😀

  • (Colorado, USA) I am already a huge fan of Meo Fusciuni. I own a bottle of Shukran and have sampled most of his range. He is definitely a master of his craft. I have never sampled anything from Astrophil so to try this would truly be something new (yet familiar, with Meo!). I specifically pair my scents with art at times so a fragrance made “for” Caravaggio would be a perfect museum scent for me. I’m intrigued by the light and dark aspects.

  • chamberoflilith says:

Caravaggio and Meo Fusciuni… there’s nothing more fitting. The light and dark, the sharpness and the infinite calm. I tremble at the thought of owning this, but then peace envelops me. A beautiful review. A speck of gold in a sea of black. Writing from Romania. Thank you!

  • thee_boy_wonder says:

The comments reflect a shared excitement for Meo Fusciuni’s new fragrance, Astrophil & Stella IN EXTREMIS, inspired by Caravaggio’s chiaroscuro technique. The contrast between light and dark, along with the blend of natural notes, promises an intriguing olfactory experience. As someone drawn to the artistry of fragrance, I’m intrigued by the idea of a scent that pays homage to a master painter. The collaboration between Meo Fusciuni and Astrophil & Stella seems to have produced a fragrance that pushes boundaries and invites exploration.

  • Shibuichi2000 says:

This must definitely be a capo d’opera, if Karl can’t pick out the notes and if he thinks IN EXTREMIS is Meo Fusciuni’s Magnus Opus.
I have in mind the perfumes created by Fusciuni, that I had the pleasure of testing/wearing and I’m imagining IE to be a canvas of dark shadows, underlined by shining light – visually, because I can’t dare to think I might have a clue as to what IN EXTREMIS smells like.
    I’m in EU.

    I enjoyed your poetry Karl.
“A daring scent that also provides calm”. Comfort and yet disruption. You’ve piqued my attention. Looking forward to getting my nose on this Meo Fusciuni creation.

Dear Karl, I couldnt have put it better myself, it is a masterpiece inspired by the union of 2 masters. An incredible, turbulent voyage fraught with daring and raw excursions and deep reflective pools amid the mayhem that pause and lend a powerful moment of revelation. I find it completely magnificent and a rare creation. Bravo for your words and passion. I live in SW France, bien sur

  • I was immediately struck by Karl stating picking out individual notes proved futile. It exemplifies true artwork-where the piece is experienced collectively rather than as a dissection of its elements. Being new to the world of fragrances, I’ve not yet had the pleasure of any offerings from Astrophil & Stella or Meo Fusciuni. Though this seems another olfactory exploration i just take! Cheers from Ohio, USA! 🙂

  • Oh I love Meo Fusciuni. My favorite is his recent Sogni. But I have not tried anything from Astrophil and Stella. I think the last statement where Karl says this one might be Meo Fusciuni’s Magnus Opus is enough for my heart to start beating faster. I have to try this! I’m from Illinois, US.

  • Caravaggio and Meo Fusciuni is a win-win. To be honest, I’m curious about it since Astrophil & Stella usually makes more sweet, comfortable perfumes. Knowing that and Caravaggio’s life, I don’t understand if Astrophil is approaching a new way of communication. Can’t wait for it then! I’m from EU.

  • Smoky yet smooth? That’s an odd combination, perfect for the chiaroscuro style of Caravaggio. The review highlights how mysterious this fragrance must be, and I cannot wait to wear it (especially because it seems really unique). I love all Meo’s fragrances, but I believe his masterpiece is Notturno.

I am yet to try Meo Fuciuni’s work but I can’t wait to , simply because it’s described in such a beautiful way , his work has been recommended to me and I am eager to explore his work. I do see a somewhat complex note structure and it’s filled with many notes I like e.g patchouli. Id really love to win!

  • I love a dark and artsy scent, which seems to be Fusciuni’s entire repertoire. To capture Caravaggio’s essence must have been a wonderfully challenging task and I would love to hear more about how he approached it. I love the idea of chiaroscuro in fragrance form – the juxtaposition and contrast of elements somehow finding balance in the space between light and dark. Though Karl had a difficult time picking out specific notes, I am intrigued by the blend of a perceived leather accord brightened by florals and incense. It sounds sexy and mysterious. I have yet to try anything from Fusciuni or this house, but they certainly have my attention. Best of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

  • Taleofarose says:

There is a secret in every niche of this perfume, and Karl is willing to decipher them for us. Thank you, maestro, for your “aromatic verses”!

I have tried Astrophil & Stella’s Shanghai 1930. In Extremis seems so different, a mysterious stranger with elegant yet dangerous manners, meditative and malevolent, playing with our senses.

I live in Portugal. I would be incredibly grateful if I could meet In Extremis in person.

  • Max Corvinus says:

As a massive fan of Meo’s works Varanasi, Narcotico & Viole Nere (which I have missed in 2 giveaways on this blog), I must say I’m thrilled to learn that Meo has created one more work.

The concept sounds intriguing. Due to my visual impairment I cannot fully understand Caravagio, but I firmly believe that I will be able to do so through In Extremis. The two key words that caught my attention are malevolence & tenebrous – that’s exactly the way I prefer my fragrances.

  • Sherin Thomas says:

I’m amazed by the contrast between the supposed leather accord and the incense added to the green notes. I like Nabati from the brand and my favourite Meo’s creation is by far Luce, which is liminal and marvellous. From PA, USA

  • This is a very exciting review! Love the comparison to chiaroscuro and the contrast between light and dark. Given the notes, I’m trying very hard to imagine it, but I would guess that it needs to be smelled to be understood. Would very much love to try this one. The only Meo Fusciuni I have been lucky enough to try is Odor 93. I’m in the USA.

  • The contrasts are what excites me about IN EXTREMIS. The chiaroscuro concept of light and dark as evidenced in the fresh yet smoky, strips yet smooth fragrance offers an intense wearing experience. A smoky, woody leather contrasting a fresh green floral sounds fascinating. Favorite Astrophil and Stella scent is Nabati. I’m in the US.

  • wandering_nose says:

Thank you Karl! Your genuine and introspective review combined with your poem, makes me take a bow before the geniuses that both Caravaggio and Meo Fusciuni were & are. Nothing sounds common about in Extremis. Since I like fragrances that create mystery and intensity, I am naturally drawn to it, although I can clearly feel this one is for the most brave and real ones. In Extremis sounds so challenging it deserves undivided attention and patience. I haven’t tried any creations from Astrophil & Stella or maestro Meo Fusciuni, hoping to have the opportunity to do so at some point. Love their bottle design. Thank you from the EU

  • I have Meo’s Notturno and Luce. Karl’s review is intriguing in that the Meo’s art inspired to Karl to even write a poem of what a great scent it is. The smoking fresh opening is intriguing and how from that it goes into its more leathery aspects and woody depths. Coupled with these are what keeps the scent almost afloat with those identified florals and greens. Truly a meditative scent that brings enthusiasts to depths and heights of what perfume can offer. • What a beautiful and evocative review! I am yet to try Astrophil & Stella perfumes, but the description of In Extremis almost makes me blind buy it 🙂 Sounds really intriguing, more art than just a scent, full of contrast and soulful. Greetings from Romania, EU.

  • I do not know much about chiaroscuro, but I will have to do a little bit of research to see what was the theme behind In Extremis. So far, what I read about this perfume speaks to me and the notes are interesting as well.

  • Karl’s review of Astrophil & Stella IN EXTREMIS is captivating, offering a rich exploration of the fragrance’s inspiration and complex composition. The intertwining of rawness and refinement, echoed in Caravaggio’s chiaroscuro technique, promises an olfactory journey that is both introspective and intense. The fusion of naturalistic details and daring scents, alongside the poetic homage to Caravaggio and Meo Fusciuni, ignites my curiosity and desire to experience this masterpiece firsthand, despite not having a favorite fragrance from Astrophil & Stella or Meo Fusciuni prior to this.

  • Karl’s review of Astrophil & Stella IN EXTREMIS ignites my curiosity with its vivid portrayal of a fragrance inspired by the artistry of Caravaggio. The blend of rawness and refinement, mirroring the chiaroscuro technique, promises a complex and immersive olfactory experience. Meo Fusciuni’s ability to capture the essence of Caravaggio’s works in scent, combined with Karl’s poetic homage, creates a compelling narrative that invites exploration and appreciation of both art forms.

  • I would like to win this perfume because I loved Viole Nere by Meo Fusciuni and I love Caravaggio’s painting. I really like this sentence: “I will go as far as to state that this could well play out to become Meo Fusciuni’s Magnus Opus. To me it is the absolute best perfume he has released.” I live in France, EU.

  • This was one of the best reviews I have read. Being able to tie in one of the legends like Caravaggio in with the mastery of this fragrance and calling it Fuscini’s magnus opus is intriguing. Because at the end of the perfumery is an art of its own and for Karl to admit distinguishing notes is nearly impossible has me excited because that means that blend is its own masterpiece.

I only have one fragrance by Meo Fusciuni and that is Little Song and I absolutely love it.

    I live in Dallas, Tx

  • Meo Fusciuni is one of those larger-than-life characters we all love.
Amazing perfumer, love this release with Astrophil and Stella.
    Hope to win this one

  • Karl’s review and the note breakdown make this sound challenging in the best possible way! (I am a particular fan of magnolia notes in dark perfumes). I haven’t smelled any Meo Fusciuni or Astrophil & Stella fragrances, so I don’t have a favorite…yet. But I do love Caravaggio! I’m in Oklahoma, USA.

Magnolia and oud? Love it. Im from eu and would be stoked to tr this house and this piece of art.

  • I have heard great things about Meo Fusciuni’s fragrances but have not had a chance to try any of them yet. With this fragrance being Meo Fusciuni’s Magnus Opus, I can only imagine that it’s amazing. The note list has a lot of my favorites. Astrophil & Stella is a new house to me, but I’m looking forward to exploring their offerings. Thank you for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • What a fascinating concept! I have not tried any of their perfumes yet, but all of the notes of In Extremis sound compelling, although I can’t imagine what the final synthesis could be. Mystery and intensity indeed! Thanks for sharing and hello from Colorado, USA!

  • Interesting that it is daring, yet calming. Nice poetry Karl! A Magnus Opus for Meo, quite a compliment. I’ve smelled most of his line and it is artistic, unique, and wearable. My favorite is Nere Violet. I am not familiar with Astrophil & Stella. Thanks for the giveaway. USA.

How beautiful that Karl paid tribute to both Caravaggio and Meo Fusciuni with an original poem. Karl’s review brought me back to an art history course I took in university. I remember the darkened lecture hall and looking at paintings by Caravaggio, listening to the professor talk about the artists’s rebellious genius, hearing the word chiaroscuro for the first time. IN EXTREMIS certainly sounds like a work of art. I haven’t tried anything from Astrophil & Stella, but now, with Karl’s review, I will surely explore this house.

THank you for the cool review Karl. I love the idea behind using chiaroscuro as an inspiration for a fragrance. Once can see the contrast from lighter, herbal notes towards the much stronger and darker leather, oud vetiver etc.

Would love to give this a try.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • What a beautifully crafted ode to both art and fragrance! Your eloquent words effortlessly intertwine the chiaroscuro technique of Caravaggio with the aromatic symphony of Meo Fusciuni’s creations. Your appreciation for the depth and complexity of fragrance, particularly in the blend of oud, leather, and incense, shines through vividly. Thank you for sharing such a captivating reflection.

  • Meo seems like such a sweet guy, I have had Sogni on my wishlist for a while now, but have yet to actually try something from him. This seems like a good start! The rebellious and contrasting nature of this perfume really intrigues me, so does the Chiaroscuro technique. Hopefully I get to experience this myself.

  • Everything I’ve read here on Çafleurebon about Meo Fusciuni’s work suggests a really interesting perfumer at the top of his game. Karl pointed out Astrophil and Stella IN EXTREMIS is both exceptionally well blended and balanced between light and dark. “I will go as far as to state that this could well play out to become Meo Fusciuni’s Magnus Opus. To me it is the absolute best perfume he has released.” High praise! Thanks for the review.

What an inspired fragrance! I’m intrigued by the emphasis on contradictions (light/dark, smoky, fresh, etc.) in Karl’s review. This makes me really want to try this fragrance.

  • Karl your review is a stunning tribute to the marriage of art and fragrance! The way you seamlessly blend the chiaroscuro technique of Caravaggio with the aromatic symphony of Meo Fusciuni’s creations is truly masterful. Your keen appreciation for the intricate layers and nuances of fragrance, especially in the harmonious fusion of oud, leather, and incense, is palpable. Thank you for offering such a captivating and insightful perspective on this unique sensory experience.
