Tiny emeralds twinkle in the theatre’s soft glow, beckoning you closer, Astrophil and Stella A Night At The Opera opens with an enchanting array of herbal bittersweet greens sparkling with citrus undertones creating this magic feeling. A refreshing menthol breeze reveals patchouli, while sending delightful shiver down your spine. Award winning perfumer Luca Maffei has created a smooth, electric current of anticipation with this perfume composition; A Night At The Opera oozes elegant sophistication. It gradually unveils its desires, flowing and teasing with a sexy vintage 70’s 80’s structure yet made contemporary with its cleaner feel, as if you’re wearing contemporary clothes with a soft flash of fur. This gives A Night At The Opera a timeless elegance, shimmering in its jewel tones, wrapped in nuances of delicate, high-end tobacco. A smooth vanilla smoke feels light and fresh as it haunts the clothing you’re wearing, giving a beautiful light new texture like a soft kitten fur.

Luca Maffei masterfully captures the feel of sleek suits and luxurious silks and mink furs nestled in plush leather seats, while polished wood accents conjure the theatre’s rich heritage and structure. The ambiance is enriched by soft, dusty cedar, and a pale, almost moonlit spotlight casts a magical glow on the stage. Wearing Astrophil and Stella A Night at the Opera is like wrapping yourself in a softly faded memory of a wonderful night.

A subtle hint of smoke adds an air of intrigue, amplifying the fragrance’s alluring appeal. Delicate notes of vanilla weave with fruity amber, crafting a sweet allure. Cashmeran, musk and patchouli play pivotal roles, with patchouli standing out revealing its cool undertones before plunging into richer, smoother depths that evoke the darker hues of a theatre’s wooden interiors. Tobacco add darkens too, in fact its this that is making me think of classic perfumes used to hide cigarette smoke, like Habanita, ones that cleverly masked the smoke making it feel sexy as playing with the with the clothing materials aromas, that smokiness is again softened and hidden by patchouli, as these darker elements merge seamlessly with each other. Smooth is a word that keeps coming into my mind while wearing A Night at the Opera, it flows like a song cascading over sleek outfits giving you this hauntingly beautiful experience, providing a stunning space for dreams to unfold.

The  gentle, smoky notes of cotton and linen from cashmeran maintain that sleek, smooth character, while guaiac wood takes the spotlight in the late dry down, emerging like a spectral figure in pale stage light to tell its story of love and betrayal. The soft playful combination of an abstracted fruity tobacco and refined patchouli creates a playful yet understated allure and elegance. The smokiness of guaiac wood adds depth without being overly defined, allowing for a dreamlike quality that retains an airy elegance from start to finish, as a gentle veil of musks envelops you when the lights come up.  Astrophil and Stella A Night at the Opera conjures the image of a old theatre  with wooden seats, illuminated by soft moonlight, with velvet curtains and elegant gowns adorned with emeralds.  Everything is wrapped in a smoky, ethereal magic that this invisible opera performs on your skin with each wear. It’s a hauntingly beautiful perfume.

Notes: Artemisia, Bergamot, Flouve, Labdanum, Leather, Tobacco, Amber, Cashmeran, Guaiac Wood, Musk, Patchouli, Virginia Cedar Wood.

  • I adore fragrances that paint a vivid picture within our minds. A Night at the Opera does just that with its intricate details and subtle notes that are gradually unearthed from the moment cap is removed from bottle. Opera houses are typically considered to be a classy setting, which sprinkles an elegant, upper-class feel into the recipe of this cologne. Paired with a fancy outfit and Cuban cigar, you are truly able to immerse yourself in the scene. The list of notes is riddled with classics such as leather, vanilla, bergamot and amber. This, of course, is down to the expertise of the experienced Luca Maffei. He has taken common scents and transformed them into something truly unique and beautiful. This mysterious fragrance would be an amazing addition to anyone’s collection.

  • I have read about Astrophil and Stella and am intrigued by J’s review of Night at the Opera and especially the 60’s70’s structure and his theater analogies.

  • Thanks to J for this fantastic review.
Based on this, that’s the kind of fragrance that I would wear, with leather, tobacco and smoky notes.
I have indeed smelled a lot of references with these notes, but this could be something unexpected. Artemisia has a powerful balsamic-like scent that could give a boost of elegance and mistery to the fragrance. I imagine this perfume like the smell of a rich grandma closet, full of leather jackets, maybe near a fireplace.
Really interesting piece, I’d love to smell this.
    I’m from Italy.

  • Astrophill and stella a night at the opera sounds fantastic, as J describes, the leathery tobbaco and milk notes sound excellent, just like a cozy night out in the wood cabin.

  • I like the work of Luca Maffei. A Night at the Opera sounds intriguing with a herbal bitterweet opening, then smokiness from leather and tobacco, while keeping a smooth character with musk and cashmeran. Happy holidays from EU! 🙂

  • This sounds like something I would enjoy especially because of that tobacco note. I like how J says “ this fragrance is like wrapping yourself in a softly faded memory of a wonderful night.”

Vanilla & Patchouli are also notes I enjoy in a fragrance. Would love to get my nose on this one.

  • I see “A Night at the Opera” and the first thing that comes to mind is the Marx Brothers (but not Queen, for some reason). J’s review, however, moves me away from thinking about the Marx Brothers’ frivolity. His description of herbal bittersweet greens sparkling with citrus undertones captured my interest, as does the mixture of the guaiac wood and tobacco. This sounds very much like a fragrance I’d enjoy but probably would have overlooked. Located in the USA.

  • Ramses Perez says:

Notes like leather, tobacco and patchouli give you that elevated feeling of being at the opera. A night of elegance, sophistication and allure can only be accompanied by a fragrance of the same caliber. Theatres notoriously have an old timey feeling to them but this fragrance is able to combine those with also a more modern twist with the addition of bergamot and cashmeran to lift the scent up as well. This is a fragrance for the connoisseur. I’m located in the USA.

  • I hope this does not post twice, as I was not logged in. Anyway, I really like how J describes the fragrance as vintage and contemperary at the same time. In terms of the fragrance, I find it interesting how there is bitter herbal citrus and at the same time, there is a fruity tobacco.

  • Honestly, I love the way you write! The fact that this evokes the 70’s and 80’s really appeals to me and I am passionately fond of perfumes with tobacco, leather, and cedar notes, so this seems wildly attractive to me. You paint such a vividly evocative picture that I feel like I can almost smell it right now! Thanks to my friend Mitchell for steering me here!

  • The fragrance opens with deep notes of leather and tobacco, complemented by the unique aromas of angelica and labdanum1. This combination creates a captivating and bold scent that is both alluring and sophisticated. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • Astrobiology and Stella’s A Night at The Opera sounds like a fragrance for a sophisticated, elegant grown-up. The herbal greenery combined with tobacco, vanilla smoke, woods and leather give a luxurious nightclub vibe. I can definitely see the nod to 70s and 80s perfumery in the note list. MD, USA.

  • What intrigues me? Well you had me at Luca Maffei! What a maestro! And then to have it conjure up an old masterpiece like Habanita! I do love a well used patchouli too. I still havent tried this house and that’s just ridiculous. I am hoping that changes soon!
I am located in the U.S. thank you for the generous give away.

  • The way J describes it makes me feel like I’m stepping into a glamorous old-world theatre, wrapped in velvet and surrounded by a haze of elegance. The mix of herbal greens, smoky vanilla, and that vintage vibe brought into modernity is just captivating. I love how the patchouli and tobacco seem to dance between darkness and smoothness, creating this mysterious, sexy aura. It’s amazing how the fragrance is described as flowing like a song—so vivid! The idea of wearing something that feels like “soft kitten fur” is just chef’s kiss. Definitely feels like a scent that tells a story with every wear.

This Luca Maffei composition sound to me a luxurious and dreamy reflection of an old Austrian opera house where your senses are awake by the past and contemporary elegance of this ethereal atmosphere! I am very intrigued with these charming and refined notes of Tobacco, cashmere, Guaiac wood and Musks cause based on J’s review on how they can transform you into this magical unique and beautiful world of opera!
A really interesting approach that reflects this neo classical character of an Opera House!
Would love to get my nose on this one!

  • Based on J’s review I actually went and bought Astrophil and Stella.. the book of sonnets by Sir Philip Sidney, and a ticket to the opera. Wooden chairs, velvet curtains, a voice announcing an imminent tragic ending, and the scent of a fruity tobacco wrapped in patchouli – what a night at the opera!

  • I am not familiar with this line, but I do follow Luca and his creations. Based on the notes, it sounds perfect for the fragrance title. I’ve never been to the opera, but I know it is very elegant. I imagine wearing this is stunning and a place for dreams to unfold. Soft kitten fur has my attention. Thanks for the chance.

  • Shibuichi2000 says:

I’d try anything that Luca Maffei created – some of my favourite scents are his creations.
A night at the opera might just be that feeling of cocooning in the chair, before the show begins – you’re feeling comfortable, warm while you’re anxiously waiting for a magical night.

  • The review of A Night at the Opera by Astrophil & Stella feels like stepping into a grand theater for a special evening. Hints of warm, woody notes add depth, giving it an elegant and slightly dramatic feel. Seems the perfect scent for evenings out or any time you want to feel a little more glamorous.

  • I imagine an elegant, dark, mysterious aroma, with a strong personality. I love herbal, green, woody fragrances and it would be great to be able to try it.

  • Thank you for this stunning review. Your vivid imagery of A Night at the Opera evokes an enchanting journey, seamlessly blending timeless elegance with modern allure. I loved the comparison to classic perfumes like Habanita, adding a nostalgic touch to its smoky, patchouli-infused depths. Your description beautifully captures how this fragrance mirrors the textures and ambiance of a classic theatre—luxurious, refined, and hauntingly elegant. It feels like an olfactory performance that unfolds on the skin. I can’t wait to experience its magic for myself! Greetings from NY 😉

  • Its a joy to read about a fragrance when it contains so many of your favorite notes in combination. I would love to smell this for that reason alone but the notes and the theme do seem so fitting. Vanilla, guaiac wood, smoke, patchouli is absolutely what I would want to wear to the Opera. I am in the US.

  • wallygator88 says:

THanks for the fun writeup J.

This fragrance reminds me of summers, when I go to watch plays at an open air theatre a good drive away. They tend to show Shakespeare’s work quite often. I have fond memories of warm tree scented summer breeze, wafting in through the open theatre, the air electric with anticipation, before everything/everyone going silent when the lights go off, with only the soft moonlight for illumination.

I would really love to sample this fragrance.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • You had me as soon as a 70’s and 80s structure was mentioned. Yes! I beckon you to bring me those dazzling greens, menthol-ish patchouli, and bold woods of yore, all while giving it a modern spin. A Night at the Opera appears to do just that and I am most certainly intrigued. I have read quite a bit about this house here on Cafleurbon, but haven’t yet tried any of their offerings. I would be most honored to have this as my first experience. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • Smooth and smoky recur in the review over and over and that’s soooo appealing for a scent depicting a night in a magic place, dressed to the nines! I really love the description here of how the notes blend and illustrate the theme! Sounds lovely! I live in the US.

  • Smoke, vanilla, amber and musk, everything sounds great and gives me the opera vibes, the gentle smoky vibes also give it a great side note, it all sounds fantastic, just like a night at the opera.

  • Wooden and leathery pews at a theatre, the musky, velvety curtains, moonlight – it all blends into anticipation of something special that only happens once in a while. I’d love to try this one, and the bottles of A&S are very appealing and practical. I live in the EU.

  • J’s review reminds me the night at the theater la Scala in Milan and it really match my style: “contemporary clothes with a soft flash of fur”. Also as a creation of Luca Maffei the uniqueness of this perfume is granted

  • I am hearing more and more about this house Astrophil & Stella, and ordered some samples from Indigo Perfumery. Madame M is really good. What I liked about the review was I felt swept away into another time. USA

  • I love the way this Astrophil and Stella fragrance references classic perfume and historical theaters tinted by fine cigarette smoke. J mentioned a “refreshing menthol breeze” in the opening that is a surprise; I’m curious how that textures the warmer tobacco, vanilla, woody and amber tones. A Night at the Opera sounds like an excellent evening-out fragrance.

    I’m in the USA.

A Night at the Opera does indeed sound hauntingly beautiful. J’s review transported me to an elegant opera house, surrounded by people dressed in their best finery. The notes of leather, vanilla, tobacco, and patchouli provide darkness and mystery, yet all the while a dreamlike smoothness. This is the type of fragrance that will make each day of the new year an elegant event.
