Arquiste Tropical (Rodrigo Flores Roux) 2025 + Scented Journey to Mérida

Arquiste Tropical

Arquiste Tropical by Olya Bar

A sultry evening in Mérida, Yucatán, where the air hums with tropical warmth and the promise of celebration. Arquiste’s Tropical captures this magic with breathtaking precision, born from a historic collaboration and a personal love story with a guava tree. In 2013, Arquiste, led by Carlos Huber, partnered with Cire Trudon—one of the world’s oldest candle makers—to create the Mérida candle, inspired by Empress Carlota’s 1865 visit to Yucatán. As the first European woman to explore the region, Carlota wrote to Emperor Maximilian of balmy nights under a guava tree, its ripe fruit, intoxicating blossoms, and lush foliage mingling with the smoky thrill of festive fireworks. That candle, crafted with perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux, was a revelation—so lush and evocative, I burned through two in no time.

Years later, Huber’s own discovery of a modernist villa in Mérida, dubbed La Tropical, reignited the vision. The house, a colonial gem opening to a verdant garden and pool, was anchored by a guava tree, its scent weaving through palm fronds, ginger plants, birds of paradise, and creamy plumeria. The villa’s unique design—split between a living space and a modernist bungalow across the lush garden—felt like a private oasis, alive with tropical excess. On festive nights, like New Year’s Eve, the nearby Plaza San Sebastian erupted with fireworks, their singed paper and gunpowder notes drifting through the air, adding a spark to the sultry scene.

Now, reimagined as a standalone perfume, Arquiste Tropical is a floral-forward love letter to that guava tree and Mérida’s vibrant spirit. From the first spritz, ripe guava bursts forth—sweet, musky, and juicy, as if plucked straight from the branch. It’s not just fruit; it’s the entire tree: the verdant snap of foliage, the earthy whisper of bark, and the powdery bloom of white flowers. Headier notes of champaca, lemony magnolia, and buttery plumeria unfold, evoking the villa’s garden under a Caribbean moon. A savory green edge tempers the sweetness, like biting into crisp fruit, before a surprising shimmer of gunpowder and incense emerges—a nod to the fireworks that lit up Carlota’s nights and still spark Mérida’s celebrations.

Grounded by warm woods like mahogany and palo primavera, the fragrance feels like sun-baked earth beneath the tree, yet the fruit and florals remain the stars. Arquiste Tropical is vibrant enough for summer’s heat and comforting enough for winter’s chill, a sensorial escape to a sun-drenched hacienda where history and nature intertwine. Huber’s personal connection shines through—he describes the guava’s scent as “overwhelming in such a wonderful way,” and you feel that joy in every note. It’s a moment under that tree, penning a letter by moonlight, with the faint crackle of fireworks in the distance.

Arquiste Tropical is a triumph of storytelling through scent, blending Arquiste’s narrative craft with the lush inspiration of Mérida. For those who crave a fragrance that transports to faraway places and timeless moments, this is an unforgettable, exotic perfume. Spritz it on, close your eyes, and let Mérida’s magic unfold.

Notes: Mexican guava fruit, Yucatan lima, Fresh ginger, White plumeria, Champaca absolute, Guava blossom, Jasmine sambac, Guava paste accord, Mexican vanilla bean absolute, amber accord, Mahogany wood.

Arquiste is a house that has always been in my radar as I only hear great things about it. Almond Suede was a highlight last year and Tropical seems to start popping up everywhere now. Guava is a note you don’t see often in fragrances so when you do, run! I am Caribbean and as a kid used to eat guavas like it was water so I’m very intrigued to know how the guava smells in this one surrounded by the Lima, ginger, champaca and even the plumeria. Arquiste is truly putting out quality scents! I’m located in the USA.

I love the idea of centering a fragrance around the scent of a guava tree. I haven’t tried anything from this house, but I would love to sample from their discovery set. I live in Maryland USA.

  • Having tried this in NYC it is a keeper – apt name indeed. I am really curious about Sydney rock pool as it’s my home town. Live in NYC.

mohagony is a note i haven’t seen before, but i’m most interested in how olya describes arquiste tropical as containing the entire guava tree! fig fragrances a month ago captured my attention as i searched for the full gamut of fig fruit, fig nectar, fig leaf… can’t say i know what bark smells like but i’m a big fan of whole-tree fragrances! the lime, ginger, champaca, and plumeria in addition to the guava makes arquiste tropical sound like the ideal hot weather fragrance… different than the typical citrus or coconut fragrance!

thanks for the review, from USA

I recently got a sample of this fragrance and I really like it! To my nose it has a very distinct tropical fruit note, perhaps not as obvious guava note as some other fragrances but it is still a lovely tropical fruity floral. I agree with Olya, this is a tropical, exotic and very transportive fragrance. Sadly I have not sampled most of more recent Arquiste releases, so I will gladly participate in this giveaway. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • Wow. Arquiste tropical review was such a vivid exploration of the villa and scents that accompanied it. I felt transported to that space and time from the description of the guava tree and the woody, gunpowder smoke. Such an entrancing array of notes I would love for summer time. NY, USA

  • Oh what a gorgeous place that is!! No wonder it inspired a perfume. I have not tried many from Arquiste but the one I have is Indigo Smoke and I do love a tea fragrance! I am located in the U.S. and am grateful for the giveaway!

  • Olya painted such a vivid description of this scene in Mèrida that I’m tempted to book a vacation. Tropical can take me there to a warm night under foliage, with the full guava tree (fruit, flower, wood), lush garden smells, and gunpowder and incense to keep things unique. Intrigued by how it is both “vibrant” and “comforting,” and would love to try this and the other scents in the set. I have tried A Grove by the Sea, and it’s a beautiful unique interpretation of a scene of olive and fig trees in an herb garden.

Olya’s review transported me to paradise. We do large family vacations, and one year we rented a villa (main house with two guest houses) on a lush beach in the Caribbean. Green, floral, aquatic, fruity, lush. I’m gonna have to get my hands on a sample of Tropical. I’ve not tried any Arquiste offerings yet. I live in the US.

  • Fireworks and silvery gunpowder notes are an interesting point of distinction in a fragrance, and I don’t think I’ve encountered them in the context of a fruity floral, especially within a tropical context. The way the guava is used here is also intriguing: “It’s not just fruit; it’s the entire tree: the verdant snap of foliage, the earthy whisper of bark, and the powdery bloom of white flowers.” I love a fragrance that really paints a scene—Arquiste Tropical sounds fantastic. Would love to wear it this summer (and A Grove by The Sea).

    I’m in the USA.

I am excited to see a guava scent. I’m sure Arquiste can do wonders with this note (others haven’t quite hit the mark in my opinion). Joy in every note is a bonus. I still think about my guava paste being confiscated at the Miami airport. I’d love the chance to test some of their scents. My favorite is Architects Club. Thanks for the chance. USA.
