Artisanal Perfumer Russian Adam and his house, Areej le Doré, are standard-bearers in the world of contemporary perfumery. In an Areej le Doré scent, you will find rare natural ingredients of the highest quality distilled in-house by an innovative and expert hand. Areej le Doré bottles can be difficult to find, as they often sell out immediately after launch. This is certainly true of Russian Adam’s 9th collection, which debuted March 16th 2024 and is almost completely sold out. I was lucky enough to snag a sample set of the complete line and bought Areej Le Doré Paradise Soil.

Areej le Doré’s 9th collection is called The Musk Collection. Each of the five fragrances focus on a hero animalic note.

Perfumer Russian Adam explains his inspiration behind the collection, “I would say animalic materials on their own are amazing inspiration. When you look at expensive ingredients such rose, oud, or sandalwood, they deliver amazing feelings when we inhale them and when we apply them, but animalics are another level, another world even, because they come from living creatures. I believe animalic materials are much more deeply connected to us because we are living creatures as well. So, I wanted to make this collection where each fragrance can really tell a story of each animalic ingredient.”

Siberian deer musk pods (grains and skins) wiki

My personal favorite fragrance in the collection is Paradise Soil, a scent that showcases real Siberian deer musk as its olfactive center. Natural deer musk can only be legally sourced from Siberia, a supply that is carefully regulated by forestry officials, harvested in service of keeping the deer population at a healthy level. One of the musks used in the blending of  Areej le Doré Paradise Soil is vintage, giving the fragrance an especially refined, chocolatey and powdery feel. Combined with saffron, the musk creates a warm vermillion glow reminiscent of a sunset. In Islamic textural tradition, Paradise is described this way: “its soil is musk” and “its soil is saffron.” Those two guiding ingredients indeed bring a feeling of paradise here on earth. Russian Adam accentuates the unique chocolate timbre of the real musk with cocoa to highlight this ambrosial aspect.

Vintage Azerbaijani Rose Oil

When you experience an Areej le Doré fragrance, you will inevitably be linked to the past through olfaction. The vintage Azerbaijan rose oil that Russian Adam uses in this scent dates from the early 1970s. Its mesmerizing fruity rose dripping with pear and peach marinade shows a hint of its antique quality with its powdery edges. The floral bouquet includes jasmine, ylang ylang, tuberose, and raani flower. Raani flower has an animalic aspect that bridges tuberose and jasmine, moving the bouquet toward a heated skin quality. These florals add embellishment and create dynamic movement to the structure of the fragrance.

The dry down of Areej le Doré Paradise Soil features wild-harvested Cambodian agarwood distilled by Russian Adam 10 years ago, blended with plantation-grown Thai agarwood. A tincture of Indonesian and Indian sandalwoods is used instead of the expected perfumer’s alcohol carrier in this fragrance. The scent is wrapped in sandalwood, showcasing the best aspects of terroir from each. Full and alive, this fragrance is what I imagine angels’ wings to be like. Areej le Doré Paradise Soil is the soft and sensual connection to the animal aspect inside us all – a great pleasure to wear.

Notes: Azerbaijan rose, jasmine grandiflorum, ylang ylang, vintage deer musk pods (grains and skins), tuberose, raani flower, Siberian deer musk, cocoa, saffron, aged Cambodian oud, Indian & Indonesian sandalwood

Bottle my own, opinions my own.

  • I love the description of “paradise soil being musk”, and this amazing creation of a perfume with some very rare and expensive natural materials, sound like something out of paradise.
I know that the release of Areej le Dore perfumes are always anticipated with excitement in the fragrance community. I feel the same and will be lucky to win this incredible sample of Paradise Soil. I am in Chicago, USA.

  • Russian Adam is sort of this mythical creature that I e only heard about. To be able to try a scent of his would be fantastic. In Maryland

I like that this house uses natural ingredients of the highest quality distilled in-house by an innovative and expert hand. In Paradise Soil I’m interested in smelling real Siberian deer musk. Sounds interesting.

Russian Adam is a master perfumer . I dont own any fragrance from this line but this one intrigues me with the melange of ouds in it. From PA,USA

  • Oh goodness this house has such glorious releases and you have to be prepared when they launch! I personally love musk and have heard such good things about this latest line. I would adore having the experience of Paradise Soil. I love the name. I often wonder what the smell of heaven would be like – the musk, myrrh, mastic, saffron… Heaven! Here is a taste I believe.
Grateful for the chance, in California.

  • This sounds absolutely phenomenal. I find the description of Paradise Soil in this review nothing short of exciting; it’s new — it’s vintage! Setting aside Russian Adam’s stunningly photogenic profile which is quite literally worthy of being printed and framed, I’m loving that the Azerbaijan rose oil used in this fragrance is from the same era I was born (‘77).
The dual-sandalwood tincture in lieu of the usual perfumers alcohol is yet another of many treats listed in this indisputably unique fragrance.

I can only hope to get my nose on this one because it sounds divine.

Wow, the rose and jasmine didn’t strike me as an out of this world compliment to the animalic notes, but I’m suuuper intrigued how the musk mingles with the tuberose in the mid – Seems like a dichotomy of ‘springy, clean sheets’ and ‘ravenous, freak-in-the-sheets’ but, such is life ha ha. I don’t know if I’ve ever smelled anything with such rare, artisinal ingredients but I would love to get a whiff of this. Oklahoma, USA

  • I’ve yet to try any Areej le Doree but have been really curious to experience real deer musk. This sounds like a great place to start as the florals sound wonderful and May temper the animalics.I love the description of an angel’s wings. I’m in Brooklyn, NY

  • Animalic and musk notes are my favorites! This sounds like a very precious and rare fragrance. I’m in the USA.

  • Wow. Rose oil from 1977? The list of ingredients is nothing short of stunning. And real musk. I’d be thrilled to get my nose on something like this, crafted with so much care. I’ve never had the honor of trying an Areej le Dore, but I would love the chance to get to smell this. I’m in the USA.

  • Wow the chance to smell this!!! Russian Adams work has always fascinated me and love to win this. In Connecticut.

  • Paradise Soil by Areej le Doré intrigues me with its promise of rare and natural ingredients artfully blended to create an mystical fragrance. The allure of vintage musk and that Azerbaijani rose oil transports me to exotic, distant lands, while the warm notes of saffron and cocoa hint at a dreamy, sunset-like glow. The mix of rich florals and sensual woods speaks to the earth’s most enchanting elements. This fragrance feels like it would offer a journey into an earthly paradise, a soft and intimate embrace of nature’s finest gifts, would be delighted to try.

  • I am not familiar with real musk in perfumery. The paragraph explaining the Siberian deer musk was very interesting to me. Agarwood tincture instead of carrier oil must make this a powerhouse. I would love to get my nose on this one. Great review! USA

  • I have tried a number of Areej le Dore releases in the past and the quality of materials and depth of scent is what always strikes me about this house. I can’t think of anyone who does animalic notes better than Russian Adam and would love to try Paradise Soil. Musk, saffron, and rose is such a classic combination but it sounds like Paradise Soil puts a proper spin on it with vintage materials. Best wishes from the US!

As a fan of animalic fragrances, I would love to get the chance to sample Paradise Soil. I am very intrigued by the rose oil from the 1970s and the aged Cambodian agar wood. I imagine that the dry down of this fragrance is divine.
    I live in the USA.

  • Those bottles are terrific—dramatic typeface, unusual cap, and an cohesive design that really stands out. I can see why they sell out. The materials used here in Paradise Soil (great name!) also stand out; I was surprised to see Adam is using natural deer musk, vintage rose oil, and oud distilled himself, along with a sandalwood tincture instead of alcohol. Impressive focus on quality. Interesting review, Rachel.

I’m in the midwest, USA. I’d love to try this.

  • How fascinating! This sounds so luxurious! I love the descriptions of recreating the scent of paradise here on earth, the fruity rose, and how this scent showcases the terroir of the different sandalwoods. Thanks and hello from CO, USA!

Thank you for the wonderful writeup Rachel.

It looks like ALD has truly taken inspiration from the lines “In Islamic textural tradition, Paradise is described this way: “its soil is musk” and “its soil is saffron.” Those two guiding ingredients indeed bring a feeling of paradise here on earth. ”

Adding in the use of vintage rose takes this scent of the living world, truly into Paradise.

    Cheers from WI, USA

It won’t be long before the Siberian Musk Deer is an extinct species because of the greedy, corrupt Russian ‘forestry officials’…
