For some reason, award-winning artisanal natural perfumer Tanja Bochnig’s fragrance April Aromatics Scent of Many Colours somehow escaped my notice at the time of its release in the autumn of 2023; it was only recently that I became aware of its presence. I promptly contacted Tanja (who was on vacation in Ibiza at the time) and asked if she might send me a sample – which she kindly did.

Scent of Many Colours is a fragrant departure from April Aromatics’ customary modus operandi in that it is a playful montage of modules with which the perfumer had been experimentally engaged. As a result, there are no notes listed (in this wise, very similar to the Nasomatto perfumes): the wearer is asked to allow the olfactive dramatis personae to play out upon their fleshly canvas and intuit what they will. Therein lies a built-in element of mystery which is not normally the case in these days of transparency and full disclosure. I was intrigued, knowing full well that Tanja only incorporates high quality materials into her perfumes.

In many ways, April Aromatics Scent of Many Colours reflects upon the perfumer in a complimentary light. Through it, we sense Tanja’s ever-present joie de vivre, humor, and gentle optimism; it’s a window onto her perspective as much as anything else. In keeping with Tanja’s sense of balance and yogini way of life, Scent is both light of foot and lighthearted. Its carefree personality feels lyrical and unfettered, fuss-free. One can smell her ongoing love affair with chalorous climes and island life. There is a breezy facet which is palpable – a quality which renders this fragrance easy to wear and enjoy.

Scent of Many Colours is multi-tiered and prismatic, revealing many hues at various intervals throughout its development. It smells fruity, floral, woody, citrus-infused, spicy, and lactonic by turns – like an aromatic kaleidoscope. I believe that I discern rose at the very least; none of the other floral elements feel indolic, so that eliminates a few possibilities. I have an impression of stone fruit, juicy and smooth – and a warm spice accord which reminds me of those spices we remember fondly from such classics as Estée Lauder Cinnabar and the original YSL Opium. The lactonic facet which I perceive might well be the result of a coconut pulp CO2 or even massoia wood – the latter of which imparts a sweet tropical woody aspect that is buttery and redolent of coconut. What commences as citrus-tangy, floral and fruity eventually morphs into an ambery perfume: resin-rich, balsamic, simmering like mulled wine. In its eventual earthy drydown I suspect that a fine aged patchouli contributes to its sense of mischief. April Aromatics Scent of Many Colours is just that, a shape-shifter. While it hugs the skin, this fragrance lingers for some time, but it wears close – as many natural perfumes may. Those within one’s orbit are required to lean in to garner its full benefit; that merely indicates that you may apply it lavishly for a more sustained presence.

Ingredients: 100% natural essential oils and ingredients, organic grain alcohol

Perceived notes: citrus (bergamot, orange, Grapefruit), stone fruit, rose, coconut/massoia bark, patchouli, resins, spices

  • What sparks my interest about Scent of Many Colours from Ida’s review is the intriguing description of its prismatic and multi-faceted nature, blending fruity, floral, woody, citrus, spicy, and lactonic elements. The element of mystery, with no listed notes and the invitation to intuit the fragrance, adds to its allure. The sense of a breezy, island-inspired aroma that is both lighthearted and long-lasting is very appealing.

What sparks my interest about Scent of many Colors is that it’s described as a breezy scent but also has spices and is compared loosely to Black Opium which I love. I have not yet tried April Aromatics but would love to try it. I’m from New York, NY

  • What an interesting take on perfume. I guess this does allow one to make up their own minds and forces one to smell the scent before judging the scent. In maryland.

  • The sweet tropical buttery wood aspect absolutely sparked my interest it sounds like a composition of great harmony and temptation. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU. I don’t really have a favourite from April Aromatics because I never tried this house.

  • As consumers we are so accustomed to having all the notes and ingredients laid out for us, but the truth is that great fragrances develop far outside of what a “list” could indicate, and the typical marketing descriptions are even less helpful. This is why I so much appreciate these thoughtful articles that impart such depth of insight into the scent experience. I think I am moving away from looking at the list of notes, and relying almost entirely on thoughtful reviews by discerning fragrance experts. Thank you, Cafleurbon, for all you do, and also for these amazing giveaways! I love that April Aromatics is withholding a “list” , and based on Ida’s description of these playful facets and subtlety, Many Colours truly appeals to me! I have never tried any of their fragrances, but would love to. Thanks again for this generous draw, I live in NH, USA.

  • The review makes this sound like a chameleon, but in a wonderful summery way. I also liked to hear that there are no indoles, which don’t agree with me! My favorite April Aromatics is the delicious, irreplacible wonderful Vanilicious. I live in teh US.

Ida’s vivid description of “Scent of Many Colours” as a multifaceted and playful fragrance with elements ranging from citrus to warm spices and earthy patchouli sparks my interest. and the idea of a perfume that embodies the carefree, breezy essence of island life is particularly appealing. My favorite April Aromatics perfume is “Calling all Angels” for its beautifully balanced blend of hot resins.

  • I find it very interesting how there is no olfactive pyramid presented by the perfumer, for this release. It’s nice practice for one’s own nose to try and guess what the fragrance is made of, and also a nice “looking out of the box” exercise: many times we dismiss a fragrance even before we’ve given it a proper chance, only because it might contain one or another note or belong to a category we don’t prefer.
However, Scent of Many Colors does sound beautiful, versatile and complex, with its many intertwining facets.
I love Jasmina and Rosenlust from April Aromatics.

  • Oh April Aromatics is one of my very favorite houses!! I have yet to try this and I am so keep to do so but her Calling All Angels, Liquid Dreams, Purple Rain, Iristible etc etc all are just soooo amazing. I am excited to try this and “compare notes” with folks!! Thank you so much for the give way. I am located in California.

  • I’m a long time fan of Tanja’s perfumes and adore every bottle I’ve ever had! She’s truly kind generous as we as talented! This newer one ALSO escaped my notice so of course, I’d LOVE to try it!!
Your review especially intrigued me by the mentioning of spices and Cinnabar; oh myyyy!!
    Thank you so very much!

  • Other perfumes without scent notes listed I might view with a bit of skepticism, but I’ve tried a few of Tanja Bochnig’s other perfumes and know I can trust her to be true to high-quality natural aromatics. I love the playful nature of naming a fragrance like this “Scent of Many Colors” and would love to see what rainbow of notes evolve on my skin!
    Best wishes from NJ, USA.

Hi, I am a dedicated Calfleurbon reader here in Virginia, USA.

I really was intrigued by the linguistic fluidity of the review, and how it picked out the ambery, cinnamon notes among the chorus of floral and citrus. As of yet, I have still not won a giveaway, but I haven’t given up hope yet. 🙂

This is amazing, 100% naturals and organics. I’m imagining a light and airy experience that isn’t screechy or loud. Just right with smooth citruses that are well blended so nothing really sets out. Would love to experience for myself, from Jacksonville, NC.

  • Scent of Many Colours is an interesting approach to perfume composition using modular elements for fragrance construction. I can imagine using natural essential oils in this manner will produce a really complex olfactory experience. Perceived notes sounds like it would be a great summer scent. MD, USA.

  • The part that intrigues me about this perfume is its floral composition, but at the same time it has its woody, citrus scent to it as well. The breezy Island aroma in my imagination sounds interesting. Im from California USA

  • I’ve never tried a natural perfume and so I’m intrigued by the whole concept and the scent sounds divine. I appreciate the descriptive review.
    I’m in the U.S.

  • I love everything Tanja creates and this is the only perfume of hers that I haven’t tried.
Im intrigued by Ida’s claim that Scent of Many Colours is multi-tiered and prismatic, revealing many hues at various intervals throughout its development. It smells fruity, floral, woody, citrus-infused, spicy, and lactonic by turns – like an aromatic kaleidoscope.

  • This sounds like such an interesting perfume and right up my alley. It is very multi-faceted. I like the idea of a scent ”
Kaleidoscope” where the scent reveals different accords floral, Fruity, spicy, etc.

  • Perfumes with unlisted notes are always a fun puzzle to experience, plus a good test of how accurate our noses really are. Ida pointed out that Scent of Many Colours “smells fruity, floral, woody, citrus-infused, spicy, and lactonic by turns”; it will be a challenge to parse. It also sounds easy to wear and—smartly—wears close to the skin. Sounds great.

I’m in the USA. I haven’t tried any April Aromatics perfumes.

Omg, this sounds so good. I would very much like to try. I like how it has many facets. I very much hope I get to try, this would be my first perfume from April. I live in EU.

  • I hope I managed to comment before the giveaway ends. This sounds really, really lovely. I love how it supposedly has many different facets, lactonic being one of them, which luckily for me is something i absolutely adore in perfumes. To be honest, though, the whole composition speaks to me. This would be my first perfume from the house!

I love that Tanja does not list notes for Scent of Many Colors. I love the mystery of picking out perceived notes. It was fun to read the notes Ida perceived. I am especially intrigued by the stone fruit notes, and then the ambery resins perceived, moving toward the dry down.
I haven’t tried anything from April Aromatics.

  • zazazelle says:

An aromatic kaleidoscope with mystery notes sounds amazing, perceived notes as in this review sound even better – massoia, patchouli, citruses… blending multifaceted elements in one: fruity, floral, woody, citrus, spicy, and lactonic. Breezy and chameleonic – I really would like to have this fragrance experience.

I would love to sniff April Aromatics Scent of Many Colours. The citrus opening followed by stone fruits, spices and creamy elements, drying down to an ambery patchouli, as described by Ida, sounds so very lovely!
