A single flow’r he sent me, since we met.
All tenderly his messenger he chose;
Deep-hearted, pure, with scented dew still wet –
One perfect rose. ~ Dorothy Parker, One Perfect Rose

 Tanja Bochnig of April Aromatics

Tanja Bochnig of April Aromatics

Artisanal natural perfumer/yogi Tanja Bochnig of April Aromatics recently entered a European fragrance contest, where she placed among the top finalists for her latest aromatic oeuvre April Aromatics Lost in Roses. Tanja declined further participation, as one of the conditions regarding judging was to yield up her formula. Their loss is our gain: April Aromatics Lost in Roses is a celestial rose amongst roses, and I was grateful to receive a sample

John William Waterhouse

It reminds me of the perfumer’s sunny disposition, the fragrant sanctity said to be emitted by saints as they departed this mortal coil, and gardens whose walls are overgrown with very old, richly-scented heirloom roses. The Pre-Raphaelite reveries of John William Waterhouse, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Edward Burne-Jones and Evelyn De Morgan are an excellent way to envision this more vividly. Via the nose and eye, one is ushered into a state of Rose Ecstasy.

I can appreciate why Tanja was unwilling to relinquish her receipt. Along with its link to beauty, romance, purity, lust, chivalry, spirituality, Zoharic interpretation of Jewish wholeness (Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz’ treatise, The Thirteen Petalled Rose) and any number of affiliations, the rose has been associated with secrecy since at least Greek and Roman mythology: Cupid proffered a rose to Harpocrates, the god of silence – with the understanding that he would never reveal Venus’ secrets. It is not surprising that banquet room doors were carved with roses – leading to confessionals following suit. The message was clear: confidences do not go beyond these walls. The Latin phrase sub rosa reflects this.

April Aromatics Lost in Roses feels as if you are wandering at your leisure through an immense, wholly open-hearted maze composed of roses. Its mood is ebullient and joyful. We are lured into the maze with the fleeting charm of a flirtatious pink grapefruit – slightly pithy, somewhat bitter and likely among the sweetest of the grapefruit family – which paves the path to the roses. On the subject of roses: if they could drip juice, then they do so here.  April Aromatics Lost in Roses explodes with fruit, reminding us of how many olfactory nuances a rose may possess, and why they successfully ensnare willing pollinators.

The nectarous, honeyed fruit-floral accords Tanja employs are luscious – their sweetness accented with a lilac accord and tenderly grounded with a buttery silver iris and sandalwood cushion which anchors all the elements very gently. As botanical perfumes go, Lost in Roses is unexpectedly powerful: I sprayed only once, gingerly – and my dear husband awoke to its fragrance filling our entire flat, from one end to another. The rosy wraith lingered ghostlike, even after bathing.

Notes: pink grapefruit, Turkish rose absolue, Bulgarian rosa damascena, rose accord, iris, lilac, fruity accords, floral accords, sandalwood

Sample kindly provided by the perfumer – many thanks! It’s delicious.  My nose is my own…

I haven’t lived around heavily scented roses in years and would love to try Lost In Roses. Calling All Angels has been my favorite AAP so far. I live in the US.

  • It is impressive how interesting this fragrance is. I have tested dozens if not hundreds of rose based fragrances and yet still want to try more and this one surely feel unique with its sweetness, sandalwood and rose, with a power that not so many fragrances have.
Hope to try this one soon.

I love roses and this one sounds like it may be like sticking my nose in the roses in the garden. And I love iris too. We have a pink rose that smells Devine and should be blooming in a month if the Japanese beetles don’t eat them first. Pre-Raphaelite paints are the perfect mood enhancer for the rose. I haven’t tried anything by April Aromatics yet. NY state USA. Thank you for the drawing.

  • Ida’s review describes the evolution of notes in April Aromatics Lost in Roses exceptionally well. I love rose, especially combined with oud and other notes. That Tanja dropped out of the competition rather than revealing the secret formula makes April Aromatics Lost in Roses all the more intriguing to me and I really want to try it now. I haven’t tried anything by this brand, yet, so no favorites, yet. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • I am really interested in Lost in Roses because it takes rose, one of my favorite notes, and makes it juicy! This enveloping and intense rose fragrance with fruity elements sounds excellent. I have not yet tried April Aromatics perfumes. I live in CA, USA.

  • Southirina says:

Waw! An immense maze composed of roses! What a beautiful place to be. April Aromatics Lost in Roses seems to be a good vibe creator, that perfume that rises your spirit from the first sniff. The one you keep close to you and you trust it can save your day.
I would love to try Lost in Roses.
    Hugs from Romania

  • Wow !This delicate, feminine fragrance is composed of fresh Grasse roses and Bulgarian Damascena roses, along with citrusy bergamot and orange, as well as violet, magnolia blossom, cedar wood and musk, which add a more complex aroma to the floral scent.

The nectarous, honeyed fruit-floral accords Tanja employs are luscious – their sweetness accented with a lilac accord and tenderly grounded with a buttery silver iris and sandalwood cushion which anchors all the elements very gently.

It is been a long time since I have tried an all natural fragrance composition, but the paragraph above really picked my interest. I am a man and I love roses. I wonder how wearable for me would be Lost in Roses.

    Thank you!

  • This sounds like a lovely interpretation of rose! I’m curious about the combination of notes. My favourite fragrance from April Aromatics is Pink Wood. I live in Belgium.

  • Inge Plas says:

Love the pre-Raphaelites and a perfume that makes Ida think of their paintings is certainly right up my street. My hair is even dyed red because of the pre-Raphaelite models, those ladies definitely had an influence on me. I also adore roses and rose perfumes, a maze with roses would be a wonderful thing to get lost in. Living in Belgium, I’d love to try :0)

  • RiccardoC says:

I have never tried this brand, but I found fascinating this interpretation of a rose fragrance. Hope to try it

…I love all her valuable fragrance compositions <3 also ihra Yoga Chakra Oils <3 Just the enchanting, very creative, wonderful-sounding name – like: "Nectar of Love"; "Calling all Angels"… you can guess – with what passion, love, energy and care the wonderful fragrance experiences were created by Tanja Bochnig. Attention danger of addiction!… 😉
Kind regards from Vienna, Margit Rotter

  • Ida!!! ❤️❤️❤️ What a gorgeous review! We are traveling so I’m a bit late with my entry. I love the information about the rose’s symbolism & ties to secrecy (how fascinating)! As for the scent itself, who wouldn’t want to be accompanied by a naturalistic rose garden all day? Fruits & sandalwood sound wonderful!
Thank you for this wonderful opportunity! USA

  • Thank you for the review – it is always the best way for me to learn about niche fragrances and houses I would otherwise never know about.
I recently realized how many of perfumes in my collection have a large rose component, and it hadn’t clicked before how much I must like the rose note! So for that reason I am excited to learn about the fragrance and am grateful for the giveaway!
    Thanks from Canada!

  • This sounds so lovely. I loved the part where Ida describes Lost in Roses as joyful. That’s always a mood I want to be in and the right perfume can take me there. I have never tried April Aromatics. Thanks for the giveaway. In Virginia USA.

  • I’m very picky about rose scents. They have to be very natural smelling, and preferably suitable for warm weather, rather than dark or deep. It sounds like the fruity notes help give the rose a fun summer vibe. Honeyed most anything also tend to become new favorites of mine. USA

  • I’ve just begun my love affair with rose scents and this blend sounds like something I’ve never experienced before but so want to! I live in the US.

  • I was mesmerized by the notes breakdown – so many rose notes and accords. I am a massive lover of rose-centric perfumes, so Lost in Roses is just up my alley. Ida’s review has sparked additional interest in the fragrance by mentioning the up-headed attitude of Tanja Bochnig.
Thank you for a great review, Ida. I appreciate Tanja’s generosity.

Very interesting review Ida! What sparks my interest about Lost in Roses from Ida’s review is her description of how it reminds her of wandering through a huge maze of rose hedges, bright and flirtatious, ebullient and joyful. I love roses of course…but I also love mazes, particularly natural haybale and hedge mazes! There is something romantic yet mysterious about them – reminding me of all the wonders of The Secret Garden or Narnia, where anything is possible and getting lost is half the fun!

My favorite April Aromatics perfume that I’ve tried so far is Tempted Muse. I live in the US.

  • There seem to be so many rose perfumes this year, nevertheless a “ celestial rose amongst roses” that’s dripping with juice can be so intriguing.

I live in Portugal, and I’m not yet familiar with April Aromatics perfumes

Notes: pink grapefruit, Turkish rose absolue, Bulgarian rosa damascena, rose accord, iris, lilac, fruity accords, floral accords, sandalwood. I am loving the notes of Rose and Sandalwood in particular a lovely description by Ida. This is a house that I have got no experience with I am afraid. Thanks a million from the UK

A beautiful description by Ida has really captured my attention. I love Rose in perfumery probably my favourite note. A house that I have not tried anything by as of yet. Thanks a lot from the United Kingdom

  • I’m currently rediscovering this natural perfume line. The first of her scents that I sampled years ago was ‘Rosenlust’ and it’s still in the back of my olfactory mind that one day I need a full bottle, as it’s the only scent I know, that captures the ethereal beauty of both the rose and the rose Otto material. At the moment I’m resonating a lot with the sweet floral ‘Tempted Muse’, but Jasmina, Pink Wood and Lotus rising, moved quickly to my wish list too. Lost in Roses sounds like it will be a sweeter more fruity rose compared to Rosenlust and I’d love to try it. I’m from Berlin, Germany, same city like the perfumer Tanja. 🙂

  • I’m so ready for an ebullient, cheerful rose! And I’m also curious to smell an all natural powerhouse (I also love my rose fragrances which can shoot across the room). Thank you for the review, writing from the EU.

  • Lost in Roses by April Aromatics sounds like a fragrance I need in my collection. I can sense Ida’s excitement and love for lost in roses. With a mixture of fruits, floral notes, sandalwood and of course Roses. Unexpectedly powerful fragrance.
I have not tried any April Aromatics yet but it seems like I need to change that soon based on what Lost in Roses has to offer.
    Maryland, US.

  • I love the idea of roses and grapefruit as I often find rose to be too old to me. But when it has a spiciness with it, I like it so much more. One with ginger would be amazing. In maryland.

  • It’s interesting that Tanja Bochnig dropped out of the contest because she would have to share her formula. I’m trying to imagine who would be interested in giving up their formula for a prize. What was the prize? Perhaps if you were an up and coming perfumer, winning would mean the contest-holders would manufacture, market and distribute your fragrance, and there was some prestige and monetary award. I loved Ida’s connecting of the rose with secrets. I am in the US. I don’t think I’ve tried any April Aromatics.

  • Joan Mansbach says:

After reading these beautiful words I thought what could be better than one rose but two exquisite roses whose depth and luscious scent are so captivating. Not easy to create the perfect rose fragrance but Tanja Bochnig has got me Lost In Rose’s. I live in the U.S. Thank you for the draw.

  • GennyLeigh says:

Lovely review, Ida! Lost in Roses seems like such a feminine, joyous fragrance. I wasn’t aware the rose as a symbol was associated with so many things. I’m not very familiar with natural perfumers (I do have some Aftelier samples) but would love to try this offering from April Aromatics. MD, USA

  • megabass99 says:

Love anything with rose so I’m sure it will be a hit …. Checking in from Chandler ,Arizona

  • Claumarchini says:

I haven’t had the chance yet to try anything from the brand, of which I am very curious, so I’d love to be able to get List in Roses. I simply adore roses and their scent, once in Cyprus I went to visit a small factory of Damascena ones and I was so sad it was August because my dream would be to jump into a pile of freshly picked roses, as they do in May when it’s the season! From Ida’s review, I get the feeling Lost in roses brings you that sensation, so I’d love to be the lucky winner! Greetings from Italy

  • Zesty and fruity florals are, in my opinion, some of the most compelling. The pink grapefruit paired with rose is not one of the most common combinations, whereas the “roses dripping with juice” almost made me think of Turkish rose jam and made my mouth water. The fact Lost in Roses is also a titan of a performer can only be a plus.
Once again, Ida Meister is a master of words.
I live in Europe and unfortunately I do not have an April Aromatics favorite, because I have never smelled one of their perfumes.

  • foreverscents says:

I love that the rose in Lost in Roses is fruity. The fruit accord along with the grapefruit and the sandalwood really sound appealing. I love strong rose fragrances, especially if they are natural.
I haven’t tried any thing from April Aromatics.
    I live in the USA.

  • joetelegram says:

I love rose. I haven’t found many perfumes that have this note that I don’t like, but then again I am new to this hobby. I’m really interested in hearing about the rose and grapefruit combination. Very unique and interesting! I also really love the name “Lost in Roses”. I really look forward to becoming more familiar with “April Aromatics”.

Thank you Tanja Bochnig for the generosity and thank you Ida for another great review!!

Thank you for the unique story behind this fragrance, Ida. Their loss is indeed our gain.

I love the use of pithy, aromatic, bitter grapefruit as a foil for the lush, sweet, honeyed and heady combination of rose notes in this fragrance.

I have not smelt any fragrances from this house before.

    Cheers from WI, USA

Roses and more roses! I love rose in fragrances! Lilac and sandalwood it must be beautiful. Missouri USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

What interests me about Lost in Roses from Ida’s review is created by brilliant Artisanal natural perfumer/yogi Tanja Bochnig of April Aromatics. I’ve heard great things about April Aromatics and their vision to use all natural and artisanal ingredients and design. This sounds like a beautiful and delicate rose and floral delight. I don’t have a favorite fragrance from April Aromatics because I haven’t tried anything from that yet. I am from the USA.

  • ChanteusedesIles says:

Oh this sounds so beautiful! I was intrigued as soon as Ida mentioned lilac! I can’t think of any other rose perfumes that also feature a lilac note, and with fruits and sandalwood too! My fav April Aromatics is Unter Der Linden because it’s so rare to find a realistic linden perfume, I’m in Canada .

  • Regis Monkton says:

I can enjoy natural perfumery a lot, and I’d like to become more familiar with this style of perfumery. I’d like to try the collected works of this company. The list of notes for this fragrance is very appealing to me. I haven’t tried anything yet from this company. So far this year, I’ve added about a few rose-centric/prominent fragrances to my collection, and this one seems like it could be one of the best ones I would ever try. Ida’s description of it certainly caused me to be very interested in trying it. Also, I appreciate hearing about fragrances which have good overall performance. I live in the U.S.A.
