Amouage Jubilation XXV Man Review (Bertrand Duchaufour) 2008 + “Ultimate Incense” giveaway

Amouage Jubilation XXV Man review

Those of you who read CaFleureBon regularly may have reached the conclusion that I am something of an incense fiend. And you’d be right. I am powerless to resist the lure of fumy, resinous, balsamic fragrances (which may seem odd since I am far more likely to burn a scented candle than an incense cone). But ever since Aladdin’s cave opened to me – via Etro’s spooky Messe de Minuit – I have been utterly incapable of resisting the lure of a new incense perfume. But it wasn’t until Amouage introduced Jubilation XV Man in 2008 that I found myself practically curtseying before incense royalty.

All Amouage perfumes in the main collection contain frankincense, but Jubilation XXV Man, created by the inimitable Bertrand Duchaufour, was the first to make it the star. With what seems as many ingredients as Scheherazade had tales, Jubilation XXV Man is luxurious, complex, yet still quintessentially incense. Wearing it is like embarking on a magic carpet through a perfumed version of the Arabian Nights. The warm, plush notes glow throughout the fragrance like the rubies and topazes of Shahryar’s turban, dominated by a stunningly layered Omani frankincense. Lie back on your divan and let us begin …

Bertrand Duchaufour

It would be hard to describe the opening in the way of classical perfumery, so opulent are the first stages of Jubilation XXV Man. From the start, there is much going on, a bazaar’s trove of glimmering notes yet all with an uncanny orchestration that becomes more apparent over the next few minutes. First impressions bring the bite of bitter, fruity davana and juice-dripping orange and an impression of gold. The citruses are mixed by an unseen hand into an elixir of honey, bay leaf and sweet cinnamon, and just a touch of the caraway-like aroma of celery seed. But at first, I smell none of these notes separately but am struck by an immediate sensation of warmth. A moment or two later, I smell the distinctive, old paper linger of guaiac wood emerge alongside dark purple berry. I close my eyes and see silken scarves in a hundred colours flutter in the sultry breeze of the medina. Sun throws shadows onto dusty streets and a muezzin calls the faithful bleakly to prayer.

Omani frankincense, derived from the Boswellia sacra tree native to the country, is the heart of  Amouage Jubilation XXV Man. Few incense perfumes can match the rich, complex resin of Omani frankincense. It has a majestic, enigmatic character that can make other incense smell like sawdust in comparison. Its aromas peel back gradually, revealing themselves slowly like a story being written. At first, the frankincense is musky, damp, and dense, unlit. But gradually it becomes smokier, warmer, drier, and, as it mixes with the woods and other resins, almost velvety.

Half an hour into Jubilation XXV, I become aware of the perfume’s rhythm. Notes swell forward quietly and then recede, like waves turning in the shallows. Now the resins move through the fragrance in a quiet procession; myrrh, with its furry, sandy aroma, mirrored by its sweeter sister, opoponax; earthy labdanum wearing sweat on its brow. The woods of the base rise to greet them, cedarwood first, then the medicinal savour of oud. All the while, frankincense spirals around all the notes with a catlike purr.

Some hours later, in the quiet of late night, I raise my wrist again. Amouage Jubilation XXV Man is woody and sumptuous, but with a rooty underpinning that gives it a down-to-earth quality. There’s a cola-like note in there also that may be immortelle, and a dewy rose I did not notice earlier. But what strikes me most about the fragrance now is how textural it has become. Smelling it now is like feeling the weave of silk carpet beneath my hands; the gulleys and hills of the pattern changes, the cool of gilt thread against the darker hues.

For many incense aficionados, Jubilation XXV Man is IT. The ultimate incense. The red carpet. The preciousssss. While I don’t think I will ever settle on the ONE where incense frags are concerned – I am far too promiscuous in my liking for them – Jubilation XXV has a justly deserved place on the middle shelf of my armoire, where the fragrances I wear most inhabit.

Notes: Labdanum ciste, coriander, orange, davana, frankincense, blackberry, honey, bay, cinnamon, orchid, rose, clove, celery seeds, guaiac wood, patchouli, opoponax, myrrh, Atlas cedarwood, musk, moss, ambergris, oud, immortelle.

  • I’ve heard so much about Jubilation Man, how classic if a scent it is and I’ve been looking forward to experiencing it. The note breakdown is what interest me, and I absolutely love incense, which is why I love Interlude Man. So I know this would be an instant love for me.

  • I have the woman version but I need THIS because I am such a big fan of Bertrand Duchaufour and incense.
AMOUAGE JUBILATION XXV sounds amazing with all the resins, spices especially cinnamon and ambergris
Thank you for the chance I will go to Perfumology to buy a sample

I haven’t had a sample or bottle of Amouage that I didn’t like. So far Interlude Man is my favorite. I haven’t tried Jubilation XXV Man yet, but I love the notes; some I never heard of. I’ll have to test this on my dad too to see if it differs during dry down. The description is out of this world, and I’d love to get my hands on this. U.S.A.

  • I love incense perfumes and I love the Amouages that I’ve had the pleasure of smelling (my only full bottle of Amouage is Interlude Black Iris, which also happens to be my SOTD). I’ve always wanted to try Jubilation XXV, but I’ve never had the chance. This review just increases my desire to do so. I’m in Oklahoma, USA. As always, thanks for the generous draw!

  • I tried Jubilation very early on in my fragrance journey. I don’t think I gave it a real chance. I got an 8ml (I believe ) from Scentbird. I had heard what a beast in the performance department this was. I wrote it off as pleasant, but nothing special. I used the remainder as air freshener. That was 2 years ago, and I’ve developed my nose considerably. I look forward to experiencing the frankincense citrus and honey….which I don’t recall smelling.

  • Jubilation XXV is a legend and a masterpiece. It’s the scent that I compare all frankincense fragrances to. It changed my perspective on incense scents.

  • Both Men and Women version of Amouage Jubliation are amazing. They were appropriate tributes to Amouage anniversary celebrations and remain some of the most beloved from the brand, even after all these years and after numerous new releases since then. As the reivew says, it has many facets including woody, earthy, and incensy. I am in US.

  • One thing that strikes me about Jubilation XXV Man is Lauryn’s high praise for it as an incense perfume, which type I generally like a lot. Amouage Interlude Man, which I have tried, is smooth and strong, and I expect Jubilation XXV Man to be the same. Thanks for the review and a generous draw. From USA.

  • Like Lauryn, I am also an incense fiend! Bertrand Duchafore has made some of the best incense fragrances I’ve ever smelled and this one is one of them. I’ve only had the chance to sniff this on paper but it made a serious impression. Would be thrilled to win this thanks for the draw. In US.

  • What strikes me most is the complexity. There are so many notes listed and I feel like this is a true work of art. I’ve been able to smell this one, and I had a hard time coming to a consensus about it. I believe it truly does embody what perfumery should be. I love the opening blackberry and honey, but the progression to a wonderful incense with loads of soothing spice that I just can’t put my finger on is lovely. Kind regards from IN, USA.

  • I, too, constantly have incense burning in my living space, especially my bedroom. Sandalwood, patchouli, rose, lemongrass, jasmine, lavender—really whatever I can get my hands on. I’m most interested in the developments of each stage of this fragrance. Perhaps it’s the author’s way with words, but the journey this scent is portrayed to have is incredibly enticing to me.

  • Always seen mixed reviews on this one. I would like to try it just to see if I like it myself. Thanks gor the opportunity to win. Glad the site is back up & running. I live in Martinsville, Virginia USA & Instagram: @safegotem

  • I love Bertrand Duchaufour and I adore incense fragrances. My dream would be to have Bertrand Duchaufour create a perfume for me. I am fascinated by so many of the notes in Jubilation XXV… honey, orchid, rose, clove, myrrh, frankincense, ambergris…! Jubilation XXV sounds so beautiful, I have two Amouage fragrances, Gold and Lyric which I absolutely love. Thank you for this opportunity. I am in the US.

  • I too am a sucker for incense and probably will never settle on just one of them. This particular amouage sounds like it is an amazing incense. In maryland.

  • I’m still looking for the perfect wood fragrance. I’ve teied few Amouages but I still don’t have a full bottle. I would love to try Jubilation XXV!!!! Thanks for the great and detailed review!!!!

  • Jubilation XXV is an insanely good fragrance. Very high on my wish list. It is some regal and complex and so amazing in every stage. I love Lauryn’s review! I only have a sample of this fragrance and I’m afraid I do not have nearly enough juice to fully completed it. To me this is not a strong incense fragrance, yet incense are always there, lurking in the background. This review is sos good so detailed that I have to reapply this fragrance and try to follow along the development and try to pinpoint all of the moments Lauryn describes. But I completely agree this fragrance is the red carpet! What strikes me about the fragrance from this review…everything. Every sentence. 🙂 I’m from Illinois, US.

  • I adore Bertrand Duchafour. What a talent! Amouage Jubilation sounds so complex and beautiful. Incense scents, when done right, are wonderful, and this sounds beautiful! I live in California, USA.

  • Much like Lauryn, I am very much a lover of incense. I remember, even as a young teenager, always buying scented sticks and cheap wooden holders to burn incense in my room because I loved the aroma that those enveloping wisps left behind. Now, I too find myself drawn to those more resinous, fumy, and balsamic fragrances. I don’t know that I’ve ever smelled Omani frankincense, but Amouage Jubilation XXV Man is one of the most coveted and positively regarded offerings from the house from what I’ve seen. I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing a few from the house and they certainly do not disappoint. When Lauryn wrote “Wearing it is like embarking on a magic carpet through a perfumed version of the Arabian Nights.” it instantly transported me back to my Drama days in high school. I played the Auspicious King in “Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves”, so all of the references to the Arabian Nights universe struck home for me. Besides the incense, Jubilation XXV Man’s composition featuring notes like blackberry, honey, myrrh, and Atlas cedarwood is downright drool-worthy. I would love to be able to experience this olfactory delight. Thanks, as always, for the opportunity as well as the trip down memory lane. Cheers from Illinois, USA!

  • Easily my favourite of Bertrand’s creations and a new year’s day tradition for me. At least…until my decant runs out. I’m glad Lauryn mentions the warm that she gets from the outset. It really is that kind of fragrance. Combined with the berries and oud, it’s like sitting in a golden temple wrapped in purple fabric and sweet smoke. What strikes me is the comparison she makes between Omani incense and the other varieties. Does it really make them smell like sawdust by comparison? Wow. “Majestic” and “velvety” is definitely how I’d describe the base. “The preciousssss” LOL And is it really immortelle that gives fragrances that coca-cola vibe? I’m gonna have to look that up. Another superbly evocative review from Lauryn. Amazing stuff. USA

  • Thanks to Lauryn for describing Jubilation XXV. Amouage Jubilation is a well-blended and masterfully structured perfume, that`s why describing its smell is almost impossible.
I never had the perfume, but I sniffed it several times. Thank you for the draw and opportunity. I am in the US.

  • Jubilation XXV Man is simply perfect. Frankincense is such a huge scent memory for me; it always takes me back to Oman. And I agree, Lauryn, this one is textural. I would love to surprise my husband with XXV for our 25th anniversary in April, so fingers crossed.

  • Jubilation XXV is a scent I keep coming back to. That blackberry I think is what has me doing that. Of course along with the frankincense. Just have a decant though at the moment. Thanks for the review.

  • ThatMulattoDude says:

This article was really dope! Lauryn practically takes you on a Middle Easyern adventure with her wordsmithing of the regality of this fragrance. Jubilation XV Man is a fragrance I’ve been wanting to sample for some time. To win this would be the ultímate in good fortune. Appreciate the generosity of this giveaway! Many blessings from Virginia, USA!

  • I like the different stages this fragrance goes through. I sampled this a long time ago and it is a wearable incense fragrance for me. It’s really nice. Thanks for the draw, Ca

  • As a fan of anything incense, please count me in. The blackberry and honey notes sound delicious. Thanks for another wonderful draw and review. Mich USA

  • Jubilation XXV Man sounds like a wonderful incense fragrance. I’ve always been impressed by the quality and care with which Amouage scents are composed. I’ve never tried this particular Amouage scent but would love to. MD, USA.

  • Jubilation Man has the best blackberry note in any fragrance I’ve smelled. Period. Easily the best fragrance I’ve tried from Amouage.

  • Oh Boy! Amouage is the king (or queen) in incense fragrances. I haven´t tried this one yet, but what I love from this description is that Jubilation XXV has a complexity very unique. Also, the frankincense that Amoage delivers is top of the line.
    USA here.

  • Incense that changes every hour or so. I really need to try this. I love to smell a good frankincense, and this promises to be great! Any Amouage is worth trying. The whole line is so well blended. I want to see if the myrrh smells like my kitten’s head. Thank you for the draw.

  • I don’t have many incense based fragrances but the way Jubilation XXV Man is being described makes me what to smell it immediately and experience this awesomeness. The note combination sounds really unique to me. This fragrance sounds like the ultimate incense fragrance. I really hope to win this fragrance. I need this in my life.
    Maryland, US.

  • I too am addicted to incense scents, and this one sounds amazing! I can’t get stop trying new incense fragrances, and Amouage is one of the houses I’ve heard lots about but not had the privilege to try. Fingers crossed!

  • I enjoy Amouage don’t have this one but have sampled it and enjoyed it love a good incense perfume and it has some oud witch I also enjoy would like to win this for sure

  • Wow Lauryn, you did it again! Your scent descriptions are always so expressive and as one still on the early phases of the fragrance journey, this makes Jubilation XXV Man a target of my to-do list. Thank you Europerfumes for the drawing. I’m in USA

Such a richly described perfume review! And I’m certain this deserves it. I have sniffed the woman version but not the man. I absolutely adore incense fragrances (I’m like you, very promiscuous), but I’m intrigued by the dominance of the Omani frankincense in this scent, that puts other boswellia to shame. I can picture your description of running your hands through silk with gilt thread. Incense is both sexy, yet spiritual and soul-soaring. Thank you for the giveaway opportunity.

What interests me about Jubilation XXV Man based on Lauryn’s review is learning about how Amouage’s main collection are made with Omani Incense. I love how Omani Incense is featured in this fragrance because I am a huge fan of incense based fragrances. Lauryn did an amazing job with her detailed review. I would love the opportunity to win a bottle of these beautiful fragrance. I am from the USA.

  • Jubilation XXV is just great. Smells a bit like a mix between BlackBerry crumble traybake and BlackBerry Swirl Muffins with honey butter both with cinnamon. Can’t help it- Pastry Chef in me goes forward ‍each and every time. My favorite Amouage
Lauryn Beer option differs , to her Jubilation XXV is mostly incense fragrance, but to me it’s way more spicy, sweet and resinous , than incency.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • What strikes the most of Jubilation XXV is it could be the Holy Grail of incense frags. Also from the amount of notes in this fragrance you know its opulent and masterfully crafted.
Thanks for such an awesome giveaway!!! Love USA, CA

  • Thanks for very interesting review!!! Jubilation 25 Man is one of my favorite from beautiful Amouage. Love spicy incense in this perfume. Prefer more old batches,

  • I have a feeling I’m one of the few fragrance fans, who never tried Jubilation XXV before , Lauryn review was so realistic I’ll order a sample with my next samples purchase.
Amouage fragrances are just different. Even if you like all the notes , In my opinion you should never blind buy , without trying the fragrance you’re interested on skin. Some do smell very different on different people, when sprayed on skin .
Sunshine Man i share with hubby, the fragrance is gourmand on me , but on him is less sweet, herbal and sour. You can never tell we’re wearing the same fragrance !
Similar expectations I have for Jubilation XXV. Its silky well mixed incense, the resins, fruits, the Coca-Cola note Lauryn mentioned , i all find attractive . I wonder how it would smell on my skin, the same way it smells on Lauryn or different? ❤
My favorite Amouage is Sunshine Man
    Thanks for the draw

There’s a different story behind each and every Amouage fragrance, and i think the brand is loved by most Cafleurebon contributors. It’s obvious Amouage Jubilation XXV means a lot to Lauryn Beer.
Guaiac wood, frankincense and patchouli , and some honey , Jubilation XXV is upscale nighttime fragrance , with Middle Eastern flavor.
Every time I’m thinking about Amouage, I’m thinking about Interlude Man . Stunning fragrance.Finished 3 bottles during the years , and I’m on my 4th , and 1/3 of it is already gone.
Thank you Lauryn , and Europerfumes

  • I’ve been on an incense kick lately (Motif Olfactif Voile D’encens is a favorite) but the ones I’ve tried all appear to be considerably simpler designs than Amouage Jubilation XXV Man. I’d love to try this “bazaar’s trove of glimmering notes.” The cola-like drydown also sounds excellent. Thank you for the beautiful review!

  • I love Amouage’s “Jubilation XXV Man”: it is one of my favorite fragrances. I appreciate gaining insight into this fragrance. I hope that I win since I truly would love to wear this one more often. I live in the U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • WaltherP99 says:

One of the things I enjoy the most on Cafleurebon , is reading about fragrances I know, when the reviewer opinion is different than mine.
“For many incense aficionados, Jubilation XXV Man is IT. The ultimate incense. The red carpet. The preciousssss.”
I first smelled Jubilation XXV in 09′ , and I’ve smelled, and discussed the fragrance hundreds of times on forums, blogs, YouTube , and Instagram. I’ve heard some people calling it “incense fragrance:, but not “the ultimate incense”, not even once.
Truth to be told, Jubilation XXV went through a few reincarnations during the years, the original, the magnetic cap ,non-magnetic cap. ,and the smell itself changed . For example during magnetic cap period ~2012 – ~2017 , the blackberry note was way more pronounced , and overall the scent was not so incense heavy.
Maybe Lauryn body chemistry is different than mine, or she owns more incense forward bottle.
Even though we’re not exactly on the same page, Lauryn review was a joy to read.
By the way I’m wearing Blossom Love right now

Thanks for the great review Lauryn!

This fragrance is truly an ode to Omani frankinsense. I absolutely adored your writeup on the evolution of the incense notes in all it’s different layers. Omani frankinscene is such a wonderful gift of a material to the perfume world.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • The combination of notes and reputable performance sounds like a fragrance that any man would be proud to have and wear. There are so many good ones from the house, I would love the chance to try this classic as well. Rob/KY USA

Jubilation XXV is everything Lauryn Beer said it is , and more. I can’t believe it’s 14 years old now . I like the smokiness, the patchouli, the oud, the honey sweetness, and everything else in its sophisticated character.
Fragrances like Jubilation XXV you don’t smell often, unless you’re part of the Upper Class, or a price or princess in Oman .
Journey Man and Interlude Black Iris are in my possession
    Exciting giveaway , USA

  • It’s been a long-long time, since I started wearing Amouage perfumes , usually I prefer male versions , despite being a woman.
I see the One Thousand and One Nights , and Scheherazade connection Lauryn made , but most of other connections i don’t.
“woody and sumptuous, but with a rooty”
    Not to me
No Coca-Cola, nothing smells like celery too .
Ultimate incense? More like Ultimate Resins
“All Amouage perfumes in the main collection contain frankincense”
That’s not true Lauryn, I’m sorry, in the Main Collection there’s no incense in Reflection Man, Reflection Woman and Imitation Man.
In my opinion Jubilation XXV is like spice market in the Middle East on the one side of the street, and Middle Eastern coffee shops on the other one.
Jubilation XXV on my skin is mostly resins , and then honey, incense , blackberries , and syrupy sweet amber.
    Thank you for the opportunity

Lovely review Lauryn! What strikes me about Jubilation XXV Man based on Lauryn’s review is her description of the fragrance as having a wave-like rhythm, with notes swelling and receding in turns. I love fragrances that have unorthodox developments and progressions like this, in which the notes do a waltz of intensity, rather than just fading in strength and not changing. They are so much more interesting! I live in the US.
