Agarthi Waterways Spell

Agarthi Waterways Spell via the brand

From the dawn of time, people have believed there was another world, just lurking underneath the Earth’s surface and each civilization has woven a rich tapestry of lore and beliefs around this idea. In the theories of the underworld, the theme of a hollow Earth recurs throughout different forms and has gradually fused with mythology, literature, and science, seeping into conspiracies, popular culture, movies, and science fiction novels. Agarthi is one of these captivating myths, cloaked in mysteries and ancient legends – a fabled realm, said to lie at the very center of the Earth. Whether viewed as a spiritual metaphor or a fascinating piece of folklore, the concept of a hidden world continues to ignite our imagination, inviting us to wonder about the secrets that may lie beneath the mundane surface of our everyday world.

Agarthi is a brand that invites us on an escapist olfactive journey to the center of the Earth – so for today’s article, buckle up and let’s explore a hidden world, composed of four olfactive reams. The brand checked more than just the wild storytelling points on my checklist – and besides tickling my mythology-geeky side, Agarthi also joyfully scratched many of my analytical professional itches. As I have already mentioned in (too) many of my articles, I have a soft spot for brands that manage to align the physicality of the packaging with the soul of the brand. The bottles look like alien artifacts, with metallic reflections blending into vivid shades. The cap of the bottle is heavy and tactile – a heavy piece of decorative art made out of zamak that besides its aesthetic value, can also be re-purposed into everyday life as a paperweight, or turned inside out and used as a candleholder.

I also enjoyed the attention to detail that breathes in the hidden corners of the branding elements – the name Agarthi means “inaccessible” and the entire theme is reflected from the first (subliminal) glance in the logo that resembles a ship’s wheel or a compass dial. The idea of Agarthi came from the creative process of an eclectic team, (including Editor Ermano Picco) who have been working in marketing, design, and artistic perfumery for years, each bringing their flair and know-how into the project. The conceptual depth was translated into fragrance by a team of perfumers from Mane.

Agarthi Hidden Shores

Agarthi Hidden Shores (Cécile Matton Polge), photo via the brand

The first dimension – landing on mysterious hidden shores: “We braved the fury of the waves under stormy skies until, exhausted, we welcomed the inevitable shipwreck on mysterious hidden shores. Lost but hopeful, we sense the faint breath of forest air slashing the curtain of age-old fog. Here’s the land. The mineral shade of vertiginous cliffs takes shape like a mirage, wrapped in a transcendent glow. The freezing reminder of Arctic currents urges us to face the impervious climb, clinging to wind-worn rock spurs. Once at the top, the breathtaking magnificence of an ancient woodland is revealed; huge trunks rise like emerald skyscrapers towards a vault engraved in spectroscopic crystal reflections. Bewitched by that glare, we cross the borders of the lost kingdom of Agarthi walking on a dark velvet carpet of moss and roots.”**

My (Nicoleta) POV: an exhilarating aromatic scent that is both mouth-wateringly fresh and intricately cool – with just a hint of Slytherin danger lurking in the balmy green shadows. Has a retro nostalgic thread weaved in its fabric that makes it instantly approachable and especially comfortable – and comforting to wear in the humid heat of summer.

Agarthi Burning Core

The second dimension – the burning core of a Middle Earth: “We chase the glow of a barely perceptible purple sphere beyond the opalescent mist. The hours have lost track of time overwhelmed by the mighty stillness of an unknown star, the gravitational fulcrum of a middle earth, where day and night mingle with the transcendental light of dawns and sunsets. The star glows, returning the flame to its burning core.”**

My (Nicoleta) POV: the plot thickens with the adrenalized scent of molten lava – the Garden of under-earthly delights edition. Ambery, spicy, caramelized, with gourmand notes that flip from the hot delights of milky spun sugars to savory spikes and prickly gingers, all the way down to smooth and sleek leathers. If you love to ride old bikes, this feels just like pressing the kickstarter with your foot – that satisfying resistance, the solid connection, and then the low, strong hum of the engine roaring to life, sending a thrill down your spine and making the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

The third dimension: a horizon of floating lands: “A vision of pure beauty slowly rises: floating lands chisel the horizon as far as the eye can see like islands emerging from the thin mist veiling the wide valley floor.”

My (Nicoleta) POV: The closest thing to what I’m imagining flying on Falkor would be, re-imagining the universe in the Neverending Story. A purple haze of iris with powdery facets and a floral bouquet that feels frozen in time, in all its mineral beauty. If you like the vegetal, carroty reincarnations of the iris, this is a must-try.

Head Notes: Bergamot*, Magnolia Champaca E-Pure Jungle EssenceTM; Heart Notes: Tuberose Absolute, Iris; Base: Vetiver, Honey, Cistus Absolute

Agarthi Waterways Spell by Alex Lee of MANE

The fourth dimension is Agarthi Waterways Spells: enchanted rivers: “The roar of waterfalls leads us to the murmur of springs gushing into the air outlining a new and unexpected panorama. The crystal-clear waterways’ spell creates a euphoric wave of sparkling aquatic particles, rising like a nebula tracing the joyous vault of a rainbow. Rich floating garlands and lichens lap banks and leafy roots, embracing notes of damp woods and cold spices. Dew-covered flowers join the hypnotic chant of meandering streams and the reassuring transparency of silent lagoons that transform the scene into a limpid aquatic enchantment. The moist air, filled with hydrogens and luminescent pollen, dances among the juicy fruits and green foliage in a lush lost paradise.”

Agarthi Waterway Spells: Just from reading the notes, I would not have expected Waterway Spells to be my favorite  from this first “Scent Core Collection”, but the name does it justice, for indeed it feels, wears, and boosts your mood the same way a (positive) spell does. Marcel Proust said that “the only true voyage of discovery would be not to visit strange lands, but to possess other eyes.” I applaud the way Alex Lee manages to put this concept into practice in the olfactive realm with Agarthi Waterways Spell, taking the smell of nature, and repainting it back to life with an “other-worldly” artistic sensibility. In the same way he brilliantly composed the smell of an “alien flower” in Masque Milano’s Ray-Flection. With Agarthi Waterways Spells we are here in the deep water of a foreign underworld realm.

In an interview with Michelyn, 14 years ago, when he was still a student, Alex Lee of MANE said: “My personal goals are simple and that is to become a perfumer able to put the best fragrances in the reach of as many people as possible. While I dream of working as a fine fragrance perfumer, I am open to all experiences that will allow me to learn and formulate. I will follow where the wind takes me…. Being in a big company would be great because I am a workaholic and I need to be in a fast-paced environment where I am constantly challenged. I believe that there is a place for sensory research and new technology in fragrance design, so to be near the front lines of research and innovation would be fantastic.”

My (Nicoleta) POV: Agarthi Waterways Spells is a synaesthetic whirlwind of shades of cool. Imagine the crisp and juicy vegetal crunch of stems, filled with iridescent sap. Picture jungle leaves with nervures blurred by the hazy aroma of clary sage, and the deep green of moss and lichen dripping with moisture. Feel the bursts of astringent lemon juice, the sweet mandarin peel bent between fingers, zest bursting into the air as a fine mist. This fragrance evokes the sensation of standing near a waterfall, where the air is cold and the particles of water create an otherworldly experience, like swimming through gravity inverted in a mist of water droplets. Joyous, lung-opening, a hesperidic delight that opens worlds and hearts and fires up the imagination.

Notes: Head: Bergamot*, Mandarin, Lemon, Jungle Leaves; Heart: Green Bell Pepper Jungle EssenceTM, Violet Leaves Absolute, Waterfall Accord; Base: Clary Sage, Cedarwood, Moss, Lichen

  • The “aquatic particles, rising like a nebula” really sparked my interest. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

I haven’t seen a niche house hit the ground running like Agarthi has with this collection. Even though this is a new introduction to me; everything was thought out here: from the bottles, packaging, story and even the sample set adds to the culture/ambiance of the house. Reading this I feel like I am in the land of Avatar (or Agarthi in this case) and I made it to my local store where they have scents inspired by the environment. I did not picture Burning Core being borderline gourmand by rather a heat inducing fragrance for the winter months; what a pleasant surprise. Waterways Spell is giving Avatar The Way Of Water and does give me a very refreshing and vibrant feeling. This house is gonna do very well as they really came with a fully realized concept to the market. I’d love to win the Waterways Spell Bottle if picked. Cheers from the USA.

  • The introductory lore, and nicoleta POV intrigues me. Its lore gave it an interesting background that gives the fragrance an idea to what’s its use for. The iris facets, and floral powdery scent will be a first for me, if I ever get this one. Also, Alex Lee is one of those were people I would say as a young dreaming with a firm goal in life. Im from California USA

  • What an evocative review with the descriptions of the senses that the perfumes tickle in each of the four. Really intrigued me to try the whole collection. Waterway spells does sound the most intriguing to me.

Summer is near and I long for refreshing, cool, green perfumes.
Nicoleta sums it all up with “This fragrance evokes the sensation of standing near a waterfall, where the air is cold and the particles of water create an otherworldly experience, like swimming through gravity inverted in a mist of water droplets.”

I love the description from the brand and Nicoleta’s take after. It gives a real sensory story that reading notes just doesn’t. I can’t wait to try them all. Thank you for the draw. USA

I love a good sample set. And what a great way to introduce brands you’ve never smelled before. All these scents sound so good. Can’t wait to smell them.

Very interesting concept and visual for a fragrance house. I never heard of them but I’m sure they will make their mark in the frag comm world soon.

The one that interested me the most out of the 4 was Agarthi Burning Core. Notes of Amber, spice, caramel with gourmand notes sound right up my alley.

  • Summer is here!
Nicoleta Sounds like they are on target!
    Would love to try these

  • An olfactory experience of a hidden realm is an appealing inspiration for a line of fragrance. The visuals for these worlds would be an imaginative starting point for scents to follow. The possibilities are endless. Love the bottle design! Waterway Spells sounds like a journey to an alien waterfall. MD, USA.

  • Geez, what’s not interesting here? It all sounds amazing and, and this is important in this day, unique! And anything based on water scents totally gets my attention. I live in the USA.

  • Froaderick says:

The world of rock and roll has given us a number of brilliant concept albums, even a handful of brilliant concept bands. Agarthi takes concept perfumery to a different level! Everything aligns to tell its story that’s both mythical and natural. I especially love Nicoleta’s comparison of Burning Core to starting a vintage motorcycle. That absolutely visceral experience as an old engine roars to life is incomparable, and any scent able to capture that has my immediate attention! Cheers from Ohio! 🙂

  • Rachel’s review of Hez Parfums Muses perfectly encapsulates the vibrant energy and charm of New Orleans. What excites me most about this fragrance is its innovative combination of zesty citrus and delicate floral notes, which vividly conjure up the lively spirit of Mardi Gras. The addition of marine accords and woody base notes, mirroring the essence of the city, provides an intriguing complexity and authenticity. I’m particularly drawn to how this perfume honors the Krewe of Muses while capturing the artistic and cultural richness of New Orleans. It sounds like a beautifully crafted and truly uplifting fragrance!

  • Living in Nashville, TN, I’ve always been drawn to stories that transport me to other realms, and Nicoleta’s vivid review of Agarthi’s fragrances does just that. The concept of exploring hidden worlds beneath the surface of our own is tantalizing, and the way Agarthi captures these dimensions through scent is truly captivating. From the exhilarating aroma of Hidden Shores to the adrenalized Burning Core and the ethereal Floating Lands, each fragrance seems to unlock a new chapter of the imagination. But it’s Agarthi Waterways Spell that particularly intrigues me; Nicoleta’s description of its synesthetic whirlwind of cool shades and its ability to evoke the sensation of standing near a waterfall is irresistible. It’s like experiencing nature’s magic in a bottle. As someone who appreciates fragrances that not only smell great but also transport you to another world, I can’t help but be drawn to Agarthi’s enchanting creations. Living in Nashville, I’m surrounded by music and creativity, and these fragrances seem like the olfactive equivalent of a symphony, each note harmonizing to create a truly magical experience.

Has a retro nostalgic thread weaved in its fabric that makes it instantly approachable and especially comfortable – and comforting to wear in the humid heat of summer.

I love the idea of such a comforting thread especially for a scent that can take on the summer heat. I guess I’m feeling nostalgic and need that comfort. Scent is wonderful for that. In maryland.

  • I have not heard of this house and they have lots of variety to choose from. Thankful it’s a sample set as I could never decide! I do like the idea of lemon, violet leaves. Lichen and moss in the waterfalls one! So curious to try them all. I am in USA. Thank you

  • chamberoflilith says:

Everything about this is incredible. I love an escapist moment, especially when it comes to perfume, the ultimate time stopper. I adore the backstory, as a ancient Greek geek myself, a mystical land as inspiration is just perfect. Inspiration comes from a mystical land anyway. The bottles, just perfect. I was also most curious about Waterways Spells and was glad to see Nicoleta enjoyed it the most. “(…) jungle leaves with nervures blurred by the hazy aroma of clary sage, and the deep green of moss and lichen dripping with moisture” sounds thirst quenching but in a mysterious setting that gives me flashbacks of playing Lara Croft (the jungle part) as a kid. Thank you, from Romania

  • What a beautiful idea – the creation of scents based on mythical realms. Might be just the escapism we need right now. I’m in the USA.

  • roxhas1cat says:

I must agree, those bottles are stunning! Love that metallic touch. The photos are stunning. I have not heard of this line before. Based on the notes I would think that Burning Core would be my favorite with the Creme Brûlée note. Thanks for the chance! How kind to have two discovery sets. USA.

  • I love the fantasy and worldbuilding wrapped around these Agarthi fragrances. Like Nicoleta mentioned, the packaging is striking, reinforces the theme, and is practical—the zamak candleholder cap is a nice touch. The bracing freshness of Hidden Shores sounds perfect for muggy weather, Burning Core has an interesting sweet, spice, and smoked leather approach to the scent of molten lava (makes me think of For the Scent of It Molten Ambra), Floating Lands surprised me with its focus on iris. Waterway Spells equally defied my expectation of the name, more jungle than aquatic, with its waterfall spray on vegetation, fruit, and emerald floor. Sounds terrific.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • wallygator88 says:

    Thanks for the wonderful review.

I do remember reading about this brand from the Esxence report and that it was conceived of twenty years before, which to my mind was quite crazy.

Really beautiful collection, with fantastic presentation and graphics. Out of all of these scents, I’ve enjoyed the concept of Hidden Shores – that dark aromatic greenness, reminds me of walknig onto a jungle, waiting to explore what lies in the dark, quiet stillness.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • First of all, love the bottles presentation, beautiful aesthetics! The detailed descriptions and evocative storytelling truly brought the fragrances to life. It’s clear a lot of passion and expertise went into crafting both the scent and the narrative. Thank you for sharing such an immersive experience with us. Warm hugs from Romania
