Aether Arts Perfume Hive Mind (Amber Jobin) 2022 + Bees in Space Draw

In a galaxy far, far away, bees have left their home planet and zoom through the universe in metal hives, seeking out new planets to pollinate, ensuring their survival by boldly going where no bees have gone before. Hive Mind, a new creation from Art and Olfaction Winning Amber Jobin is, in her words, “a reimagining of bees in the distant future.” It’s a sci-fi gourmand, a futuristic honey constructed around honey, metallic spaceship notes and wax. With its flowery sweetness and molten metal, is as strangely alluring as Yeoman Rand’s interplanetary beehive.

I often describe Amber Jobin’s work as offbeat or quirky and I mean that entirely as a compliment. Her mind is a one-off, her inspirations singular and her execution highly individual but disciplined. Hive Mind has a layered meaning, referring not just to bees but to shared thinking. As Jobin explains,

I’ve long been fascinated by the idea of a collective consciousness, that perhaps as a species we might share some universal ideas that are hardwired into us. (Jung’s Archetypes spring readily to mind.) But I’m just as transfixed by the social behavior of other life forms. The cooperative behavior of mammals and insects are just as interesting and inspiring. Bees are especially captivating, but more importantly, bees lie at the heart of our survival: they pollinate 1-in-3 bites of food we eat and are essential to the health and prosperity of countless ecosystems. However, bees are in peril. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, more than half of North America’s 4,000 native bee species are in decline, with 1-in-4 species at risk of extinction.

Aether Arts Perfume Hive Mind begins, not, as one might expect, with honey, but with an impression of warmth. The first aromas are of melted beeswax and, then a moment later, heated metal. The metallic note is not the acrid odor of a hot iron skillet, but closer to the comforting smell of a car that’s been baking in the sun. Together, they give a dual sense of familiarity and dislocation that is a hallmark of much of Jobin’s fragrances.

The richness of orange blossom honey comes next, flowery and sweet. The honey here, with its royal jelly and pollen bouquet, bears an initial similarity to the early stages of Cristiano Canali’s wonderful Bee for Zoologist. But all comparisons fall aside after that as the metal and florals rocket off each other. I get fragments of sun-dried flowers rather than any individual scent; a rose petal; a bit of broom, perhaps. The metal opens out to impart a spearmint note and a bit of papery woodiness that makes me wonder if there’s some opoponax in here. As time passes, Hive Mind’s honey and metal course in parallel to each other all the way to dry-down, and there’s a hint of vanilla right at the end.

Aether Arts Hive Mind never smells edible, as many honey-centric fragrances do, though clearly prominent and subtle food aromas appear throughout the composition. It is gourmand as only Amber Jobin could give us: honey dessert squeezed from an aluminum tube while the table’s floral centerpiece floats serenely in zero gravity. And in the viewfinder, gold beehives whiz by, searching for another Earth, one where the inhabitants are neither so careless nor destructive, and flowers bloom forever.

Notes: Metal hive-ship accord, space-floral accord, space-honey accord, bee-bodies accord.

  • Lauryn!!! ❤️❤️❤️ I love this review!!! This is exactly right: “a dual sense of familiarity and dislocation” is what Jobin does so brilliantly! This duel firing of the intellectual & the sensorial on all cylinders is fantastic! ❤️ I can’t wait to experience Hive Mind! I’m so hopeful to be the lucky winner and so happy for whoever wins! Thank you for the opportunity! USA

A futuristic honey with metal and space flowers sounds kind of groovy. I have tried Zoologist Bee and I do like honey centric fragrances so it will be interesting to see how the cool metal interacts with the warm honey. The Star Trek reference with Yeoman Rand is great but if you’re talking Hive Mind, you need the Borg. MD,USA.

I totally believe creating quirky scents is a huge compliment and I love how Hive Mind seems to take that quirkiness in stride. I adore a honey scent and am always looking for someone to take honey to the next level. I would love to try this one, because who could resist a “honey dessert squeezed from an aluminum tube while the table’s floral centerpiece floats serenely in zero gravity.”? Such wonderful prose Lauryn! US

  • Hive Mind sounds amazing! I’m not a fan of straight up honey notes, but this one caught my attention!!!! I would love to try it!!!! I’m from Massachusetts, USA.

I am really intrigued by the notes this sounds like a futuristic fragrance. Thanks a million from the UK

Notes: Metal hive-ship accord, space-floral accord, space-honey accord, bee-bodies accord. You have just got to be curious how the notes will smell like on your skin. A house that I have got no experience but I am curious and interested to find out more. Thanks a lot for United Kingdom

I have never imagined that sci fi could be merged with a scent. The futuristic realities were, so far, scentless and aseptic. But now everything changed 🙂

  • I am entranced by this review. The duality of the nature and humanistic aspects makes this extremely interested. I would love to try this!

  • Aether Arts Perfume Hive Mind is indeed a unique perfume and I am very intrigued by the perfumer’s creativity. I must say, based on Lauryn’s review, I have never tried such a futuristic gourmand perfume before (after all, it’s from the future and I haven’t been there, yet). Quote by Amber Jobin was a lovely introduction to the concept behind Aether Arts Perfume Hive Mind – hives, universal consciousness, Jungian archetypes, all being represented in Aether Arts Perfume Hive Mind. Thanks for the review and draw. Writing from the USA.

I like how It can mix the gourmand and the metallic partes in a very well blended Way. I am writing from Tenerife, Spain (EU)

I have had an ongoing search for the perfect (for me) honey, or honey-inspired fragrance for a few years now, so this review caught my eye immediately. Hive Mind sounds like nothing short of necromancy, so I’d love to give it a sniff!

  • “as strangely alluring as Yeoman Rands’ interplanetary beehive”! Amazing. It is such a neat idea to imagine what spaceships and flowers would smell like together. I would love to try this! Writing from the EU.

  • Wow! Cool. Those were my first thoughts reading this review. Hive Mind seems to be unlike anything I’ve tried before. I’d love to give it a go. I am in the US.

  • Oooh a “futuristic honey” that sounds super cool! Honey and beeswax are notes in a couple of scents that I love so that definitely sparked an interested in Aether Arts Hive Mind. I have not heard of this house before but I am curious now.
Thanks for the writeup and giveaway!

Oh my, that is my fixture of amazing uniqueness for today! Plus it is so innovative and quirky that I can only tip my hat to Amber. I love the smell of warm wax, and I am partial to the scent that a car baking in the sun exudes as well as the aroma of well dried flowers, especially roses. All of that with the addition of honey are indeed bound to make up for ‘a sci-fi gourmand, a futuristic honey’ and I would like to get to know it. Many thanks from the Republic of Ireland, EU

  • Futuristic Bees! Amazing! What a cool concept for a fragrance. This tickles the nerd in my that loves sci-fi. I just love everything about this! Thank you for the draw from Canada!

  • I like the idea of a sci-fi with bees. They are indeed in peril and without them our survival will get much harder so why not will them in the future.
I’m intrigued by the metallic hive ship accord. I have experienced other metallic accord recently (Electric Dreams by Miguel Matos and Scent of the Metaverse by Rook) and I find them strangely appealing in their different interpretations. Also I enjoy honey fragrances and different takes on this note and would like to try this.

  • I love bee themed perfumes and this futuristic interpretation by Aether Arts sounds wonderful.

Thanks for the great review Lauryn. After smelling Bee, I was pretty set that I would never sample a honey inspired fragrance again. Bee was beautiful in concept and execution, but just intense for regular wear.

Now this review has gotten me excited about trying a honey fragrance again. I love the idea of a hive mind and the concept of this hot metal accord baked in with the remaining scents.

    Cheers from WI, USA

I am not familiar with the brand, and I would certainly love to be the lucky winner of this draw!! I also love bees, honey and its wonderful smell and flavour, that changes according to the type of flowers that are visited by the bees. This fragrance sounds unlike anything I have ever smelled, the notes are so intriguing and very difficult for me to imagine that I really am super-intrigued…the creaminess of the honey, the sharp edge of the metallic notes, the hint of florals…seems wonderful indeed and I am deeply impressed! Very interesting review! What strikes me about Aether Arts Hive Mind is the idea of a “science fiction” fragrance. i love science fiction as a genre and a perfume that combines both of my greatest interests, fragrance and futuristic novels, sounds absolutely alluring and inspiring and something I can’t wait to try. I particularly like that Jobin was inspired by the idea of collective consciousness and social behavior in other life forms since my favorite aspect of science fiction is that it is so often a conduit for social commentary.
