This year we are thrilled that one of our best loved iconoclastic artisanal perfumers, Amber Jobin of Aether Arts Perfume  is a finalist in the Artisan category of 2022’s Institute of Art and Olfaction Awards for Mayan Chocolate. Not one to rest upon her laurels, Amber shares her insatiable curiosity and creativity with us in her most recent release Aether Arts Perfume EarthRise.

“There may be life out there and habitable planets we could maybe call home but the logistics of this are only nominally within our grasp. Much better instead to see the Earth for what it really is: our mother, our spaceship and the source of all life as we know it. It’s time to rise to the challenge, to rise up as inhabitants of this planet to protect and save not only ourselves but all life on this beautiful, blue marble floating in space.” ~ Amber Jobin

Potent images possess the power to inspire us to thought, dreaming and action. They feed the soul and imagination – much as Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders’ magnificent photograph of Earth suspended in space has done, ever since its genesis on December 24, 1968. It is a fitting symbol to represent Amber Jobin’s billet-doux to our planet, an aromatic love-symphony composed of sea, soil and atmosphere.  All the elements (save that of fire) conspire to evoke the life-giving attributes of Planet Earth: the perfumer conjures briny ocean and fresh air without the Calone overkill one is accustomed to experiencing in so many aquatic varieties of perfume. First to arrive is a melody infused with a salty driftwood-like note; it soon dovetails with the freshly-turned soil facet of geosmin and verdant floral voices. At this juncture, Aether Arts Perfume EarthRise is abloom, nascent with the pulse of new growth. The culmination of this scent triad lies within a complex sandalwood accord which confers roots to this evanescent invocation of terrestrial delights: we require all these components for life itself. EarthRise represents an amalgam, a microcosm all its own in celebratory mode, as complete as that exquisitely haunting blue-green marble it is our privilege to inhabit. It is such an illustrative, idiosyncratic fragrance which is a pleasure to wear.

Now, I am going on a journey
And I pray all things end well
While Mother Earth looks after me
I will follow faithfully

When the grasslands crave for water
And the harvest needs sunlight
These are times when I am helpless
Mother Earth makes all things right

Mother Earth lives on the ocean
Mother Earth sails on the sea
I am blessed with her devotion
Mother Earth provides for me.” ~ Mother Earth, written by Eric Kaz for folksinger Tom Rush

Top Notes: Atmosphere and Ocean Accord (Ozone, Salt Water);Middle Notes: Verdant Earth Accord (Rich Soil, Green and Flowering Plants); Base Notes: Opulent Sandalwood Accord (featuring sustainably-sourced Santalum Album and multifaceted Sandalwood notes)

Sample kindly provided by the perfumer – many thanks! It’s brilliant.  My nose is my own…

pale blue dot

The iconic “pale blue dot” photograph of planet Earth, which was taken Feb. 14, 1990 by NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft, from a distance of 3.7 billion miles. As of  January 2022 , Voyager 1 is believed to be more than  23 billion million miles from Earth,

Editor’s Note: Reading Ida’s review and Amber’s quote this passage from Carl Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space immediately came to mind. “Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every “superstar,” every “supreme leader,” every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam”. Carl Sagan, 1994

This perfume is presented in perfect time: new space x mission has started and will find hopefully new things about earth and space.
Very peculiar perfume, I am curious to see how the notes that mimic soil, water and atmosphere will play out in the perfume

  • What an interesting fragrance… and the notes?!!! I love it! Sounds very unique and I just adore sandalwood!!!! I’m from Massachusetts, US.

  • With Elon Musk very much in the news these days and so much interest and research in space exploration, Aether Arts Perfume EarthRise seems to be very timely. I am very curious about the unusual notes and so would love to try it. Loved the pictures in Ida’s review and Carl Sagan’s quote. Agree wholeheartedly with Ida’s comment about images -” They feed the soul and imagination – much as Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders’ magnificent photograph of Earth suspended in space has done, ever since its genesis on December 24, 1968.” I haven’t tried anything by this brand, yet. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • Oh, this sounds intriguing! I love sandalwood and ozone and hope to try this one! I haven’t tried anything from this line, but with the renewed interest in space exploration – it’s a timely release.

  • Ida!!!❤️❤️❤️ I love love this review, Aether Arts, and Amber Jobin! ❤️ What an amazing inspiration & project! The notes sound gorgeous! I can’t wait to try this scent! I’m always so inspired and delighted with Aether Arts creations! Joyful, intellectual, wearable art! Thank you for this amazing opportunity! ❤️❤️❤️

Sorry! I forgot: I live in the USA.
I have many gorgeous Aether Arts scents. My favorite is probably any in the Exobotany series!

A house that I have got no experience with but I am intrigued by nonetheless. Thanks a million from the UK

  • I love Sandalwood I am intrigued to how it plays of the other notes. A house that I have not tried anything by thus far. A beautiful piece by Ida has got me curious about this house. Thanks a lot from the United Kingdom

I am not familiar with Aether Arts but I remember reading about Mayan Chocolate and I am very intrigued by Ms Jobin’s interpretation of our Mother Earth’s natural elements! The idea of celebrating the water, air and soil, together with the use of sustainable raw materials is absolutely great! Greetings from Italy

  • Amazing that the earth could be seen at all from 3.7 billion miles! It struck me that I don’t think I’ve experienced geosmin before, and I’d love to smell sandalwood and ocean together. Thank you for the review- writing from the EU.

  • Jake Dauod says:

What sparks my interest is the verdant Earth accord. I like the direction behind this perfume and the creativity from Aether Arts Perfume. I also like that it is not doused in Calone. I have never tried an Aether Arts fragrance, but I like that they make such unique scents. Would love to try this one. Kind regards from IL, USA.

  • Ida’s description of the air and water in the opening got me thinking. I’ve not yet found an aquatic perfume that I like. I’m always looking for a salty aquatic note. EarthRise sounds like it might have that… and so much more. I’ve never tried anything from Aether Arts, but Big Blue Marble was my favorite tv show as a child. I am in the US.

  • All of these notes, as Ida describes them, sound magical! My desire to smell like beautiful dirt is what first got me into perfume, so my interest is always piqued by earth/soil notes. And, as a coastal person (and a Pisces!) who now lives a bit inland, I love a realistic oceanic note. I have somehow never smelled an Aether Arts perfume, which I think I need to correct. I live in NY, USA.

  • I love the idea of creating a fragrance as a tribute to the earth. The most striking for me is the note breakdown. I am intrigued by how the composition of the ocean, atmosphere, and soil accords ankered with sandalwood smells. Ida’s description of EarthRise as an illustrative fragrance that is a pleasure to wear, has made it even more intriguing.

I am familiar with Amber Jobin since her Mayan Chocolate was featured on Cafleurbon and it is a finalist in the Art and Olfactory Awards 2022. It’s also on my wish list for 2022, I have been checking some other scents in her Etsy shop.

Thank you for a great review of the new fragrance and a generous giveaway. Greetings from Slovenia.

First of all, I just want to write that I went straight to Youtube and listened to “Mother Earth” by Tom Rush and loved it so much. I felt so much peace listening to this song. Thank you, Ida for referencing such a great song and introducing me to such a wonderful singer. Second of all, thank you to the editor for adding the passage from Carl Sagan. What a beautiful and comforting passage to read!
This fragrance intrigues me because I don’t care too much for aquatic notes, but Ida’s description of the driftwood-like note sounds very good. I also like dates way Ida describes the nascent and verdant notes.
I haven’t tried anything from Aether Arts Perfume.
    I live in the USA.

  • I like the notes, it sounds as a petrichor scent, i would love to try it. Kind regards from Mexico.

  • It was so fun to see a review for a fragrance with the name Earthrise just after I binge watched The Expanse and have been thinking about space. What are the odds of a weird coincidence like that. I know others have commented about spacex, but for me that wasn’t my first thought at all!
I enjoyed reading the article and it lead to an interesting discussion with a friend about what space itself would smell like (if it were possible to smell it given the vacuum!)
Thanks for the draw! From Canada

Hello! Carl Sagan’s “Pale Blue Dot” has been a point of inspiration for me for a very long time. I especially loved “Cosmos” and still find inspiration from Sagan’s gentle and forward thinking words.

I really love Amber Jobin’s concept, a homage to all things earth: “sea, soil and atmosphere.” Very interesting.

Reading through the notes: Atmosphere, Ocean, Earth, and Woods I’m very intrigued.

It’s interesting to think that all perfumery really is, is to take something that is already there and existent, and to reformulate to make something new or to highlight something we are already familiar with. There is artistry to this, but essentially the role of the artist is to highlight the art of life.

I’ve never heard of Aether Arts, so I’m excited to hear and learn more.

    Thanks!

The only Aether Arts perfume I’ve tried is Inuus (a jasmine fragrance), but John Frum and Incense Indica are both on my to-try list. Speaking to EarthRise, I love how lofty the concept is, and “briny ocean and fresh air” without a blast of calone? Now I’m really interested. The sandalwood base also sounds particularly nice here; sandalwood can take on a range of characters, and I’m curious which ones Jobin explored here. Thanks for the lovely review Ida!

    I’m in the Midwest, USA.

  • I would love to finally try a fragrance release from Amber Jobin. Some of my favorite fragrances come from indie/artisan perfumeries. This fragrance seems like it is unlike anything which is in my collection, and I want to see what it’s like. I believe Ida when she says that this fragrance is a pleasure to wear. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Southirina says:

I imagine Aether Arts Perfume EarthRise as an ambassador of planet Earth. Maybe next Voyager record project will contain a sample of EarthRise.
Thank you for this opportunity to open my mind 🙂

Thanks for the great review Ida.

This fragrance is a wonderful ode to our planet , combining all the life giving elements of earth. It sort of is a documentary on our status as inhabitants of this planet, that we are looking for other planets to inhabit, instead of putting our efforts to preserve the one that we live on.

I love the use of the sandalwood accord to ground this whole fragrance.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I enjoyed the photos and the song included in Ida’s review. Having studied remote science and satellites, Earthrise sounds like a perfect fragrance for me. I haven’t tried any perfumes by the house, but their artistic style really interests me. Based in the UK.

Lovely review Ida! What strikes me about Aether Arts Perfume EarthRise based on Ida’s review is the idea of a fragrance that represents our earth as a whole, not only from our every day all encompassing view of things, but rather from a celestial viewpoint as well. This added dimension of galactic perspective doesn’t necessarily distance one from the subject, but rather adds to it’s sense of place and purpose. A fragrance that combines salty sea notes, verdant floral and earthy soil notes, as well airy ozone notes, seems the perfect expression of our tiny yet vivacious blue sphere.

I don’t yet have a favourite Aether Arts Perfume perfume as I haven’t tried any of them yet, but from the descriptions I suspect my favorite would be. I live in the US.
