The new Aedes de Venustas SUEÑO LATINO, composed by Firmenich Principal perfumer Gabriela Chelariu is the 13th fragrance in Aedes de Venustas’ collection of signature scents. I asked co-owner and Creative Director Karl Bradl via email to answer a few questions about the creative process and he graciously complied.

Michelyn Camen: What was the brief for Aedes de Venustas SUEÑO LATINO?

Karl Bradl of Aedes Perfumery:  I told Gabriela Chelariu, Principal Perfumer at Firmenich that I wanted to create a tropical fragrance but not a cliché tropical. Nothing too fruity, nothing too sweet. I was thinking of a scent that hints at tropical elements like fig, cherimoya, and mango, but keeps everything refined and well-blended. The fruit should feel soft, textural, almost abstract and not something you can immediately identify. What I really wanted was a suede note to anchor it. a soft, elegant suede wrapped in blond woods, with just a touch of warmth and spice in the base. The idea was to create something that evokes heat and lushness, but with depth, sophistication, and a slightly woody undertone. Unisex, nuanced, and mysterious in the line of the Aedes de Venustas character.

Is the focus on one ingredient?

K.B: This time there was not a focus on a particular ingredient, more of a vibe. Robert and I didn’t want to build it around one obvious note like mango or fig. The idea was to create a scent that feels tropical without leaning into the expected cliché of a “tropical fragrance.” So instead of something overtly fruity or solar, we focused on texture, atmosphere, and contrast: damp green leaves, blurred fruit notes, suede, woods. It is lush, but also restrained. There’s warmth and humidity, but also a slightly earthy elegance.”

The name SUEÑO LATINO, is that reference to the 1989 song?

 K. B.: Yes, the name is a nod to the track from the late ’80s. It’s not a literal reference, but that dreamy, sensual energy was part of the inspiration. A sort of tropical mirage that’s as much about memory and mood as it is about place.

A note from the brand: Aedes de Venustas is a fruity-leather mirage born from the clash of nature and culture: dense palms, weighed down by fresh rain. An inherent richness born in lush rainforests and the urban jungle. This is SUEÑO LATINO. It’s the Amazonian tree canopy and Mexican architect Luis Barragan’s hot pink walls. Blooming birds of paradise and dancing all night to salsa rhythms. Heartfuls and handfuls of fruit. And even more than that, it’s a spirit that transcends the heat. It’s the warmth of damp jungle air, the creaminess of ripe fruits melting into spice and wood, the elegance of something both earthy and refined. It’s not a postcard version of the tropics but a hazy, dreamlike night where the heat lingers on the skin and the air is thick with scent. “At the end of the day, fragrance itself is a dream. You close your eyes, and you disappear.”-Karl Bradl

ah, unfortunately this may be hard to sample in the US! i think the concept here is quite novel– tropical without overplaying the fruit notes.

SUEÑO LATINO!!! A Latin dream! this is all me! Loved reading this—especially because it really resonates with my own approach to fragrance. As someone of Mexican descent, I’ve always been drawn to tropical fragrances. I love scent that hints at things like fig, cherimoya, and mango, but in a softer, more abstract way—nothing too fruity or sweet. For me, the suede note is key: a refined, textural base, wrapped in blond woods with a touch of spice and warmth. This looks like its aiming for something unisex and layered, with a mysterious, heat-soaked elegance. I am ready to sample this beauty!!
