We Love This Store: ZGO Perfumery in San Francisco + Cyber-Monday Perfume Draw

ZGO Perfumery in San Francisco

One chilly fall evening over a candle-lit dinner, partners Claude and Tani discussed many things- such as, what is the meaning of life?; what is the value of our work?; And why does scent and flame evoke something passionate and fundamental in our feelings. And moreover, if these scents all around us- are the signature of all manner of flora and fauna- what does it say about the Earth and our place in it? Thus, we decided to pursue our passion wherever it might lead us… and Zen: Garden~Oasis (ZGO) was born.” – Claude Gratianne, Co-Owner and Founder of ZGO Perfumery

A store I would love to visit tons of items that intrigue me. niche cologne candles tea. The store owner seemed genuine in his love of fragrances and other luxurious items. A fragrance I would like to purchase from ZGO Perfumery Carner Barcelona El born . USA resident

I loved the view of all the offerings at this gorgeous fragrance boutique and the tie in between the MF teas and fragrances (and I wholeheartedly agree that perfume and teas should be paired !). My favorite part of the interview was where Claude explained how he and his partner were inspired to open a perfume boutique and the pairing of spirituality/emotional health and fragrances as well as how he came up with the name of his store and the philosophy- zen, garden, oasis…awesome! I would LOVE to spend my gift certificate on the ZGO essential oils. I reside in the USA>

  • It was cool to see all that ZGO has to offer, like that they sell tea also. I like how genuine and relaxed Claude was during the interview…I like those qualities in people. I’d likely use the gift card toward a Parfum D’Empire, Jeraboam or MFK. They had several candles that caught my attention as well.

  • Very unique, beautyful shop with big selection of perfumes, candles and scented products. I realy enjoyed Sebastian video, his interview with owner Claude Gratianne. I was surprised that in ZGO Perfumery bestseller brand is Byredo!!
I would be in this beautiful shop and make purchase.- MFK, Dusita.

I enjoyed hearing about the inspiration for Claude to open the store in the first place, and the quality of the candles and diffusers. I met Claude during the Sniffing Around Town event hosted by Sebastian, and Claude was warmly gracious to us all, spoiling us with Champagne while we explored the large variety of top-shelf brands he carries. If I win, I think I would lean towards a Nasomatto fragrance purchase, either Pardon or Baronda, which I first sampled in his store. San Jose, California, USA

  • That was a nice chat with the store owner. Store looks great. Like to take a trip there. They have a lot of interesting fragrances that I would like to check out. UNUM is one of those. Bottles look nice
    Thanks. California

  • Loved how this video spotlights a store dedicated to fragrance. I’ve added it to my list of places to visit in San Francisco. I have a feeling I would spend hours there. Loved hearing Claude’s background and how he came to switch careers. Would love to immerse myself in the world of scent as he has. The origin of the name ZGO is very interesting. Should I win something from Serge Lutens would be calling my name perhaps. Saw on their website that they stock Ambre Sultan – love that one. I live in the USA. Thanks!

  • I liked that Sebastian showed that it is very nice to see fragrances moving into main stream storefronts. Great collection of scented products as well as perfumes. Very nice job Sebastian. Claude Gratianne is taking this to the next level. Great video.

  • Win or lose I’ll be checking out ZGO. It’s a train ride away. Claude mentioned they carry Dusita. Sebastian posted an interviewed the perfumer that I enjoyed. So I would like to get my nose it. Also I and many of my friends are tea obsessed.

  • How cool to showcase a store that specializes in these kinds of products. It is very inspirational to hear how the decision to do this came about. I’m not sure what is calling me, but I’ll figure it out. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the USA

  • What an amazing store, I love how they sell candles, diffusers and essential oils and teas in addition to perfume. I liked how Sebastian just let Claude talk and he asked interesting questions If I won, I would get ERIS PARFUMS- MA BETE.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Love this store! I visited last time I was in San Francisco. I appreciate their comprehensive selection of candles, diffusers, teas etc. to indulge the senses in addition to a nicely curated group of scents. Happy to hear Cire Trudon scents are making their way as well! I just love hearing passionate folks talking about what they love! I was interested to hear about Claude’s start as an engineer! Thanks for this draw. If I won, it would probably go towards something from Dusita or Eris. I’m in the US.

  • Nice store, nice owner. I have no idea what I’d buy should I win. Everything on the website is calling me. US

  • I’d love to visit ZGO. It truly seems like an oasis of fragrance. I love that tea is included in their offerings. I especially love that the concept was born from a desire to elevate the co-owners spirituality. It was quite a brave thing to leave their jobs and risk following their passion and creatie a beautiful olfactive space for all to experience.

  • What a wonderful and beautiful shop. I thought that Claude was so passionate about offering a scent experience that wasn’t just about perfume. I love candles and had never seen cire trudon before. I might treat myself to an early Christmas present and use the gc for the Trianon candle. I liked Sebastian’s question about how Claude and Tani decide which perfumes to sell. I like byredo gypsy water and I recently smelled velvet haze which I didn’t care for.
    Happy cyber Monday.

  • I really loved the way the owner decides on what perfumes to stock in the store. I want to be able to smell all the niches with olfactory awards and a lot of shops stock the best sellers mostly while the smaller houses get ignored. I really want to get my nose on some Eris scents.

  • Thanks Claude for letting us into your place. 🙂 If I’m chosen I’d pick something I always wanted but couldn’t afford. Maybe a Lutens. USA

  • How amazing, I think I sent in [or was going to, lol] a suggestion to do ZGO! I was just there and loved it! They have everything. They are truly an unmissable place on the West coast. I am usually picky but they are exceptional.

I bought a bunch very rare stuff there — candles and perfume lines you rarely see. What a great store and location! : ) I’d love to win and buy more from them. I’m a big fan of their store. I would definitely buy some luxury candles [like CT or Diptyque], room spray and some SL! And just in time for the holidays, which is great. I’m in the USA.

In the video I love when he went through all their Diptyque products, it’s such a beautifully laid out store. One side is more candles/home goods and the other has a perfume corner that is incredible. He was good at pointing out unique parts of the store — this makes me want to get on a plane and go back! In the interview, I like how he mentioned wanting to stock scents that have won awards. What a great idea.

  • I loved the original inspiration for the store that Claude shared. Yes, yes and yes! It has a very great value!!!!

  • This store is gorgeous. I loved seeing the wall of perfume!
It was refreshing to hear that Claude is driven more by passion for great scents, and, despite not having an industry background, chose to pursue his dream of opening the store. These types of stores can be intimidating for newbies, so I really appreciate how approachable and down to earth he is.
As for what I’d put a $50 gift certificate towards, I’ve been eyeing Cuir Ottoman by Parfum D’Empire, or maybe I’ll finally get a full bottle of Carthusia Uomo. No matter what I finally settle upon, I’m sure I’ll be browsing the site for hours.

  • SF is certainly blessed with some cool perfume storefronts. I like that they approach scent from all angles, thus the MF tea. That is what I would probably go to first in the store. I have a hard time finding it. Thanks for the story.

  • As someone currently looking for a new job, seeing people with a a passion for what they do puts a smile on my face and gives me hope.

I appreciated Claude’s respect for multi-layered fragrances and therefore including candles, teas, etc. My life requires generous servings of the jammy deliciousness that is Byredo’s Pulp to help get through winter. Thanks for the shop tour; I’m in the USA.

  • I loved the explanation of the store’s name. The store has a wonderful selection of fragrant products- the combination of perfume, candles, diffusers and even tea…. I bet it smells AMAZING!! Even the custom essential oils sound really appealing.

Parfums d’empire and Parfums de Nicolaï are two houses I can’t find where I am so those are high on my list, but the essential oils also sound so interesting.

    I am in the US.
