Puredistance WARSZAWA (Antoine Lie and Jan Ewoud Vos) 2017~New Perfume Review + Old World Chypre Draw

Antoine Lie and Jan Ewould Vos of Puredistance in Paris

Puredistance’s WARSZAWA, which is now being offered worldwide after a year of exclusivity in Poland, is a perfume with an inspiration, history and character all its own. WARSZAWA took two years to complete, requiring intensive collaboration between Creative Director Jan Ewoud Vos and Master Perfumer Antoine Lie of Takasago. The inspiration which translated into fragrance emerged 30 years ago when a youthful Meneer Vos first heard David Bowie’s intriguingly dark, affecting performance piece Warszawa: Bowie’s utterance was hypnotic, riveting, indelible.

When Jan visited Warsaw years later, his photographer’s eye absorbed its atmosphere as a breathing organism – teeming with activity, elegance, old-world charm. Fashionably garbed women trod its streets, beautifully poised. Jan was enchanted. Jan’s relationship with the Missala family – Stanislawa Missala in particular – contributed to his vision of a classically refined voluptuous perfume bearing the bone structure, élan and strength of character which she possesses. A connoisseuse of fine fragrance, Mme. Missala has created niche perfumeries throughout Poland which rival sumptuous boutiques all over Europe. Her vitality and chicté personified the dynamic glamour which Jan wished to convey aromatically.

WARSZAWA is an éblouissant floral chypre, every bit as floral as a chypre can be. There are no timid blossoms amidst lusty feral jasmine and ebullient broom. In folktales, the broom-flower is used to cast a narcotic sleeping spell; it is among my favorite absolutes. Broom has a rich scent profile – honeyed, herbal/floral/fruity, the stuff of dreams. Orris concrete’s waxy silvery irones impart a woody violet hue, bestowing yet another layer of floralcy and contributing to its charmeuse-like texture.

This headiness in the heart is bookended by skillful sleight-of-hand galbanum, grapefruit and limpid violet leaf as introduction (verdantly crisp, watery, sulfur-tinged citrus) and the shadow-selves of patchouli, vetiver and styrax. In such a manner we experience the chiaroscuro which makes this perfume so enigmatic. It is a brilliant composition.

WARSZAWA is a further foray into the dominion of classicism, beauty in proportion, as well as fragrant tribute to a modern metropolis which continues to flourish despite its history of travails. It gazes upon the wearer flashing a brilliant smile; its eyes speak of the sorrows it has endured and transcended. WARSZAWA is a floral flourish, triumph over adversity, and the refinement of grace under pressure.

That’s how diamonds are formed…

Notes: Galbanum, Grapefruit, Violet leaf, Jasmin absolute, Broom absolute, Orris butter, Patchouli, Vetiver and Styrax

The time and quality ingredients put into this fragrance is amazing. Ida did a wonderful job reviewing this wonderful fragrance. I unfortunately have never tried a puredistance fragrance. USA resident.

  • The notes in this one are really interesting. I’ve tried M from puredistance and is the most amazing and smooth leather type fragrance ever. Warszawa must be another gem from puredistance and i would be really lucky and happy to try this. I live in the EU, thanks for the draw.

  • Ida had me at “éblouissant floral chypre” and “lusty feral jasmine”. I’ve only tried M, but it won me over quickly. I assume that the quality of this will be comparable.

  • “Old world chypre”: that’s enough for me!!!
I love M by Puredistance (I own the 17,5 ml)

    I live in Italy.
    Thanks for the draw!

  • Such feeling and depth in this beautiful review by Ida. This will be the only Puredistance that i have not tried yet. I think one of my favourites would be Opardu – but they are all gorgeous!

I doubt i will ever be able to afford a bottle of WARSZAWA so a sample would satiate me 🙂

I live in hope in the UK….

This sounds glorious! I love the way Ida describes how the sumptuous floral notes play with one another. Broom is a favorite scent of mine to smell in real life! I love Puredistance, particularly M and Black, but the beauteous green Antonia is one I love to smell too. Thanks so much for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • This sounds realy gorgeous!! All the more so because I like chypre very much)) Thanks for beautyful review!
I love M by Puredistance- great masculine, very nice and compliment-getter fragrance.
    from Armenia

  • Wow, does this sound heavenly!! I am also a big Lempicka fan, so I enjoyed the whole post. Have only tried M and Black – like them both quite a lot. In the US

  • My favourite part of Ida’s review is how it recalls my memory of travels in Poland. I also loved the beautiful de Lempicka art. My favourite Puredistance perfume is undoubtedly Opardu. I live in montreal, Canada.

  • Loved the review. I have several friends from Poland who came from the area around Warszawa. I’m intrigued by this interpretation of the city. I’ve tried several of the Purdistance fragrances and liked them. Thanks for the draw. i live in the USA

  • This sounds like a lovely fragrance. Broom grows here during the summer and I inhale all I can. The phrase “honeyed, herbal/floral/fruity, the stuff of dreams” truly captured the richness of broom.
I do not have a favorite Puredistance fragrance. I live in the U.S.
Thanks for the drawing and the review.

What a lush and compelling perfume this seems to be (and if it’s as distinctive as Lempicka’s artwork, it’s sure to garner lots of attention!). I was particularly intrigued by Ida’s description of broom absolute – it’s a note with which I’m not familiar. I’ve also never smelled anything from Puredistance, so I would love to try this new scent. I’m in the US. Many thanks!

  • “vitality and chicté (of Mme.Missala) personified the dynamic glamour which Jan wished to convey aromatically” – this is what captured my attention, because I know some Polish woman and they are all very energetic, decisiive, almost electrified… like character of a good chypre! I am fan of chypre pefumes (I would like to mention that I am currently wearing Polish classic Miraculum Byc Može Tokyo perfume, which is great chypre at a very ridiculous price!) Unfortunately I have never tried Puredistance creations.
Thank you for the draw, I live in the EU.
