Hendley Perfumes MOWN (Hans Hendley) 2017 -New Fragrance Review + Love Among the Hay Stacks Draw

Hans Hendley of Handley Perfumes via Instagram

“Languid breeze. Season's swathe. Harvest Moon. Late summer's memory of cut grasses, ripened blooms, sun-warmed leaves, cured roots and plush moss.” ~ Hans Hendley describes his new perfume MOWN

Brooklyn-based artisan perfumer Hans Hendley creates truly lovely perfumes. I've purchased several and find them immensely satisfying – so when it came out that he had recently composed a hay fragrance, MOWN…well… catnip for me.

Red Vineyards at Arles, 1888 – Vincent van Gogh

Harvest Home has descended upon us as surely as seasons alter and the ever-earlier daylight wanes with poignant certainty. For many, it is the beginning of the year, not the beginning of the end: as crops are gathered and sent off to market, children return to school. Herbs are hung up to dry; fruits and vegetables line the larder shelves – preserved, canned, all in attendance like ladies-in-waiting. Some are frozen; others lie in wait in the cool dark root cellar for the call of necessity, their addition to stews, soups, ragouts, and compotes.

Haystacks in Provence Vincent Van Gogh

Hay is raked and rolled into bales and stacks, hidden from the inquisitive rain (for which we will soon pray with the coming of Sukkot). Hans Hendley has given a voice to the late-summer hay, and it murmurs wantonly into my willing ear.

Vincent van Gogh – Woman Sitting in the Grass 1887

Summer in Skåne: it is searingly hot as we meander through the meadow lazily; I pluck abundant chamomile and plait it into long dark braids. We do not realize that this summer will etch itself upon our features with the passing of the years.

The Siesta Painting by Vincent Van Gogh

Men and women both, stronger than we appear at first glance – reap the dried grasses until wearied, as we prop ourselves up against them for midday repose. Stolen kisses are sweetest. We laugh carelessly, tickled by hay strewn hastily behind our backs, heads, nestled between our thighs. Parched tongues seek salty places where moisture may be discovered.

Two Lovers (Arles)  by Vincent van Gogh

What of our perfumer? What does MOWN whisper in his ear? Has he ever carried the sleepy shoeless maiden across a dusty field in his bare arms, heavy and redolent of sweat, hay and sun-kissed skin? Hans shares mirror images of a kind: coumarinic and costly hay absolute (France yields wonderful ones!) is enraptured with tobacco as they sing of warmth on the dry wind together. They are scented siblings. Dried fruits, honeyed – dally with the winelike floralcy of champaca; there is no urgency in this climate. Orris butter and ambrette recount the beauty of the barn for us; it's in their very nature. Moss' presence promises the relief of sweet surrender.

Notes: Chamomile, hay absolute, champaca, dried fruits, tobacco, orris butter, moss, ambrette.

Many thanks to Hans Hendley for his sample! My nose is my own…

  • One summer, I and a boyfriend helped with the haying. It was a wonderful experience. (Although very tiring, hot and itchy!) I would love to win the travel spray of Mown.

  • As always with Ida’s writing she paints wonderful pictures with words !
I have not yet tried any of Hans’ fragrances but after a thorough read of his website just now I long to try them all !
I have a feeling that Mown will be my favorite…

  • I have not tried any of Hendley perfumes but chamomile and tobacco in this Mown sounds really nice. I would love to try that sample set from Hendley, thanks for the draw.

  • The notes of this all sound exquisite – there’s not one that isn’t one of my favorites. I love Ida’s description at the end where she lists each note and what it represents in the composition. I would love the decant of Mown if I were lucky enough to win. Thank you for the generous draw and beautiful review.

  • I must agree that Ida paints a picture with her words that is spell binding. One just feels the sort of languid lazy days of autumn that she is describing. I don’t have a favorite Hendley perfume. I’d love the sample set if I won. I have a memory of the smell of burning leaves in the fall. Can’t do that anymore. Loved the attached artwork. Thanks for the draw. I live in the USA

  • Lovely review. This was my favorite part.

Orris butter and ambrette recount the beauty of the barn for us; it’s in their very nature. Moss’ presence promises the relief of sweet surrender.
Hay & Ambrette are two of my favorite notes. Amora is my favorite Hendley perfume. Thanks for the generous giveaway, I would love to win the 9 ml spray. I live in the U.S.

  • The smell of hay is closely related to the memory of my childhood in the countryside, the sunny afternoons spent hiding in the barns…boredom, readings of ancient myths and fantasies about a boundless future.
MOWN sounds great, and Ida’s review is really precious, vivid and attractive: beautiful words and beautiful pictures, thanks!
I never had experience with Hendley perfume, I’d love to try his Mown.
    I live in EU.

  • I love Ida’s description of the autumnal larder and the cellar, which is very evocative. My favorite Hendley perfume is Tama – I have the perfume oil that was available last year – thank you Hans for composing such a beauty! I’m in the UK and would love to win a 9ml of Mown.

  • When I was a child, my grandfather had an orchard. It was full of apple, plum and pumpkin. It was beautiful. And the whole family was there, and enjoyed the fall.
Thank you for the draw. I would chose the sample set. I live in Europe.

  • I always wanted to try Auric, but he already has anothers that brings my attention too, I like the inspiration behind this one, this right moment before autumn, the dying summer have the sweetest light to me.
    I’m from Spain, thank you

  • BostonScentGuy says:

This is entirely up my alley! Hay/coumarin is my favorite note of all time, and everything else (especially the strangely pineapply chamomile and aromatic tobacco and notes of fruits) sounds wonderful! What gorgeous pictures Ida paints with her descriptions and the art direction is wonderful as well. This would be my first dabbling with this brand. I have many a wonderful fall memory, usually involving picking apples (leaves, twigs, sweet fruit, manure) and then making pies (spices, butter, sugar). I’d love to win the travel spray of MOWN. Thanks so much for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • Nice and thanks for the giveaway. This fragrance looks to be
Spring/Summer. Would like to smell it.
    Blessings to All
    Peace

  • Catnip for humans sounds wonderful. However I don’t know any of the Hendley perfumes, so I would prefer the sample set. Thank you for yet another great draw. I live in EU.

  • I love ida’s mastery of words:abundant chamomile ?plait it into long dark braids / shoeless maidens we are transported.I live in Aotearoa (New Zealand) and my early fall memory is of Greece, taking the last camping trip to a remote and isolated beach with my beloved there:) I still feel nostalgia for it all, yep- the whole Greek bundle! Never had the good fortune to try a Hendley fragrance – it sounds wonderful. Thanks for the global draw too 🙂

  • I enjoyed this review, like a mini vignette of an afternoon stroll through a hay field, reaping the hay. It sounds like a lazy hazy day. I have never tried a Hendley perfume but there is something so open and charming about his face, I want to see his work! A fall memory, the college band practices in a field behind my house and each new year I smile as I hear their rough start mature into a polished performance by game time. Thanks for the review. USA

  • Richard Potter says:

Ida, you slay me with your reviews, none more so than this one. Your exquisite, poetic words evoke a idyllic world, one in which I long to escape. I have wanted to try Hans Hendly’s perfumes for some time. Your review has changed that desire to an imperative. Lovingly illustrated by Michelyn, this review must have Maestro Hendley on cloud nine. I know I am. Thank you. USA

  • I don’t think I’ve ever tried a fragrance with a hay note. But reading this review trasported me to a farm where hay is gathered and raked and put into bales. I also realized that I have always loved paintings that show the light captured in hay. An early fall memory for me is when I lived in Tokyo– early fall is typhoon season. I remember getting soaked by the rain, cursing my life, and then, the next day, basking in ten most brilliant sunshine (a common occurrence after the typhoon rains disappear). I would love to try Amora from this line, so I would choose the sampler set. I live in the USA.

  • The fall in went away to college has a lot of my favorite memories. No one from my high school wand there, and I so loved the freedom to have completely new social dynamics. All my friends were a lot older than me there, and I met my husband who was finishing his senior undergrad year after 20+- year hiatus of playing punk rock in NY and San Francisco, and I still can’t believe he found me interesting enough as a 20-year old infant to want to hang out with me so much!
The review is so gorgeous, love the idyllic sensory images going throughout. It makes the perfume seem to truly have color, texture, quality of light, and the notes sound utterly perfect for a fall fragrance. Just heavenly to read!
Thank you for the draw, I’m in the U.S. and should probably go for the sample set if I should be so lucky!

  • I particularly enjoyed the including of the Van Gogh paintings in Ida’s review. I grew up in a desert climate, so the only imagery I ever had of fall and autumnal colors was through tv, film, and art. I’m curious to know if this scent can transport me to a world of my imagination, strewn with hay and the last moments of a summers sun.

  • Very insightful review on this house. I have never heard of it so learned a lot about these scents! Would love to win the set. In in Canada and thanks for the draw!

  • The pictures describe the theme perfectly.
I have seen his review with Carlos!

Interested in the sample set to check out his creations.
