Lubin Epidor (Thomas Fontaine) 2017-New Perfume Review + A Fragrance for Early Fall Draw

As a lover of both history and vintage fragrance, I have been delighted to see the revitalization of so many venerable heritage perfume Houses.  Lubin Paris (depuis 1798) has a formidable catalogue of historic fragrances to choose from and treats us to a glimpse into their past with their 2017 launch, Epidor, which was first released in 1912. Creative Director GillesThevenin chose  perfumer Thomas Fontaine to bring this golden elixir of a fragrance into the 21st century, in all her warm, glowing splendor.

Epidor was inspired by the harvest season, and circlets of golden ripe wheat adorn the packaging, so its springtime 2017 launch was a little puzzling, but I can understand the logic. It opens with a hint of violet, and is brimming with orange blossom; both of these florals bloom in Spring and both wear beautifully in cooler weather.

But imagine them on a sunny afternoon in late September; when the relentless perkiness of the orange blossom has mellowed into a rich, honeyed background, and the shy violet has warmed up to being open for suggestions. Add a little succulent, sun-ripened plum, and tuck it all in to a cloud of boozy tonka bean. You will float around in this gilded aura for hours; Epidor has fantastic longevity.

Once it begins to fade, you’ll want to go start all over again; I know, because the first few times I tested Epidor, I wanted my shimmering golden aura back at once and immediately reapplied at this phase. What I didn’t realize is that this aura was actually the middle phase; there was still more beauty to come.

On subsequent wearings, without reapplying, the shimmering halo continued to surround me, but the boozy cloud of tonka bean gently wove itself into a bed of sweetly scented hay. I generally prefer my base notes on the heavy side, but this drydown, which also has hints of cedar and sandalwood, is exquisite. It ties all the notes together beautifully, and makes perfect sense of the harvest theme.

Fall is my favorite time of year; with its mellow fruitfulness, flowers warm and fragrant in the sunshine, the harvest ripening in the fields, and the amber-tinted light suffuses the air with a warm glow and a bit of magic.  Lubin Epidor captures the the waning  days of summer as we begin the slow march into  autumn and gives me yet another reason to look forward to the season.

Notes: Violet, Plum Jasmine, Orange Blossom, Cedar, Sandalwood, Tonka Bean, Vanilla

  • This one sounds perfect for the fading golden days of summer heading into fall. Love the notes in this one and I am a fan of Lubin. So glad to see a post from you Tammy… look forward to more when the time is right.
Loved this “You will float around in this gilded aura for hours;” after all this is what I call the heavenly aura of fragrance.

  • What a glowing review. Isn’t a shimmering golden aura what we all want? Epidor from Parfums Lubin does sound like the perfect late summer to early autumn fragrance. Lubin has produced such an amazing catalogue of scents. My favorite so far is Indole (2011?) so decadent.

  • I love the description of that time, the cusp between summer and autumn. Here in Texas I’d usually be enjoying an Indian summer by now and getting the last enjoyment of laying by the pool in a gentler light. But instead it is relentless rain, rain, rain, I could use some golden sunlight! Thanks for the review. USA

  • What a beautiful description of those lazy hazy last days of summer. Tammy’s description makes one want to tilt back one’s head and feel the warmth of the sun before the cool days of autumn. I have no favorite Lubin scent although I have been thinking about getting one from this house. This sounds like quite possibly the one. Thanks for the draw. I live in the USA.

This is just beautifullyrics descriptive writing, always a treat, and specifically I love the seasonality of this fragrance in a True and intuited sense as opposed to sticking with the most obvious associations (like violets to spring, OH to summer). There’s a much more immediate sensory imaged quality because it seems so obvious that all the notes are super in cool weather once the writer brings you away from the most stock associations. And I do everything in terms of season/temperature, so these end up being very evocative and exciting reviews for me. Thanks for the lovely review and the chance to try what I’m sure is a really special perfume. I’m in the US.

  • Great article as usual. I wasn’t aware that Epidor was brought back or that Lubin has been around such a long time. I hadn’t thought of it as a fall scent. With the beautiful description of Fall here, it might make the end of summer more tolerable! It is a gorgeous scent. It is on my ever-growing FB list. My favorite Lubin is is Korrigan, closely followed by Upper Ten for her. No need to enter me in the draw as I have already been able to sample this.

What a lovely review! I also love the ‘mellow fruitfulness’ (a nice nod to one of my favorite poets, there!) of fall and think that a ‘boozy cloud of tonka bean’ that ‘gently [weaves] itself into a bed of sweetly scented hay’ sounds just about perfect. The only Lubin scent I know is the (newer) Idole, but I love it and covet a full bottle. I’ve also been very curious about Korrigan. I’m in the US and I’d love to be able to sample this scent. Thank you and thanks to all at Aedes for the chance!

Tammy’s review made me think about how I feel about September. As a kid, it was a month filled with dread because of the return to school and the end of summer. The shift of the seasons always brought on the worst colds and sore throats. Now that I am older I can appreciate things like the harvest, the changing glow of the sun, the smell of hay and the smell of autumn approaching. The best thing about getting older is noticing and appreciating the goodness of each season; seasonal dread disappears. I’d love to wear a perfume like Epidor while experiencing September.
I’ve always wanted to try Galaad from this line.

  • Epidor, spike of gold, is an intriguing name for a scent. The gold cap and the shape of the modern Lubin bottle engage the eye. Thank you to Tammy for sharing Epidor here on CaFleureBon. The gilded aura sounds especially nice for autumn. I have not tried anything from Lubin but just yesterday Nuit de Longchamp came to my attention. Now there is Epidor also prompting me to learn more about Lubin.

The photos of Audrey Hepburn were a visual treat. I like the updated CaFleureBon masthead, too. Thank you for the review and to Aedes de Venustas for the generous draw.

Wow, a warm orange blossom for fall sounds perfect. I am on an orange blossom kick lately, can’t get enough. One of my favorite vintages is Nahema – it’s just so beautiful.

  • I enjoyed Tammy’s review of this harvest-themed fragrance and its “shimmering golden aura” sounds beautiful. I have not yet had the pleasure of wearing a Lubin Paris fragrance.

  • THIS is what I liked the most about the review – Fall is my favorite time of year; with its mellow fruitfulness, flowers warm and fragrant in the sunshine, the harvest ripening in the fields, and the amber-tinted light suffuses the air with a warm glow and a bit of magic.
It is nearing Fall here, and it is also my favorite time of year. This quote just, spoke, to me.
I don’t have any of the Lubin fragrances, though I did obtain a sample of Real Ten for Her, i adored the raspberry/woody/rose fragrance. Not a big enough sample!
I’m in the US, thank you for offering this very generous draw.

I’d love to own Epidor, as I love violet and orange blossom. Audrey Hepburn’s beauty is the perfect choice to represent this fragrance from the elegant house of Lubin. I don’t as yet have a favorite Lubin fragrance. I’m in the US and thank you for
    this draw.
