New Fragrance Review: Amouage Figment Woman (Christopher Chong and Dorothée Piot) 2017 + Beyond Beautiful Draw

Christopher Chong, Creative Director of Amouage (courtesy of Amouage)

Bhutan is the last extant great Himalayan kingdom: tiny, remote, profoundly Buddhist in nature, and situated in the Eastern Himalayan mountain range with mighty China to its north and influential India to its south. Imagine a parliamentary democracy in which its monarch, the Dragon King – champions the concept of “gross national happiness”. It should come as no surprise, then – with lush vegetation and monasteries shrouded amidst the mountains – that Bhutan  proved a source of inspiration for Amouage's Creative Director Christopher Chong Figment Man and Figment Woman.

Bhutan carved image in rock

I've long dreamt of making a pilgrimage myself. ÇaFleureBon’s Contributing Editor Robert Herrmann recently sang you the Siren Song of Amouage Figment Man so lyrically: “liquid Shangri-La in a cerulean blue bottle”. Now we must attend to the women.

Jetsun Pema Queen of Bhutan

Amouage Figment Woman delivers a clarion of nose-tickling pepper and saffron – upon which are enthroned Voluptuous Gardenia and Queen Tuberose. The preliminary spicy fireworks step aside as we tumble into in The Garden.

Tuberoses (apped MC)

Profusions of indolent blossoms perfume the mist: ever-joyous jasmin sambac, exhibiting its customary generosity –  melds with orange blossom and the intricate embroidery of spicy lilies, frangipani, creamy and diffusive. A kiss of cinnamon underlines Figment's floral orientalism. Not too fast: another entire layer of intrigue awaits. That patina is verdant, woody, umame: salted with tendrils of incense. It burnishes Figment Woman with a fascinating component: papyrus.

Papyrus

Ancient and enigmatic, papyrus complements our marvelous mint (yes, mint) patchouli and silvery, woody-violet orris with the olfactory equivalent of umame: salty, sweet, mushroomlike, with notes of rye bread which dry down to a more arid woody / grain effect. This is what looms at the base of Figment's mountain of blooms and  wisps of spice. I find it heartrendingly graceful. It supports the initial moist floral abundance which feels mythically tropical and lush.

Scene from Figment Woman (from the video by Amouage)

In its own fashion, Figment Woman feels a fitting counterpart to Figment Man – that green land which time forgot, an unclaimed paradise.

Bhutanese beauty with textiles

I underestimated Figment Woman. She has showered me with one delight upon the heels of another.

Notes: Top: Sichuan pepper, saffron, gardenia; Heart: Tuberose, jasmin sambac, orange blossoms, Lisylang, cassia; Base: Orris, papyrus, patchouli, incense

Thanks to Amouage for my samples! Opinions are my own.

Lovely review, especially the description of the umami quality to this fragrance! There are so few fragrances that have a salty, umami flavor – so intrigued by this one. I would like to win Woman. My favorite Amouage is Epic Woman, it truy is epic! I am in the US.

I enjoy most of Amouage masterpieces, especially Oriental. My favorites are: Interlude Woman and Epic Woman. They are not so easy to wear, because they are too magnificent for our daily, trivial urban life. So for me Amouage is more like a sacred magic moments for myself to fly away to another world. I would love to have FIGMENT WOMAN, the vision of Bhutan and notes sound very promising. Favorite part of review: “enigmatic papyrus, marvelous mint patchouli and silvery, woody-violet orris with the olfactory equivalent of (salty)umame”. I live in the EU.

  • After reading this wonderful review I want to find out what umame in scent smells like and how this papyrus note is like. So I’d choose figment woman. My favorite amouage is Interlude woman and ciel woman (before reformulated ). Ciel is so beautiful in summer and Interlude so complex and unique while being beautiful too.
I live in Germany. Thanks for the review and draw!

  • I like this expression from the review : “jasmin sambac, exhibiting its customary generosity”.
If I win, I choose Figment Man.

  • The perfect mixing of green, verdant paradise and sultry lushness…Seems so very promising!
I love many many Amouage creations: Memoir man, Gold woman, Opus VII are the first ones who come to my mouth.
I’d like very much to recive Figment Woman!

    I live in Italy.
As usual, thanks for the draw!

  • What a poetic review and beautifully writing. I miss this style now that videos are so popular. Mrs. Meister has taken me to Bhutan and I can smell the spices and white flowers. Papyrus is new to me so I am very curious about it.
I live on the US and my favorites are Gold woman, opus III and honour woman
I would love the figment woman.
    Thank you for the drawing

Great read! The whole review is enjoyable, and the beauties of Bhutan are wonderful. These two statements are appealing the best. “In its own fashion, Figment Woman feels a fitting counterpart to Figment Man – that green land which time forgot, an unclaimed paradise. I underestimated Figment Woman. She has showered me with one delight upon the heels of another.” My favorite Amouage fragrance is Interlude Man followed by Jubilation 25.
Thanks to Amouage & Christopher Chong for the generosity, and CafleureBon for the opportunity by letting my relative address in US. My choice is Figment Man

I like that the fragrance will start with a bang (fireworks) and go into the garden. As a home baker, the rye note really interests me and how it will go with the patchouli. My favorite from Amouge is Journey Woman. I would love to win the Figment Woman. Thanks for the great review and stunning photography.

  • gregorysop says:

Bhutan, Himilayas, Buddist Monks and a journey across gods country…sounds like a job for Amouage MAN! Seriously a manly adventure requires a unique fragrance that can handle the pressure. Amouage is a great house and their fragrances always show quality. Sign me up to win the Amouage MAN.

  • Just when you think every possible combination of tuberose perfume has already been done…papyrus! The description of umame as containing rye bread was eye catching and accurate, well done. My favorite Amouage so far is Honour Woman (love my tubey!)

I’d prefer Figment Woman and I’m in the USA.

Like I said previously for Figment Man, I really like the bottle color and box pattern; Very creative selection of pattern and colors for the fragrance box.
From the house I have only tried Jubilation XXV and Interlude. I like Jubilation more, but I need more projection and longevity of it.

  • Figment Woman sounds nice with all the blooming flowers, but I’m afraid it could be too feminine for me, so I would like to try Figment Man instead. Love the color on the bottles, it’s gorgeous. My favorite Amouage is probably Dia Man. Thanks, I live in the EU.

  • Lellabelle says:

Great review and the Bhutan images are beautiful. I’d love to win either of these, man or woman! If I were lucky enough to win man, it would be a gift for my wonderful husband, who supports my perfume obsession and whose signature is JXXV. Figment woman I would keep for myself. The note structure for both looks amazing and I’m exited about this new release. Thanks for the review and the draw. US please.
