New Perfume Review:  UNUM Io Non Ho Mani Che Mi Accarezzino Il Volto (Fillipo Sorcinelli) 2017+ There are No Hands To Caress my Face Draw

Filippo Sorcinelli, photo by Yuri Kolesnikov

With his melancholy El Greco features, courtier’s beard and linear, diagrammatic tattoos, UNUM founder and creative director Filippo Sorcinelli seems to have walked from the court of Lorenzo de Medici straight into a minimalist art gallery, carrying fragments of the past into the present with him. His latest perfume, Io Non Ho Mani Che Mi Accarezzino Il Volto (There Are No Hands To Caress My Face), draws its inspiration from photographer Mario Giacomelli’s remarkable 1961 series of the same name showing young Episcopal seminarians in unconventional situations: glissading through the snow in their black woolen cloaks, pillow fighting, dancing in a circle. Io Non Ho Mani Che Mi Accarezzino Il Volto, too, feels unconventional yet, from time to time, familiar, like a catch of music you cannot quite remember the tune of.  It is simultaneously sepia and black-and-white, a marrying of notes plucked from different points in time.

In its early moments, Io Non Ho Mani Che Mi Accarezzino Il Volto shapeshifts: An idiosyncratic accord of myrrh, peppery geranium, clary sage, and a cinnamon I first mistook for clove gives an immediate illusion of smokiness. This is underscored by the quick emergence of ecclesiastical incense and pipe tobacco, rich and cherryish, like an illicit puff of pipe smoke in the back of a church. UNUM won’t divulge the name of the nose behind their perfumes, but no one, with the exception of Mark Buxton, can work such magic with incense.

Despite the swirl of seemingly disparate aromas, there is stillness in their progression. It is worth noting that this perfume is as much about the photographer as it is about his art: his bag of tobacco, the metal of his camera lens.  As I raise my wrist to my nose again close my eyes, I find myself seated in a man’s study, a recently smoked pipe resting on a creaking table. A moment later, inhaling the perfume again, I am struck by its modern facets, the arid amber hit of ambroxan, the metallic, halogen air of a brightly lit gallery of photographs.

The second stage brings forward the woody notes and intensifies the tobacco, which alters from moist and smoky-fruity to the leathery and pencil shavings aspects of the dried leaf. Cedar acts as a floorboard to the tobacco and smokiness, subdued, having the mellow, worn aroma of the arms of an old desk chair. But again, the music changes, and I get a smell of bottled ink, turpenic and mineral mingling with the incense, woods and spicy notes.

The dry-down brings Io Non Ho Mani Che Mi Accarezzino Il Volto contrasting qualities together, its edges softening though not blurring. While most perfumes present incense with recognizable churchlike qualities, Io Non Ho Mani Che Mi Accarezzino Il Volto offers two parallel incenses: the literal clouds of the censers and an illusory, almost alien ashy-resinous invented by the strange opening notes combining with tobacco. The effect is like a doppelganger or mirrors facing each other: one track familiar, comfortable, lovely; the other oblique, radical, strange. The combination of the two as they marry in the dry-down is as quietly arresting and surreally beautiful as the young priests of Giacomelli’s photographs.

Notes: Petit grain, bergamot, galbanum, myrrh, cedarwood, geranium, clary sage, cinnamon leaves, styrax, ylang-ylang, incense, benzoin, tonka beans, tobacco absolute, amber (ambroxan), sandalwood.

  • As a (partially) incense based fragrance, is INHoMaCheMAIV (Io Non Ho Mani Che Mi Accarezzino Il Volto, of course) even more
    transcendent than L.A.V.S ?

Is INHoMaCheMAIV even more sublime than L.A.V.S ?

Is INHoMaCheMAIV even more soothing than L.A.V.S ?

Is INHoMaCheMAIV even more intoxicating than L.A.V.S ?

Is INHoMaCheMAIV even more inspiring than L.A.V.S ?

Is it only possible ? Is it only thinkable ?!

    I need to know…

Lauryn, absolutely riveting review, I am entranced and beguiled. I love all the fragrances, but this one is just downright intruiging.
It has created a yearning that will not be extinguished until it’s upon my wrist and I can travel incognito as it weaves its tale. Unfortunately I am at the ends of the earth so I will have to source this elsewhere.
Your writing is sublime, thank you for the journey.

  • This sounds absolutely gorgeous, and I love the artworks chosen for this tantalizing review. I feel like I can smell this already. Thanks for the draw and review – I’m in Canada. 🙂

I like the concept of contrasts and the selection of art work for this review is awesome. What an interesting group of notes have been put together. I look forward to sniffing this. Thanks for the draw. I live in the USA

  • Holy cow. What an amazing review. Absolutely love this House and LAVS is my favorite.
This was my favorite part of the review.

I love the creations of Filippo Sorcinelli and his personal artistic and human research. His sensitivity in handling the incense enchants me. This one sounds great and its name in Italian is really poetic and evocative as the images to which it refers. Bravo!
I am fond of LAVS, a masterpiece.

I love the artistic work of Mario Giacomelli, the great photographer to which Unum’s new creation is dedicated. I’m very familiar with Senigallia, Giacomelli’s hometown, where he spent his entire life and produced the masterpieces we admire in the museums all over the world.
And I think Filippo Sorcinelli work captures in a wonderful way the essence of Giacomelli’s work and human presence.
A real conversation between to souls devoted to art.
    I love Opus 1144.
I’m a registered reader, and I live in Italy. Thank you!

  • The moment you enter the church in hot day. The church is enormous, quite dark and you immediately can smell the united scent of old walls, flowers and something… magical. You don’t want to pray but you cannot move, remain silent and speechless. That is Opus 1144, my most favourite of Lavs.
Wait…you can see a priest… is he playing with the cat? The cat in church?

Given the origins of the brand, it seems natural that Io Non Ho Mani Che Mi Accarezzino Il Volto has been inspired by Mario Giacomelli’s series of the same name. The fragrance’s opening stage and later the emergence of notes like tobacco makes it feel like quite a gothic scent, just like the pictures that inspired it. My favorite UNUM fragrance is LAVS. I am in the U.S.

  • adoro questo profumo come tutte le creazioni
di filippo, un artista a tutto tondo ❤️

  • I have never tried any of Unum perfume, but those are sounds interesting. Io Non Ho Mani Che Mi Accarezzino Il Volto sounds very unusual and unique from the review. The cap of the bottle looks very strange. I would like to win this unique perfume. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • Tobacco and incense ! And those photos of the young priests. A great review to read on Good Friday.
Whether I win or not I must have this new Unum. Io Non Ho Mani Che Mi Accarenzino Il Volto sounds totally unique. I am a fan of Lavs but who isn’t ?
I live in the US and am registered.

  • What a long name! I haven’t tried any of Unum fragrances, though Lavs sounds great and I know it’s highly speak of.
I enjoyed the review and I like most of the notes in the description and how they evolve during the stages.

  • Okay I had to do a little research on this Photographer. The subject material, maybe not that unorthodox. Marrying it with a scent… incense and pipe tobacco notes notwithstanding strikes me as a stretch. The name of the series … so fey. So many contradictions here. Like I said — a stretch. US resident

Being a man reading the blog, I generally just comment on unisex colognes such as this one. It is a very unique and complex blend of many scents. I am interesting in seeing if the sum of the parts ( i am very partial to many of its components) is greater. Thanks for the draw.

  • The name of the perfume and the photography series is taken from the title of a poem by Father David Maria Turoldo, an English translation of I include below. Giacomelli, and now Sorcinelli, used it as a reference to the isolated lives of the priesthood. Even those these images may not seem so radical now, bear in mind that in 1961, in Italy, photographing young priests in this manner was startling. (The senior priest at seminary where these were taken was so outraged by them that Giacomelli was banned from ever entering it again).

    “THERE ARE NO HANDS

    There are no hands
    to caress my face,
    (hard is the office
    of these words
    whiich do not know love)
I do not know the sweetness of
    your abandonment:
    I had to be the
    guardian
    of your loneliness:
    I’m a
    savior
    of lost hours.”

  • Tobacco, incense and a complex evolution. It sounds amazing! I live in the U.S. Thanks for the great review and drawing.

  • cardinalmind says:

Tobacco is one of my problematic notes but this is paired with amber and some incense so I’m hopeful that will be the one that will spark my love for tobacco based scents. I trust Ms. Beer since what I got to smell before was a fantastic one, and this one looks good enough to even out my uneasiness about tobacco.

I’m in the US. Haven’t smelled any Unum perfume. Thanks for the chance!

  • I was not familiar with UNUM perfumes. This one looks like every few minutes it is changing. Quite interesting!
Thanks for the review, info and draw. Live in the US.

  • Another new (to me) perfume line! I like the sound of the heart notes where tobacco and woods play. Thanks for the review and draw. I amin USA

  • Christina M says:

I was drawn in to the idea and concept by the description alone and could not have written a more poetic description than you. It is truly a juxtaposition and is absolutely magnificent.

It is the only Unum scent I have tried to date but am adding the rest to my “must try” list for samples.

I am in the US and would be so thrilled if I were the lucky winner !

  • doveskylark says:

The notes of the fragrance sound mysterious–especially the ambroxan. Tobacco, pencil shavings, incense, turpentine–did I get that right? I checked the website. It is a work of art. I’d love to try Ennui Noir. And of course this one in the draw.
    i live in the USA.

  • I love when fragrances transport people to a specific place, time..

So when Lauryn was taken to a man’s tobacco filled study with metallic, ambroxan lit photography, that hooked me.!

this will be my first UNUM fragrance.

    I live in USA.

  • I love that Unum is doing incense as I already love the Sauf Bombarde 32 an artistic project of Filippo Sorcinelli, Unum creator. All three of the Sauf fragrances are fabulous Incense creations, so I can only imagine how beautiful this one will be. The notes in this one speak to me. As far as the Unum line I adore Opus 1144 a stunner and get compliments everytime I wear it. Underrated perfume house , people should really try these wonderful artistic wearable fragrances. Thank you for the kind draw, I would to be entered. I am in the US

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Another SUPERB review! Lauryn Beer described the perfume, Io Non Ho Mani Che Mi Accarezzino Il Volto in a blanket of the posted photographs, which is amazing. This perfume is as much about the photographer, the woody notes that changes in the middle stage and the dry down contrasting qualities to arrest you in strange and comfort is fascinating. The notes are right up my alley.
I have a decant of Opus 1144 which I really enjoy wearing it. LAVS and Rosa Nigra on my want list including this one.
Thanks to the generosity of UNUM and Cafleurebon for the opportunity to participate in the draw by letting my relative address in US.

  • Interesting review, Lauryn! I’m curious about the myrrh and cinnamon combo. I haven’t tried any perfumes from this line.
    Thanks for the chance!

  • ntabassum92 says:

The two types of incense are so intriguing. One seems more traditionally associated with religious ceremonies, and one more modern and smoky in a different way. So interesting how smoke can take on so many hues. I’m in the US, and have never tried any Unum perfumes!

  • Great review, I like the smokiness and warmness of this scent. I haven’t tried anything from this house but this scent sounds great! I’m in Canada and thanks for the draw

  • Ambery, green and incense….sounds wonderful. Im always interested when people try and use petit grain. When its used well its so good:) Ive not tried this house yet but would love to win. Im in the USA. Thanks for the chance
