The relationship between Master Perfumer Rodrigo Flores Roux and Vice President of Perfumery for Givaudan  with John Varvatos dates from 2002.  I met Rodrigo  in 2008 at a John Varvatos Press event and he told me , “I met John Varvatos back in 2002 through Brian Robinson, at that time, owner of Zirh…John feels very comfortable talking perfume with me, and I consider working with him not only an enormous pleasure, but also a privilege and a great challenge to tackle, as he is always raising the bar. John’s approach is unique: “I’ll know it when I smell it…” and if I may add, I feel privileged as he listens to me a lot. I do the same and we communicate easily and freely”

Rodrigo wrote me about the creative process for Dark Rebel Rider, “My aim was to express olfactively the intense pleasure that leather gives the wearer. And also I wanted to convey a bit of luxe/ retro feeling of a Cuir base giving a wink to classic leather fragrances’.  For those readers and viewers who may not know, John Varavatos bought CBGB OMFUG, the legendary rock and punk  club in 2008 turning it into a retail space for all John Varvatos merchandise.

The ramones at CBGB 1970s leather jackets

The Ramones got their start at CBGB OMFUG in 1974 as did The Beastie Boys, and The Talking Heads

Every New Yorker of a certain age went there, even me, up until the club doors shut to music in 2006, when Patti Smith performed her last concert in October of that year.  Back then it was the best rock/punk club in the city and  bands like the Ramones, aka four guys in leather jackets, Blondie, The Police, The Talking Heads and the Beastie Boys to name a few  (I was there in 1982,  back then I had pink streaks in my hair and a nose piercing) played there.   Michelyn Camen, Editor in Chief

  • I am excited about this scent because Sebastian says Dark Rebel Rider has much of a niche fragrance quality in it. Smooth and soft leather sounds great. Thank you for the draw. I live in the EU.

  • I am excited to smell the leather and Kakao noted together and I’m also excited to determine if it smells like a niche quality scent

  • I really liked Sebastian’s review of this fragrance….it intrigued me with the fall and winter on the horizon, I want to keep my eye for the darker scents coming out. I have never tried a Varvatos product but I’d love for this to be the first. I live in San Diego, CA….thanks.

  • WOW! Sebastian’s review was great!!! Would *LOVE* to try it! I’m in Canada. Cheers!

I recently start to enjoy leather fragrances. A mix of leather, cacao and all the other notes that Sebastian listed in his last video, sounds good to me! Salutations from Canada.

  • I love leather and cacao notes. This sounds like a complex fragrance and I can’t wait to try it. Thank you Sebastian and Cafleurebon for the giveaway.

  • Mike Gillespie says:

As a newer subscriber I am really enjoying your videos Sebastian. I love the Original Dark Rebel so it would be great to win a chance to smell this new one. Keep up the good work Sebastian as I tend to agree with a lot of your reviews. Thanks again

I noticed Sebastian wearing leather jacket immed. and could see why he has chosen for this particular review. Sebastian notes JV fragrances are unique and not like other designer fragrances. In addition, this frag. seems to have DNA of other JV fragrances such as leather and cacao. It is also not hard like some other similar fragrances but smooth. I have Dark Rebel so naturally interested in this flanker. Thanks for the draw. I am in NY.

  • Leather and cacao notes sound very promising, I think I have never smelled this combination before. I’d love to try both Dark Rebel and Dark Rebel Rider. Thank you for the draw. I live in the EU.

  • Wow, a niche quality in a designer fragrance! Yes, this kind of a miracle happens, and more often than we think. Can’t wait to test DRR and smell it with my own nose.

Thanks for the review and the draw. I am in the EU.

  • Jeff Miller says:

This sounds incredible. I always enjoy leather fragrances so this is pretty intriguing. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • Sebastian’s review is a surprise. The name Dark Rebel Rider and the bottle design conjures bad-A, loud, and aggressive hwr Sebastian’s review says otherwise by “sits close to the skin”. Nevertheless the leather and chocolate notes sound hot.

  • I really appreciate the honesty of Sebastians reviews! He inspired me to try different fragrances that I haven’t heard of before, and they all smell amazing!

as for Dark rebel rider, I’m really intrested in trying this fragrance. I agree with Sebastian that John Varvatos fragrances have a niche quality and they all smell very unique compared to other designer fragrances.

Leather is one of my favourite notes along side with tobacco, patchouli, cacao and vanilla. Dark rebel rider have 4 of my favourite notes, which makes me extra excited to try it out 🙂

I live in Malmö, Sweden. Hopefully, I will win a 10ml

    Thanks.

  • I like the “refined, smooth” description. I have tried many John Varvatos fragrances. I like some leather fragrances, generally the moderately leathery ones. I have been to CBGBs. USA

  • Nice review Sebastian, I love leather fragrances but I know what you mean about some of them being “rough” around the edges, so I’d like to try this smoother cut. And to see what the saffron note is like – saffron’s so hot right now, am I right? Also I am a girl, but I like to think I have a bad boy image. I haven’t been to CBGB’s, but I’ve visited the Varvatos store in Yorkdale in Toronto, I like his stuff, not just clothes but accessories too. I am in Canada.

  • Hope this is a winner. In Chicago. I love a good leather scent, especially in the winter time. Saffron is always interesting as well.

  • Arsenal1886 says:

Great review! Sounds like a great smelling fragrance that won’t overpower the room.
I like leather fragrances and I have tried Dark Rebel and quite enjoyed it. I would love to win and try Dark Rebel Rider.

  • Nice review. Never heard about Dark Rebel rider until now and I like that it smells niche and isn’t typical. can be worn to the office and isn’t too heavy
    My favorite is varvatos vintage

  • Love Varvatos, fragrances and clothing line. I absolutely love leather scents. Would love to get my nose on this. Most likely will blindbuy this, irrespective of the contest. Thank you for the draw. NYC here.

  • What I like about Sebastian’s reviews, pretty much as always, is the format. It’s not too long or too short. Except for the official note breakdown(Which I would skip if I was him) it’s all about his own personal opinion and I like that. I actually have two homes, my main one in Canada and I have a secondary one in the US (Kentucky). Leather is not usually my favorite notes but there are some exceptions, like Tuscan Leather from Tom Ford is one of my 2-3 favorite fragrances ever. I’ve tried every Varvatos fragrance thus far. 🙂

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Pretty cool video and review. No doubt John Varvatos bottles are beautiful but the juices lack in longevity & sillage. Heard some good news about this Dark Rebel Rider performance, smell, longevity & sillage; and your review confirm about it. Dark Rebel Rider seems suitable for office IMO.
Leather is one of my favorite note in perfumes & would love to win a 10ml decant.
    Thanks for generosity & draw.

  • I like Dark Rebel and I’m looking forward to try the Rider version. It has a great bottle and promising notes (leather, saffron, olibanum…). Thank you Sebastian for the review and the draw 🙂 EU.

  • Well, to be honest I’ve never tried any John Varvbatos fragrance just because I would never thought I can find anything interesting among them. Looks like I’ve been mistaken and should verify my opinion about designer fragrances, or at least some of them. Sebastian’s review suggests that I may like Dark Rebel Rider, since it is leathery and stays close to the skin, sparing the wearer the overwhelming effect.

I’ll try also the original version, sounds like it has a potential too.

  • Great review Sebastian! I have never tried a JV fragrance in the past even though i have heard a lot about Dar Rebel. I would be excited to put my nose on this new release!

  • Wonderful review, Sebastian always make very good video reviews. Dark Rebel Rider sounds absolutely gorgeous. I would very like to try that. Thanks for the draw. I live in the EU.

  • Marcopietro says:

I’ve always appreciated in Varvatos fragrances the wearability combined with the quality of materials. i love too their packaging always constant in the forms but renovated in the image. This one goes further in the same direction. Great review! For a fan of leather fragrances like me it sounds amazing and so attractive.

  • Jorge Franco says:

After i watched Sebastian’s John Varvatos Dark Rebel Rider Review i can’t wait to get my hands on this juice, nice oolink bottle aswell.. Here is your winner from Canada..!Cheers

  • I like how Sebastian said that its a smooth leather and can be worn in different situations etc….Quite a few leather frags are tough to wear in multiple situations. So this sounds like a leather I would enjoy.

As always, thanks for the chance….Im up here in Canada

  • Wow this sounds awesome especially with the leather notes. I hope I can have the opportunity to Try this. I’m in NYC

  • Miss Almond says:

Sounds really nice. I love leather jackets and while not every leather perfume turns out to be wearable, this one looks like the scent I’d like. Thanks for the interesting review! I live in the EU.

  • I really like his new camera, haha.
I like the way he described the scent and that the scent is not so in your face, I like leather fragrances, but I get nauseous if they’re too strong.
I have tried Varvatos fragrances, but just in passing. I must pay a visit to my local sephora just for this line. 🙂

I loved this new video, and the new editing style 🙂
I am a huge fan of leather and I love to try out new kinds of leather fragrances, I have been a real fan of John Varvatos as of lately and can’t agree more with Sebastian, Some of the latest from John Varvatos really do have a niche feel to them, I absolutely love dark rebel, it has garnered me many compliments. I was really impressed with John Varvatos Oud, and John Varvatos Platinum, both of those had a vey niche feel to them. I would love to try a sample of Dark Rebel Rider. Thank You again Cafleurebon for the generosity of the giveaway :),

  • cinnamon tree says:

If Sebastian says it’s an interesting and underestimated scent, I must try it. Love the leathery notes and leather-covered bottles. Thank you for the giveaway. I live in the EU.

  • I enjoyed about Sebastian’s review as he is always so descriptive of the fragrance . I live in canada. I am a fan of leather fragrances and I have tried a the Vintage John Varvatos.

  • I enjoy Sebastians review. I actually tried the other Varvatos Rebel fragrance based off his other review:) I do like leather fragrances and this has some cacao so hurray:) I live in the USA:)

  • Sounds great. Somehow every fragrance inspired by motorcycle riders world blends very well with my skin. I like that there is so much spices and herbs in this one. I’d love to try it. Thank you for the draw! I live in the EU.

  • doveskylark says:

I like that Sebastian pointed out the cacao note. I don’t usually like that note in fragrance, but I am intrigued. I have never tried any Varvatos fragrances or visited his stores. I love leather fragrances, especially Hard Leather by LM Perfums. I never did get ti CBGB, but I used to park in the lot next to it whenever I drove into the city. I live in the USA.

  • Great review again. I’ve tried quite a few from John Varvatos. My favorite at the moment is Vintage. I look forward to smelling this new release! I’m in Canada

  • Loved Sebastian’s review, very interesting. I think I would like this – would love to try it. For my husband too! Sounds like he would like it as well since Sebastian said it wore close to the skin. Love leathery fragrances. My favorite Varvatos? Blu.
I’m in the US – in a small town in Michigan. Thanks for the draw.

  • Great review! I’ve never tried a fragrance from this house so I’d love to try.

  • Hi Sebastian. I enjoyed your review very much and liked Dark Rebel as well . This is going to be in my wish list from now on. Wondering if the Silage and duration would be better with the Rider. Fron Houston TX
