The theme of the eight edition of Esxence the Scent of Excellence, the worldwide exhibition for artistic perfumery held in Milan this past March was Endless imagination and creativity.  I had the opportunity to reunite with three of my favorite independent perfumers who embody the show's theme.

From Berlin,  Geza Schoen is well known for his own brands Escentric Molecules, A Beautiful Mind Series, Kinski and Wode Boudicca and has collaborated with Ormonde Jayne, Clive Christian and more.  In 2006, Geza  overdosed  65% of the synthetic molecule Iso E Super to create the first “anti-perfume",  the CaFleureBon  Modern Masterpiece Escentric 01 (neo-synthetics are currently en vogue 10 years later).  GAMECHANGER

Mark Buxton was born in Derby England and in addition to his eponymous line Mark Buxton, has quite a portfolio including including the CaFleureBon Modern Masterpiece CDG 2 Men for Comme des Garcons, Chopard, Linari, Ferre, Kapsule for Karl Lagerfeld,  Givenchy, Burberry, Jil Sander to name a few. Bertrand Duchaufour  grew up in Nancy, France is one of the most prolific and talented perfumers of the last 15 years and is best known for L’Artisan Parfumeur, Penhaligon’s,  as well as for his work for Eau d’Italie, Neela Vermeire Creations, Comme des Garcons, Amouage and The Different Company.  I believe that this is M. Duchaufour’s first fragrance under his own signature. GAMECHANGER 

All three are classically trained perfumers that broke free of the corporate world and have gone on to huge success. They are very different in style.  Knowing each of them, they are different in personality as well, but they have one thing in common… maybe they are just a bit “crazy”, in the best possible way. With Project Renegades, Geza, Mark and Bertrand have created three fragrances outside of the ordinary perfume box. I wish I had been there to hear the wild imaginings and conversations when they had the idea of Project Renegades, with the tripped out packaging, strange cowboy avatars (that double as kitchen magnets).

 Contributor Sebastian Jara of the YouTube Channel Looking Feeling Smelling Great, and founder of a popular Facebook Group reviews each "perfumer gone rogue" fragrance in  this video.
