Love is sharing… To share your life, to share your possessions and even your perfume. So the most suitable scents for Valentine’s Day are the shared ones. Bond No.9’s New York  Patchouli created in 2013 for Creative Director Laurice Rahme, is a perfect example of a shared fragrance. Musk, rose and patchouli have always appealed to both men and women and they always will.  New York Patchouli is one of the best combinations of these notes in perfume history.

Since I’m writing about “shared notes”, amber is probably the most “shared” ever. Creating an amber fragrance that’s suitable for both genders has always been a challenge. It has to be seductive, warm, yet comfortable.  Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114, created in 2001, is a reference amber perfume that in my book is all about love, coziness and warmth and is one of three tomes in Gerald Ghislain’s Cult Books. The sensuous touch of vanilla and benzoin dials it up a notch to “let’s stay under the covers this weekend” territory. –Berkan Basoglu, Contributor and author of Gurme kokular

Tom Ford Private Blend – Noir de Noir, created by master perfumer Harry Fremont of Firmenich in 2007,  is one of the sexiest, darkest fragrances in my collection. Noir de Noir is rose dominant but the rose is not really an in your face rose! There’s something dark and mysterious about this rose scent! It’s earthy, but creamy/chocolatey at the same time and who wouldn’t love chocolates and roses for Valentine’s Day? It’s the perfect scent to be worn by couples on the most romantic day of the year. –Sebastian Jara, Contributor and YouTube fragrance reviewer for Looking Feeling Smelling Great

 hearts on concrete

Vero Profumo Onda Extrait from perfumer Vero Kern (2008) is like a magnetic encounter, it’s all about opposites attracting, odd and beautiful. Moist roots dip into honey enrapture with smells of hay and harness fading into the ones of a suite: Biedermeier furniture, two unlikely lovers rolled in silk sheets, the sparkling air at dusk and finally the eloquence of a knowing look vanishing behind the last cigarette, before they say goodbye.

Love is sharing the primitive paradise hidden in our heart, letting our partner enjoy the golden light of desire and sensuality. It’s not difficult to guess what Creative Director DelRae Roth and Michel Roudnitska imagined when creating Parfums DelRae Bois de Paradis in 2002. Its discreet yet deep embrace of roses, lush vegetation and ripe fruits never disappoints and its beauty and is moving, no matter if a modern day Adam or Eve is wearing it.  It wasn’t an apple that tempted Adam in The Garden of Eden; it must have been the scent of Bois de Paradis. – Ermano Picco, Contributor and  Author of La gardenia nell occhiello

La Vie Parisenne Illustration by Cheri Herouard 1928

Is there anything more romantic than a walk in the woods?  Maybe dessert at dusk as your lover feeds you rich, dark chocolate as the light from the sunset filters through the tall branches. Created in 2013, by Ellen Covey, this is what Olympic Orchids Seattle Chocolate is all about – dark, rich chocolate trimmed in Balsam fir, tree sap and black Bourbon vanilla. Perfect scent for both those who think camping is sexy and for those who rather stay in a four star hotel in the mountains.

I’m the type of person who loves strawberries in anything.  Strawberries are a must-have treat any way I can get them – in desserts, salads, sauces, and yes, in perfume also. Which is why I Profumi di Firenze’s Plenilunio,  released in 2012, is my absolute favorite strawberry perfume.  Mandarin oranges at the top, a ripe, young fresh strawberry heart, and some light ambers and musks to finish.  The name translates to Full Moon, and my sweetheart absolutely howls in delight when I wear it. Plenilunio could easily be layered with Seattle Chocolate and turn anyone who wears them together into a human Dark Chocolate-Dipped Strawberry, and if that doesn’t smell like romance, I don’t know what does.  Pam Barr, Sr Contributor

Daniel Josier, Josune. What better way to express ones love than with a fragrance inspired by the true love of the perfumer-his wife.  Composed in 2015, Josune begins with wonderfully blended notes of white crisp jasmine, romantic rose buds, and bergamot with a sweet and tender base of musk and praline. The perfect scent for the perfect love.

Amouage, Lyric Man  composed in 2008, is words of romance transformed into scent. Crisp rose and incense deliver the perfect intimate aroma for the man whose heart beats for one and one only.  –The Nosey Artist, Sr Contributor

picasso flower bouquet 1958

Picasso Hands with a  Bouquet 1958

1000 by Jean Patou is romantic and full of nostalgia,  one of the greats from the great Jean Kerléo released in 1972.  It starts out big and bright with a rose bouquet to die for. Thank you for the flowers, darling.   Among the roses are random florals (muguet and  jasmine) that hardly fade as the romance continues to get deeper and more seductive the more you get to know it.  In the end the lights go down and a seductively appointed patchouli and civet come out making for a love affair to remember-as it’s dirty in the nicest of terms.  Romantic bliss in a bottle that’s a little naughty, but not too naughty.  –Aaron Potterman, Contributor

La femme en Noir (1980 – René Gruau)

No. 26 Isparta (Parfumerie Générale) : You can’t go wrong  with  a rose perfume for Valentine’s Day. We want a rose scent that is as far from innocent and dewy as possible.  Isparta is a deep sexy rose dusted with dusky patchouli and covered in purple jam. This vivid, deep rose is almost sticky, as though it has been caramelized, but not overtly sweet. Some perfumes make us linger a little longer, and really savor the experience; Pierre Guillaume’s Isparta, created in 2014 is a rare breed, indeed.  –Michelyn Camen, Editor in Chief with Bettina Korp, Contributor

vintage pin up girl red head valentine's day

Vintage Valentine’s Day Pin Up Girl Flora Smith, 1948

As a perfumista, I’m always disappointed that most florists’ roses are devoid of scent, so on Valentine’s Day I anoint myself with my favorite rose perfume, Annick Goutal Rose Absolue.   Rose Absolue was created in 1984, by Annick Goutal herself, as a tribute to her favorite flower. What better day to wear a perfume dedicated to beauty and eternal femininity? Then, just before my husband gets home, I’ll intensify the romance factor even further by transitioning over to the exquisite N’aimez Que Moi  by the incomparable House of  Caron. Created in 1916 by Ernest Daltrof, N’Aimez Que Moi has a history as rich as its fragrance. French soldiers gave this beautiful perfume to their sweethearts before they left for the battlefields of WWI, as a way to keep love alive across endless miles. Lush with Caron’s signature rose, tender with violets, warmed by sandalwood and amber, N’Aimez Que Moi is truly unforgettable. –Tammy Schuster, Contributor

What can I say…I want a little bling on Valentine’s Day. Neela Vermeire Creations Bombay Bling, composed in 2011 by Bertrand Duchaufour with Neela Vermeire is a unique take on my much beloved fruity florals. Mango tangos with black currant in the opening number  Rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang, tuberose, frangipani, and gardenia petals rain down on the audience as  I dance  center stage in an extravagant Bollywood production. But it’s that sexy sexy drydown of sandalwood and vanilla that turns Bombay Bling from a flirt into a femme-fatale. Raucous, joyous but hang out the do not disturb sign. –Michelyn Camen, Editor in Chief

  • I love Noir de Noir and agree with Sebastians comment. I have not experienced many of the others listed besides Lyric Man, but would love to try any of them. Thank you again for opportunity:)

  • Noir de Noir is one of my all time fave frags, and I love Isparta and Ambre 114 as well. i’d love to win that, along with Seattle Chocolate, AG Rose Absolute (which, shockingly, this rose-lover has never tried!!) or Bombay Bling.

Love the idea of “shared” frags on Valentine’s Day. In the US

  • This was a great article that left me swooning for all of my favorite rose fragrances. My favorites if the ones mentioned in this article are: TFPB Noir de Noir, Bond No 9 New York Patchouli, Ambre 114, and Bombay Bling!

Some of my favorites that weren’t mentioned are: Guerlain Rose Barbare, Amouage Lyric Woman, Le Labo Rose 31, Kilian Rose Oud, and Hermes Rose Ikebana.

I would love to win: Bond No 9 New York Patchouli, Bombay Bling, Ambrette 114, Josune, or Bois de Paradis. I live in the US and thanks for the draw!

  • Anything that brings a bit of love into the world is wonderful and the delicious Covey masterpiece Seattle Chocolate is does that for me.

  • Check my last comment. I guess if I need to list ones more specifically that Id like to try Id really be interested in Olympic Orchids Seattle Chocolate. I love chocolate or chocolate smelling notes in fragrances and having some woodsy an vanilla notes to go with it sounds wonderful. Thanks again for drawing.

  • Generous draw! VD = my birthday, so always extra loaded with hopes/expectations. Love all your picks, and as always, love your graphic choices! I have two go-to sexy picks in my wardrobe: ENVY by Gucci; and CUMMING (yes an unfortunate double entendre, but it IS his name!).
Of the goodies in the draw, I would be tickled to win Josune; Seattle Chocolate; Bombay Bling; or Plenilunio. I am in NYC, the Big Apple!

  • Wow – I haven’t tried most on this list but they all really look amazing! I’d absolutely love to try all of the following:
    Josune
    Bombay Bling
    Bond No.9’s New York Patchouli
    Annick Goutal Rose Absolue
    N’Aimez Que Moi
    Bois De Paradis
    Plenilunio

I don’t think any of the scents I have are really ‘sexy’ scents – maybe the closest is Gold Leather. I’d love to try some more Valentine’s Day appropriate scents! Thanks for this generous draw, I’m in the US.

  • Oh so many of these sound wonderful especially Bombay Bling and New York Patchouli because they don’t seem like what I would think of for Valentine’s Day. Caron is a great house and Naimez que moi is so hard to find and so special
Bois de Paradis also because of Michel Roudnitska and Adam temptation
    Those are my choices
Happy Valentine’s Day from chilly New England

  • Now, I’m both asexual and aromantic so this holiday means very little to me… and romanticc scents are not generally my thing… And I hate rose! But sensual, even skanky, that is very definitely my sort of thing! And I do love a gourmand, so chocolate, yeah I’m a fan. Of the ones you mention my only love is Seattle Chocolate, though Bombay Bling might have enough sultry floral to entice me… and Bois de aradis might suprise me. If I were to choose a sensual scent for Valentines Day though, I would go with either the sweet cherry wine and cacao of Slumberhouse Zahd, or the elegant mink fur of Xerjoff Mamluk.

Please enter me in the drawing for:

    Seattle Chocolate
    Bombay Bling

    I’m in the EU, Finland.

  • Bois de Paradis is totally calling to me. And, as in love, sometimes the waiting is the best part 🙂
Rose is a tricky one for me, so the TF Noir de Noir interests me, as does Onda and the love poem that is Josune. I’d love to try the Seattle Chocolate too.
    Please enter me for:
    Bois de Paradis
    Josune
    Seattle Chocolate
    Ambre 114
    USA or Canada

  • This a fun post and lovely draw! I am curious about Isparta. It sounds like it would either be a love or a hate for me. And there’s Profumi di Firenze’s Plenilunio. If this works on skin, it would be strawberry heaven.

    My choices would be:
    Bombay Bling
    Plenilunio
    Bois De Paradis

  • What a wonderful list of fragrances. My favorite fragrances are tom ford noir de noir and Olympic Orchids Seattle Chocolate a wonderful gourmand. the fragrances that I would like to win are.
    Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114
    Daniel Josier Josune
    Olympic Orchids Seattle Chocolate
    Neela Vermeire bombay bling
    Bond No.9’s New York Patchouli
    Annick Goutal Rose Absolue
    N’Aimez Que Moi extrait
    Bois De Paradis
    Plenilunio
    I am from America

  • Bombay Bling makes me smile, though it is more fun and light-hearted than romantic to me! When I am looking for a romantic scent I reach either for a creamy-powdery confection of a scent, or a dark rose-oriental. What an amazing draw, there is so much on the list that I want. I’m in the USA. My top choices, in order, would be Neela Vermeire Bombay Bling, Parfums DelRae Bois de Paradis, Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114, Daniel Josier Josune, I Profumi di Firenze Plenilunio, and Olympic Orchids Seattle Chocolate. Thank you!

  • A true beauty is Noir de Noir. The rose is stunning. Every time I catch a whiff it just takes me to a wonderful place. Love it. Ambre 114 is another great one to snuggle up too.
    Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114
    Daniel Josier Josune
    Olympic Orchids Seattle Chocolate
    Neela Vermeire Bombay Bling
    Bois De Paradis
    Plenilunio
I would be honored with any of these fine choices. In the USA.

  • Tom Ford Noir de Noir is so sexy and gorgeous, and I am a fan of both Lyric Man and Lyric Woman. Roses are beautiful and seductive. From the mouth watering choices, I would most like to win Olympic Orchids Seattle Chocolate, Bond 9 New York Patchouli, Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114 or the fabulous Bombay Bling. Thanks to everyone for the interesting lists and the fabulous draw! I’m in the US.

  • Not being a rose note fan per se, I will tell you I really do like Lyric Man from the list. Enter me to win: Plenilunio. Thank you. US

  • Great choices Cafleurbon. My mom used to wear 1000 Patou on special nights so I think Aaron’s pick really got to me. I have heard such great things about Bollywood Bling and I think sexy perfume can be fun too. It’s really romantic that Daniel Josier made a perfume for his wife. I bought Ispartta and I wear it a lot so maybe that will be my Valentine’s Day scent
    Amber 114
Bond no 9 New York Patchouli
    Bollywood Bling
    Bois de Paradis
    These really sound exciting !
Thank you what a great post and love the images too

  • Cupid’s arrow is scented with Noir de Noir. That is my fav from all the fragrances mentioned, Ambre 114 comes close.

For the draw I would love N’aimez que moi or Bombay bling. N’aimez is not easy approachable or wearable but I find it a treat for solitary moments.

    Great draw. Great choices.

  • So many perfumes mentioned in this list that I have tried and have been impressed with. First of Bois de Paradis of which I own 2 bottles and which inspired me to explore the rest of the line and I found one with the most realistic melon note. I am also impressed with Ambre from Histoires de Parfums which is a quality creation like many others in the line. Noir de Noir, Lyric Man, and Jean Patou 1000 are also the ones I own. the two fragrances mentioned which I don’t own but want to try are Onda and Isparta. For love, I would like to mention Ungaro original Diva and Une Rose de Kandahar as ones everyone should try. thanks a lot for the draw.

    My choices will be

    Neela Vermiere Bombay Bling
    Bond No.9 New York Patchouli
    Josune
    Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114.

Thanks a lot for the wonderful draw. I am in the US.

  • Diana Devlin says:

I’d be happy to win any one of these beautiful scents! But Annick Goutal’s Rose Absolu or Bond No. 9 Patchouli would be my choices.

The fragrance that sends an arrow through my heart is Dior’s Hypnotic Poison eau de parfum (the recent limited edition). I get so many compliments from strangers every time I wear it. It makes my knees buckle every time I wear it.

    I live in the U.S.

  • Thanks for the amazing draw! I adore Onda Extrait by Vero Profumo, it’s beautiful.

I live in the U.S. and would love to try:

    Bombay Bling
    Ambre 114
    Olympic Orchids Seattle Chocolate
    Josune
    Bond No.9 New York Patchouli
    Bois De Paradis
    12ml Plenilunio

    Happy Valentine’s Day!

  • Like Tammy, I am also always disappointed that most red roses you see at the florist’s do not smell of anything. I have smelled roses which do not look as good as those red ones in store but smell like a perfume in themselves. How I wish someone could find a way to create a rose hybrid that smells as good as it looks. I always associate Valentine’s Day with roses – so the Goutal Rose Absolue is the one that took my fancy out of the many excellent choices in the list.

Thanks for the draw. I live in Canada. If I win, I’d choose:
    – Bombay Bling
    – Ambre 114
    – Josune

  • I love Seattle Chocolate, and I would LOVE to smell Onda. I would love to win Josune, Ambre 114, or Bois de Paradis. I am in the US, thakn you!

  • It’s so nice to see such a wide variety of opinions on what is a sexy Valentine’s Day scent. I usually wear Thierry Mugler Angel because it smells so yummy. I have a tough time with rose perfumes but would like to find one that I like.
    My choices are Josune
    Bois De Paradis
    Ambre114
    Bombay Bling
    Naimez que moi
It seems Tom Ford noir de noir is a favorite with many of the commenters so that is the one I hope to try soon
    I live in the USA

  • Iuno Feronia says:

I love all the reviews but if I should schloss I would be seither bathed in Bombay Bling or in Plenilunio. On Valentine’s day I will wear a pure Rose oil or Casamoratti Lira. Thanks for the generous draw! I live in the EU and me wishlist would be:
    Bombay Bling
    Seattle Chocolate
    Josune
    Ambre 111

    Bois de Paradis
    Bombay Bling

    New York Patchouli
    Olympic Orchids Seattle Chocolate
    Bois De Paradis
    Bombay Bling

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I haven’t tried many of the mentioned scents, but I do love the idea of shared scents for Valentine’s, esp ambers. Ambre Sultan is my favorite, with its savory herb notes, though I haven’t tried the Parfums d’Histoires. Onda is a huge love for me…I’ll admit I never thought of it as Valentine’s Day…maybe a really carnal roll in the vetiver, so to speak! So perhaps for AFTER the nice dinner out. Another favorite sexy/romantic scent is a bit cliched, but Musc Ravageur and all of the slight “Roucel” variations of the citrus/vanilla/spice combo (L de Lolita, Labdanum for Le Labo, Helmut Lang scents) that smell kind of like MR reorganized around different notes.

I would love to be entered into the draw for: New York Patchouli, Bombay Bling, Ambre 114, Josune, Seattle Chocolate, and the Caron

    I’m in the US

  • Nice review! Bombay Bling was love at first sniff for me. Really amazing perfume.

  • This Valentine’s Day also marks the 5 year anniversary of my relationship with my significant other, so it’s extra special. I love this list!

I love this line from this review: “Love is sharing… To share your life, to share your possessions and even your perfume.” It’s very true! We are still looking for a perfume that we both can share. Perhaps we will give Bond No. 9’s New York Patchouli a try! It’s also fascinating to learn that amber is the most shared note. I love the deep smell of amber and I agree it’s bewitching on both men and women.

My choices in order of preference are:

    1. Josune (This is a perfect romantic Valentine’s day scent – love the fresh bergamot and the sensual rose and jasmine bouquet!)

    2. Annick Goutal Rose Absolu – alas, one cannot go wrong with Annick Goutal’s Rose Absolu – the perfect rose scent!

    3. Boise de Paradis – love the mysterious and sensual notes in this fragrance. Definitely a Valentine’s Day-appropriate perfume!

    4. Bond No. 9 New York Patchouli – I love the idea of sharing perfumes. This would be a perfect one for BF and I to share!

    5. Bombay Bling – I love perfumes that take me on faraway exotic destinations. When I sit in the office needing an escape, I love to sniff my wrist and immediately get whisked away to a wonderful place!

    6. Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114 – love the bewitching heady notes in this fragrance.

    7. 12ml Plenilunio – what a romantic perfume – white musks and soft woods, evoking the mystery of the moon.

    8. Seattle Chocolate – what a clever name! Love Seattle and love Chocolate. Forget chocolate laden with calories for Valentine’s Day. Wear this instead!

    9. N’Aimez Que Moi – powder and roses. Beautiful and vintage!

I live in the USA. Thank you!

  • N’aimez que Moi melts my heart along with Dans tes Bras as two of the most romantic and beautiful names for fragrance. No. 26 Isparta also makes me swoon while thinking of the City of Roses in Turkey.

Thank you for these thoughts on sharing love and fragrance and for the draw. I would love to experience Rose Absolue or N’aimez Que Moi. I am in the US.

Aujourd’hui et tous les jours, mon espoir est l’amour pour tous.

  • Out of all the perfumes I own the one that sends an arrow straight through my heart is By Kilian Beyond Love because I wore it often when my fiance and I were first dating and he always said he loved smelling it on his shirt after our nights out. 😉

  • I love these posts that have a lot of mini reviews – you’ve certainly piqued my interest about a lot of these scents. The story associated with N’Aimez Que Moi is captivating and very romantic, but from the descriptions, I’d probably choose No. 26 Isparta to wear – it sounds incredible!

I’m in the US and would love to experience (in order of preference):
    Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114
    Parfums DelRae Bois de Paradis
    Annick Goutal Rose Absolu
    Caron N’Aimez Que Moi
    Neela Vermeire Bombay Bling
    Daniel Josier Josune
    Olympic Orchids Seattle Chocolate

Thank you for the draw and hope you all have a happy, fragrant Valentine’s Day!

  • Tom Ford Private Blend – Noir de Noir for it sounds and smells “sexy and dark with rose dominant but not in ones face something dark and mysterious yet earthy, but creamy/chocolatey” this is my top choice!
Olympic Orchids, Seattle Chocolate Maybe for it is “dark, rich chocolate trimmed in Balsam fir, tree sap and black Bourbon vanilla” sounds another amazing perfume!
Profumi di Firenze Plenilunio sounds lovely strawberry with mandarin oranges and light amber musk notes so hard to resist.
Neela Vermeire Bombay Bling for its drydown notes that make it really sexy!
In case I win I would love to experience the following:
    Olympic Orchids, Seattle Chocolate
    Bombay Bling, Neela Vermeire
    Josune, Daniel Josier
    Ambre 114, Histoires de Parfum
Thank you for this detailed review and so generous draw!
I am a registered reader living in EU, Greece.
    Annick Goutal Rose Absolue.

Insparta 26, for it is “deep sexy rose dusted with dusky patchouli and covered in purple jam. This vivid, deep rose is almost sticky, as though it has been caramelized, but not overtly sweet” this I have to experience!

  • Noir de Noir is the most romantic fragrance that I ever tried. Absolute love in a bottle.

    I would love to win:

    Neela Vermeire Bombay Bling
    Bond No.9 New York Patchouli
    Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114
    Daniel Josier Josune
    Olympic Orchids Seattle Chocolate
    Parfums DelRae Bois de Paradis
    Annick Goutal Rose Absolu

I am in the U.S. Thanks for the draw!

  • Ambre 114 makes my heart beat a little faster because I love benzoin and vanilla. I’m in the US, and I would love to win Ambre 114, Seattle Chocolate, Bombay Bling, Plenilunio, Bois de Paradis, N’Aimez Que Moi, or Rose Absolu. Thanks and happy Valentine’s Day!

  • My wife uses Isparta 26 Parfumerie Generale and she loves it and I also really like the smell of it. Great fragrance for women on Valentine’s Day. In this list I would choose New York Patchouli for use on Valentine’s Day. For myself I think that Ambre 114, Josune, and Bombay Bling should work nice too.
    I live in the U.S.
    Thanks

  • These all sound amazing! My favorite part: “Plenilunio could easily be layered with Seattle Chocolate and turn anyone who wears them together into a human Dark Chocolate-Dipped Strawberry, and if that doesn’t smell like romance, I don’t know what does.” Mmmmhmmm yes please!
I also agree with: “you can’t go wrong with anything from PG, especially Isparta” even though I’ve never smelled it, because PG is a line that tends to work amazingly well on me.
Though florals aren’t my comfort zone,I love the sensual rose facet of L’Artisan Safran Troublant, along with its edible creaminess. Isparta sounds like a deeper darker take on the theme.

Another category that I’d enjoy: naughty musks like Xerjoff Mamluk and MKK, powerful orientals like Teo Cabanel Barkhane.
    Thank you for the draw!
    USA
