ÇaFleureBon Valentine’s Day Scented Gift Guide 2016 + The Top Ten What to Give or Get Fragrance Draw

romantic fragrances for valentine's day cafleurebon

The last time I received a Valentine’s Day Card from a beau was in the 6th grade, so I have mixed feelings about February 14. Whether you’re single, married or otherwise engaged, there is something special about celebrating LOVE.   As with every major holiday, I don’t think it’s a great idea to give fragrance as a gift, (unless you know the flaçon of their desire) but a box of chocolates, a dozen roses or a bottle of champagne are clichés unless it’s Moet & Chandon Dom Perignon Charles & Diana 1961 (which at $4,309 you should sell immediately to buy perfume). Not everyone can afford the Moet, so if that’s not in the budget, give something scented… My top ten Valentine’s Day gifts to give or to get (most are under $100).

The Moon & the Stars Baroque Oval Scent Locket

If you’re broke…go baroque! Artisan natural perfumer Laurie Stern of Velvet and Sweet Pea Purrfumery has you covered.  You may not have the object of your affection’s heart but who cares when you can wear The Moon and Stars . Laurie’s antique finish locket opens to reveal a solid perfume that has me reeling; sensuous tuberose with a hint of smoke, spice, creamy sandalwood and cocoa.   $52.00

aftelier perfumes chef essence fresh ginger blood orange and pink pepper sprays

The extent of my cooking skills is popping a Lean Cuisine into the microwave. I need serious help. No fear, Mandy Aftel’s Aftelier Perfumes All Natural Chef Essence Sprays are here to add dash to any dish I manage to burn and Mandy thoughtfully includes recipes on her site.  My favorites are the Fresh Ginger, blood orange and pink pepper sprays.   They’re also delicious used in cocktails, particularly important if your guest really needs to be a little tipsy before eating your dismal attempt at a four course dinner. Whether you are a gourmet chef or culinary challenged  Aftelier Chef Essences are a great way to spice up your love life. Prices range from $16-$39/30 ml bottle

providence perfume co cocoa chai body lotion

I once received  Whitman’s chocolates in a heart shaped box and of course bit into the dreaded nougat filled bon-bon. I do love the scent of chocolate, especially on my skin. Chocolate is an aphrodisiac but scaly dryness is a turn off. Artisan perfumer Charna Ethier of Providence Perfume Co  Cocoa Chai Body Lotion is made using a 100% natural formula blended with organic olive, aloe, coconut and jojoba oil to hydrate, so you and that special someone will love the skin in you’re in. Scented with cocoa, vanilla, ginger and cardamom, wear with caution… someone might leave teeth marks on your arm. $36/9 oz

Fornasetti-Profumi---Incense-Box---Bacio-on-Black holiday gift guide

I am already a huge fan Fornasetti Profumo’s ceramic candles that feature the enigmatic visage of Lina Cavelieri, the House’s operatic muse. I am mesmerized by the indolent scent created by Master Perfumer Olivier Polge known as “Otto”, with notes of aromatic balsam, thyme, orris root and incense that evoke a dark lover’s caress. The Bacio Incense box with a ceramic lid on a rosewood base is haute not headshop and doubles as a keepsake box for love letters. If those red lips could speak, they would whisper “buy me”. A smokin’ gift that you don’t inhale. ($245/ceramic lid box with 80 incense sticks) available at Barney’s NY

wild rose lip balm phoenix botanicals Irina Adam

Speaking of lips, are yours smoochable? No one wants to kiss a chapped mouth and no matter what Katy Perry says cherry chapstick really doesn’t do the job.  Natural perfumer Irina Adam of Phoenix Botanicals Wild Rose Lip Balm, is gently scented with hand plucked wild rose petals, and uses organic shea butter so your pucker is silky smooth. Bonus…the tube is recycable so you can kiss all night and do good for the environment. $6.00/.21 oz

mayan tuberose beyonce

I have a theory that Belle Fleur Fine Fragrance Mayan Tuberose candle (composed by Jerome Epinette) a favorite of Beyonce’s, was burning when Jay Z and Bey conceived Blue Ivy. The scent wafts through the room, mysterious exotic white flowers, heady with gardenia, ylang ylang and of course tuberose. Tuberose was considered so seductive that in Medieval times, young women were not allowed to walk out at night through a garden while they were blooming  Cancel your plans for the weekend, you aren’t going anywhere.  $74.00/ 7.5 oz / 210 g. Burn time: 50-55 hrs;Made in the USA Matchbox included

RazorPlisson_w_ShavingCream loccitane

Guys, does your five o’clock shadow show, because if it does it’s scratching up our faces. L’Occitane Cade Plisson Razor  and Shaving Cream Duo  is a fabulous set that includes an ergonomic razor and rich aromatic cade scented shaving cream. Cade grows wild in the Provencale scrubland, smells a bit like juniper and has healing properties used by Mediterranean men for centuries. Manufactured in Provence, L’Occitane distills the cade oil from the wood. The whole story is tres francais which after all is the language of love.   Cade Plisson Razor and 7 oz of Cade Rich Shaving Cream/$84

Nanu Lei Bath - Fizzy Mineral Bath Powder persephenie

There’s taking a bath and sharing the tub… either way Perfumer Persephenie Lea Persephenie Nanu Lei Fizzy Bath Powder is scented with Nanu, aka Hawaiian gardenia which is known to induce euphoria.   The bath salt contains Certified Organic cocoa butter (a natural antioxidant that smooths and revitalizes the skin), mineral rich sea salts, (known to detoxify and replenish), and nourishing coconut oil, high in essential fatty acids that protect the skin from free radicals.  Let it pour, this is not the time to be stingy. And the fizz? Have two flutes of champagne on hand as you listen to Chet Baker’s My Funny Valentine. $46 /27.5 oz in black apothecary jar.

atelier cologne rose anonyme and vetiver fatal

Rules Rules Rules… no fragrance for Valentine’s Day?  Exceptions are made and this year my choice is Atelier Cologne  Rose Anonyme and Vetiver Fatal (Jerome Epinette) two scents that are actually a “couple”. The romance goes something like this:  Rose Anonyme  is a beautiful jewel thief “who left a single rose and the scent of her perfume in its place for him to find”. The” him” of course is our man Vetiver Fatal, “He took one of his passports, burned the file and began the pursuit. This time she wouldn’t get away…”  the rich red rose of Rose Anonyme borders on the Oriental with nuances of oud that adds a smoky effect which is dark dark and lush… a perfect counterpoint to the citrus laced grassiness of Vetiver Fatal, truer to cologne and offset by wood and a hint of a lighter oud.   Rose Anonyme and Vetiver Fatal are both 18% pure perfume and are available in 200 ml with travel spray / $225- $195, 100 ml $150-$130 and 30 ml travel spray $85- $80.available at Atelier Cologne Boutiques Worldwide and online

  • The top ten selections look great, I would like to win all items if I had to choose one it would be Belle Fleur Fine Fragrance Mayan Tuberose or Providence Perfume Co Cocoa Chai Body Lotion. How I plan to spend my valentine’s day is with my significant other on a date.
    I am from America

  • These all sound divine! I will spend Valentine’s Day with a group of friends.

I would choose The Moon and Stars locket or Chai Cocoa Body Lotion.

    I’m in the US.

    Thank you for the draw!

  • Love your blog! I read one years ago that was like this, and it sadly stopped, so finding this was great.

I once had an excellent champagne at my ancient Greek prof’s party, it was amazing. I still want to know what the brand was!

On the first one, I find I do not like tuberose. The second makes me think I’d like the Fresh Ginger spray [I love Jamacian mules!, and the pink pepper [I love The rouge by Bulgari]. The third: I can’t bear to have any scent that smells like real food. Except tea scents, haha!

The fourth makes me think I’d love because I LOVE balsam, I have tons of oils/sprays/solids/incense/potpourri of it. But I don’t like incense in perfumes, it makes me think of my church. The fifth makes me think I’d like it, but I usually can’t wear lip balm often, as it feels very ‘on’/aggravating to my skin for some reason. The sixth, I do not like gardenia or tuberose [the medieval factoid is hilarious to me! Love it. The seventh: I do like juniper, so this sounds nice. For the eighth, I only have a shower sadly. But love the champagne idea.

The ninth/tenth are interesting, but I worry that I would not like the oud with roses. I am sensitive to which rose scents I like, and really can’t take any oud/heavy stuff. I love woods scents [I once bought a huge box of ‘woods’ samples] but hope the oud is light.

If I won I think the Vetiver Fatal sounds nice.

For Valentine’s day, I go out with my family and Grama for a fancy dinner. We all hand out candy to people where we work/volunteer. I live in NY.

  • Love the suggestions, and some great new products to explore, thank you. Can I go against the trend and say I always love fragrant gifts, and if we’re making valentines rules I propose Wearing ONLY perfume for Valentine’s Day ;>.

Of these, I’m most drawn to the Persephenie Nanu Lei bath salts. I’m not sure I’ve ever smelled Hawaiian Gardenia, but bath euphoria? Count me in! I love coconut too, so this sounds heavenly 🙂

As a second choice, I’d have to lean towards the Atelier Cologne Vetiver Fatale. AC produce some lovely scents, and are good quality for the price. Vetiver fatale is a great mix of early and fresh, and I’d be happy to add some to my collection

The Chai Cocoa sounds delicious too, but cocoa can be tricky on me.

I’ll be spending Valentines with my honey, a good meal and a better martini ;). Either USA or Canada works for me.

  • This was an amazing list and I want it all..lol! I will spend the evening out with friends. I would love to win the Belle Fleur Fine Fragrance Mayan Tuberose or the 30 ml spray of Rose Anonyme. I live in the US and thanks for the draw! 🙂

  • I like your list, and am coveting The Moon and Stars Oval Scent Locket, the Cocoa Chai Body Lotion, the Wild Rose Lip Balm, and the Chef Essence Spray in Ginger, not to mention the Fornasetti incense box. I’m in the US, and having had a rather pitiful little romance end recently, my plans for Valentine’s Day involve eating my feelings and a little light weeping.

  • Love all the selections, and I like how it is mixed up between all different types of products. I would love to win the Mayan Tuberose candle the most, but I would love to win any of the prizes! I am in the US, and I have no plans yet for Valentine’s day.

  • Any one of this is fine with me! I’d rather receive something I’ll get a lot of use out of than anything. A pretty great list!

  • Iuno Feronia says:

Great choices. I hate kissing chopped lips so I have always some lip balm with me – Rosebud is my favourite.
I live in the EU, Austria and I World like to ein the lip balm of Irina Adam

  • fazalcheema says:

I am def. intrigued by Aftel essences. I read NYT article on Mandy yesterday and it was really a brilliant read. Hope to meet Mandy sometime in the future. I am also intrigued by Belle Fleur candle. Tuberose when done right is hard to resist as I have learned by acquiring Cerutti Femme perfume recently. Fornasetti ceramic candle also seems a good choice though the price is a bit prohibitive. I guess the ceramic is probably much better in person than in the picture.

My choices for this draw will be

    Atelier Rose Anonyme
The Moon and Stars Oval Scent Locket
Mandy Aftel Chef Essence Sprays in Ginger

I will spend Valentine Home at home probably 🙂 I am in the US

  • Michelyn, these choices all look wonderful! I’d love almost all of them if I had more time to cook or take baths. 🙂 I don’t think we’re doing anything special for Valentine’s Day this year, but I do sincerely hope that I’m not nearly as sick by then, so that I can actually enjoy the day!

    I’d absolutely love:
    Atelier Rose Anonyme
Belle Fleur Fine Fragrance Mayan Tuberose Candle
Phoenix Botanicals Wild Rose Lip Balm

Thanks so much for this generous draw! I’m in the US.

  • Loved this list as it had me smiling all the way through. One year my boyfriend bought me a perfume I hated so I agree that it’s tough but I should have left better hints. My cooking too is pretty hopeless but the aftlier chef essence sounds great as does the Mayan tuberose candle. I also would love rose anonyme for me
Thanks for a fun post and great suggestions

    I live in the US

  • No need to enter me Michelyn, but OMG, I’m in hysterics over here! A gift you don’t inhale, you kill me! I have burned many a Lean Cuisine myself, by the way….

  • bunchofpants says:

Great Top Ten list! I think chocolates and roses are almost cop-out gifts, but I’ve had beaus who barely acknowledged V Day (Or worse, one sent me a “humorous” e-card that wasn’t nearly as funny as he thought it was). So I am happy with the thought behind any Valentine’s gift! Mandy Aftel’s chef’s essence sprays are intriguing, but I think the gifts I covet most are Atelier Cologne’s Vetiver Fatal and Persephenie Lea Persephenie Nanu Lei Fizzy Bath Powder. My choices for the draw are:

    Atelier Cologne’s Vetiver Fatal
Persephenie Lea Persephenie Nanu Lei Fizzy Bath Powder
Aftelier Perfumes All Natural Chef Essence Sprays

    I’m in USA.

  • Very nice review. I have not tried any of the selection, but sounds very good. If I would as lucky to win, my choices are Aftelier Perfumes All Natural Chef Essence Sprays in ginger and Phoenix Botanicals Wild Rose Lip Balm. Thank for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • All sound awesome! I am going to cook my favorite chocolate berry cheesecake and skype with my parents.
I live in the U.S. and would love to try Vetiver Fatal and Cocoa Chai Body Lotion.
    Thank you!

  • I wasn’t familiar with the chocolate scented goodies, fun reading! I love the story of Rose Anonyme. I enjoyed a sample of it once, and now I appreciate it even more. Thanks for the draw (US).

  • I liked all the selections to one degree or another, but *coveting* – that’s easy – Fornasetti candle of Lina Cavelieri with a bee on her nose. 🙂 Valentine’s Day is not particularly special to me. It feels too contrived. I would be happy to win: Belle Fleur Fine Fragrance Mayan Tuberose or Persephenie Nanu Lei Fizzy Bath Powder. I love BWF and anything that reminds me of Hawaii! In the US.

  • Lovely choices for sure, and a very nice varitey. Certainly couldnt afford the Moet, but then again if I could I’m sure it would be consumed by me at least. Love the Bacio Incense box, just not so sure how this would fit into my valentines decor. The razor duo is also extremly nice and a great idea, but I do have this thing for a guy who’s 5:00 shadow is not immediately removed. Ok I loved the remark about cancelling your weekend plans due to the long burn time of the lovely Belle Fleur Mayan Tuberose candle 😉 In fact that sounds like a perfect Valentine Weekend to me.
Would love the Candle for sure, as well as Charna’s Cocoa Chai Body Lotion, I could have a lot of fun explaining bite marks… I am a registered US reader.

  • BTW, in anticipation of getting the Mayan Tuberose Candle, I’ve added much to my shopping list. I don’t want the experience of a bare pantry during the 50-55 hour burn time 😉 Food will be necessary.

  • Love the list! I can only imaging what that cocoa body lotion smells like! If I win, I would choose either the travel 30 ml spray of Rose Anonyme or the Cocoa Chai Body lotion.
    I live in the U.S.

  • I’m always drawn in by a good list, and this qualifies! XD I’ve never been big on Valentine’s Day… perhaps it’s just too soon after the Christmas extravaganza. I’d love to win Atelier Cologne Vetiver Fatal; I bet it would smell smashing on my fiance. But I’d also be thrilled with the Belle Fleur Fine Fragrance Mayan Tuberose candle, Providence Perfume Co Cocoa Chai Body Lotion, or Persephonie Nanu Lei Fizzy Bath Powder. I’m in the US, thanks for the draw!

  • No plans for Valentine’s Day yet but I love the list! I’d be happy to receive almost anything from it (maybe I should pass it along to my husband lol) but I definitely covet the Fornasetti candles and incense box! They are incredible! I also love Atelier’s Vetiver Fatal and would be thrilled to win a bottle! Thank you for the draw and Happy Valentine’s Day! I live in the US.

  • All of those picks are great! I love vintage lockets, and have really been getting into solid perfume lately. It’s so convenient to carry (without the risk of spilling in your bag) and there’s something so sensual about it! I also love anything with rose, so the lip balm and Atelier Cologne’s Rose Anonyme are winners for me. I would LOVE to get either of those! I’m not familiar with L’Occitane’s men’s line, but it seems worthy of looking into for a gift, that shaving set is super stylish! Afterlier’s Chef Essence sprays call to the foodie in me, they look like something I’d put to use a lot.

    My choices are:

Aftelier Perfumes All Natural Chef Essence Sprays in Ginger
Phoenix Botanicals Wild Rose Lip Balm
Atelier Cologne 30 ml engraved travel spray of Rose Anonyme
I live in Canada, thanks for the draw!

  • Wow, these are all great selections! I’m fond of Atelier Cologne personally, but I would love to try any of these:

Phoenix Botanicals Wild Rose Lip Balm
30 ml engraved travel spray of Rose Anonyme
Belle Fleur Fine Fragrance Mayan Tuberose
The Moon and Stars Oval Scent Locket
Persephenie Nanu Lei Fizzy Bath Powder
Providence Perfume Co Cocoa Chai Body Lotion

I’ll be spending my Valentine’s Day smelling lovely and watching the midseason premiere of the Walking Dead! 🙂 I live in the US.

  • All suggestions sound very interesting and for sure I would love to have the following:

The Moon and Stars Oval Scent Locket because I like all Medieval things, jewels especially.
The Persephenie Nanu Lei bath salts because I long for the feeling of bath euphoria!!
The Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme for I adore roses.
The Chai Cocoa sounds yummy and I declare that I am a chocaholic!!!
I don’t like kissing chopped lips so I always carry some lip balm with me so definitely lip balm is another choice.
I’ll be spending Valentines day with my dearest one having a romantic dinner and a night stroll downtown for a drink or two
I live in the EU, Greece and I would love to win the lip balm of Irina Adam.
Thank you for the lovely draw!!!

  • It’s great that you’ve included such a myriad of scented products, because it showcases some of the many ways fragrance can be used and enjoyed (not to mention your catering for different price points, which is always a bonus!).

I think they all sound lovely, but given my location (Australia), I’m coveting the mail-friendly
    – Phoenix Botanicals’ Wild Rose Lip Balm most of all; and
    – Aftelier Perfumes All Natural Chef Essence Sprays in ginger

Thanks so much for such a great draw!

  • Great list and I hope my DH is reading this because I really want the velvet and sweet pea locket, the Mayan tuberose candle and for him Vetiver Fatal.
This year we are going to town and having a nice dinner.
    I live in Ohio
    Thank you for the drawing

  • I loved your comment about selling the champagne for perfume money – a woman after my own heart! There isn’t a thing on your list I wouldn’t love to give or receive:

A bottle of Rose Anonyme is top of my list, but I also love Belle Fleur candles (I was burning Figure Noir last night and my room still smells divine!) and think the Providence Perfume Co Cocoa Chai Body Lotion sounds perfect for the drying weather this time of year. Your description of the scent of the Moon and Stars locket also has me intrigued; I’m sure my lips would love Phoenix Botanicals’ Wild Rose Lip Balm (I also love their product photos – such beautiful light!); and I never knew about the existence of Mandy Aftel’s Chef Essences – I do a lot of cooking so I will have to check these out!

We don’t have any specific plans for Valentine’s Day, but will instead be celebrating by attending a concert a few days later – two of my favorite musicians are in town! Thanks for the suggestions and the draw! I’m in the US.

  • Valentine Girl says:

This looks like an amazing selection of birthday gifts! Of course if the user name didn’t give it away, my birthday is Feb. 14th, so I don’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day. I am definitely coveting the the Bacio incense box. I don’t receive gifts from other people, so I always make sure to gift myself with something fragrant.

I would love to win either, the Moon & Stars scented locket, the ginger Chef Essence spray from Mandy Aftel, Atelier Cologne Vetiver Fatal, and since my lips are constantly chapped & my skin dry from Nov. – March, Phoenix Botanicals’ Wild Rose Lip Balm, or Providence Perfume Co Cocoa Chai Body Lotion. I usually work on Feb 14th, and this year is no different. So I am working on the actual day itself, but will celebrate my birthday a few days later with my best friend of 30+ years. USA resident.

  • What an AMAZING list! I need to get my boyfriend onto CaFlurebon to drop some major hints of what I want from this list. This also makes a wonderful birthday or Christmas gift!

Regarding the selections, anything by Mandy Aftel is lovely! The chef essences sound amazing!

I have ALWAYS wanted a scent locket! Both a gorgeous wearable gift that smells amazing!

I love home fragrances so candles and incense would definitely work for me! I’m already envisioning how amazing my house is going to smell with one of these gifts!

Lotions and any bath related products will always make me happy! I just moved into a house with a bath tub (yes I’ve been missing out on baths for the last few years!) and I would love to try the bath powder and then slather on the lotion afterwards!

I have a few samples of Atelier Cologne and I love how natural they smell! I AM coveting all their fragrances so badly!!!

And now I know what to get my boyfriend as a birthday gift. That set from L’occitane is right up his alley!

I live in the USA and my choices in order are:

    1. Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme (I’ve been COVETING this fragrance so bad and you would be making my Valentine’s Day if I win this!!!!!)

    2. The Moon and Stars Oval Scent Locket (So gorgeous! Just beautiful! Would make me a happy girl!)

    3. Belle Fleur Fine Fragrance Mayan Tuberose (I’m already envisioning how great my house will smell!)

    4. Persephenie Nanu Lei Fizzy Bath Powder (I finally moved into a house with a bath tub, and I would love to enjoy bath time with this gorgeous bath powder!)

    5. Cocoa Chai Body Lotion (This will likely be one of those lotions where I won’t stop sniffing myself)

Thank you for the wonderful draw!

  • Some great, out of the ordinary choices. Not the usual box of chocolates!

I covet the Moon and Stars scented locket most of all.
I would also love the Ginger Spray/Aftel
    Vetiver Fatale/Atelier
    Mayan Tuberose Candle/Belle Fleur
    or Persephanie Bath Powder.

Thanks for the ideas and the draw! USA

  • I enjoyed your top ten selections (and appreciate that most of them are under $100). Should I win, I would choose The Moon and Stars Oval Scent Locket, Perez Belle Fleur Fine Fragrance Mayan Tuberose, Phoenix Botanicals Wild Rose Lip Balm or Persephenie Nanu Lei Fizzy Bath Powder. I live in the US and I plan to spend Valentine’s Day with my hubby and a nice quiet dinner at our favorite restaurant.

  • OMG. Everything sounds so wonderful. What a wonderful giveaway. I wonder if I can hold my breath long enough for you to pick me. I hope so.

  • I enjoyed your picks! A ton of great things on it. I don’t plan on doing anything too special for valentine’s day, just buy something special for my parents. I would love to win Vetiver Fatal! I’m a Canadian reader and thanks for the draw!

  • Excellent choices for a variety of circumstances, I like that. I always thought Valentines Day was kind of depressing – all that pressure to be attached to someone! There are many kinds of love, and they can all be celebrated every day. But treats to covet? Now we’re talking. I would love to win Providence Perfumes Coco Chai Body Lotion, Atelier Rose Anonyme, the gorgeous perfume locket or Mandy Aftel’s Chef Essence spray. And I definitely covet the Fornasetti Incense box! Thanks to all for the fun draw, I’m in the US.

  • Great draw and I love the choices! I plan on enjoying family during the big day. I would really enjoy either of the Atelier scents! I’m in Canada
