Anna Zworykina has had a line of perfumes available at Anna Zworykina Perfumes for some time, comprised of collections of beautiful natural scents worth exploring.  Now Anna has partnered with textile artist Irina Batkova and photographer Evgeniya Chudakova to launch the brand Switch Perfumes & More. Switch’s concept is a response to the numbing of emotions and indifference that modern life seems to have created in the world.

Switch & More Perfumes and Accessories Collection

The line consists of 5 sets, each inspired by ornaments and their corresponding characters or artifacts of Slavic folklore.  Customers are invited to mix, match, and enjoy items from all the sets to create their own stories.  As such, there are no names for the sets to influence customers, only assigned numbers.

1 switch perfumes& more no 1

“№ 1” was developed around the ornament of mermaids and as an embodiment of outright seduction without tricks of coquetry.  It conjured to mind the lore of Irish selkies, German nixies, and Slavic mermaids; beauties so dark and yet enchanting that they are impossible to resist and entirely unforgettable. The scent opens with fresh green herbs that interweave to resemble a deep forest fougere.  Though a magical transformation, the smell of musk and skin emerges though no musky notes are listed for the perfume.  The musk is surrounded by floating spring florals to draw one into the spell.  Then the perfume switches once again, the next chapter filled with rich warm woods and balsamic tones, a comfort after having observed such a powerful charm. Notes: Elemi, mango leaf, hyssop, rosemary, mimosa, lavender seville, frankincense, linden blossom, tuberose, frangipani, ylang-ylang, rose de mai, osmanthus, clover sweet, Fiji sandalwood, beeswax. oakmoss, labdanum, Vanuatu sandalwood, maysoya.

2 switch perfumes &more no 2

№ 2” draws inspiration from Vasalisa, a heroine of Russian fairytales.  Vasalisa is a character of duality, both beautiful and wizened, a sorceress and a resourceful homemaker, a paradox for sure.  Anna also drew on the tales of an evil forest fairy Lesovichka from Slavic legend who entices children to follow him into the woods to the kingdom of Leshy, a forest ghost, where they are then transformed into forest ghosts themselves.  The perfume embodies the four seasons as four stages of unveiling in one fragrance.  The perfume opens with green leaves and moist dew created through violet leaves and petitgrain.  The floral heart combines the hints or neroli from the petitgrain with a classic, beguiling blend of rose and jasmine.  A touch of sour wafts in from black currant bud to offset the sweet flowers, keeping it intriguing and exciting, luring you farther into the woods.  The deep dry heartwood note become shadowy and a bit mournful as oakmoss and labdanum darken the base, adding a haunting quality. Notes: Azalea, blackcurrant buds, violet leaves, petitgrain, Jasmin Sambac, Damascus Rose, lavender, rosewood, oakmoss, labdanum.

3 switch perfumes & more 3

“№ 3” is something of a trickster, representing the hallucinogenic mushroom of lore Fly Agaric and the metamorphosis of the butterfly.  The key note in “№ 3” is Ledum, a devious flower said to have a narcotic scent that intoxicates animals and was used by witches for love spells and flying ointments.  “№ 3” begins as a smoky, mossy citrus.  It is pleasant and safe at first sniff.  As you begin to grow comforted in this skin, even a little bit dreamy, the layers underneath reveal themselves and shifting your being.  Transformation begins.  A musky smell comes forth, damp and dark, mixing with scents of the forest floor.  Watery florals sweeten the air, creating a dizzying contrast of scents, decomposition and life.  It is positively heady.  It finally settles you down in the heart of a dark forest, trees towering above filtering out all light, the perfect place to emerge from your chrysalis and spread your new wings.  Notes: Ledum, petitgrain, azalea, lapsang souchong, juniper berry, turkish rose otto, jasmine sambac, styrax, Himalayan cedarwood, vetiver, oakmoss, saffron.

4 switch perfumes & more

“№ 4” embraces the archetype of Baba Yaga, one of the most intricate heroines of Russian fairy tales. “She is the guard between the world of the living and the dead. She is the keeper of old knowledge able to predict the future.  She is a ruthless warrior and a wise patroness. She can be both dangerous and cruel, but she can show mercy to a worthy person.”  The intent of № 4 is to teach you to embrace your darkness as part of you and to love it. As a perfume, “№ 4” opens with a tangled thicket of herbs and thorns.  Growing from the harshest conditions, the herbs are strong with their scent but run on the side of bitter and musky due to angelica root paired with resins.  The dank smell of earth and dry trees long dead invite you to look far into the recesses of yourself and not turn away at what you see.  Smoke from an otherworldly incense is carried to you on the breeze.  This scent will guide you to the home of Lesovichkas and Leshy and welcome you as one of their kind.  Notes: Frankincense, choya ral, black tea, guaiacwood, patchouli, labdanum, angelica root, vetiver, opoponax.

0 switch perfumes & more no 0

“№ 0” is the perfume at the center of the collection, an embodiment of harmony.  It is represented by the ornament for the Water of Life.  While common to many cultures, in Russian fairy tales the water of life is usually sought by the hero and the heroine helps him find it.  Anna turned to legendary women Eve and Aphrodite when formulating this feminine composition of balance. “№ 0” is beguiling and seductive.  Imagine Aphrodite rising from a sea of flowers, petals clinging to her skin and protecting her chasteness.  Beauty and virtue married in floral ecstasy. Fresh roses and jasmine wind across clean powdery skin, delicate in touch as they offer their strength to the wearer.  This scent brings us out of the forest and into the garden of eden.  Supporting the flowers is an intricate base of musky amber and iris. Notes: Yuzu, elemi, mimosa, galbanum, white cognac, rose de mai, osmanthus, neroli, turkish rose otto, rose gallica otto, jasmine grandiflorum, jasmine sambac, benzoin, tonka bean, siam wood, orris root, ambrette seed, vanilla.

So flip that switch.  Seek out your story through these natural artisan perfumes and  luxe accessories made possible by these artists’ collaboration.

Wow these all sound gorgeous! Love the connection of patterns, images, and colors to scent vs. a name. The one inspired by Baba Yaga definitely sounds up my alley–earthy, woody, spicy, and maybe with a touch of sweetness to cut the smoke with the opoponax? That said all of them look amazing. If the linden and beeswax in no 1 is prominent, I feel those two notes go together so well! I live in the US and I haven’t heard of Anna Zwoykina before.

  • No 4 – Baba Yaga pulls me in – makes me think of Anubis, “he who guards the portal”. How would this smell? No 0 also – floral, harmony, and balance. I should add that they all make me very curious to see if and how the fragrances correspond to their respective fairy tales. It’s fairly rare for me not to have heard of a perfumer but Anna Zwoykina is one. This adds to my curiosity. USA

  • I would most like to try #4 Baba Yaga, in the spirit of Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Pictures At An Exhibition.” I live in the US, and have not heard of Anna Zwoykina before now; thank you for this most informative post!

  • All of these scents are pretty interesting, but I’m really intrigued with the “№ 2 Vasalisa”. A violet and black currant combination definitely sounds nice! I haven’t heard of Anna Zworykina before.
I live in Europe. Thank you!

  • I’d like to try No.0 the most because there’s yuzu in it! I live in Canada and this is indeed my first time learning of Anna. Thanks for introducing 🙂

  • I would love to try them all especially No. 4 and 0. The compositions of these sound very intriguing. I love how the scents are linked to mythological deities. They sound very similar to Roman and Greek Mythological Deities and Gods. It’s funny how different cultures, with probably little contact with each other, heve similar beliefs. I’m in the US. Thanks so much for this amazing, generous draw.

  • Of the set the most interesting to me is No. 4 because of the smoky, resinous notes and also because I’ve always loved the Baba Yaga story. This article was my introduction to Anna Zwoykina.
    u.s.

  • I am most intrigued by No0 because it focuses on water of life and unlike most literature in the world, the heroine and not the hero is the actual star of the folk tale..I had never heard of Anna Zworykina before but it seems she can do in Russia what Mandy Aftel did in the US. thanks a lot for the draw. I am in the US

  • These scents seems to be very interesting, but think № 4” could be what I’m looking for. I love all the listed notes in the composition mainly because it seems to be very smokey and resinous, so this combination definitely sounds nice!
    I live in the US.
    Thank you!

  • Both No. 3 and No. 4 sound really interesting, but I think a perfume inspired by Baba Yaga would suit me best. I hadn’t heard of Anna and am thrilled to know of her. I’m in the US. Thank you for the opportunity.

  • I’d never heard of Anna Zwoykina before, but I’m so glad I know about her now! I’m always happy to find new natural perfumers. I’m most curious about No. 1, because of the beeswax note. No. 3 also sounds intriguing, though! I live in Canada.

  • Jennifer Rhind says:

Until now, I had not heard of Anna Zwoykina. This sounds wonderful – I love the multisensorial aspects of fragrance – and these scents are absolutely imaginative and inspired. I am drawn to No.2 (I adore blackcurrant bud) and No 3 (I am at home in a forest environment). I live in Scotland.

  • This is the first time I heard of Anna Zwoykina, I think she is a very talented perfumer.
I’d like to try № 1 as I like florals scent.
I live in Malaysia. Thank you for the draw.

  • I have never heard of Switch Perfumes before, thanks for the review. I like natural perfumes and the fairy tale inspiration is great! So I would like to try all of them but No0 sounds most interesting for me.
    I live in Germany.

  • Very beautiful review. I suppose that these perfumes are all fabulous. I think I would like to try “№ 0” the most, because the notes sounds incredibly wonderful. This is my first time learning of Anna Zworykina, I think she is a very nice person. Thanks for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • I’m so happy you’re featuring Switch! I have heard of the company and of Anna Zwoykina, but most of it was in Russian, and I didn’t understand even though I can read Cyrillic. I want to try № 4” the most, and adore the description from the website: “. ..is like armour of nettle weaved by a patient witch. . . “Do not follow me. I want to stay alone”.” What dark olfactory magic! In the US.

  • I have yet to try Switch but my did I love reading the reviews! Anna has such an fantastic artistic sense, and I find this extremely important in a perfumer.

I have also never tried a fragrance line with a Russian aesthetic. I’ve always been fascinated by Russian culture and lore.

I would have to pick No. 1 as the fragrance I would love to try. I’ve always had a fascination with mermaids and other beautiful mythical creatures of the sea. I love the scent of musk with florals. I see that one of the notes is Fiji Sandalwood. This fragrance sounds beautiful!

I live in the USA. Thank you!

  • I had not heard of Switch before, but I love the idea of perfumes inspired by Russian folklore! I am also not that familiar with Russian perfumers in general, so this is fun to read about 🙂 I would choose No. 4 because I think Baba Yaga is fascinating, and the perfume sounds wonderfully ugly-beautiful and earthy. I am in the US, and I am registered. Thank you!

  • This is the first team I heard about Anna but this Zworykin fragrances seem to be good. The fragrance that most caught my attention was No. 4. I’m a Frankincense lover, I can’t resist so the combination of the notes with and the description given is amazing.
    I live in the US.
    Thank you!

  • I think is a very rich idea to inspire your smells in Russian folklore tradition.

I would like to try No. 4 because fo its earthy and dark side

I live in EU. Thanks for the draw

  • These all sound amazing but the “floral ecstasy” of No. 0 seems like something I would enjoy. I have never heard of Switch Perfumes, but I think the tie in with Russian Folklore is very interesting. I live in the USA. Thank you for the draw.

  • The descriptions are pretty! No.4 Baba Yaga sounds wonderful and just in time for winter. I had never heard of Anna Zworykina before.
I live in the USA. Thanks so much!

  • That is an awesome draw – thanks for the chance! I follow Anna on Facebook, and I know about her natural perfumes.
I would like to try No 4 the most, because of the appeal to embrace the darkness as part of me and love it! Moreover, I have never smelled choya ral, and I would very much like to!
I am a registered reader in Bulgaria (EU).

  • This is my first time learning about Anna Zworykina–and I’m very glad to do so!
I love fairytales, and mermaids and selkies and all aquatic ladies are my absolute favorite kind of mythical creature, so No 1 calls to me like a siren! Many of the notes are things I know I like, like beeswax and linden, but it’s really the whole ‘vibe’ that appeals to me most.

Baba Yaga and older single witches are my second favorite characters, and I love smoky, herbal, forest-y scents, so No 4 also entrances me….
They all sound amazing and I’d love to try them. Thanks for the draw
    USA

  • This is my first time learning about Anna. But she sounds extremely talented. I think No. 4 interests me the most. It sounds great! Thank you for the draw and I’m in Canada!

  • I love the story of No. 2. I think that would be a fragrance that I would really enjoy. As others have said, this is my first times learning about Anna Zworykina. She definitely knows what she’s doing when it comes to perfumery.

    Canada

  • Anna sounds like such an amazing human! I respect her journey into perfumery and her creations. No. 0 is definitely my favorite. I enjoy the use of florals in it.

    I’m international (Toronto).
