Mary Ellen Lapansky and Lyn Leigh of the Perfumed Plume Awards, Sarah Horowitz Thran and Scents of Self, Carlos Powell of Brooklyn Fragrance Lover and Christophe Laudamiel

Beauty Habit's Paula Vasquez & Teresa Mitchell gave us a glimpse into their business model and the scent lines we would be seeing later at the Back Label Wines cocktail party. The Perfumed Plume's Mary Ellen Lapsansky & Lyn Leigh spoke of their nascent venture's Fragrance Awards  whose mission is to recognize editorial excellence in a wider variety of categories awarding the best in creative storytelling and visuals that capture the heart of fragrance as an art form. The awards will be modeled after the prestigious Prix Jasmine Awards (originally in France, now defunct) and the Jasmine Awards in the UK. One of the highlights was Sarah Horowitz-Thran’s emotional presentation of the QVC exclusive Biography Scents of Self. an artisan and bespoke perfumer for 20 years she recounted her deeply personal journey that touched us all. Congrats Sarah. Pauline Rochas and Carole Beaupre of Coolife spoke of origins of the brand and their latest scent, Troisieme (Patricia Choux). Chandler Burr talked about perfume as art, and our reliance on reading a list of ingredients, “We don't wear "notes." We don't look at red and yellow and grey and orange. We look at a painting and we wear a perfume.” He teased us with a new project that he is working on which will be launched in February 2016.

Of course there was a giveaway; her semi bespoke perfume created by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, Reveries de Paris was won by David Ecker and Mary Beth Devine. Francois Damide announced his latest venture with Karen Dubin, Parfumerie de France, a curated selection French luxury perfumes for women and men as well as a line of home fragrances. Carlos Powell spoke about being an “average guy who had a passion for perfume” and introduced us to Brooklyn Fragrance Lover.  Each year, Sniffapalooza features a charity and for this Fall Ball 2015 it was Christophe Laudamiel's The Academy of Perfumery and Aromatics Sense of Scents Edu-kit. Le Labo New York City SoHo

Day 2: October 25, 2015

A light rain greeted us on the way to Birchbox Soho. Karen Dubin announced, "it never rains on Sniffapalooza" and true to her word, the sun broke through as we departed. At Birchbox Soho, we enjoyed a mini Master Class with Harvey Prince Fragrances  presented by Karthik Aggarwal. After, everyone had a chance to enjoy browsing the stores two levels of beauty and fragrances. Le Labo is always a favorite stop. Boutique manager, Erika gave us a sneak sniff of Thé Noir 29 (Frank Voelkl); which we reviewed last week. It's been two years since their last release so interest was high.  Up the street at Atelier Cologne, Ross Barry had prepared mimosas for us to enjoy their latest releases, Jasmin Angélique and Musc Impériale.

redflower diffusers

RedFlower Boutique 13 Prince Street

The last two stops prior to lunch, Red Flower and Rituals were less familiar to the group. Red Flower is botanically based and 100% vegetarian and paraben-free. While candles are the best known  from  the company, there is much to explore in the product range of face, body, hair and scents. Guaiac by Red Flower received four stars from Chandler Burr and owner Yael Alkalay was written up on our pages in 2010.

Rituals NYC

Rituals, a Dutch based international company with over 350 stores in Europe launched in North America two years ago with three doors, two in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn. The brand is no animal testing and paraben-free. Store manager, Rafaella Alberts guided me through the collections of Eastern based traditions.

Mark Behnke and Katy Knuth with Beckie Sheloskie of Rebel Intuitive

Lunch at La Mela is a five course affair. Everyone gets to rest their feet and enjoy a glass of wine with the feast. The lunch presentations are always a blast with emcee Mark Behnke of ColognoisseurFirst presenter was Los Angeles based Jennifer McKay Newton of DefineMe Fragrances. From Interior Designer to perfumer by way of candles, DefineMe launched earlier this year with collection of fragrances packaged as empowered women. The name and signature for each fragrance represents both the scent and the personality behind it. She shared that it was during her tween years that YSL Paris sent her down the rabbit hole and she never looked back. A percentage of her sales goes toward Girls, Inc. Beckie Sheloske & Katy Knuth oRebel Intuitive Perfumes, (discovered by CaFleureBon, it is true!!!) presented their natural fragrance line which are pure, unadulterated and untouched by technology. They marry old world techniques and traditional raw materials such as flowers, plants, seeds, woods, fruits, resins and animals with a rock and roll sensibility. They talked about “Rebel Smells”  blind  testing with a group of friends, without prior information on the inspiration or notes, and ask who record their first impressions of the perfume through color, shape, texture, image or  memory.

Sue Phillips of Scenterprises updated us on recent developments with regard to bespoke fragrances. After lunch, Sue hosted a Custom Fragrance Creation Session at The Scentarium where she takes clients on a journey through her personal world of custom fragrance creation. A Scent Personality Quiz and evaluation determines which blends work best to design one's own signature scent. To close Sunday’s lunch, we met  Will Yin of Scent Truck, who developed a subscription service where he curates every box with three scents every month, predicated on one's profile.

Byredo Perfumes

Stockholm's niche perfumerie Byredo was our last stop. The airy minimalist store is the brand's second location. Store manager, Alix Han Jiang greeted us with flutes of champagne as we all tested the new release Rose of No Man’s Land.

  • I live vicariously through these reports. I like to read who was there and what’s new. Never attended an event anything like this. I’m excited to see in included in the bag Tiziana Terenzi. 🙂 US

  • This looks like it was a lot of fun – a lot of stuff was packed in! I like the idea of the Friday evening Event. I went to the Fall Ball a few years ago and had a great time! I adore Paula Vazquez (and Teresa M as well) – they are amazing women!!! There are a lot of delights in that bag but I swooned at the Amouage Gold Body Lotion – I love that stuff like nobody’s business!!

  • Wow, wow, and wow – for Sniffapalooza and the swag bag. I enjoyed Hernando’s entire Sniffapalooza Fall Ball report. I could imagine being there. It sounds like it was wonderful. I have never been to a Sniffa. The swag bag is incredible and everything sounds great. I would be most excited to try goodies from Shalini, Parfums de Marly, and Nuxe. USA

  • This sounds like it was such a super fun event. Definitely something to add to my list of things I must do! Sadly I’ve never been to a Sniffa, but oh wow winning that swag bag would be amazing! I’d be most excited for Nuxe and Fleur 09, but it all looks great!

  • What a fun event!!!! Good food and good fragrance. Doesn’t sound like work, sounds like a vacation!! I didn’t k now Penhaligon’s had come across the pond or that they had new fragrances. I always learn so much on your site. I’d love to try anything, I have a ‘perfum buddy’ who I pass of my samples to that I don’t care for so nothing goes to waste. I would love to try Robert Piguet’s samples. Thanks.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Looks like an amazing event. I enjoy reading these write-ups for all these kinds of get togethers to vicariously live through them! I have never made it to one. Breakfast at Bergdorf sounds great. I love the variety of locations and houses represented in this event. I’d be absolutely thrilled to try any samples, particularly from less familiar houses like Tiziana Terenzi and Nuxe! I’m in the US.

  • I have been to Sniffapalooza once, and this detailed report helped me relive every minute! I would have loved to visit Beautyhabit, who made a special trip to the event. They are one of my favorite online stores! Rituals is another new discovery this year … quality product at reasonable price point. I would love to try Rebel Intuitve’s work. I look forward to attending again in the next couple of years, but until then I would love to win this bag! I’m in the USA.

  • Great write up, I feel like I was there minus the sore feet! I’ve never been to Sniffapalooza, it looks like so much fun plus a great opportunity to learn more about perfumers and their process. I’m especially interested in sampling RedFlower, Coolife and Elisire but everything looks wonderful. Thanks! I’m in the US.

  • I have been on the fence about attending Sniffa (living across the country it’s a long way to travel) but Hernando’s description of each destination and presenter makes the experience very alluring. I would love to smell Shalini, rich florals are a favorite of mine. I’m in the CONUS, thanks so much for the draw!

  • bunchofpants says:

Wow, my mind is reeling just reading about Sniffapalooza, I can only imagine how intoxicating it must have been to be there. Wonderful fragrances, good food, good wine …sounds like a dream weekend! As far as which brand I’d be most excited to win … that’s a tough one but I will say Coolife. I’m in Con US.

  • I have not yet attended such an event, but I hope to in the not-too-distant future. The article really gave me a sense of the full scope of the weekend. (I had not realized there was a charitable component–how great is that?) As for brand I’m most excited about–Shalini! I’m in the US.

  • Swag bag prizes is a favorite draw of mine. I never been to a sniffing extravaganza. I don’t think I live any where near one. I enjoyed the pictures included to see what people look like I only read about. If I win this I think I’ll dump it on the floor and go for the Molton Brown first. u.s.a.

  • I’ve never heard of a Sniffapalooza before, but after reading this report, I sure hope it happens elsewhere as well and not just in New York (so more people can attend)! Seems like it would make for a fantastic educational experience as well for people who are not acquainted with scent. I’m not in the continental US but if I win, I’ll be gifting it as a birthday present to my sister who lives in Seattle.

  • fazalcheema says:

It seems every year Sniffapalooza event tops the previous year event. I def. see myself attending one of these events in the future…so many presentations and from different types of industry insiders including perfumers, reviewers, bloggers, and even a normal perfume fan. I wonder how close is the relaunched Amber Absolute to the original release. The one I am most excited about in the draw is Shalini. thanks a lot for the wonderful draw. I am in the US

  • It’s as if I was there. It was a very detailed report, which I appreciate. I am excited about winning Robert piguet and parfums de marly… Honestly, the entire bag sounds grand. I live in TX. Thanks for the drawing

  • Reading this thorough report of the multi-day event makes me so sad that I don’t live in NYC. I’m only 2 hours away, but I might as well be on Mars. I’m familiar with a few of the brands mentioned in the bag like Marly, Mugler and Piguet, but I’d love to try the other brands in the bag. Thanks for the draw!

  • Wowsa – I have never attended any event like this before. Apart from all the wonderful goodies described, I think my favorite part of the report is discovering some lovely new spots right here in my city, as well as the Brooklyn Fragrance Lover blog, which I’d never heard of. That swag bag of goodies has me salivating…if I had to pick a few that excite me mot, I would name Molton Brown, Mugler, By Kilian, and Piguet.

  • Ah, cruel fate! I am lying here in bed, laid out by the first head cold of the season. unable to smell a thing. In that mother of all swag bags, I’m intrigued by the RedFlower sample — Guaiac, perhaps? That’s the scent of theirs I’d most like to try. I’ll be in NYC in February, and I am determined to get to some of these wonderful destinations this time! I live in the continental U.S.. and I’ve never been lucky enough to attend a sniffa event. This wonderful, comprehensive writeup only fuels my desire to go!

  • I luckily caught a whiff of the coming of sniffapalooza as it some how popped up on my feed. I don’t events in general but this was just my thing! Unfortunately I didn’t get to go and forgot about it until now! Wow – some people love the play by play of sports, the Kardashians…but this is awesome. I love the walk through of what life in this realm is like, even the breakfast notes were a lovely addition.

I live here and never new that Red Flower had a store or that Rituals was Brooklyn based. Thank you for opening up my world that doesn’t have access to something I’m interested in. Makes me rethink my career!

  • A great report and an inspired piece of writing by the wonderful Hernando! I must say he captured the energy and enthusiasm of our 3-day weekend! It’s always a blast, and I love how folks travel from all over the globe to be with kindred spirits who share our passion for scent. This time we had attendees from Italy, Germany, France, Bermuda, Russia,UK, South Africa, Canada and all across the U.S. Wow, that’s a lot of LOVE!

Hope to see you at Sniffapalooza Spring Fling, Sat April 30 – Sun May 1. Cafleurebon ROCKS!

    XOXO
Karen (The shorter half of Team Karen!)

  • I loved hearing about all the events and special speakers as I recognize so many of the names from the perfume blogs that I follow. I hope to someday attend this event! I am most excited to try the new Piguet Visa Intense as I am a huge fan of the original. I’m in the U.S.

  • Love the article Hernando, great job in describing Sniffapalooza’s non-stop fragrance extravaganza! I was happy to participate and it was great to meet so many fragrance fans and aficionados! Thank you Ca Fleur Bon for being so supportive and accepting of new, indie perfumers!

  • What a wonderful series of events! I was interested in attending before, but this detailed report shows that Sniffapalooza is not to be missed! I would love to try Shalini. In the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • The Sniffapalooza Fall Ball must have been fabulous! Hernando’s report captured the fun and festivities and I enjoyed reading it. I’ve never attended a Sniffa event before but would love to. I would be really excited to win By Kilian and Molton Brown fragrance samples.

  • merrysovery says:

I love reading these reports and living vicariously! It sounds like everyone had an action-packed fragrant weekend. I think I’m most excited about trying Shalini!

  • I enjoyed reading this because it was almost like being there! Though I’m sure that would be even more exciting. I have not attended a Sniffa but hope to one day. I’m looking forward to trying the Parfums de Marly. Thanks, I’m in the US.

  • Loved the play by play action in Hernando’s Fall Ball report. So exciting. I wish I could have been there for breakfast at Bergdorf’s. I’m no longer within commuting distance of NYC, so reports like this are fun. I’ve never been to a Sniffa event but would have loved to be there and to win something from Parfums de Marly. Yum. I’m in the US. Thank you for the scented fun and for the extravagant swag bag draw.

  • Excited about Shalini now available here. I’ve had samples of this beauty – lovely! Chandler Burr excites me as well, I’m totally intrigued by what he has planned next….always love doing the Chandler Burr series fragrances that are not named. It is true, so often we go to find out about perfumes (notes, etc.,) and may make up our mind long before ever actually wearing one.
I have never been to a Sniffapalooza and it just sounds like a great time. Killian’s new fragrance sounds like it might be something I want to try. Anything with sex appeal! Custom Fragrance Creation is also interesting to me – so hearing what Sue Phillips had to share must have been cool. What fun it must be to attend this!
    I’m in US and registered.

  • This sounds like the best weekend ever! It must have been so fun to be surrounded by fellow scent lovers, listening to people talk about the industry. I’ve never gone to a Sniffa before but it’s on my list of things to do. I’m in the US and I don’t a particular brand I’d be excited to win, because it would all be new and exciting to me. Thanks!

  • The report made me feel as close as one can be to being there without actually smelling anything… 🙁

I have never been to a Sniffapalooza event, but I will try to be in the area for the next time.

I’d be most excited about winning the Robert Piguet samples.

I am in the US. Thanks for the draw.

  • girasole638 says:

I love that Hernando spared no detail – it really felt like being there (sadly, I’ve never been able to attend). The pictures are great, too – so many beautiful bottles! I’m most excited about the RedFlower and Sarah Horowitz Thran samples, and I’m in the US.
