Au Pays de La Fleurs D'Oranger Event…Stop and smell the Rose Centifolia (Rose de Mai) May 28, 2015 (photos by Megan)

I spent a beautiful day last week at Domaine d’Olivine in Peymeinade near Grasse to meet Au Pays de la Fleurs d’Oranger and explore their range of perfumes. The outdoors setting amongst the flowers, grass and trees was simply divine. The day was replete with sunshine and could not have been more perfect. While we were treated to a violin and guitar duo, Emanuel Martini the perfume DJ scented the air so we could breathe in the magnificent Au Pays de la Fleurs d’Oranger scents. We smelled and picked Rose Centifolia (rose de mai). This is the sweet smelling fruity rose with its irresistibly beguiling scent for which Grasse is renowned. We also made rose sugar with the petals we’d picked that I can’t wait to use in my kitchen. Virginie and Antoine Roux created Au Pays de la Fleurs d’Oranger in 1998 that now houses a range of perfumes and home fragrance. The family is firmly connected to the history of the region, as Antoine’s grandfather Victor was the flower commissioner to the perfume factories and this tradition continued with Antoine’s father Jean Roux. The Au Pays de la Fleurs d’Oranger creations ensure that the family stays linked to the area. Today, the flowers and trees that are cultivated in the Grasse region are the inspiration for the perfumes in the collection.

It is the blossoms and fruit of the Bitter Orange tree that lie at the heart of their first perfume range, created in 2010 – the Neroli Blanc Collection. Neroli Blanc, Neroli Blanc Intense and Neroli Blanc L’eau de Cologne comprise the collection. In 2013, a second range was introduced – Collection les Inédites, consisting of Figue Fruitée, Jasmine Révé, Tubereuse Rosée, Bergamote Boisée, and Lavande Ombrée. Rose Irisée and Violette Sacrée were added to the collection in 2014.

The perfumer of the house, Jean-Claude Gigodot spoke about the creation of the scents. He has had a long and distinguished perfume career and was the original perfumer for L’Artisan Parfumeur’s iconic Boule d’Ambre and has recently worked on the new Boule de Provence scent. Another of his contemporary creations is 46°N 08°E a natural blend featuring Swiss pine from the Richard Luscher Britos Natural Terroir range.

Au Pays de la Fleurs d’Oranger released two new perfumes at Esxence this year. Eau de Madeleine and Neroli Oud are both enchantingly beautiful perfumes that make me want to sniff my wrist again and again.

Eau de Madeleine is the new addition to  Les Inedits Collection. It’s bottled not in the standard white flacon but in a gorgeous black, that feels beautiful to the touch. Family ties are enhanced with this perfume as Virginie’s grandmother is the inspiration. The name of the perfume also makes reference to the French expression ‘La madeleine de Proust’ that recalls involuntary triggers to past memories. The central theme of this perfume is incense and it is omnipresent throughout.  Its presentation is not dour or overwhelming as is often the case. Here it is characterised by a delicate softness, a lightness and is sweetened by rose. Yet it has a delicate smoky quality too, although it’s not peppery at all but there’s a hint of something camphorous lurking in the shadows. I can almost visualise waves of hazy washes of colour swirling around me as if incense is puffing out shapes into the air. Eau de Madeleine for me evokes a sense of calm and is an introspective perfume. The base is divine as the perfume winds down with a smooth blend of vanilla, leather and sandalwood. Eau de Madeleine is not a forceful presence but it does have presence. It references vintage fragrances but Eau de Madeleine is a modern articulation with a striking meditative calm.

A Spring of Orange Blossoms by Sophie Anderson and Au Pays de la Fleur D'oranger Neroli Oud

Neroli Oud is a new addition to the Neroli Blanc Collection. On first appearances this may seem like an unusual incorporation to the range, however Au Pays de la Fleurs d’Oranger have succeeded to integrate this material by using it to highlight the brilliance of the orange blossom, rather than overpowering it. Neroli Oud is an interesting perfume of contrasts, marrying light bright orange blossom with the darker shades of oud. It’s as if there is a dance ensuing between the florals (there’s jasmine and rose as well as orange blossom) and the oud. The florals temper the oud, while the oud warms the florals.  It’s a delightful dance that keeps you on your toes wondering about the next move. Rest assured that this is a subdued take on oud and not a medicinal barnyard romp. If you’re not typically tempted by perfumes that have ‘oud’ in their title, then rein in the prejudices and open your mind for Neroli Oud. It is a surprising perfume that allures and beckons with a golden glow.

  • It is beautiful review. I very to read it. I enjoyed everything about in it. I had not chance yet to try any of Au Pays de la Fleurs D’Oranger perfume, but from the review those are sounds fabulous. If I will lucky enough to win, my choice is Neroli Oud. Thank you for this wonderful draw. I live in Europe.

  • Both of these fragrances sound really interesting. I love the idea of hazy incense shapes floating around, as well as florals dancing together. Though I love the bottle for the Eau de Madeleine, I think I would like to win Neroli Oud. I haven’t yet tried any Au Pays de la Fleurs D’Oranger scents, but I’ve been very curious about them, in particular Violette Sacree. Thanks for the draw, I’m a registered user in the US!

  • fazalcheema says:

I am intrigued by both fragrances because one plays on incense while the other plays on oud though subtle oud…but Neroli Oud appeals to me more because oud warms floral notes while florals reduce the animalic quality of oud…I have not tried any Au Pays de la Fleurs D’Oranger creation yet. thanks so much for the draw. My choice will be Neroli Oud. I am in the US

  • I was transported to France for a moment reading that. I bet that was quite an afternoon. I have not smelled any from this line. Based on the review, I’d like to win the new Neroli Oud. 🙂 USA

  • The history and provenance of these fragrances is interesting to read about. They seem to be a true reflection of the fruits and flowers in Grasse…I would love to visit there!
So Jean-Claude Gigodot is responsible for those gorgeous L’Artisan boules, mmmm!
I love incense and would like to try Eau de Madeleine. I am in Australia

  • For me it would be the Eau de Madeleine since I definitely love Incense. Oud can always be so so on my skin…..and the basenotes in Madeleine sound very complimenting and right up my alley. I am in the US 🙂

Thank you for sharing your enchanting day, Megan! I would love to taste the rose sugar, I think I’d better head over to Pinterest to see how to make some myself. 🙂 I am in the US and would love to try the Neroli Oud. Such a contrast in ingredients has me intrigued. Thanks for the lovely draw!

I enjoyed reading about how you enjoyed your day.

I would like to try Eau de Madeleine . Thanks for the chance, I’m from Canada

  • I love the idea of trying out perfumes in their “native habitat.” I would love to try Neroli Oud, and I am in the US. I have not tried any of their perfumes yet. Thank you!

Thank you for the draw! I am so jealous of Megan’s trip to Grasse, and that she could smell real rose de mai!

I am in the US, and have never tried anything by Au Pays de la fleur d’Oranger but would love to try Eau de Madeleine, it sounds lovely.

  • Systeme D says:

I always enjoy Megan’s reviews. They are both precise and evocative! I am delighted she was able to visit Domaine d’Olivine for this review. The outdoor setting must have been so perfect!

If I were to win this, I’d choose Eau de Madeleine, because I am a fool for incense.

    I am in the US.

  • Megain, FAB review! Loved the photo with the 3 of youean Claude Gigadot cGuerenland and yourself! I happen to be fa big fan of this house and these new ones will be added to my collection I’m certain. They both sound so beautiful so the choice is very difficult… thus why they may both be added 😉 They incense lover in me want to try Eau de Madeleine. There is however a battle going on in my mind as I am also a lover of a beautiful Oud and mixed with the florals the Neroli Oud sounds is shouting the loudest at the moment. So I would choose Neroli Oud. My favorite of this house…. difficult choice but would have to be Figue Fruité as it was my first purchase followed closely by Bergamote Boisée. I do own most of the collection from this house. I am in the US

  • Thanks to Megan’s review, I can smell Provence in Paris….
As a our fan, I’m very curious about “Neroli Oud”, which I’d like to sample, because an “unusual incorporation to the range”. My favorite one from Au Pays de la Fleur d’Oranger is “Lavande Ombrée”, a very nice smoky lavender…
I’m in France. Thanks for the draw!

  • How lucky to have spent a whole day surrounded by such a charming setting..a perfume lover’s dream!!These 2 new Au pays de la fleur d’oranger creations seem sublime… This house seems to encapsulate what I love about perfume, a sense of tradition and at the same time being in the moment without overwhelming trendiness.
I would love to smell the homage to Virginie Roux’s grandmother, Eau de Madeleine…a probable contender for my favourite from this Maison besides the Eau de Neroli Cologne( summertime gorgeousness)
I live in France. Thank you for this draw.

  • I am in the UK and I loved learning more about the range from Megan’s review. I have only tried a few but my favourite so far is Neroli Blanc Intense. I wish you could find them in the UK. I would love to try Eau de Madeleine.

  • I would have loved to be In sunny Grasse and pick Roses. I have Lavandre Ombré and wear it often
The contrast of neroli and Oud sounds appealing and the Rose and incense of Eau Madeleine also sounds really nice
I would be happy to win either
    I live in the U.S.
    Cheers
    Scott

  • Megan’s review transported me right to Grasse. 🙂

My favorite from the house is Neroli Blanc. I would love to try Neroli Oud if picked the lucky winner – that bottle is gorgeous!

Thank you dear Megan for this lovely review. I enjoyed the trip to Grasse and the history behind these fragrances and one day hope to be able to visit this place.
Have not experienced any perfume from this house so still have not favorite to mention but I would love to try Eau de Madeleine. I live in EU (Greece) and I thank you for this lovely draw.

  • Marcopietro says:

Family Roux history is very interesting and admirable the rooting branches in the territory of their Perfumes House research and business.
Unfortunately, I’ve never tried their scents. At the moment I’m immersed in the reading of Proust Recherche and the best choice for the accompanying smell is certainly Eau de Madeleine. That’s my choice.
    Thanks for the draw!
    I live in Italy.

  • This review makes it difficult to choose! Both sound amazing and I’d love either 🙂 Perhaps if I must choose I’ll go with Neroli Oud 🙂 I’m in the US.

  • i felt the smelly air of grass while reading the article!
i have a decant of Neroli Blanc Intense – love the smell of fleur d’orange. but the drydown is bit too much sweet for me. That’s why i’d like to try it in Cologne. i also like the Inedites collection – it’s nice&honest.
    i’m from Ukraine.
i’d like to win Figue Fruitee (cross my fingers)

  • I am beyond jealous that Megan got to spend the afternoon in Grasse with these talented perfumers. I have smelled most of this line and really enjoy Neroli Blanc Intense and because of that I am dying to try the Neroli Oud. I am in the U.S. Thank you for the draw!

  • I loved reading about Megan’s experience picking roses near Grasse – what a wonderful experience. I hope to be able to do that someday.
If I win, I’d choose Neroli Oud. Such an interesting combination. I don’t think I’ve smelled it in other perfumes. I’ve never tried any perfume from this line. Looking forward to trying my first.

Thanks for the draw. I’m in Canada.

  • Monica H. says:

The scent descriptions for both of the new scents have really inspired me and I look forward to testing these soon! I sway between Eau de Madeleine and Neroli Oud as both have elements I love, but for now I’d go with Neorli Oud as I feel like Neroli is what they do very well =) I am in Taiwan.

  • It sounds like Megan spent a wonderful day at Domain d’Olivine in Peymeinade near Grass. Love to spend a day like that. The rose sugar sounds delicious.

Reading the reviews both new renditions sound so wonderful. It’s hard to pick one that would like to win. I slighty prefer the description of Eau de Madeleine. I adore both incense and rose. So that would be my choice.

Never had the opportunity to try a Au Pays de la Fleur D’Oranger fragrance, but I would love to change that.

I live in the Netherlands. Thanks for this lovely draw!

  • I loved the insider’s view Megan shared about the story of La Famille Roux. Grasse must be a magical place!
I have tried all the perfumes from Aux Pays de la Fleur d’Oranger range, and I don’t have simply one favorite. I love Violette Sacree, Rose Irisee and Neroli Blanc eau de cologne the most!
I would like to win Eau de Madeleine from the draw. Thank you for the chance!

  • I lived in Valencia for a year and so have a special place in my heart for anything involving orange blossom or neroli. The blend of Neroli and Oud is intriguing, and I’d love to get the chance to try it! Really, though, I just love having discovered this blog recently. I live in the U.S. now. Thanks!

  • Neroli and oud seem like a really strange duo, but I am so interested in smelling it. Neroli is my favorite note and I have plenty in my collection.

So my choice to win would be Neroli Oud!

Canada and thank you so much for the draw!

  • Au Pays de la Fleur d’Oranger already has my love. After I had read about the house, I tried three of the fragrances: Rose Irisée, Neroli Blanc Intense and Lavande Ombrée. I like them all, especially Lavande Ombrée. It is the great fragrance for all the occasions. Neroli Blanc Intense is very long lasting on my skin and the similar is with Lavande Ombrée. This review is a lovely introduction to the house, but also a nice review of two newest fragrances. I like ingredients in both of them. Neroli Oud is described so poetically that I can almost smell it. Relation florals – oud seems very tempting and I think that I will love this one. I’m in the EU, Croatia. Thank you.

  • What a lovely review. I would love to try Madeline. The name of the perfume also makes reference to the French expression ‘La madeleine de Proust’ that recalls involuntary triggers to past memories. The central theme of this perfume is incense and it is omnipresent throughout.” I adore Neroli Blanc EDP I am in the USA.

  • Great great review! Neroli Oud would be my choice. I’m both a fan of neroli and oud and this sounds like a very unique combination. I also love the bottle designs! I have not tried anything from this house, but I might have to in the future. I am in Canada

  • Greg Mayne says:

Lovely review as always. I’ve never heard of this house but I am a neroli lover and that Neroli Blanc collection looks divine! With that being said, Neroli Oud is my choice

Wishing you all the best from Canada
