Perfume Review: Erik Kormann Dezember No 12 + Winter in Berlin Draw

winter cabin

Lucien Pissarro, 'Ivy Cottage, Coldharbour: Sun and Snow' (1916)

I have a dream when winter comes, and the world becomes still and cold.  I imagine that I have a secret cabin – a sturdy, weathered and ancient cabin tucked into a dark green forest into which I retreat while the snow and wind rage outside.  Somewhere I can go to and wait out the worst in the world.  And now I have found a scent that exquisitely captures what the interior of that winter dream cabin smells like. Berlin Perfumer Erik Kormann’s Dezember 12 (2013) is a warm and welcoming perfume comprised of 12 perfectly balanced notes, and part of his ongoing "Monat" series of scents, where the notes correspond to the month (he’s also released August, September and a bright green perfume, Juli, which has seven.)

winter solstice

Ruskin Spear, 'Snow Scene' (1946)

Dezember carries a wisdom that knows the length of the winter season, and how long you must wait to be truly warm.  The staying power of this scent is definitely long enough (at least 8 hours of undiminished development) to outlast any storm. The sillage, however, is surprisingly very intimate. Dezember wears as if it were designed for when you cannot stand from shivering, and someone places a blanket around your shoulders. The opening is comprised of brisk limes, a rich and deep cardamom note and dry, piquantly sharp pink pepper.  All three top notes combine into an exhilarating aromatic accord that focuses the nose for what’s to come.  The acidity of the citrus paired with the sharpness of the spices set the tone with cheerful, bright and rounded warmth that would be more than enough if Dezember never went any further.

But then the heart opens up into smoky and vanillic Peru and Gurjun balsams, and paired with rose and elemi notes.  The scent begins to take on a slightly sweeter and woodier aspect without losing the exotic savory tinge.  The rose is definitely in the background, as this is a winter scent and the warmth of dry resin, cardamom and sweet balsams are the point here.   There is an ancient and welcoming feel to this perfume that imparts a wondrous sense of calm, of serenity, with the vanillic overtones of the balsam heart notes taking the edge off of the aromatics perfectly.  The sweetness is never cloying, bland or assertive; it stays in a supporting role.  This scent lulls you over time, without becoming cumbersome or unfocused in any way.  It creates a steady, spice-infused hum that lasts for hours, taking its time to move from the opening spark of energizing citrus to the silvery balsams and on into the musky patchouli base.  Dezember is the scent to keep you company while the snow piles up on your windowsill, and will keep you warm and content until it thaws in Spring.

Notes:  lime, cardamom, pink pepper, elemi, rose, Peru and Gurjun balsam, patchouli, musk, floral and spicy notes.

  • My favourite month is April-still cool and a bit dark, but with the promise of spring.

The idea behind Dezember is what made me buy my house-an idyllic little 1.5 storey place, with evergreens and cedars. The smell of cold cedar and snow is one of my most precious memories.

Some storms here last 4-5 days so even Dezember’s longevity is no match for the Canadian winter 🙂

  • My favorite month is December because of the Christmas music and decorations. I own and love Eau de Frohliche, so I’m excited at the idea of trying another fragrance by Erik Kormann. Cardamom and balsam are two of my favorite notes. Thanks for the drawing! I’m in the US.

  • My favorite month is October, right when summer gives way to fall and the weather turns cooler. I would love to try Dezember. The rose in the background with the evergreen notes sounds interesting and different. I’m off off to check out Erik’s blog now! I’m in the US.

  • The citrus and pepper opening notes sound like this would be a perfect summer scent, so I’m compelled that it’s a winter fragrance. The rest of the notes — the resins and wood notes — sound lovely, and I think it must be a wonderful scent to have them all play so nicely together.

    US resident.

  • Cardamom is one of my favorite notes!I would like to try Dezember because of it’s description as “the scent to keep you company while the snow piles up on your windowsill, and will keep you warm and content until it thaws in spring.” Sounds perfect!
My favorite month is October. I love fall and Halloween.

  • Of course I want to try a scent that gives one a “wondrous sense of calm!” I also echo everything Barbara B says above though my favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. I’ve checked out Erik’s blog many times in the past. Love it! Thanks for the draw.

  • What a great opening paragraph, a cosy safe cabin in the snow…I love the hum of cardamom and can see why it would be perfect to accompany you into the winter forest.
We are back to front down here in Australia and my favourite month is October when the native flowers all explode into life.

  • That cabin in the woods with a snowstorm swirling around it? I want to be there too! Great description. I looked at First in Fragrance to see about ordering samples, but 29 Euro shipping? Is there any US outlets for this? September is my birth month so it’s my favorite by default. I love the breaking of the heat and a hint of the winter to come.

While reading Erik’s profile, I could not help but think of Poe’s novel in which he isolated himself from the rest of the world and retreated into a forest where he also made his own cabin. When Erik says his Dezember fragrance is inspired by winter, I imagine warm notes but this has so many notes which are associated with summer scent, thus, I am curious about it because it seems quite an unexpected creation for colder months. My favorite month is probably March even though my birth took place in August and I should have been biased towards it 🙂 Thanks Erik for the wonderful gift for this draw. I will check out your blog.

    I reside in the US.

  • They say I’m a woman of the spring, considering my skin hue, hair shade and all. And I do favor March or April best of all. Winters on Mediterranean are not harsh (I live in Croatia), but December No 12 could definitelly make it warmer. I am intrigued by the spicy notes – I could smell cardamon and vanilla cookies sizzling in the oven on some Christmas eve. Thank you!

  • Marcopietro says:

Nice review, the idea of creating perfumes with notes equal to the number of the month is fun, it will be interesting to discover how January’s smell will be! Dezember No 12 sounds very attractive, I guess it looks like an inviting, intimate and comfortable embrace.
My favorite month is June, in that season I perceive Nature in full hormonal storm.
    I live in Italy.
    Thanks for the draw!

  • This sounds lovely- the notes are really appealing and there couldn’t be a better time for it to come out. You can feel the cold coming these days. My favorite month might be May or June. Or maybe September and October. Have to love the spring and fall. But November and December are lovely for the holidays. Oooo, and who doesn’t love July? I’m in the US.

  • Dezember sounds amazing – I love the opening notes and am interested to see how they’ll pair together. I love the idea of the silage being a warm blanket, intimate and cozy. Favorite month is February, but probably because of a plethora of family birthdays that makes it feel special and extra celebrated. Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US!

  • September is my favorite month. Especially on island where I grew up. Weather is till perfect, sea is warm and I am can be alone on my favorite beach. I don’t like winter. Especially not snow. But winter scents I do. And I would like to try Dezember NO 12 due to his balsamic, musky and limey touch. Love the combination. I love Steve’s review – I don’t know if this will make sense, but his review is somewhat cosy and gentle. I am looking forward to read more of his reviews. Greetings from Germany.

  • I was born in December and have always loved the month of snow and celebrations and thought of it as my own . I have lived in that dream cabin , a three story log cabin high on a hill in a remote part of Eastern Washington , so that image really resonated with me . This scent sounds absolutely PERFECT so of course , a December baby like me MUST have it !

  • I love December! Here in Hawaii where I spent half of my time living it is far removed from the European cold and snow. I do love hpwever, spending time in the winter December climes of Europe and getting out in that snow. What resonates to me in this interview with Erik Kormann is the remote feeling I perceive from the cabin, the sheltering, the image of making it warm. I think this is a scent that will work in any December perhaps? I am US

  • I was born in December, in Germany, and that is one reason I would love to try this. Then, your description of a cabin tucked away in the woods has me wishing to smell this, too. Very cozy and inviting. I am in the U.S.

  • August (in Paris-France) is my favorite month : not too hot, not too cold, not too many tourists in town, beautiful public gardens… 😉 Never had the opportunity to sample Erik Kormann’s fragrances, but if… “Dezember is the scent to keep you company while the snow piles up on your windowsill”, here I am! I need it! 😉
    Thanks for the draw!

  • Anna in Edinburgh says:

    Hello there:-)

Dezember No 12 appeals to me because I absolutely need a warming blanket to help me get through the Northern winters: OH and Sprog are toasty-warm people by nature and I’m a frozen ice-pop by comparison! I get chilblains and look like a red-nosed reindeer for months on end – so attractive. I like Winter for how things look in the stark and bleak cold but it really doesn’t like me back!

I hadn’t thought about this before but my favourite month is February, when the first brave Spring flowers show that the year is turning.

Steve’s review made me shiver, genuinely, with anticipation at the thought of wearing something so cosy. What bliss!

  • I have been following Erik Kormann since I read about steampunk I think maybe here
I would really like to win this as I love citrus and myhrr but never thought of them together in 12 notes
    I am in the USA
I like the month of April cause its almost spring but can still surprise you

  • I love the month of November, when fall is on the cusp of winter. I’d love to try Dezember No 12 to experience the work of a perfumer that is as of yet unknown to me. I’m in the USA.

  • MikasMinion says:

I love the month of March. We have a short spring here and it gets hot quite early in the year but March always seems to be comfortable. I’m curious to experience a lime note in a winter fragrance, that wouldn’t have occurred to me. Anything that evokes a quiet cabin in the woods appeals to me. I am in the US. Thanks.

  • I am intrigued by Steve’s review after his opening description of the cozy winter cabin. My favorite month is October but I would love to try this scent for I love all the notes in it, especially the smoky balsamic woods. Thanks for the draw!

  • I’m taken with the note list first off, so I’d love this for the upcoming winter. What resonated with me was the 12 balanced notes used to create this fragrance. My favorite month where I live now is October. USA

  • My favorite month is December because of Christmas and family gatherings and I would like to try Dezember because of its notes (the heart notes which are smoky and vanillic with rose and elemi notes that make it sweet and woody while exotic).
What resonated to me with Steve’s review about Dezember is the fact that “this scent keeps you company while the snow piles up on your windowsill, and will keep you warm and content until it thaws in Spring”
I live in EU and I thank you for this draw.

  • I’d like to try Dezember to experience the aromatic top notes giving way to the warm balsamic heart of the fragrance. September is my favorite month because I associate it with going back to school and starting new activities. I hate the cold so I’d love to spend the winter in that secret, cozy cabin that Steve describes. I’m in the US; thanks for the draw.

  • Very intriguing review. I would like to try Dezember because of lovely notes. And because I love winter. My favorite month is November, when for the first time in the year it’s snowing and the air becomes clear and the nights are dark and frosty.
“..someone places a blanket around your shoulders” I like the association, it’s sounds very promising)
I’m international reader. Thanks for the draw!

  • I really love cardamom, and I haven’t found the perfect cardamom-centered perfume for meditation purposes! Moreover, it is coupled with patchouli and balsams! I guess Dezember could be one! What’s more, I am curious about the longevity, aand eager to check the 8-hour mark! And the dream of a secluded place…Thanks for the implications! Already felt cosy and ready for the snow to come! 🙂
I love all the seasons and months for different reasons, but I mostly love bright May, and melancholic October. And I cannot choose between them.
I am in Bulgaria (EU). Thanks for the chance!

  • I would like to try Dezember because I like the concept.
My favourite month is September, juat a bit removed from summer but still with all the pleasures of it available.
    I’m in the EU, ty

  • I was born in December and it is my favorite month. In this fragrance I think I will like the blend of woody notes with vanillic tones. I am in the EU.

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

Your imagery makes me want to hibernate in your ancient cabin in the snow. (Can I bring a book?) I would like to try Dezember because I’d like to see how that feeling is interpreted with a fragrance. My favorite month is October when the summer finally ends.

  • I really love Erik Kormann’s fargrances! This one sounds like it perfectly epitomizes the month of December, and that is why I would love to try it. I think October is my favorite month, but the whole fall/winter season leading up to the winter holidays are really cozy. This in particular reels me in: “Dezember is the scent to keep you company while the snow piles up on your windowsill, and will keep you warm and content until it thaws in Spring.” Yes, please. Thanks for the review, I’ll read it again and again. I’m in the U.S.

  • I, too, love the idea of a fragrance that will keep me company through the chill of winter until spring appears! As much as I love cozying up in front of a warm fire, my favorite month is April, when things really start to bloom! I live in the U.S.

  • I would love to try Dezember as it is my birthday month, and I am very interested in the creative direction of this house. Steampunk is a wonderful fragrance.
    I live in the U.S.

  • Valentine girl says:

My favorite month is February–when winter’s icy chill starts to lose its grip & the herald of spring’s return are the crocuses & snowdrops blooming through the snow. It’s the celebration of Imbolc & the month I curl up next to the fireplace, drinking tea & poring over my seed catalogs, planning my garden for the year….plus my birthday is February 14th!
Erik’s Dezember No. 12 sounds very appealing for me because of the lime, pink pepper & balsam notes…and I loved the description that the perfume wears like it was “designed for when you cannot stand from shivering, and someone places a blanket around your shoulders.” USA resident.

  • A friend of mine gave me a sample of this beautiful fragrance. Dezember No 12 is the only Erik Kormann’s fragrance I’ve tried. I love it. I enjoyed reading this review, it really reflects my view of Dezember. I also find intimate sillage and lovely warmth of Dezember.
My favorite month is June but December is my favorite cold month. Holidays and Christmas give it additional charm. I’m in the EU, Croatia. Thank you.
