Back in 2011, Andy Tauer of Tauer Perfumes created a limited edition fragrance for the holidays, some of which was given away during his annual advent giveaway, and the rest selling out quickly. I was a bit heartbroken not to obtain any, because the idea of a Tauer cologne was just too intriguing. Now, Andy has brought this fragrance, Cologne du Maghreb, into wider release, and I am delighted.

Cologne du Maghreb is a purely natural fragrance, like colognes have traditionally been, full of lovely citruses and herbs that are bright and refreshing. What is wonderful about this cologne is the slightly deeper underbelly of a fabulously floral lavender and clary sage. A touch of rose brings this cologne directly into Andy’s aromatic territory. The whole composition enjoys a dichotomy of being uniquely modern and full of history.

As with most colognes, the impulse is to spray lavishly, in order to get the full benefit of the juicy lemon and citrus opening that is a true antidote to summer heat.  Andy recommends spraying heavily then putting a shirt on right away to capture the scent. With Cologne du Maghreb, spray at will, but you want to make room for the full-bodied heart. The citrus notes hover at the edges throughout, and that gorgeous lavender provides a soothing counterpoint. As the fragrance progresses, it becomes a bit drier, a bit grassier, and quite comfortable; a good lolling in the grass perfume. The longevity is somewhat better than most colognes, but you’ll want to carry it with you to enjoy that refreshing opening during the day.

Andy Tauer is one of my favorite perfumers and I have been championing his work for several years. So, I am championing again, this time for a product that is different from Andy’s usual work, but still uniquely his. If you enjoy a good cologne, as I do, Cologne du Maghreb is definitely worth a try. I am also excited to report that this is the first in a series of proposed annual colognes.

Notes: Citrus accord, cistus, ambreine, cedarwood, java vetiver oil, bergamot, lemon, neroli, orange blossom, lavender, rosemary, rose absolute, rose essential oil, clary sage

I received my sample from Tauer Perfumes USA distributor, Hypoluxe. Cologne du Maghreb is available worldwide on the Tauer Perfumes website and online at  Twisted Lily   Lucky Scent and  Indigo Perfumery and in select stockists worldwide.

Thanks to Hypoluxe and Tauer Perfumes, we have a draw for a sample for each of five US readers, and a sample for each of five readers in the UK and Europe (excluding Russia, Ukraine, Italy, and Greece). That makes ten samples we are giving away. Let us know in the comments what you think you will like about this perfume, your favorite Tauer perfume, and where you live. Draw ends June 22, 2014.

  • I love the idea of a bright citrus evolving into herbal notes, with cistus in the background.
I do love many things that draw inspiration from North Africa, so am very interested in this cologne. I haven’t had the opportunity to try Andy Tauer’s other perfumes yet, but am taken by the fact that he refers to them as “fragrant sculptures.”
Thank you for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • Kim Morgan says:

I love citrus anything… most sour-citrus scents wear well on me. I’m excited about this one! US resident.

  • This sounds like a brilliant scent for summer. I would enjoy the citrus and herbal components. I love Andy’s creations, so it is difficult to choose a favorite; for now, I suppose I would choose L’Air du Desert Marocain.

  • What’s not to love about citrus and herbs? But I guess the cistus and ambreine make the difference, and I am pretty curious to find out how!
My fave is (not a surprise) L’Air du Desert Marocain.
    I live in the EU.
Thank you and Andy Tauer for the generous draw!

So excited. Love Tauer. Lemon note would be my interest in Mahreb followed by everything else of course. My favorite Tauer is L’Air du Desert Morocain. It was the only fragrance I’ve worn (and I wear tons) that my husband said smelled like me. I recently tried Zeta which is lovely too. I lost out on PHI but I hope it is available again the end of this year. I’ll be watching closely. I live in the US and would be so happy to experience samples of these great scents. Thanks very much to Hypoluxe and Andy Tauer!

  • Living in the USA my current favorite is L’Air du Desert Morocain. After reading several reviews now of Tauer’s all natural Cologne, I know that I would enjoy the wonderful citrus bright opening with the soothing blades of grass in the fresh mountain air.

  • I have been wearing Noontide Petals this spring. I thoroughly enjoy citrus colognes and to win this one by Tauer would be wonderful. Love to try something by Tauer that is something different from his usual focus. USA

  • Jennifer AM says:

    The floral lavender interests me.
I really enjoy wearing Noontide Petals and Le Maroc Pour Elle; LoneStar Memories I find the most intriguing.
    I am in USA

  • I love Carillon Pour Une Ange so would love to try this Cologne for the
Summer. Lavender and Citrus conjures up a really chilled experience!

  • I love all Andy’s perfumes I know. However, L’Air du Desert Marocain, Orange Star and Noontide Petals are my favorites. I also love Miriam. I just have to be interested about Tauer’s all natural perfume and I have feeling it’s something more than cologne. I’m in the EU, Croatia. Thanks.

  • I love the look of the notes in this. I don’t have a favourite Tauer perfume, as I haven’t tried any yet.
I’m in the UK. Thanks for the draw.

  • With vetiver, rose, and clary sage. The better question would be “what will I not like about this?” I also like the idea that it is a cologne – as lately most one sees anymore are eau de parfum and stronger concentrations. A quickie is sometimes good enough.

I am located in the US. Thank you for the draw.

  • ‘Very excited to experience Andy’s take on citrus, lavender and rose. My current favorite is 14 Noontide Petals, and I reside in the US.

  • USA
Thanks for the review and draw!
I’m a big Tauer fan, first place is a tie between Dark Passage and LDDM. Want to try Cologne du Maghreb because it’s a great lolling in the grass scent–that’s my thing this summer! It sounds refreshing and natural.

  • Laurentiu says:

I am really curious how Andy Tauer views and approaches this part of perfumery: the colognes. Being used with his warm, oriental and opulent creations, this cologne will be something different. From him I like very much L’Air du Desert Marocain.

I live in Eu. Thank you for the draw!

  • I’m so happy to see you review this cologne! I’ve loved so much of Andy’s creations over the years and picked this one up as soon as it was (again) available. I’ve not been disappointed 🙂

  • ChristineB says:

I very much like many of Andy Tauer’s perfumes, my favourite probably being Incense Rose and I love the sound of the lavender and clary sage in the cologne. I live in the UK.

  • I love the idea of mixing citrus and herbs. There is nothing more refreshing on a humid summer’s day. I’ve been wanting to sniff Andy’s work and this one sounds like the perfect introduction to his line.
    I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • I think it will have an airy herbal quality that I love in the heat.Plus I love Andy’s other fragrances. I live in the US. Thanks.

  • As with many, L’Air du Desert Morocain is my favorite, instant classic. I love colognes in general, so an Andy Tauer creation is bound to be a delight. US 🙂

  • I would like to try this one in the summer. My favourite Tauer is L’air du desert marocain, but I don’t know many parfumes from this house. I,m in Europe (Spain)

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

While citrus colognes are typically bright and light like the early morning sunlight before the air becomes oppressively hot, I think I will like that Cologne du Maghreb is more of a twilight fragrance and the relief that comes in the end of the day when the shadows are longer and senses are reawakened. I live in the US and have not tried a Tauer perfume.

  • I like Andy s idea to create cologne – so necessary for everybody to have one in his wardrobe for summer time. I think combination of rosemary and lavender can be a bit spicy and can add interesting note to citrus cologne. Incense Rose is my favourite. Thanks. I am in central EU.

  • I was fortunate enough to receive Cologne du Maghreb during the special holiday when Andy first created it. At the time he had no thought to release it and I wonder if he has updated the formula for regular release. I hope to find out!

  • Citrus and summer belong together. Tauer’s adventurous pairings intrigue me and hope I get the opportunity to experience the Maghreb mix! I live in lovely Vermont.
