Masque Milano Fragranze was started in 2013 as an additional component to Masque Milano Cosmetics, which was formed in 2010 by two friends with a common dream, Allesandro and Riccardo. Their first three fragrances, Terralba, Montecristo, and Lucie ed Ombre, were introduced last year at Esxence, and this year their fourth fragrance, Tango, by perfumer Cécile Zarokian, made its debut at Esxence as well. Each fragrance represents a different act and scene in an opera, and Tango is Act III, Scene IV, described thusly:

“Whispers all around you, the party is merry. The soft music in the background gets gradually louder. A crescendo. A glass, another glass. Ron y miel. Inebriating, amber nectar. Inebriating as the smell of the blooming jasmine, carried along by the warm summer gusts. A crescendo. You meet her gaze – she whispers a couple of words. You spot it – it is Lunfardo. Your forehead drenched with sweat. Salt melts in the sugar of the liquor. The shuffling Gotan rhythm makes you brave, the night and the tango are on your side. A crescendo. Deafening summons. The air gets even hotter. You are aware it will hurt you. Yet you can’t resist. You stand up and head towards the dance floor… her face lights up with a smile that brightens the night… That is all you long for, now.”*

Mme Zarokian was given the task of creating a scent that would start softly and then build to a crescendo, which is no mean feat, plus be an ambery Oriental perfume with a Latin sensuality.

Tango does open fairly modestly, with a softly spicy, warm aura. Before too long, though, it starts to smell a little dangerous. The scenario that unfolded in my mind is similar to the description above, but with my own perceptions involved. Imagine being in a softly lit room that has red walls covered in unusual, decadent art, with vases of flowers in full bloom set on heavy sideboards. The dim room is full of dancing revelers and is a bit overheated and stifling from body heat, the smell of everyone’s perfume and the flowing liquors. Feeling woozy, you step outside onto a nearby balcony flooded with moonlight, to find that you are surrounded by the scent of blooming jasmine. Unable to resist, you finally succumb to the heady fragrances that surround you and float back into the party, meeting the eye of an exotic stranger who whisks you onto the dance floor, pressing your body to theirs in the sultry embrace of the tango.

Perfumes that are deep and dark and sensuous always make me sit up and take notice. Finding one that meets my rather rigorous expectations is always a treat, and this one does. It verges on overwhelming, and I can’t imagine wearing it on a warm day. I would wear it if I planned to be trapped in a sultry room with exotic people doing tango, though. It is sexy as all get-out, but not carnal in an animal-smell way. It is the heat of the fire, of sweat, of ripe blooms, rich liquor, and dangerous attraction. The far drydown is exquisite, with a sweet richness that really satisfies me. I will enjoy this fragrance in cold weather, and anytime I want to feel especially sensuous.

Notes: Bergamot, black pepper, cardamom, Sambac jasmine absolute, Damascena rose oil, cumin, patchouli, vanilla bean, tonka bean, melilot (sweet clover) absolute, amber accord, leather accord, benzoin, muscs

The founders of Masque want to only make perfumes that are daring, artistic, and passionate. They always meet their perfumers in their labs first, to find a relationship and experience the work. Their collaboration with Mme Zarokian, who had several launches at Esxence this year, was definitely successful, in that she was able to bring their vision to life in the best way possible. I will definitely have my eye on this brand.

I received my sample from Riccardo Tedeschi of Masque Milano. Tango is available from Twisted Lily Fragrance Boutique and Apothecary in New York, $240 for 100 ml.

Tama Blough, Managing Editor

Thanks to the generosity of the folks at Twisted Lily, we have a draw for a sample for two readers in the US. Please let us know what appeals to you about this perfume or your favorite tango dancer or song. Draw ends May 2, 2014.

Note: We recently reviewed another fragrance that Mme. Zarokian launched at Esxence, Jul et Mad Acqua Sextius.

*Lunfardo is a slang developed by convicts, that spread to Buenos Aires, particularly lower classes. It has spread through the usage of it in tango lyrics. "Gotan" is the Lunfardo version of "Tango" (I also recommend the modern tango music from the Gotan Project). Ron y miel is a honey rum.

  • Wow, Tama, you’ve made this sound very appealing to me. “Deep, dark and sensuous” sounds right up my fragrant alley! I am in the US

  • How can anyone resist a perfume described as”deep, dark and sensuous”? That list of notes is an all star lineup of my favorites. Your description of the dance, the heat and sweat and passion, is irresistible and the painting “Tango Room” really captures the feel. Thanks for the excellent review!

  • Love Gotan Project, but really love Astor Piazzolla’s “Oblivion,” probably my single favorite tango song. Would love to sample this fragrance! I love in the US

  • Valentine girl says:

Ovidio José “El Cachafaz” Bianquet and I both share the same birthdate (Feb 14), so he is without a doubt my favorite tango dancer of all time. Although I must admit the tango scene of Rudolph Valentino (another valentine reference!) in “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” is dancing a close second. I love how he knocks the guy out, grabs the girl, and then continues dancing the tango! Now that is “dangerous attraction”! I would love to try this new perfume from Mme. Zarokian. I really enjoyed the recent post interviewing her and learning about her background & how she got started in the perfume industry! USA resident.

  • This is enough for me to want to try it, “…It is the heat of the fire, of sweat, of ripe blooms, rich liquor, and dangerous attraction…”. 🙂

  • I’m a competitive collegiate ballroom dancer and perfume enthusiast, so this makes my heart skip a beat. My favorite dancers are probably Mirko and Edita, with Victor and Anastasia close behind. My favorite songs to dance tango to are probably Romance-Noir, Viva la Vida, El Tango de Roxanne, Vivaldi’s Winter… and many more. I’m in the US.

  • I think I’d like to be trapped in a sultry room with exotic people doing tango! Lol I’ve been reading about this perfume and I’m dying to try it. Thanks for the fantastic review and the draw. The winner of this one will be lucky. 🙂

  • Oh my! What doesn’t appeal about Tango? Pepper, jasmine, amber? Check, check, and check. This one ticks all my boxes on the “loved perfume notes” list and I would love to try it. Thanks for the great review, and I’m in the US.

  • The Chandos says:

Deep, dark, and dangerous! I’ve heard so many great things about this one that I can’t believe I haven’t yet tried it. I love the idea of being trapped in a room with people doing the tango. Sweat, ripe blooms, rich liquor, and dangerous attraction? Sign me up! I live in the US.

  • I love seductive fragrances, even when I’m sitting alone on the couch 🙂 Sign me up too! I live in the US.

  • My favorite tango song is La Cumparsita by Julio Iglesias.
    Thank you for the draw!
    I’m in the U.S.

  • If Tango is even a fraction as exciting as Tama’s review, I really want to smell it : ) Thanks for the draw.

  • Mary Healy says:

El Choclo is my favorite Tango song. It conjures up wonderful memories of my parents dancing to it even though they lived in Ireland and were Irish, it opened up an International world for me that I could only imagine. Now I live in NYC and have learned how to tango. I happened upon Twisted Lily only last weekend and was transfixed by the incredible scents and I’m so happy to see an opportunity to maybe receive a sample if I am to be so lucky. Your scent Tango has me smitten from the description and the notes of bergamot, cardamom, Demascena rose oi, patchouli, amber and the other wonderful notes. I can’t wait to try it…I hope. Thank you.

  • I would love to try this perfume! I don’t dance, but your description of this perfume (especially the cardamom and bergamot on top of the jasmine) makes me wish I did. I am in the US, thank you.

  • Fazal Cheema says:

i really find the notes interesting such as Jasmin absolute, rose damascena, and leather accord…this perfume seems to have captured the body smell of tango dancers.. i am in the US

  • I enjoy greatly cardamom in fragrance. So yes, I’d be anxious to test this one.

  • This sounds just gorgeous. I would love to smell how sweet clover mixes with those oriental notes. I’m intrigued! I’m in the US. Thank you!

  • A sexy ambery oriental…what’s not to like!? My favorite tango dancer(s) are Morticia and Gomez Addams.
Livin in the USA……Thanks for the draw!

  • I would love to see how jasmine shines in this composition as I imagine it would be my favorite part of the development. I’ve heard so many great things about the line’s other scents, I need to find a way to try them soon 🙂

I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • The name and overall concept strikes me as romantic, so I’d say that’s the most interesting part. I liked Montechristo but found it too dry. This one sounds like it’d have more balance.

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

This appeals to me because it is out of my comfort zone (daring, artistic, passionate) and I want to try something new. I’m not too familiar with the Tango, but loved watching them dance in Evita. I live in the US

  • I love what Caetano Veloso, the Brazilian singer, did with the tango on his masterpiece album Fina Estampa, particularly the song O Samba e O Tango.
    I live in the USA.

  • Barbara B says:

I love a sexy, ambery oriental. Cardamom also appeals to me.I am in the US and have never done a tango (except for joking around as kids)!
