CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery: Tania Rueben of Pure Natural Diva Botanicals + Be a Natural Diva Draw

Tania Rueben , Pure Natural Diva Botanicals Perfumes

Profile: I was born and raised on the West Coast of Canada.  Heritage wise I'm a Euro blend, Irish, Scottish, English, French, with rumors of Asian Indian – I attribute my enchantingly dark brown eyes to that rumor.  My mother was a teenage hippie, which meant growing up I moved… a lot.  During my childhood, we lived in on a communal dairy farm, an Indian reservation, in a teepee, and I changed schools 17 times by the time I graduated!  At the age of 16 I ventured out on my own, in search of a "normal" life.  Eventually I landed in Los Angeles and married a successful writer.  When my husband and I married, I became a stepmom to his son; a little over a year later our daughter was born.  Sixteen months after that, my best Christmas present ever was our youngest son.  In addition to our littles we have three pit bull rescues, two bearded dragons, and crickets (lots and lots of crickets!).  Perfectly normal.

I came to the world of natural perfumery through my eco savvy lifestyle website, Pure Natural Diva.  Since the birth of my children I had been on a quest to find simple ways to live greener and healthier.  One area of ongoing challenge was fragrances.  Unable to find a natural perfume that truly spoke to me, I began formulating simple (VERY SIMPLE) essential oil blends for my personal use.  It was this foundation that gave me the courage to tackle the creation Pure Natural Diva Botanicals. It didn't take me long to determine that natural perfumery would be my starting point.

PerfumeCollage

I set out to formulate a beautiful, appealing botanical fragrance line.  The scents would be PURE, NATURAL, and DIVA.  I actually wasn't sure I could be the nose behind the brand, but I knew I wanted to try.  I was drawn into the entire experience.  Formulating morning, noon, and night.  Each scent had numerous renditions.  Tiny vials accompanied me everywhere I went; friends were enlisted to smell and test at each stage.  I relied on their candid feedback to steer me in the right direction. Months later, I flew across the country to debut my efforts in New York City at the Elements Showcase  in January 2012, .  I showed up on my own, uncertain about how my work would be regarded by the perfuming community.  I left confident, as time after time friends pulled others over to my perfumes — a confidence that grew as publications such as WWD and CaFleureBon discovered Pure Natural Diva.

American Perfumery: Freedom and opportunity are boundless in America, and I believe that spirit is deeply entrenched in American Perfumery.  American Perfumers have the freedom to create without constraints.  Whether it's Mandy Aftel's quest for the exotic and unusual, Alexandra Balahoutis' spirit to innovate, or Anya McCoy's passion to unite artisan natural perfumers — each of us has our own unique voice and palette, and each one of us bringing our distinct vision to the landscape of American perfumery.

From the Old Garden No 2 -Georgia O'Keefe

Favorite American Artist: Georgia O'Keeffe’ work is amazing. I love the way she captured color, light, and shape in her work.  She also remained true to her personal vision throughout her career.  I aspire to have the same tenacity, vision, and vibrance in my natural perfumery.

What a lovely set of products! I’m in the US and think I’d fall in love with ‘Elixir to Go’. Tania’s amazing in that she’s a self-made perfumer, and manages to beautifully blend family and her perfume business-that’s awesome and admirable. Thanks for the draw op!

  • I find it interesting that Tania, like so many of your interviews with self made perfumers, started out with a bohemian or hippie lifestyle. Maybe this infuses them with a fearlessness? I don’t know, but it’s interesting. I would love to try Diva to Go. Thanks

  • I found it fascinating that Tania has two bearded dragons!

Diva To Go sounds perfect for me! I am in the US.

  • Tania, thank you for your kind mention. I remember when you joined the Yahoo group that you had a clear vision and I’m so happy to see it coming true for you.

  • Would love to try Elixir to Go. I am inspired that Tania followed her vision and created the life she wanted to live! I’m in the US.
    Thanks!

  • i SO dig the fact that she showed up at the Elements Showcase by herself… HERE I AM! you GO, girl. 😉

the crickets made me cringe as i imagine they are bearded dragon fodder… but hey, a dragon’s got to eat, after all. (and fair maidens are rather hard to come by these days.)

Natural to Go with it’s “rose bordered citrus grove” sounds like a lovely place to be!!

and, as always, THANK YOU, cfb for profiling another incredible natural perfumer!

lot of surprises such as Tanya’s Asian Indian heritage…Tanya is Canadian but glad she has fallen in love with NY and looks upto Mandy Aftel and Anya McCoy..my choice will be Elixir to go and i am in the US

  • I would love Elixer to Go. I found the focused energy Tania had to get her scents going fascinating–bringing her vials everywhere with her and enlisting the help of friend to try her scents. That’s the dedication it takes to follow a dream.

  • I admire the way Tania dealt with her past and found a way to use the free spirit of her upbringing on her own terms. And she loves Georgia O’Keefe! I would choose Pure as it sounds like a breath of spring. I’m in the US.

  • Moving 17 times must have been stressful. That’s like a move every year more or less. The bohemian lifestyle seems to spur massive amounts of creativity! I am glad Tania has turned her life experience into a successful business venture. I would love to try Elixir. I’m in the US and thanks for the draw!

  • I am interested in Elixir To Go. I find Tania’s multi-ethnic background interesting as well and imagine that it bears a creative influence on her work.

  • I found it interesting that Tania started out in life with a hippie influenced background and then wanted more of a traditional lifestyle in a large city. I think Natural To Go, with its rose, citrus and green notes sounds really nice!

  • I would choose Elixir…it is very interesting the way she eventually came to perfumery; from a desire to live healthier! I am in the US and I have liked the CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery page.

  • These sound incredible! I’m moving toward using more naturals and these seem to be something really special. I would choose Elixir as I love osmanthus. Tania seems so passionate and committed to her work. Very inspiring. I’m in the US and I’ve liked the Profiles page. Thank you for the draw!

  • Tania’s gypsy childhood sounds fascinating (living in a teepee?), and I love that she has two rescued pitbulls. She sounds like a true creative spirit, and I’m excited and inspired by her brave entrepreneurship. I would love to try Diva. Thank you for sharing your profile and products, Tania!

  • I love that Tania is also a rescue dog person, they really rescue us. All of the perfumes sound amazing , my first choice is Elixir followed by a nose, Natural. Thanks for your generosity.

  • I loved reading about her growing confidence thanks to her experience of the perfume community at Elements Showcase and online at CFB!
Also Georgia O’Keefe is one of my all-time favorites too.
    I’d definitely choose Diva! USA

Tania personifies a second generation of lifestyle freedom. And she has a willfulness to complete a vision. My choice is Elixir to Go. usa

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

I think I would like Elixer. Based on the review, it sounds a lot like Tania – outside the box.

  • I found Tania had an interesting life growing up in so many different places and homes. I also liked that she too had a son on Christmas. I would like to give Elixir to go try. It sounds wonderful. Thank you for the draw!
