Designer Greg Lauren (nephew of Ralph Lauren)  launched his first fragrance, which is the second scent in the Barneys New York Designer Fragrance Collection. The perfumer is Ralf Schwieger (who created the first in the collection L'Wren Scott for Barneys).

Greg worked to create a completely unique design for the bottles of the fragrance that were created, personalizing each one. He distressed each bottle cap with a hammer, chlorine, sandpaper and a little paint. After mounting his eponymous label on the front (with intentional creases and folds), Mr. Lauren hand splashed paint onto each bottle and placed pieces of masking tape across it with Greg Lauren hand written with a sharpie.

No two bottle are alike and all are one of a kind pieces of art which reflect Mr. Lauren's aesthetic. I was intrigued by this concept so I reached out to Ralf Schwieger about the creation of Greg Lauren For Barneys New York Perfume:"Greg’s fragrance is based on the duality of sweet and salty notes.When we first met and evaluated raw materials, Greg was smitten by the smell of Tonka beans and he really enjoys sweet notes like vanilla, coconut and maple syrup. In order not to be gimmicky and food-like I tried to balance the sweet notes, which constitute the base of the fragrance, with something salty. The sweet accord is built around Tonka beans, vanilla and coconut, the salty aspect is mainly a sandal woody-ambery-mossy shell and not a polished one, rather like the French ‘gros sel’ –  the big chunky crystals with a lot of texture. A little bit like dark chocolate with salt sprinkled over it, or salted caramel: it reveals the aroma.

Greg wanted the object (scent and bottle) to look as if it had been discovered in his art studio – I was instantly reminded of Francis Bacon’s famously messy London studio. The scent, as the bottle, does not have a shiny surface – it is stripped away and you are drawn right into the essence of it."

 

Ralph admitted he did not get a clothing allowance, but was happy to tell me that each limited edition bottle includes a distressed cotton pouch which can be used to wrap the bottle, similar to the designer's use of canvas in his clothing line.
