Ramon Monegal

Stanley Marcus was an avid art collector, and in 1951 he wanted to extend his love of art to the Neiman Marcus customer. He commissioned artist, Alexander Calder to create a large-scale mobile entitled, Mariposa, and with this first commission the Neiman Marcus Art Collection was born. Some sixty years later, Master Perfumer Ramon Monegal has created a fragrance exclusively for Neiman Marcus entitled, Pure Mariposa, inspired by the butterfly, and specifically tailored for the women that frequent the famous luxury store. In 2009, Monegal launched his spectacular niche line to well-deserved acclaim. Monegal comes from a distinguished family of perfumers, and represents the fourth generation of the founders of the House of Myrurgia, the prestigious perfume house born in Barcelona, Spain.

Pure Mariposa is surprising and graceful. At first there is a cacophonous accord that strikes a dissonant tone. It’s a citrus accord that has a likeable blast of pith and bite. The yuzu note brings with it a pithy longevity combined with orange and bergamot top notes. The fragrance continues to sparkle with an aldehydic wave, think fizzy like ginger ale, and ozonic notes, that are like the atmosphere after a rainstorm, these two remain constant throughout the entire composition. The aldehydes and ozonic notes also bring a transparency to the fragrance that is as delicate as the wings of the insect that inspired it. The heart is complex yet executed with restraint. A green floral accord creates a rounded heart, namely fig, blackberry, and oakmoss mix with heady white notes of jasmine, lily of the valley, tuberose, and osmanthus. All of these floral notes blend together, none jumping out in front of the other. These heart notes seem tamed by the hand and authority of the perfumer. I can’t help but think of nectar when I’m wearing this fragrance, there is a lovely powdery almost honeyed sweetness that attracts, and keeps me wanting to wear it. The powerful woody base concludes with sandalwood, iris, peach, and tonka bean. Initially, Pure Mariposa creates a flurry of movement, but it ultimately settles lovingly on the skin, every so often its power stirs and reminds me of its presence.

Evocation of Butterflies by Odilon Redon (1912)

The ephemeral butterfly is a symbol of the psyche. Butterflies exemplify grace, flight, and are a reminder to live life to the fullest. Their life cycle is a journey of constant change and adaptation that involves incredible hard work, profound stillness, and ultimately a miraculous transformation. I found many moving stories written about encounters with butterflies that appear soon after the death of a loved one; survivors know that the butterfly represents the life force of the departed. While writing this, I began to notice images of butterflies everywhere I went, on my son’s lunch box; the framed print above my dining table that illustrates the four stages of metamorphosis. A film that tracked the migration patterns of the Monarch butterflies, they fly south to Mexico by the millions, and Odilon Redon’s symbolic paintings inspired me. At the office I spotted a butterfly print on a lonely shelf with a Matsuo Basho haiku that reads, “Wake butterfly, it’s late, we’ve miles to go together.”

  • “Wake butterfly, it’s late, we’ve miles to go together.” — how very beautiful! As a child, I was given a large blue Emperor butterfly framed and pinned in glass box, and I still have it today. Ive always been entranced by their delicacy and beauty. I’ve never tried any Ramon Monegal fragrance and I’d love for this butterfly-inspired one to be the first.

  • Sounds lovely! The bottle and box art are pretty, too. I think butterflies must have a sense of humor– I’ll never forget the time I was at a water park and watched a bald man go down the water slide with a great big butterfly perched right on top of his head. It stayed there for many trips down the slide, I wonder if the man even knew it was there!

  • Every summer when our purple butterfly bushes bloom, the orange monarchs find our front yard. What a joy to be able to watch them stop on their way to Mexico.

  • I once found a butterfly wing, a single one, black velvet and in it a rough red heart. I still have it.

  • Janet in California says:

I have liked all of the Monegal fragrance I have tried. But I find myself reaching for Cotton Musk for work more than any other. Cuirelle at bedtime!

  • When I lived on Durham, NC, I would frequently take my kids to the Museum of Life and Science. Our favourite thing to do was to walk through the Butterfly House in the winter. Once, we happened to be there when it was time to release newly hatched butterflies into the pavilion. The look on my two very small kids’ faces was priceless, particularly when a butterfly chose to alight on one of them. Thank you for the draw!

  • Sounds like a lovely fragrance. I’m definitely smitten with Cuirelle…going to have to spring for a full bottle one of these days. Thanks as ever for the draw!

  • Haven’t sampled any from this line.. Encounters with butterflies are common for me. My nieces are so amazed by the interactions that they now scan the stores for things with butterflies for me.. Thanks for the review and lovely art 🙂 Thanks also to the contributor for the dram..

  • The Indianapolis Zoo has a lovely butterfly house, I could spend hours there. And the best butterflies on film are in the movie Bright Star. Thanks for the chance, the perfume sounds and looks like spring.

  • When we go to the Minnesota State fair we like to go and visit the Butterfly Hatchery…its really cool, they will come and sit on you. As far as my favorite Ramon Monegal I will have to go with Ambre di Luna and Lovely Day 🙂 Looking forward to trying this fragrance its sound beautiful.

  • One early summer evening we were out for a stroll along the LI Sound with our four year old daughter. She had run up ahead and we heard her absolutely squeal with delight. She led us to a bush that was covered with beautiful butterflies. It was an amazing sight and a wonderful memory.

  • I had a wonderful encounter with a butterfly in 1977 when I visited friends in the Peace Corps in Ecuador.

We were walking a trail near the Amazon River, and there were dozens and dozens of butterflies on the side of the mountain and flying around. I wore a scarf around my neck and one large butterfly landed on my scarf and accompanied me the rest of our walk. It’s a memory I treasure.

  • I just started sampling Monegal’s fragrances and Cherry Musk and Umbra are my faves! Thanks for the draw! 🙂

  • I live on the coast of California near Natural Bridges State Park. There is a Monarch butterfly winter nesting spot in the park. It is a magical place.

I went there with my kids when they were young. On warm days, the butterflies are everywhere, flitting lazily through the air. When it is cold, they cling to the tree branches and the trees are literally covered with butterflies.

    Thanks for the drawing.

  • This perfume sounds intriguing.
We lived in Borneo for a couple of years. There was a national park about a mile hike away, and when you arrived there was a shaded swimming hole with a waterfall plunging down 200feet over the cliff. But the most magical thing was the air was thick with butterflies I’m this rainforest. The coolest and rarest ones were bright blue and the size of my palm. It certainly helped solidify this girl into a conservationist.

  • I haven’t had the opportunity to try any of the Ramon Monegal fragrances so unfortunately I can’t comment on that. Last summer I visited our local butterfly exhibit in a tropical Conservatory. I stood in front of the glass boxes and watched dozens of butterflies emerging from their chrysalises. It was amazing!

  • Fazal Cheema says:

  • lumpkinluv says:

I love butterflies i had a great encounter About 8 years On a lunch break On accident i ran into a flock of yellow butterflies they filled the sky for a block and a half

  • FearsMice says:

The butterfly conservatories at Calloway Gardens in Pine Springs, Georgia are magical anytime, but especially so at Christmas. Having a butterfly light on your hand and flex its wings is a delight. It’s amazing that such delicate creatures are strong enough to travel thousands of miles during their lifetimes…

  • This is a must have for me!
At my nephew’s funeral, a butterfly landed on
my shoulder, and I knew it was a personal message.
When I now just read that the butterfly represents the
life force of the departed, it gave me chills!!
Please enter me in the draw…Thanks!

  • Many years ago, a butterfly landed on the fuzzy bright pink velour bathing suit I was wearing, delicately unspiraled her curled-up tongue to taste it, and, finding nothing but dry fabric, re-curled her tongue into that perfect spiral, and flew away. It was a delightful moment!

  • I once found several Monarch chrysalis’s(sp?) on the underside of a brick flower planter. They were a beautiful iridescent green. I would love to win Pure Mariposa, it sounds delicious!

  • just breathe says:

I have visited a Butterfly Farm near my home on and off since I was young so I have had many encounters with them 🙂 !!
    thanks for the draw!

  • One of the most magical experiences I have ever had with butterflies involved a visit to Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was so wonderful to be in the tropical garden and have butterflies flying all around you and landing on you. It’s a special memory. Would love to smell this. Thank you.

  • My first grade teacher used to hatch (?) monarchs for her classes. We’d feed the caterpillars, watch them go through the chrysalis phase, then release them outside. Only, one time, they “released” themselves into the classroom during reading class. She hadn’t noticed them breaking through that morning. So it was a mad dash to carefully catch the monarchs, then let them go through our windows.

  • As a child I would run around with a net to catch butterflies. Once caught, I would take the butterfly out of my net, cusp it gingerly between my two hands and make a wish. I would then let the butterfly go. Many of my wishes have come true. Others I am still awaiting. Thank you, Valerie, for this beautiful post.

  • My fave scent by RM is Ambra Di Luna, it’s goregous! My favorite and most memorable encounter with a butterfly was this beautiful, large, black and white Monarch-type one. It just remained still as it let me snap many photographs of it, I got very close and got micro shots. It was amazing! And so nice of it to let me snap so many pics!

  • A few years ago I visited the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Pittsburgh. In addition to the beautiful plants, there was a temperature-controlled butterfly room. What a delight it was to walk among these glorious creatures! I could have spent the entire day there.
I would love to try a sample of Pure Mariposa. Thank you for this generous draw.

  • susie frankel says:

Just now, pulling a few fresh weeds I discovered a butterfly on the ground, must be a fresh beauty. Does a butterfly tatoo count? happy to be in the draw.

  • Have not tried a Ramon Monegal fragrance yet. Impressed that he is a fourth generation perfumer. I love Maja by Myrurgia, one of my first perfumes!
The Detroit Zoo has a wonderful Butterfly House, which both my children loved!

  • Butterflies were part of the theme of my wedding, so I suppose that’s my most important encounter with them. 😉 Thanks for the draw!

  • Femmelady says:

Ambra Di Luna for sure! I’ve visited many butterfly houses, my favorite in Vienna. Such lovely flitting creatues. We were visited by Monarch’s on migration last year!

  • wefadetogray says:

I have not yet tried any Monegal perfume but butterflies live in my own house

I just adore butterflies and have encountered many while traveling but the most beautiful white loving and purest of them all I found it in a garbage site on a corner on a Spring day. The most beautiful thing! I thought (referential mania) that it was there for me.

  • My fav. Ramon monegal fragrance is Agar Musk, sweet musk with oud sparkling background in this woodsy concoction. Love it.

    Thanks

  • I have encounters with butterflies every September when the monarch butterflies pass through my bay town on their voyage south. It’s a magical time. Thanks for the draw!

  • Thanks for the draw!
My favorite is Cherry Musk. Delicious cherry with a hint of musk.

  • Mary Carol says:

The state fair where live has a butterfly pavillion. When I go there, I always wear bright colors and a perfume that has both floral and fruit notes. Many butterflies land on me, and children walk up to me and ask if they can take one – they think I work there!

My favorite Ramon Monegal perfume is Cherry Musk.

    Thank you for this drawing!

  • Datura5750 says:

I live very close to a Monarch refuge, so I am lucky enough to have beautiful butterflies all year.

  • Thank you for this wonderful draw. The encounter which comes to mind is one of when I was younger, and caught a pretty little butterfly and noticed a white powder left behind on my hands. My younger brother told me that because I had made it shed its powder, the butterfly could no longer fly. Since then, I never caught a butterfly again.

  • I was fortunate enough to spend the night at Las Pozas de James in Xilitla on a full moon during an awesome thunderstorm. The following morning, waking up to the freshly scrubbed jungle was beyond description and we found that clouds of of amazing tropical butterflies had wakened early and were sparkling around in the air over the pools below our balcony.

  • I went to my local Neiman Marcus this weekend and sniffed Pure Mariposa and had a sample made up. So far I’m liking it quite a bit and am considering buying a bottle, though I’ll make myself finish my sample before I do to make sure.
