New Niche Fragrance Review: Byredo Black Saffron – The Symbol of India in Scent + Sample Draw

Saffron is one of the rarest, costliest, and most distinctive of spices. The delicate orange threads are the stigma of a crocus flower, which have to be painstakingly harvested by hand. The spice imbues everything it is used in with its distinctive golden-orange color, and it is the signature shade of Buddhist monk’s robes. Cooking with saffron requires a delicate hand; I have made saffron rice by gently heating the saffron threads in a little milk, to tease out the flavor and color without burning it and achieve the maximum effect and flavor dispersal. In perfume, it is a note that is often used to lend an air of Oriental mystery and depth. Ben Gorham of Byredo, working with perfumer Jerome Epinette, has introduced a perfume that honors this spice that is holy to Hindus and symbolizes India, the country he was raised in.

Black Saffron is the third Byredo scent that I have had the pleasure of reviewing, and it continues to weave the spell started by Seven Veils and Bullion, also by Jerome Epinette. These perfumes tell tales of lands far away, of spice markets, seraglios, deserts, ancient villages, and precious goods. Black Saffron is no exception, because as soon as I put it on I am again transported across the waters to a place I have only imagined.

Lord Vishnu

Opening with a sweet, vibrant citrus, Black Saffron quickly simmers into a beautiful, heady blend, with bursts of silvery violet and dewy rose popping out between the wisps of saffron. The saffron here is subtle – I pulled out my jar of spice to compare – but definitely present. The spice has a bitterness that has been tempered in the perfume, leaving the creamy and indescribable saffron heart. A surprising, soft leather note hovers at the edges of the composition, giving the perfume an interestingly human touch, like your hands might smell at the end of a savory feast you have eaten with fingers that have been rinsed with a bit of rosewater.

As a preliminary to my review, I wore Black Saffron without any thoughts as to what was in it, or trying to imagine what I would say about it, just put it on and went about my day like I normally would. I have to say that the perfume and I got along like we had been companions for a long time, the kind that can carry on an interesting conversation, but also know when to just be quiet with each other. I can see adding it to my wish list, and maybe edging it in above a few other perfumes on that list. It is definitely unisex, with fairly close sillage and good longevity.

Notes per Byredo:

Top: Pomelo, Saffron, Juniper Berry
Heart: Black Violet, Accord Cuir, Cristal Rose
Base: Blond Woods, Raspberry, Vetiver

I obtained my sample from the great folks at the San Francisco Barney’s NY, who also graciously provided a second sample to give away. Let us know in the comments if you have experience with saffron, in cooking or perfume. We will draw one winner on October 19, 2012.

We announce the winners only on site and on our Facebook page, so Like Cafleurebon and use our RSS option…or your dream prize will be just spilled perfume.

  • I love saffron! Heating in milk is definitely the way to go. I love it in tapioca pudding, my ultimate comfort food, along with cinnamon, coriander, and a touch of cardamon. I love Indian food/smells generally and saffron in particular. Sometimes one thread in a mug of hot milk with a touch of vanilla and sugar just transports me in the winter to somewhere…else.
Safran Troublant is one of my all-time favorite perfumes. It’s so easy to wear, comforting and interesting at the same time.

please count me in this great draw! Thanks for the evocative reviews of all the Byredo perfumes–this house is on my must-try list!

  • My closest contact with saffron was me seeing it among spices at World Trade Market but since it wasn’t too expensive I assumed it wasn’t real – and never bought it.

  • I’ve tried Felanilla once, and adored the way the saffron in there sneaks out. A FB is on my wish list. I’d like to try Safran Troublant, and I’d really like to try this Black Saffron. Also like the tip above from mim666 to try it warmed in milk (saffron saffron, not the perfume Black Saffron). Thanks for the draw!

  • Safran Troublaint is also one of my favorite fragrances. It’s such a wonderful perfume. The saffron provides a radiant quality that goes so well with the comfort of the vanilla.

Black Saffron sounds very interesting. Would love to try.

  • Saffron I use a lot in making Paella. It brings an ethereal earthy quality to the rice and even though essentially one uses the tiniest but, several threads its influence is unmistakeable. I do like the sound of the warm milk with other spices as one reader has described.

  • I use saffron to flavor my rice all the time and I am dying to make saffron rice pudding. I also use it to color soaps when I make them. I love the way Safran Troublant smells on my skin. I feel like saffron adds a golden, silky quality to everything…..the taste, to me, is heavy and soft like velvet.

  • I’ve wanted to to try this scent!

We make a fish stew that is dramatically better if we put a few strands of saffron in it. Thanks for the draw!

  • I love saffron in perfume. I own one perfume with saffron: Maison Dorin Un aire d’Arabie Rose of Taif.

  • My first experience of saffron was Tahdig, a spectacular Persian dish I was introduced to while dating someone from Iran. I love it in food as well as scent! Thanks for the draw, and the wonderful review.

  • Saffron in perfumery makes the scents very smooth – re: Ange ou Demon as mentioned in a comment above. I used to add this spice to rice meals and cookies. Thx!

  • I used to put saffron in paella and sometimes in baked patatoes. As to perfumery I smell a lot of saffron in Olympic Orchids’ Gujarat.

  • I have saffron EO but I suspect it’s adulterated somewhat as the source was not reliable. I also have Safraleine, which I’ve used in an attempt at a leather scent, not too successfully so far.

  • My first experience with saffron in perfume, was when I smelt Agent Provocateur a few years ago. I don’t usually add saffron to my cooking, but I do love the scent of it.

  • I like the saffron in Agent Provacateur. I have a friend who wears it as her signature scent. She is part Sri Lankan with a curtain of black hair and really rocks the exotic smell of that perfume.

  • Tomate Farcie says:

Love the scent of saffron, in a lot of Morrocan recipes you add the saffron strands to water and flavor the food With the water, tastes and smells divine. I would love to try this!

  • I use saffron in both cooking and perfume. It’s great in everything from sweet to savory dishes. It’s essential in paella and risotto. In India, saffron-flavored ice cream is popular. Although I can’t eat much of it without getting sick, it tastes delicious.

I generally like perfumes that use saffron. It’s common in Arabian-style perfumes. I used saffron in my own fragrance, Gujarat. I’d love to try Byredo’s Black Saffron.

  • While unrelated, here in Ohio there is a company that makes collectable baskets called Longaberger. They actually produced a line of small hand woven baskets representing various herbs & spices, would’t you know there indeed is a Saffron Basket in the collection. Certainly not Fragrance related but an interesting piece of information for collectors.

  • The only perfume with saffron that I think I have ever experienced is Saffron Troublant, and I really liked it very much…it was interesting and not too much spice.
I would love to win this fragrace. I think that it would be a great fragrance for this time of year. Thanks for the draw.
