New Niche Fragrance Review: Parfums Lalun Acqua di Callitris – The Last Gasp of Summer + Artisan Salon Draw

I live in a part of California that does not see much summer until September and October. Even so, my particular neighborhood doesn’t see much summer at all, being trapped between hills and the sea for optimum fog retention. I wear my fall and winter fragrances year-round, pretty much, although I sometimes pretend that summer is here and will throw on something bright and fresh that nearly fails to make itself known on my goosefleshed skin.

Lake Como Summer Day by Jerry Fresia

A few months ago, I was sent samples of skin care products and a perfume by Maggie Mahboubian of Lalun Naturals/Parfums Lalun. I tend to have a lot of samples at any given time, and unfortunately, some get put on the back burner. Since then, I have gotten to know Maggie a bit, smelled some of her other offerings, and played with her skin care products. I unearthed the sample she had sent me and decided to give it a try. I am glad I waited, because it is the perfect scent for right now, when I have a few coveted warm days ahead.

Mimosa by Donald Sultan

Acqua di Callitris is a sunny, beautiful scent that seems nearly unattainable in a natural fragrance.  Callitris is a cypress, which is used in the base of the perfume, and you would think that would put the perfume in a more wintery category.  Instead, the light resinous notes are blended with a selection of citruses and flowers to create a scent that is reminiscent of a garden where the evergreens along the edges give off their scent in the heat of day. The top notes are uplifting, like a cool drink of lavender lemonade that you bring out to that pretty garden with you.  I would have thought there was some honey here, but it is the natural mimosa and linden aromas in the heart that are creating that illusion. Either that, or my fictional garden fantasies have convinced me that the beehive is not too far away. The piney drydown has a slightly salty quality, like the way my skin can smell after a day outside. My skin never smells this pretty on its own, and this perfume could well be a staple in my summer perfume rotation.

Maggie and Parfums Lalun will be participating in the LA Artisan Fragrance Salon on September 23rd, along with a fantastic roster of West Coast perfumers. As further incentive to check it out, your ticket also gets you into the Artisan Chocolate Salon. What could be better than a day of perfume and chocolate?

Notes per Parfums Lalun :

  • Here in Colorado it has been the last few storms blowing through, bringing rain lower down but dusting the mountains with snow. That rain with the chilled scent of snow is a pretty good indicator that summer is ending for us.

  • I’ve been spritzing Lanvin Oxygene like it’s going out of style. Time to switch bring the winter goodies out soon…

  • Here in South GA we don’t see the cold until later in October, sometimes November. Will continue to wear L’Humaniste & Santalum Slivers for a bit longer. Thanks for the draw!

  • Janet in California says:

I am ready for Indian summer. It has been chilly in Santa Cruz for the last few weeks. I have been enjoying Fire Island when it is warm.

  • My favorites for late summer are Hermes Un Jarden Apres la Mousson and Un jardin en Mediteranee. Oh for the very hot days I splash on large amounts of 4711. Aqua de Calitris sounds wonderful. I love the scent of Cypress in the heat.

  • On the other side of the world, in Australia, I’m going into Spring and Summer now, but earlier this year, in late March was when the weather began to change and brought with it some cooling winds. I wear Gucci Envy Me 2 during this change of season as it has the green freshness of Summer and a thick muskiness that suits Autumn.

    Thanks for the draw!

  • We just dropped 25 degrees in the last 5 hours (seriously). A cold, driving rain pushed temps down in the 50s, making me glad for the duvet! Yesterday we were sleeping under just a sheet. Welcome to September in Illinois!!!

This is the weather where I wear something sparkly in the midday, like Agraria Bitter Orange, then something warming in the evening, like vintage Ubar. Summer’s last gasp could be a month away – or it could be tomorrow!

    xoA

  • My last gasp of summer fragrance is Un Coeur en Mai. I’m almost out of my decant. Love it so much! Sometimes I layer it with a spritz of Chamade.

    Thanks for the generous draw!

  • Haha I knew someone would say the same: L’artisan L’eau de Ete along with IUNX Eau Baptiste… smells of summer for me =)

  • Still warm in Montreal but temperatures are going down this week.
I’m wearing Vacances Liquides and Vittoria Apuana almost every day. I love the salty aspect that lingers after a few hours of application

the summer is ending here with the last of a blend of mandarin/basil/geranium essential oils i blended myself… although someone gave me a small vial of 4711 i am splashing here and there.

jasmine tincture from her own garden?! mouthwatering!

    thanks for another wonderful draw!

  • Here in Florida, the heat is still very much summer…
    I love wearing Attrape Coeur!
    Thanks for the draw!

  • The weather is just beginning to turn here on the east coast. I received a sample of Ineke’s Hothouse Flower and I’ve worn it the last 2 days in an effort to hang on to summer.

  • Oh, how wonderful this sounds. My end of summer favorite is Nicolai’s Vie de Chateau; it has the hay harvest and an edge of bonfire smoke.

  • Blue cypress and Jasmine enfleurage??? I am so excited to read these notes side by side! Jasmine enfleurage is simply the most satisfying scent I can think of. It just so happens that the answer to your question is Jasmine enfleurage pomade. It takes off with the heat of the skin and makes parting with the summer less painful. *sigh*

  • god, this sounds nice — particularly t e base!)

i am recently (in 100 + heat) reaching most for lutens’ miel de bois and find it very satisfying and lovely.

  • My last gasp of summer fragrance is MH Coeur d’Ete. I absolutely adore this one from spring straight through late summer. Thanks for the draw!

  • Thank you Tama for such a lovely review and introduction to my work. It is hotter than a pepper sprout (to quote Johnny Cash) here in LA where Summer plans to stay for a while. Off to prepare for the Salon where I hope to meet local Cafleurbon readers!

  • This sounds so lovely. I have been using up the last of my bottle of Chanel #19 Poudre…beautiful but fleeting, like summer. Please enter me and thanks for the draw.

  • Well, it was quite cold summer here and it’s behind now. But a couple of months ago I liked to use Divine by Divine. Thanks for the draw! =)

  • My last gasp of summer fragrance is usualy the same I use to conmemorate the arrival of the spring: Carillon pour un Ange, by Andy Tauer.
    Thank you for the draw!

  • I started wearing Ramon Monegal’s Impossible Iris in mid August, just as the nights started getting colder. It is perfect, easy-going and sophisticated, a delicate fragrance that makes me feel light and serene.

  • On these hot, hot days in the San Fernando Valley, I reach for a refreshing splash from an old bottle of Annick Goutal’s Eau du Ciel. It harkens back to a sweet, memory of the riviera with an azure sky and a beautiful luxurious sun that was warm…but not sizzling!

  • I’m in VA, and while it’s cool today, I’ve been here long enough to know that we’ll get another blast of summer before all is said and done.

I’ve just gotten my hands on L’Artisan Seville l’Aube and I’m enjoying it. I’m looking forward to a sniff of SL Une Voix Noire.

  • Tama, I can almost smell this fragrance from your description. Thank you.

Knowing Maggie’s passion and intelligence, I keep imagining how lovely this will be on the skin.

Carthusia-IO CAPRI-I love the fig in the summer.

  • Last gasp of summer scent… Maybe now Etrog oy de cologne! And TDC Bergamote, L’artisan The pour une ete (spelling?)

  • Last gasp of summer perfume…. Katharina by Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab. So perfect for hot days and cool evenings!

  • Last gasp of summer; a discontinued fragrance “Hayloft”, by Jean LaSalle from the 1940’s. Smells like warm, sweet hay.

  • My last gasp of summer perfume? It’s hard for me to choose between Still Life by Olfactive Studio and Honoré’s Trip by Honoré de Prés. I don’t know…but maybe Honoré’s Trip.

  • Been wearing all of Olfactive Studio’s creations, Lumiere Blanche a favorite. We still have temps in the high 90’s for a while yet. Thanks for the draw.
