New Niche Fragrance Review Roxana Illuminated Perfume “Impromptu”-Sweetly Scented Serendipity + In The Moment Draw

Impromptu by Greg Spalenka

The Oxford Illustrated Dictionary defines impromptu simply as: extempore (done “in the moment”, without any preparation) or unrehearsed. This perfume truly lives up to its name. Created on the spur of the moment, while cleaning her drafting table off to do some painting, Roxana Villa combined a series of notes, essences and accords to create something truly beautiful. She has always been creative. She began as a visual artist, did freelance editorial illustration, and taught art. Her perfume journey began after smelling an essential oil (juniperus virginiana) or eastern cedar before entering a sweat lodge. The power scent had to propel her spirit into a primordial forest and cause a physiological change made her realize that natural aromatherapy and a more holistic approach were to define her path forward.

Roxana Villa

Created (as it was) from a veritable plethora of already mixed perfumed chords, musk experiments and woody spicy blends and then having even more things added to it afterwards, attempting to dissect the notes in Impromptu would be like looking at individual threads in a fine Persian antique hand-woven rug. If you try to look too hard at what makes it so beautiful, you will miss the whole picture…and how stunning it actually is. What makes this scent even more jaw-dropping is that it has the feel of leather, but absolutely no animal ingredients were included.  I can attempt to describe the beauty of this perfume but will try to do so without mentioning too many individual notes and go more with feelings and associations evoked from each successive sniff. The perfumer also tried to create something that did not include costly (and ubiquitous) ingredients such as orange blossom, jasmine, rose, orris or oud. This would be akin to creating a painting without utilizing any primary colors, yet this artist has created something dark and beautiful without it feeling muddled or oppressive.

An opening of obviously woody and spicy accords definitely prevails. As the perfumer was once carried away to a forest primeval, I am wafted away to a deep and thick forest of dark ancient wood and heady spices. Heavy aromatic branches exude their balsamic aromas to mix with the slightly earthy accords of loam and decaying vegetation (not the rotten “stinky” kind but the type that returns to the earth thick and black and creates new life). The spiciness here is so well-rounded it creates warmth, despite your shadowy surroundings, and makes you feel safe and truly at one with Nature. The presence of a sharp and dry floral aroma adds a subtle sweetness while reinforcing its elegance.

Khal Drogo as portrayed by Jason Momoa

Here, the addition of the somewhat smoky and dry flower takes the entire composition towards its ultimate sweet leathery finish, again without any animal derived components! It is here that I think of the love between Khal Drogo (warrior king of the Dothraki horsemen) and Daenerys Targaryen (the last of her royal line and the Mother of Dragons) from television series “Game of Thrones” (based on the book series “A Song of Fire & Ice”). As Khal Drogo’s love turned Daenerys from a simple spoiled princess and pawn of her plotting brother and brought out her inner warrior woman; this perfume successfully blends the softer passion of the earthy and feminine with the fiery ferocity of the masculine while tempering his brutish side and simultaneously strengthening hers. Hints of fresh herbs and greens along with a sweet, almost fuzzy, softness continue to balance the heavier bracken and compost-like scents and make us see even the basest of things have their beauty.

Musing the Goddess by Greg Spalenka

Images of arid desert flowers, sage smoldering, leather shields and horse tack notwithstanding, Impromptu manages to capture something many have tried to do: a scent sexy and virile enough for a man to wear that also has a soft beauty and gentle sweetness throughout, without making any woman wearing it feel too manly. The dry down maintains the depth and breadth of the opening, and keeps alive the beauty in its heart, as it settles into a honeyed embrace of muskiness, exotic elements and memories of sensual caresses. It does all of this with 100% natural essences in a concentration at or above pure perfume (extract) levels of 30% fragrance. The juice itself, in the vial, is thick and a deep and gorgeous golden brown color. Its price point (for what it is and how long it lasts) is rather pleasing too.

This perfume was my very first Roxana Illuminated Perfume experience and I look forward to many, many more. The sillage is very good (one single dab from the sample was detectable from across the room) and the longevity is incredible. Remember too folks, this is powerful stuff and a little dab’ll do you! This perfume (due to its very nature) is limited to only ten ounces. When that is gone, it’s gone. The perfumer has confided in me that she may try and recreate this, but to replicate something as inspired and “impromptu” as this would be exceedingly difficult.

  • ok, so maybe this isn’t quite what you meant by “in the moment” but i remember as a child my first time in a funeral home… i was nervous and when the director came over to us to ask if he could help– my impulse was to do what my mom always did when people asked if they could help: i immediately piped up and said, “oh no thanks, we’re just looking.”

  • This sounds lovely, and strange in a very good way. One memorable time when i was especially “in the moment” was when I met my husband, in -person, for the first time, in the airport in Madrid. I´ll never forget that! Thanks for the draw.

  • my ‘in the moment’: when I first saw the man who would occupy my soul for the next 10 years. One of the most awful – and awe-full – moments of my life.

    xoA

  • I think I cannot reveal my “in the moment” moment here so I will say instead that I find chaparral very interesting for quite some time now. “To bee” is another one that I am really curious about and of course “Impromptu”. Thanks for the draw

  • I was on the moment when I first heard Jim Morrison sing
Btw I love Greenwich but impromptu is fascinating

  • I love the scent of honey so To Bee sounds delicious.
Impromptu also sounds wonderful, especially with the visual of Kahl Drogo!

  • Roxana is one of my favorite perfumers! Of the perfumes I’ve tried from her, Page 47 is my favorite. Thanks so much for the draw!

  • Impromptu sounds most interesting to me, but Hedera Helix and Gracing the Dawn also sound like they would appeal to my sensibilities. Thank you for the draw!

  • I am most in the moment when I’ve lost myself in creating art or poems. Or working with my patients or my clients. Thank you for the drawing.

  • I’m a musician, and love the feeling of a phrase coming together after practise — letting myself go, letting the reflexes take over.

I’m also in the moment when I am running. I love the feeling of my body working like a machine. It helps my brain get really lucid!

  • This may sound strange, but I was usually in the moment when I ran my aussie in agility. She was very fast and quick on the non-verbal communication. She was driving me as much as I was driving her.

    Lovely fragrance!

  • Ok, this will be laborious on the iPad which wants to change all my words but here goes. Great review John. I .ove the allusion of dissecting the perfumes notes to studying the threads of a Persian rug.

I am a huge fan of Roxana’s perfumes and have sampled many. Of course I do have my favorites. Gracing The Dawn is stunningly beautiful. Green witch transports me to a magical place. Sierra Gold is a favorite cozy Christmas scent for me. And I carry a magic little vial of solid Vera on my bi-monthly flights between Singapore and Texas. (24 hours in economy, I need a magic potion.)

Her presentations are exquisite. Even samples come beautifully presented. And every so often she comes out with little view books when she does a new perfume. They are a joy to look at.

Although i don’t just wear natural perfumes, when I put on one of Roxana’s perfumes they impart such a feeling of well being, as if all the love and care is somehow transmitted through the liquid. I can’t wait to try Impromptu. And no, I don’t work for her! Just a fan.

  • Wow, this sounds amazing. I am in the moment when I’m riding or working with my horse. I have to be, or he’ll have the upper hand (hoof?)!

  • Roxana’s perfumes are so amazing and have each a very strong personality. My personal favourite is Greenwitch…a sea chypre not for the faint hearted!
Impromptu seems to fit right in her other superb creations…
    Thank you for the draw..

  • Saying I love you for the first time to my husband!! That was really impromtu for me!!
Thank you for the draw, would love to try this unique creation!

  • Being in the moment is hard for me. Part of my perfume rediscovery was a conscious effort to be aware of my surroundings at any given time by concentrating on my five senses. This perfume sounds wonderful as do many others of hers.

  • I don’t have an ‘in the moment story’ for you but I have a favorite Illiminated scent. I love Gracing the Dawn. Greenwitch and Cimbalom are right behind it. I would love to try Impromptu.

  • I’m a big day-dreamer, and the moments I love the most are those solitary times when I can lie back and reflect on my life and examine what needs to be done or what needs to change. I’m a girl that sometimes acts on impulse, leaving my life is slight disarray, so I guess I could describe my impulsive pursuits as being “in the moment”, either that or my quiet day to day reflections could also be considered as being “in the moment”.

This fragrance sounds glorious. Thanks for the draw and the article!

  • What a lovely, thoughtful review! I love Roxana’s perfumes and every one I have worn is a favorite… today it is Vera.

  • Great job John! My in the moment “moment”, when I realized that it is the perfect place to be always;)

  • I have never tried any of Roxanna’s perfumes…Impromptu sounds lovely and I’d like to try it.
The article is fascinating and the images are interesting and beautiful.

  • I’m “in the moment” anytime I’m out in nature. Yosemite especially makes me forget all else, while I take in the hugeness and beauty of the place, the smells, and the feel of the air. I have never tried any of Roxana’s perfumes, but this one sounds made for me…

  • I have To Bee and it is a memorable scent and after reading Cynthia’s reply I am inspired to try Vera too. Impromptu sounds quite intriguing. Thanks for the lovely draw!

  • Lovely, John.

I guess the first time I was really in the moment was when I and a few friends were impromptu guests at Swan Song records to meet the remaining members of Led Zeppelin in 1982. I was 17. It was magical and they were gentleman.

  • You put a picture of Momoa in the review and then expect me to tear my eyes away to read it??

Nice review – I don’t need to be in the draw, just wanted to say hello.

  • Many years ago, with friends, I was lucky to summer on a tiny island in between Canada and the mainland of Michigan. On our last night I choose to spend my time alone outside on the hammock. I listened to the chatter and laughter of cards, and the hours passed. The stars seemed so close. For hours I just hung there gently swinging. Hypnotized with twinkling of stars, satellites passed. I thought this is how I want to die, exposed to the elements and sky. I began to see light on the horizon and thought I was dreaming. How else could the sky be getting lighter? Dawn was four hours away. Suddenly I realized the show had not even begun. I jumped up yelling for the house to come down.

    Q

  • Terrestre is a fovourite of mine as I love it’s earthy nature. I find it easy to be in the moment when I wear this fragrance as it is grounding and lasts really well on my skin. Impromptu sounds exquisite.

  • I have three samples of Roxana’s solids and my favorite is Aurora: the jasmine and spice in there appeal to me so much! They seem to be a great way to “train” my nose, since they are so subtle (to me)!
I’d also certainly be interested in trying Aumbre, cause I love everything ambery! And Cimbalom, for some more jasmine!
But any of Roxana’s perfumes is surely a most refined treat! This stuff do put me in the Now! 🙂

  • never been able to try any and, by description only, Aumbre sounds like the one I would like
    Impromptu sounds interesting, too

  • Roxana`s To Bee is an amazing journey into a hive…a study o,n bees and honey…pure deacdence…
Impromptu seems just as good….Cant wait to try it!!

  • i love roxanna’s perfumes — they are very very special, since she often makes many of the ingredients herself.
also, the presentations are absolutely stunning
i own and cherish a bottle of her rosa, which is probably my very favorite rose perfume.
other favorites are chaparral (which smells like, well, chaparral) and sierra.

this new one sounds as wonderful as her others, and i would love to try it.

  • When I think of having been in the moment, I think of being out in nature just taking in the world, very in the now–on my last camping trip I went swimming in a lake on a sunny day, and spent hours and hours diving underwater, looking at the sunlight playing in the lily pad patches, the bubbles sparkling, the branches casting shadows, just….sigh….so peaceful I had no idea how much time was passing… or else expressing myself creatively through drawing or painting (occasionally other crafts). I am a little too anxious to really be in the moment with other people.

I have been meaning to check out her perfumes for a while, I like the crossover with visual arts too! To Bee looks awesome! As does Aurora, Chaparral, Vespertina…. I like the sound of Impromtu a lot. Y’all had me at Jason Momoa.

  • What a lovely review, John! Impromptu sounds wonderful.

I bookmarked her site, everything looks so tempting! I will be going back for samples soon. It’s hard to narrow down, but I think Aumbre sounds the most me.

  • I have tried some of Roxana’s perfumes and loved them all, but Q and Chaparral were twos of my favourites – I love all smoky and woody smells.
Great review, thanks for the chance to win!

  • LOVE Roxana’s perfumes. They are truly stunning works of art. My favorite’s are Cimbalom,Too Bee, GreenWitch, Page 47 and her soon to be released Jasmine Noir. Would love to try her new Impromptu. Love the comment about being able to smell it across the room. My “in the moment” when I am at work. I work in a larger ER and the instances when I am truly saving a life I am defiantly in the moment.

  • Roxana is one of the best perfume what I think. I put this on and still can smell it 10 hours later. It can be worn by a female or a male. I also have the liquid and it is equally beautiful and enchanting. This is one of my favorties that I hope will be made forever.
