Chandler Burr On The Record: The OpenSky.Com Untitled Project

Chandler  Burr the Curator of the Department of Olfactory Art at New York's Museum of Art and Design has partnered with ecommerce site OpenSky.com for the Untitled project. EIC Michelyn Camen has all the details in her post here. I contacted Mr. Burr with three questions I had about the project and he was kind enough to get back to me.

Mark Behnke: You are doing Seasons; how many episodes in a season and will they be tied together by any theme?

Chandler Burr: There’ll be 12 episodes a season. Each season will start on June 1, which is when S01E01 is coming out.

MB: Will the cost per Episode be the constant and the volume inside be the variable or will the volume stay constant and the price fluctuate?

CB: The volume will always be 50ml and the price will be whatever the brand and we decide. Remember that once we do the Reveal at the end of each month, the scent will be permanently for sale under The Untitled Series on opensky.com in its traditional packaging, so we don’t want to vary from that price in any substantive way, though we may do a bit of disguising by changing it by a few dollars.

MB: How difficult was it to get the perfume companies to buy into this, especially the one who rely on the peripherals to attract customers?

CB: In some cases it was difficult, a bit unnerving. In the case of S01E01 it’s a person who is by nature a risk taker and a great lover of art, and when I sent my email requesting one of their works of art for the series, they replied in 24 hours. Extraordinary, but not for this person, who has some of the biggest balls and one of the most creative, fearless minds in the industry.

My thanks to Chandler Burr for helping shed a little more light on this very interesting project which gets underway this Friday. As to the identity of the perfumer my guess has the initials of BD. Michelyn guesses A.G.  Who do you think the perfumer /artist for the inaugral scent is?
