Mezel Parfums Menthe Enivrante (Julie Massé and Jérôme di Marino) 2024 + A Unique and Unexpected Giveaway

Traditionally, with all its resolutions and forward thinking, January is a month for reinvention. And I’m well aware that it’s a bit of a clumsy and inelegant segue to apply that same resolute thinking to perfumery, but for a lot of smaller scale, niche brands, reinventing – or at least approaching the form differently – is what creates products that stand out; so I’m rolling with it. Take Mezel Parfums, a Franco-Moroccan brand launched in 2024, for instance. Their five fragrances all do something unique and unexpected, breathing life into concepts we thought we already knew.

Cuir de Pasteque is an ever-wet floral that somehow stays permanently breathy with its astoundingly natural smelling watermelon facets (a finalist in The Fragrance Foundation Awards France 2025). Their Cafe Defendu combines cannabis with ‘three beans’ (coffee, tonka and cacao) to make a wood fragrance that feels wonderfully foreign and dusty and their out-and-out gourmand, Datte Opaline, delivers a date accord that should be studied for providing a date’s characteristic sweetness without ever delivering too much body. In essence, each existing ‘genre’ they’ve approached, they’ve managed to manipulate.

Menthe Enivrante by Mezel Parfums

The brand’s amber fragrance, Menthe Enivrante, is inspired by a clandestine royal tradition of serving mint tea infused with ambergris. It’s one that reportedly left their residences smelling incredible and with such decadent origins it allowed the perfumers Julie Massé and Jérôme di Marino to “play around” with overdosing materials like absinthe, the titular Moroccan mint and the mineral amber accord, which was undoubtedly created to represent the multifaceted nature of natural ambergris.

I find mint can be a pretty demanding material to work with. On the one hand its bracing nature and uplift is a super desirable effect, but add too much and it can make even the most beastly compositions just smell like toothpaste. Here though, mint is very much part of the focus of the perfume, so the perfumers have embraced its chaotic nature, pairing it with the addictive, ambery herbal tones of wormwood and somehow making it all smell warm just like mint leaves do when they’re steeping in boiling water. That golden mint smell pervades too, living long into the drydown of Mezel Parfums Menthe Enivrante, creating a sort of a eccentric herbal and fresh amber that still has real molecular weight to it.

Mint and Ambergris

The tension between the cooling, fresh properties of mint and the warmth of the amber dimension is unique, adding a properly inspired twist to a mineral amber perfume. In the wider context of the rest of the brand’s perfumes it’s indicative of their approach, but in isolation it’s a composition that is quite brazen and remarkably evocative of its ostentatious Moroccan mint inspiration.

Notes: absinthe, Moroccan mint, violet leaves, mineral amber, myrrh, benzoin, cypriol, signature musk accord

  • Never thought about mint and ambergris before. Sounds very interesting and can’t wait to try! I am in USA.

  • Oli’s review reminded me of my visit to Morocco a few years ago. It brings back memories of sharing meals with friends, where the mint tea was always part of the tradition. Morocco was beautiful and I’d love to sample these perfumes for more memories of such special times in my life. I live in the US.

  • I would love to be entered in this giveaway. Menthe Enivrante truly sounds like my kind of fragrance. I am especially drawn to the idea of mint being treated in a bold, nuanced way rather than as something sharp or fleeting. The combination of Moroccan mint, absinthe, and mineral amber sounds fresh yet grounded, which is exactly what I look for in a scent. I love fragrances that feel a little unexpected and thoughtfully composed, while still being wearable. This sounds like a beautiful collaboration between Julie Massé and Jérôme di Marino, and I would be so excited to experience Menthe Enivrante on my own skin.

I live in New York, USA. Thank you so much for this generous and unique giveaway.

A fragrance that infused mint tea with ambergris sounds like a unique
idea. I love discovery sets, and this one sounds like another one that I should check out. I live in Maryland USA.

  • I haven’t tried anything Mezel but I am now intrigued. It’s clear the brand is not afraid to take risks and be unique. Cuir de Pasteque is one I would like to try. The watermelon note got my attention. Menthe Envirante has interesting notes as well. I don’t believe I have ever experienced a scent with mint and amber as key notes. I love trying new fragrances. I have great respect for these perfumers creating around their inspirations. I’m in USA

  • I’m familiar with the mint and amber combination from Clandestine Laboratories’ superb Silver. I’d love to find out the differences to Menthe Enivrante, so I would be happy to win the discovery set to Germany, thank you for the draw.

I like in the review that the approach of the brand is that they ‘manipulated’ the genre and that the nature of mint is described as chaotic. That is such a fun attribute and I think it’s rahter befitting. I thought mint is only for hot days but I find the myself reach for a mint tea now in the winter, combining it with one extra ingredient. I live in the EU.

  • Wow, this sounds incredible. Mint is truly a challenging note, I haven’t find any minty herbal fragrance which would last for more than an hour in the heating months of summer. Would love to try, along with other fragrances of this, for me unknown, brand 🙂 I’m from Czechia.

  • I love the idea of a cooling mint scent combined with a warming amber. There really is no note to me more warm and cuddly than amber, and is there anything more refreshing than fresh mint? I grow it in my flowerbed to flavor my ice tea, so I should know! I enjoy how these perfumers bring new combinations of notes together in a way that reflects unique aspects of the country they are made in.
Thank you to Oli for the review and the perfumer for the offer. I’m in the USA.

The idea of mint treated as something warm, ambery, and decadent instead of toothpaste-fresh completely hooked me—especially the image of Moroccan mint steeped until golden and fused with mineral amber. Mezel Parfums sounds fearless in how it bends familiar genres into something tactile and transportive, and Menthe Enivrante feels like the kind of scent that lives in memory as much as on skin. I live in the Bay Area, USA

  • Thanks, Oli, for your review! I know it can be a divisive note, but I happen to LOVE mint, and am always excited to smell a composition that includes it. Menthe Envirante sounds like it combines mint with fantastic notes and materials: mint plus amber is perfection.

  • The unique tension between cooling Moroccan mint and warm mineral amber in Menthe Enivrante intrigues me – it’s a fresh twist on amber fragrances that evokes steeping tea. I also love how Mezel Parfums reinvents genres with bold, natural accords. I live in Poland, EU.

Thanks for the unique and unexpected giveaway feature! Mezel Parfums Menthe Enivrante sounds like a dazzling twist on mint tea ritual — inspired by the tradition of infusing mint tea with precious ambergris, it opens with a bold, herbaceous absinthe spark that immediately draws you in. The Moroccan mint at the heart feels fresh and invigorating, while mineral amber, myrrh, benzoin and a signature musk accord give the base a warm, resinous depth that keeps the brightness grounded and intriguing. I especially loved how the mint and amber interplay feels both crisp and luxurious, as if tradition and modernity were dancing together on the skin. I’d love to try Menthe Enivrante!
    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Mezel Parfums seems intent on thinking outside the box. Several of their fragrances have note combinations that I’ve never encountered before. The watermelon faceted wet floral of Cuir de Pasteque; the cannabis-coffee-cacao combination of Cafe Defenda and the mint and ambergris duo in Menthe Enivrante all sound really unique. I would lobe to try the discovery set. USA

  • “The brand’s amber fragrance, Menthe Enivrante, is inspired by a clandestine royal tradition of serving mint tea infused with ambergris.” That sounds like heady stuff and is fantastic inspiration for a fragrance. Impressive that Massé and Marino managed to make this mint accord smell warm and steaming, and avoided any toothpaste connotations, all while balancing the complexity of both wormwood and amber. So much going on here and I’d love to try it. I’m intrigued by Mezel’s whole lineup, all of which feature compelling points of distinction (especially that watermelon aspect of Cuir de Pasteque).

    I’m in the USA.

  • Not heard of this brand before. I do like a mint note, but I don’t like it too strong. Myrrh and violet are some of my favorites, I’m curious how it plays with the mint. I’d love to try this whole line. USA.

  • Mezel Parfums Menthe Enivrante, sounds amazing… cool and fresh yet warm and ambery.I would love to win this sampler as I would like to try this brand. EU

  • This brand sounds refreshing. I like the idea of a French-Moroccan house that draws inspiration from both the European and North African traditions. Oli describes Menthe Enivrente as a great exploration of the Moroccan tea tradition creating a beautiful interface between cool mint tea and warm amber. Sounds like something that wouldn’t work, but it seemingly does and I’m very intrigued. Would love to smell something from this new house. Marit EU

Amazing review and introduction to a new fragrance house! Firstly that watermelon notes of Cuir de Pasteque intrigues me cause its usually really hard to do right and also i find quite interesting the tension to capture its essence as a moroccan summertime feeling! Sounds truly lovely and playful! On the other hand Datte Opaline and Cafe Defendu, both unique compositions that i am super excited to try. A cannabis coffee that sounds to me quite vibrant with its green facets, being balanced with the warmth and comfort of the intriguing notes of tonka and cacao. A majestic and opulent gourmant with dates is also sth that i would love to try.
What fascinates me mostly from their fragrances is Menthe Enivrante, a fragrance that has a fresh green brightness from mint and absinthe and the warmth of amber, sounds quite unexpected and mesmerizing. A truly interesting and divine inspired blend that evoke the Moroccan culture!
I would love to try this wonderful Morocco inspired discovery set.
Thank you the generous draw. I live in Europe.

The notes in the 5 fragrances in the Mezel Parfums discovery set sound crazy good. I am especially interested in Cafe Defendu with the cannabis and the hree bean notes. Menthe Enivrante also sounds quite interesting with the mint and amber notes. It sounds very refreshing and bracing, but also warm and inviting. This house is definitely creating completely original fragrances.
    I live in the USA.

  • I love a tea fragrance. Mint tea with ambergris and myrrh sounds so intriguing. And I haven’t tried this house yet so that’s another curiosity for me. Cuir de Pasteque also sounds beautiful! Disco sets are so helpful. You get the vibe of the house and get to choose what you’d like a big bottle of. Thank you for the offer! I am in the U.S.

  • The combinations of notes sounds so unusual: Mint and ambergris, Cannabis and the ‘three beans’, and watermelon with florals. And mint that doesn’t smell like toothpaste is always to be beloved.! The uniqueness of the brand’s offerings really sound like they are worth the exploration! I live in the US.

  • You had me on “mint leaves steeping in boiling water” as a simile. Excellent writing about as you said a difficult scent but mint done right can be so amazing and I am a total amber fan. His description of the other scents by this brand are also very intriguing so I may be searching for some of these to try.
