Shop Small Saturday 2025: DSH Perfumes the Essense Studio +Holiday Giveaway

Shop Small Saturday November 29 2025

Over the past 12  years, I have a tradition to promote small, independent perfume boutiques on Small Business Saturday. The idea for our series We Love This Store began with our support for small business owners. This year, I chose to spotlight the 1200 square foot atelier of perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz for our Shop Small Saturday post. She’s an artisan, an olfactive artist, a jewelry designer and visual artist. She is prolific. One of the first perfumes we wrote about, American Beauty, is still in her prodigious collection of 500 + fragrances. Like many other small business owners around the world, Dawn knows each customer by name and there is never any pressure; many are clients who purchase online. Dawn has been awarded a 2019 Art and Olfaction Award for Colorado, her collaboration with American Perfumer©. In an industry of giant fragrance houses and corporations, please #ShopSmall.-Michelyn Camen– Editor-in Chief

2025 has been a year of change for DSH Perfumes.

As an independent perfumer, I have been creating bespoke and niche perfume collections since the 1990s; always with an eye on classical form and what moves me artistically, as well as a finger on the pulse of what my clients are looking for next. Since that time, as DSH Perfumes, I have created hundreds of fragrances for my perfume collection, including home fragrances and aromatherapy preparations, collaborated with museums and had generally released them by partnering with boutiques, as well as through our website, DSHPerfumes.com.

DSH Perfumes Bijoux Beaux Arts

Dawn’s hand made jewelry wall

In 2008 I opened my first DSH Perfumes Essense studio shop to create a space for visitors to come and smell everything I have created, all in one place, and invite them into my creative world in general, which not only included my fragrances, but my visual art and handmade jewelry pieces.

After 17 years in that space, we moved from our studio “shop” (a slightly more formal affair), into our studio “workshop”, which is a much more intimate invitation into the heart of our business.  We also switched to a by appointment only schedule, which has allowed us to focus even more on client services like fragrance consultations, bespoke fragrance design, and private shopping —which fosters an even closer, one on one relationship with each one of our clients.  It also gives us way more flexibility to accommodate each client’s needs for time.

By booking private appointments, it allows us to give truly personalized service to everyone who visits the studio. We get to spend time with each person, get to know what moves them and what gives the most pleasure through their scent preferences. Matching each person to the right fragrance is absolutely the most important thing. I want our clients to feel like the scent they find (or have created) brings a special beauty and sense of quality to their life. I want everyone’s life to feel better with the fragrances they discover in our studio. Happily, the feedback we hear most often is that coming to the studio is unlike anything else they’ve tried while finding a new perfume… that it’s the best experience they have ever had”.

Fragrance Consultation at the DSH Perfumes the Essense Studio

Fragrance Consultation at DSH Perfumes the Essense Studio

At the new DSH Perfumes Essense studio, during our consultations, our clients not only get to try all of our perfume collections (not that anyone has ever samples ALL of them in one go), but if there are some particular notes that they love or have read about and wondered what it smelled like individually, we can show them; and then they see how the pieces come together to create the whole symphony of  the fragrance they have just tested.  It’s an expansive and immersive experience that fills the imagination. I want people to feel like coming into the studio is magical; like they smelled something new, and they learned something new — about fragrance and art, and about themselves, too”. –Dawn Spencer Hurwitz

  • Oh this is so cool! I may have to swing by the studio next time I’m in Colorado.

I try to shop small as much as possible to help funnel money back into my local community and to shop at companies that align with my values.

I haven’t tried any DSH perfumes but Snow Angels in particular sounds incredible!

    Continguous US!

  • What sparked my interest is Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’s profound artistry in perfumery, where she compose scents like visual symphonies—combined with bespoke consultations in her intimate atelier, embodies the magical, immersive world of independent niche perfumery that stands worlds apart from corporate giants. The recent shift to a by-appointment workshop further elevates this, fostering deeply personal scent journeys that reveal not just fragrances, but self-discovery through olfactive art

I #ShopSmall for the local café that knows my order. Small businesses often provide more personal service, distinctive products, and the “feel” of a neighborhood—things that big-box or online mega-retailers usually can’t replicate. These Small Business Saturday indie gems aren’t just businesses—they’re the heartbeat of what makes our town feel like home, from unique scents in a boutique perfumery to handmade crafts echoing gothic vibes. That keeps communities unique and economically alive.

Though I haven’t sampled DSH Perfumes yet—I’d likely lean on to “Become the Shaman” since I’m a sucker for fresh scents.

  • Michelyn Camen’s article on DSH Perfumes reminded me why Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’s creations speak to me so deeply. I’ve treasured Vetyver and Vintage Patchouli for years, and after discovering Tigercat earlier this year, I felt inspired to bring Hanoki and The Voice of Trees into my collection. Each fragrance feels like a living piece of art, carrying its own mood and memory, and together they reflect the way scent can shape my daily life.

For me, Small Business Saturday is about more than making a purchase. It’s about choosing to support creativity and individuality. Adding DSH Perfumes to my collection feels like honoring the artistry behind each bottle and celebrating the vision of an independent maker. My growing collection is a reminder of how meaningful it is to shop small, to connect with the passion of a true artisan, and to carry that spirit with me every time I wear these fragrances. Scented regards from NY, USA.

  • Dawn IS extremely prolific/prodigious. She is always coming up with creative but quality scents. I miss watching her Lives/creating as a groupthink experience. Shopping small means supporting/validating creative efforts of entrepreneurs and strengthening the local economy. USA

  • DSH Perfumes is just what happens when someone dedicates their life and work to the one thing they love. She takes the time to not only create fragrances but help others find their own unique scents. It’s a commendable thing and whenever I find myself in Colorado I will be sure to visit them. Dawn is a prolific perfumer indeed and looking at what she has created I cannot only marble at her skills. I shop small because it’s local, convenient and gives you that community sense you can’t get from a national chain. Small Business Saturday is paramount in the country that we live because they’re what keeps the economy going; the backbone if you will. Dawn has been featured many times here and I have learned a lot about her fragrances and continue to do so. I’m located in the continuous USA.

  • I love supporting small business! I am supporting my community, families, authentic people pursuing their passion and creativity, its wonderful getting handwritten notes and messages about what’s coming up, coupons and thank yous, a variety of samples often for free, there is just no comparison to the experience! I’m fiercely loyal to some of my favorite small perfumers – whose talent looms large in my eyes! DSH, St. Clair, Teone Reinthal/TRNP, Wit & West, Darren Alan, Aftelier, Papillon, Mallo, Ashenfume, Anomolous, Fzotic, Faizal Privee, Hunayn, Di Ser, Marissa Zappas, Dasein, Olympic Orchids, Elkhaldi, Auphorie, Sentire, Priya Means Love, Folkwinds, Prin, Dusita, House of Matriarch, Clandestine Laboratories, For The Scent of It, etc etc! A favorite DSH is Pandora and the Voice of Trees. There are some violet ones I want to get next!
I am located in California. Thank you for the generosity of the giveaway and coupon!

oh my gosh, this is SO cool! i literally live 20 mins. away from this studio & had no idea! i am definitely going to check this out, now! i love how the owner knows all her customer’s names & likes a one on one, intimate approach to helping & displaying her fragrances for each customer- that is so cool & personal. i love how she makes many things- such a beautiful thing to be able to be artistic in many forms! i shop small because these small businesses are what makes up our communities- to myself, putting more money into the pockets of big corporation is handing money over to corruption. i know that is political, so i will not even scratch the surface there, but i will say that. giving money to small businesses helps our communities to flourish & thrive & these owners put literally everything they have into their businesses- it’s so personal, just like dawn’s & actually means something! i have never tried any of her fragrances, but, now that i know she is my neighbor- i am most definitely calling to see if i can make an appt! i am in the contiguous united states! :). colorado, actually! yay! thank you for the reviews & items for the giveaway!

  • I have tried several of DSH’s scents and find her approach very interesting. I love that she does consultations at the shop; ever since hearing that Disneyland had a bespoke perfume shop when it opened way back in the day, the idea of having custom scents mixed for me is fabulous. Second best: having access to samplers or sets of collections by perfumers who hold to high end ideals and mixes. This is especially important when it’s a small business: Small Business Saturday is crucial to keeping our niche producers in production so I try to support small businesses whenever I can, year round. I live in the USA.

  • What really caught my attention about DSH Perfumes the Essense Studio is the shift to that more intimate, appointment-only workshop vibe. The idea of sitting with Dawn’s work, having time to smell individual notes and then see how they come together in a finished perfume sounds like an actual experience, not just a quick spray and rush out. I like the focus on matching each person to the right scent instead of just pushing whatever is new.

I #shopsmall because I’d rather support people who know their customers by name and pour themselves into what they make, instead of faceless corporate launches that all feel the same. Small Business Saturday is a good reminder to put my money toward artists and independents who actually care if you love what you take home.

My favorite DSH perfume is Café Noir, that rich, smooth coffee with spice that hooked me right away.

I live in the contiguous USA.

  • I really appreciate the recognition of “small business Saturday” in the start of the holiday shopping season. Locally, I have some artisan candle/soap and handmade jewelry makers I always support and send others to as well. It’s also a great opportunity for trying new things so I’m glad to see Dawn offering a holiday discovery set. I’ve tried quite a few of Dawn’s fragrances. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but I do like her oud series. MD, USA

  • I know where I am going if I ever get to Boulder. I have family is Colorado, I’ll have to see how close they live. Obviously she is an expert on Colorado after winning the fragrance award for Colorado. Dawn is one busy lady!! Going straight to her website, thanks for the heads up on her sale. I didn’t get out to shop small, but did some online orders (How could I not as the sales were so nice). USA.

  • I just wish there were more ways to smell all these scents. Love the idea of supporting small businesses, the main reason is because my wife owns a small business. She had great support from her customers mostly on black Friday this year, so thankful for everyone that continues to support small business all year long! Arkansas, USA

What sparked my interest in DSH Perfumes the Essense Studio is how deeply Dawn Spencer Hurwitz blends art, intimacy, and imagination into her work, even from afar. I’ve never visited the studio, but I value supporting indie fragrance houses, and the several scents of Dawn’s that I’ve smelled have been spectacular. I #ShopSmall because independent creators bring heart, originality, and real connection to the world, and Small Business Saturday is my reminder to uplift the artists who keep fragrance a living craft. I live in the Bay Area, USA

i love the whole essence of this woman & her fragrance business! i love how personal it sounds that she tries to be with all of her customer’s & i love how she applies her artistic abilities in many different ways, including jewelry too! she has a beautiful & extensive collection of some truly beautiful fragrances it looks like from her website & i had never heard of this brand before, but, so glad that this review has brought it to my attention. shopping small business is so important to me- i love being able to funnel money back into our community & the way small business feels so much more personal. i live in the united states.

  • What a cool idea to have her visual art alongside her olfactory art, all in one space. I still haven’t managed to try any Dawn Spencer Horowitz, but would love to. I am in the US.

  • What a beautiful studio and I really enjoyed this article about the essence studio and Dawn’s shop. Its hard to believe Dawn Spencer Hurwitz has been making perfume since the 90s!!!
I shop small to support my local community mom and pop stores. So many barely got through the pandemic and with the large chains and Amazon, they are so important.
There are so many perfumes by DSH, but Become the Shaman and Colorado are my favorites.

  • cielitolindo717 says:

DSH/Dawn’s creative, prolific, and all-natural work has been on my radar for a long time and I am so thrilled to learn that she has her studio in Boulder, since I occasionally visit family there. I #shopsmall particularly with my favorite independent perfumers as a show of support for their art and unique contributions, and because they cater to my tastes more than most mass-marketed fragrances, but I have yet to sample Dawn’s scents! I would be super excited to receive Dawn’s Holiday Collection (December and Snow Angels are on my must-try list). CONUS based. Thank you!

  • I love everything DSH does and I am in awe of her talent (and I had no idea she is also a jewelry designer and artisan). I’ve head an interview with her on a podcast and she talked about her journey and her move from one space to another. This new studio referenced in this piece does indeed seem like a magical space and I hope to visit it one day.

I try to #shopsmall whenever I can whether that is supporting local artisans from my home state of Tennessee, or shopping directly from my favorite independent fragrance shop in Atlanta (Indiehouse Fragrances – go there, it is amazing). In this era of the big box and instant gratification it means a lot to save up and go in person to find the treasure I want knowing that I am supporting a small business. For Small Business Saturday I bought a gift from my favorite Etsy shop. SSS is just a reminder for to think about the power of people to make change.

    I live in the USA.

What I wouldn’t give to spend an hour or two in the Essense Studio! It really is a testament to Dawn’s creative genius. I love Dawn’s fragrance called Cathedral, which was an early holiday offering.
I love to give support to independent perfumers who create from their hearts and passions, not from a corporate agenda. I am trying my best to completely get away from big business.
    I live in the USA.

  • I like supporting small businesses, especially local ones, where you can find more unique and personal items, and help keep my neighborhood vibrant and interesting. I splurged and bought quite a few of DSH samples and enjoyed each of them. I’m always looking for scents that can bring back happy holiday memories, so I’m sure that at least one in Dawn’s pack!

  • Thanks for the wonderful Shop Small Saturday post. I like being able to connect with artisans this time of year; each purchase from a small business makes a meaningful impact and you can have the type of direct conversation that never happens with a large brand.

DSH is a great example. I’ve tried and enjoyed lots of Dawn’s work, but I haven’t had a chance to visit the Essence Studio, which sounds like a true hobbyist destination. And like Michelyn said, Dawn really is attentive to online customers too; I asked a few questions recently and she sent a detailed and thoughtful response. I’m sure her new appointment-based approach is working perfectly and makes navigating her vast catalogue easier. I’m really intrigued by the learning aspect: “if there are some particular notes that they love or have read about and wondered what it smelled like individually, we can show them; and then they see how the pieces come together to create the whole symphony of the fragrance they have just tested.” Very cool.

I’m in the contiguous USA and my recent DSH favorite is Ambre Tibet.

Thanks for the inspiring feature! The DSH Perfumes “The Essense Studio” holiday collection spotlight and the “Shop Small Saturday 2025” event feel like an invitation to rediscover what makes niche perfumery so special — craft, heart, and character.

The idea of a curated holiday set — with familiar favorites and perhaps a few surprises — evokes the warmth of gathering for festive tradition with loved ones: each fragrance becomes a subtle note in a shared story. I especially love that DSH balances artistry and authenticity, offering scents that feel personal, distinctive, and wearable rather than generic.

I’d be thrilled to explore their offerings and maybe find a signature scent that speaks quietly but memorably. I’d love to win (or try) something from The Essense Studio!

I love Serval and Oilettes des Rouges (hope I got that right)
    Cheers from WI, USA
