This is your clarion call to get your nose on Anjali Perfumes, if you have not already had the pleasure. A dear friend is obsessed with the milky tuberose masterpiece Monsoon Madness, and I’m partial to both the smooth leather of Tiger Bright and the tart green beauty of Under the Mango Tree (I have yet to meet a mango perfume I dislike and this one is really fresh and unusual in the best way). The entire Anjali Perfumes line is full of beautiful creations but today I will be focusing on Iconic Island, so named for Bainbridge Island, the stunning city and island perfumer Anjali Vandemark now calls home.

Anjali Perfumes Iconic Island review

I don’t know about you, but I really don’t like to smell like a fir tree unless it’s the holiday season. Most of the time, forestal scents lean heavy on the pine. I’m also not a huge fan of lavender in perfumes–blasphemy, I know! Somehow Vandemark has brilliantly put all of these notes into a perfume that I completely adore. It really does feel like I’m walking through a beautiful forest, like the fresh greenery and the cool tree shade is surrounding me. It’s a perfume that can make me feel ten degrees cooler just by wearing it. It’s perfect for warm weather, but also shines in the slightly cooler fall.

Anjali Perfumes Iconic Island opens with a bright spark of what smells like fir mixed with fresh cut grass to my nose, expertly blended with lavender and grapefruit to provide a refreshing experience immediately. Later on, floral mid-notes of violet and rose combine with the cooler, herbal notes of juniper berry and fir balsam. The drydown is a woody musk, as if you’ve come through the forest, smelled the greenery, and have now gotten to the tree itself. The beautiful cedar note seemed to spin me right back around to the fir–a clever callback that extends the entire experience.

Vandemark was born and raised in India and her childhood there was full of fragrance, from jasmine flowers to Mysore sandalwood and tree resins. This scented background has informed her current passion for creating unique perfumes that combine her cultural heritage with what she has learned of the olfactive arts as a self-taught perfumer. In fact, Iconic Island came into existence when she created it as part of an art exhibit on the island hosted by JG Art Gallery where local artists provided their interpretations of “Iconic Bainbridge.”

As Vandemark described it in her own words: “Majestic forests, streams, ravines, meadows, wetlands, and shoreline—the island’s varied landscape is a treasure. This composition takes you on a scented journey to the Pacific Northwest; to the cool, fresh, and green elements of the Evergreen State.” She writes about how awed she was when the ferry first took her to the island, and how “even today, every season on the island fills me with wonder—the open fields, the ravines, the grand forest, and the wildlife…”.

Vandemark never thought she’d live in the Pacific Northwest, like the heroine of her favorite TV show Grey’s Anatomy, and yet now she calls it home. As her perfumes reflect, life has taken her on quite the journey. (For the record, I think Iconic Island is a perfume that both Meredith Grey and Christina Yang would wear; a cool twist on a forest scent for our favorite dark and twisty protagonists.)

It is truly so special when a perfumer through their craft can transport you someplace you would never know otherwise. I’ve never been to Bainbridge Island, but this perfume makes me want to book a plane ticket and take the ferry there immediately!

Main Notes: Lavender, Fresh Cut Grass, Fir Balsam, Atlas Cedarwood

  • Being an indian American I’ve been so drawn to this house, and more so the story behind the perfumer’s inspiration. I also love green, earthy, natural scents and everything about this bottle is calling to me! I live in NY

I enjoyed reading Mimian’s review of Iconic Island. I like forest themed fragrances, and this one seems to be unique and well blended. Also, I like that this one can be worn in the fall. I live in Maryland USA.

  • A scent that showcases the dramatic natural landscapes of the Pacific Northwest and more specifically, Bainbridge Island and its varied landscapes. This scent highlights forestal notes that often are seasonal leaning. In Iconic Island, are well crafted and blended with lavender, rose, herbal notes of juniper berry, woody cedar to create a scent that is cool, fresh, green yet warm as well. And a scent that can be worn year-round.

  • Fantastic review of one of my favorite perfumes by Anjali Vandemark! Mimian highlighted the qualities of Iconic Island and the way Anjali uses her reverence of place as inspiration for her artistry. Also appreciate Mimian shares appreciation for my other two loves from this house: Monsoon Madness and especially Under the Mango Tree. Hoping many others will be moved to try these gorgeous perfumes.

  • what a gorgeous review— the words transported me straight to bainbridge island right alongside the perfume. i love how you captured the cool, refreshing forestal quality without it ever leaning too “holiday pine.” the way you described the journey from the bright fir-and-grass opening to the cedarwood drydown makes iconic island sound like a living landscape in a bottle. i also really appreciated the background on Anjali Vandemark—it’s so inspiring to see how her heritage and her home in the pacific come together in her creations. now i definitely feel like i need to experience this line for myself, especially iconic island- to experience it would be SO incredible! it sounds amazing!

  • Bainbridge Island does sound like a beautiful escapade. Most island/tropical scents tend to either go the breezy/fruity way and I’m glad this one goes the unexplored area, the forest. It’s full on a green fragrance to showcase the greenery and beauty of the island. This is definitely a house to keep my eyes on for future releases. I’m located in the USA.

  • A very compelling review. It convinced me to buy Monsoon Madness and the Discovery Set direct from Anjali! Under The Mango Tree, Tiger Bright, and Iconic Island sound like they could become favourites. I live in the US.

  • What a wonderful review! I happen to love a conifer or really any woodsy fragrance as long as it’s not a synthetic wood. I really appreciate Mysore Sandalwood and Jasmine Sambac. But definitely also love cedar, lavender and fir! I have been to Bainbridge many times. I had a friend who lived there but even when I wasn’t visiting I’d sometimes ride the ferry out at sunset and time the return to be a full moon over looking the Seattle skyline. For a couple bucks you had glorious views and a peaceful escape.
I’d love to try this fragrance and this house. I am located in California, missing the PNW.

  • Oh yay! Another local perfumer to the PNW! Now I get the fun of hunting down where to find and smell her scents ❤️

  • Mimian’s review of Anjali Perfumes Iconic Island was pure magic! As a niche fragrance enthusiast, I’m always chasing scents that tell a story—and wow, she brought this one to life. Her description was so vivid, I could almost feel the island breeze and smell the creamy florals dancing in the air. It’s rare to find a reviewer who captures the emotional essence of a perfume so beautifully. Mimian reminded me why I fell in love with indie perfumery in the first place: it’s about artistry, memory, and soul. Iconic Island is officially on my wishlist—and I’d be over the moon to win it!

  • Thanks for the lovely review! Iconic Island sounds like a fresh green walk under cool tree shade—the sparkle of lavender, grass, and grapefruit meeting fir and juniper, then softening into violet and rose before a cedar-moss musk hush. I really like that it stays airy and forest-clean rather than “holiday pine.” I’d love to try Iconic Island!
    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Anjali perfumes are so beautiful, and to be enrobed in one is a pleasure. She truly knows how to make one feel, by their senses, that they have been transported to a destination in nature. I would absolutely love to wear what her concept of Bainbridge Island is through Iconic Island. I’ve never been to Washington, but it’s been pretty high on my bucket list for a while.

Thank you to Mimiam for sharing your experience with and excitement of Anjali’s latest release.

Thank you for this generous draw! I live in Texas, USA.

  • The notes in Anjali Iconic Island sounds like a walk through the Pacific NW. The cedar and balsam in particular remind me of Puget Sound. The lavender and grass notes provide a lightness and freshness to the composition. Simple, yet elegant and very evocative of the region. MD, USA

  • “It’s a perfume that can make me feel ten degrees cooler just by wearing it.” I’ve been searching for this kind of fragrancee to beat this summer’s heat and humidity, plus I love Under the Mango Tree, so I’m adding Iconic Island to my to-try list. I enjoyed the pairing of grapefruit and cut grass accord in another fragrance, but this combination with fir and florals takes it in a very different direction. I’m really intrigued by this snapshot of Bainbridge Island.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I’m all in on anything forest. I live in the Pacific Northwest and I need a reminder of it when I leave (soon as I retire). Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Your descriptive narration actually took me to another place. Not quite the PNW but the imagery of a majestic conifer forest. Most commercial fragrances rely on the cedar and sandalwood combinations that are staples but also “usual suspects”. This brings in the layers from the ground up being that you use flowers, green elements, and mix it up with a few touches falling back upon a sturdy base of the atlas cedar. Niche perfumery is something I’m starting to enjoy personally and I would like to add this to my collection. From North Carolina, USA

  • Evocative review for what sounds like a beautiful fragrance. I visited the Pacific Northwest once and I remember the deeply refreshing air and the dry coolness of the forests. I imagine this is what this perfume smells like. I would love to try it!

  • foreverscents says:

I am a big fan of fragrances that evoke forests, especially with fir and cedar wood. I am intrigued by the lavender note in Iconic Island. I used to live in Seattle and I miss the fresh green smell in the air. I am touched that Anjali has created a fragrance that pays tribute to her adopted home. I live in the USA.

  • Kensolfactoryodyssey says:

What I loved most about Mimian’s review is how Iconic Island turns notes I usually avoid—fir, pine, lavender—into something cooling, refreshing, and irresistible. It really sounds like a walk through a living forest. I live in the USA.
