Vanilla reimagined as a breeze. Wear it when you want to be felt without being touched.” ~ Linda Pilkington, Creative Director and founder of Ormonde Jayne describing her latest release, Vanilla Mistral

Ormonde Jayne Vanilla Mistral, the latest addition to the house’s Four Corners of the Earth Collection, was released on August 8th at Neiman Marcus. It follows on the heels of two other recent additions to this particular collection:Vetiveria (2025) and Vanille des Afriques Intensivo (2024). From what I’ve gleaned, Vanilla Mistral is quite different from the previous vanilla, which feels like a balsamic, silken veil of scent. Ormonde Jayne’s new take on vanilla characterizes itself as gourmand/spicy, with a scent profile “pure, secretive, reimagined”, as per the brand’s copy.

Mistral means ‘masterly’: it originates from the Languedoc dialect of Occitan (an ancient Romance language also referred to as Provençal). The mistral conjures images of a powerful, cold northwesterly wind which blows from the south of France and affects the weather in North Africa, Sardinia, Malta, Sicily, Corsica, and the Balearic Islands. Those amongst us who have experienced it will never forget its elemental force – a thing of wonder.

Ormonde Jayne Vanille Mistral is a carnal force in its own right. It incorporates many aspects of the Provençal open air marketplace and the souk: fruits, nutmeats (pistachio), warm spices. Where the winds gust, we find figs and pomegranates in profusion, and the scent of cardamom and black pepper tickles our nostrils provocatively. A lone note of violet imparts a powdery, delicate floralcy to the composition. Vanilla is the headline aromatic component: she is surrounded by a supporting cast of woody, ambery, musky, and earthy characters which assume the guise of velvety Cashmeran® in combination with sandalwood and a formidable aromachemical ambergris. This evokes the Mediterranean to me, the wooden hull of seafaring vessels, and a hefty dose of brine. The presence of vetiver complements a smoky facet also found in vanilla: it contributes a touch of mystery, adventure.

It is an extraordinarily intense fragrance, possessed of seemingly endless tenacity: on paper, it lasts for at least 4-5 days – and on skin, greater than 36 hours, even after bathing. There is a decidedly fleshy timbre to it, one which affixes itself to the skin and clings unwaveringly. In this wise, it embodies the dry potency of its namesake as well as its expansive reach. Be apprised that Vanilla Mistral is going to be your fragrant companion for the long haul: when you apply it, it will accompany you with unflagging enthusiasm and grace. Ormonde Jayne Vanilla Mistral possesses an unstoppable momentum; once set in motion it cannot be intercepted.

Notes: pistachio, pomegranate, cardamom, black pepper; Cashmeran®, fig, vanilla, violet; ambergris, sandalwood, vetiver

Ormonde Jayne Vanilla Mistral was kindly offered me for review, many thanks! My nose is my own…
